STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION We celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph today. This feast was instituted a little more than 100 years ago because at that time, just as today, the concept of family was under attack. Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903, felt that in Europe in particular the family was in crisis.  

The Gospels do not tell us much about the Holy Family in the years from Jesus’ birth to the beginning of His public ministry. We are aware that they fled to Egypt, returned to  Nazareth, and today’s  Gospel reading tells us of the twelve‐year‐old Jesus accompanying His parents to Jerusalem. Today we honor that Holy Family, and we understand that they are a model for us as a Christian family. However, there is also an  understanding that we need to be aware that we are part of a bigger family, our faith community as a Church and as a parish.  

Just as a family unit cannot function properly without each member playing a part, that is true of our local parish family as well. Each of us needs to play a role and to contribute as a member of that family. That is what stewardship is all about. We must be stewards for our personal families to function, and we must also be good stewards for our parish family to be effective.

 REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL 

Celebramos la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José en la actualidad.Esta fiesta fue instituida hace poco más de 100 años, porque en ese momento, al igual que hoy en día, el concepto de familia estaba bajo ataque. El Papa León XIII, quien se desempeñó 1878‐1903, consideró que en Europa, en particular, la familia estaba en crisis.  

Los Evangelios no nos dicen mucho acerca de la Sagrada Familia en los años desde el nacimiento de Jesús al comienzo de su ministerio público. Somos conscientes de que huyeron a Egipto, de regresar a Nazaret, y la lectura del Evangelio de hoy nos habla de los doce años de edad, Jesús acompaña a sus padres a Jerusalén. Hoy honramos a que la Sagrada Familia, y entendemos que son un modelo para nosotros como una familia cristiana. Sin embargo, también hay un entendimiento de que tenemos que ser conscientes de que somos parte de una familia más grande, nuestra comunidad de fe como Iglesia y como parroquia.  

Del mismo modo que una unidad familiar no puede funcionar correctamente sin que cada miembro juega un papel, eso es cierto de nuestra familia parroquial local. Cada uno de nosotros tiene que jugar un papel y contribuir como miembro de esa familia. Eso es lo que tiene que ver con la administración. Debemos ser mayordomos de nuestras familias personales a la función, y también debemos ser buenos administradores de nuestra familia parroquial sea eficaz.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El primer domingo después de la Navidad celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Los latinos somos un pueblo muy unido en familia. Para nosotros es más que un pequeño grupo compuesto de padre, madre, hijos e hijas. La familia para nosotros los latinos es un conjunto grande de abuelos, abuelas, tíos, tías, primos, primas, compadres, comadres, suegros, suegras y otros más además del padre, la madre y los hijos. Para los latinos una fiesta que celebra la familia de Jesús es la cosa más natural del mundo.

Pope Francis has called for the Christian Church to be a “field hospital” for those wounded and often neglected by the modern world. In his letter, The Joy of the  Gospel, the pope calls for the Church to be truly open and missionary at every level. What does this mean for the moral teaching of the Church? Is it changing? And how can members of the Church share the love and mercy of Christ as the pope asks even in an atmosphere of deep moral confusion that requires clear talk about hard moral issues? How can we, now, talk in a truly Christian way about all the culture war issues, from abortion and euthanasia to the sexual revolution,  gender issues, and even proposed changes to the very biology that makes us human?

Returning Catholics Begins January 20 We would like to welcome home those who have been away from the Church.  The next 7‐week Returning  Catholics series will begin on Wednesday evening Jan 20, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the church Social Room.  The series  includes a discussion of the 

concerns of those returning and an updating in the  beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. It is very helpful for those returning to have a spiritual companion for the duration of the series.  If you would like to be a companion or are considering returning, contact Carol Becker, cabecker@san.rr.com (858) 354‐7085) or just come to the first meeting.

The seminar "As By a New Pentecost"   

What is this "New Pentecost" thing all about? In the first Pentecost, as promised by Jesus, the Apostles first, and then those who followed them, were filled with the Holy Spirit and received the power,  enthusiasm, and courage that attracted people by the thousands and the church experienced explosive growth. Pope Francis has called for a New Pentecost to reverse the declining participation in the Mass, to  infuse the Mass with Enthusiastic participation and worship, and to launch a New Evangelization that  attracts people by the thousands once again.  

The seminar "As By a Pentecost" explains more clearly and fully what the Catechism teaches about the  Sacrament of Confirmation, and we pray that each  participant would receive the power, enthusiasm, and courage that Christ promised in the coming of the Holy Spirit.  

The Adult Faith Formation Team at St. James is pleased to present the recently released DVD version of the seminar in the Parish Hall on Thursday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, January 14 through February 25. We will be offering the identical series in the Social Room of the Church on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, January 16 through February 27. Register today after Mass.  Register early so we can order materials and have them delivered before the seminar begins. Don't put it off! To request further information, or to register during the week, leave a message at 888‐590‐5095 or email Cory@WWDB.org.

2016 WeALLCount This year in the early morning hours of January 29, 2016, roughly 1,500 volunteers will participate in the 2016 WeALLCount, the annual homeless census of San Diego County. WeALLCount empowers our  community to qualify for millions in funding that is criti‐cal to addressing homeless issues.   

The Regional Task Force on the Homeless is seeking volunteers for the following: Count‐ Volunteers to count unsheltered homeless persons ‐January 29.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
