Copy deadline for May issue is 15th April 2021

Hello everyone. As I write this, it has been nearly a year to the day that lockdown

started but it is so good to see the daffodils and snowdrops blooming, the sun shining (although still a little chilly) and the lambs bouncing around, jumping on their mums and playing.

In April we have a holiday, Easter, which is always the Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the first day of Spring. Therefore, the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April.

Easter, one of the oldest traditions, is the celebration of the last week of Jesus’ life, his death, and his resurrection.

Hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, and one of the largest traditions during Easter is the giving of Easter eggs on Easter Sunday. (I’m sure you have all be sneaking a few of them in your shopping baskets)

In the magazine this month you will see the Council are still having their virtual meetings, covering a variety of things that need to be done in the town from sea wall railings to planting and grass cutting.

Holicity Health on page 14 have sent me an article on Vertigo, the symptoms and how it is resolved, most interesting I thought and if you have a problem with Vertigo go and see Nick and his team, they will be happy to help.

I do hope that we can enjoy Easter a little more this year, but please remember the rules and stay safe.

6 The FocusThe Brigadier’s April Rant

One of my unmarried female cousins sadly passed away last month. She left her affairs a little loose which causes additional stress for her closest relations at a time when grief is raw. She was not old, only 71 but she had not been well for a while. She did not die of any Covid related illness but one wonders if her aneurysm had been checked more frequently, she may still be with us today. I have fond memories of cousin, Rose, always the life and soul of any family gathering and her passing reminded me of my own mortality and cast a shadow over my mood. Daphne, God bless her, reminded me of some of the happy times we had all shared together when we were younger, pulling out old photographs, cards and even letters. It did cheer me up. A day later Daphne dropped a small article on my desk which summarised the past year or a certain version of it. I would like to share a small part of this with the reader and apologise to any who may have seen this already. In the year 2020 we saw, 1. The environmental benefits of lockdown e.g. air quality 2. Woman Lead Better Jacinda Arden in New Zealand and Tsai

Ing-Wen in Taiwan shut down quick and hard. It worked. 3. Working From Home, Works. 4. Black Lives Matter Global Movement. 5. The ozone hole over Antartica closed. (News to me…) 6. Germany is changing 62 military bases into nature reserves. 7. Whales come back to the Atlantic after 100 years. 8. G.B. report smallest number of HIV infections. 9. China committed to zero emissions by 2060. 10. Saudi Arabia and Palestine banned child marriages. 11. Demand for oil decreased. 12. Scotland will provide menstrual aids to all women. 13. Kazachstan committed to abolish the death penalty. 14. Scientists discovered 20 new animal and plant species. 15. The number of victims of terrorism decreased again. Not a bad set of facts and figures to add to the balance sheet of 2020. A final flippant note to end this month’s rant. I spotted in some magazine as I sat in the waiting area of my opticians an advert featuring a well-groomed, fit, confident looking man of about forty with the following caption below, “I am no longer constantly anxious in social situations that I will pass wind and disgrace myself.” There then followed in bold print, “Flatulence Filtering Garments That Erase The Unpleasant Odour.” Well, it is the first I have heard of this type of attire. Strangely though there was no mention of an inbuilt silencer being embedded within the fabric of this poor chap’s trousers to erase the sound of the fart which would, one assumes, be as disgraceful as the unsavoury smell itself… Yours Trying To Be Discreet Even Without F F Garments

Before and After

If you’re tired of paying out good money for the exterior of your house to be repainted every few years, then please read this.

We specialise in silicone and acrylic colour-tinted thin coat render. We have hundreds of colours to choose from plus we can matchany RAL number provided.

If your rendering is sound, we can wrap your whole house in a reinforced glass fibre mesh, this is imbedded in between two coats ofspecialist adhesive polymer render at approximately 5mm thick, this is the only render that binds to paint. Once this is troweledsmooth and dry a primer is applied in the same colour as your finished render. Then the silicone/acrylic thin coat render is applied toa thickness of your choice, from very smooth 1mm, to medium 1.5mm, to heavy 3mm, using our specialist spray render machine.

The silicone qualities in the material doesn’t allow dirt to stick to the walls, the acrylic makes the render extremely tough and flexible. The render is 100% U.V. resistant so won’t fade and is also algae resistant meaning your house will remain looking as new for years,15 according to manufacturers warranty.

We also offer a complete house render deep clean, a strong antifungicidal wash is applied to the house and then jet washed clean.Once dry, the house is sprayed with a clear liquid 100% silicone solution to protect your paint from dirt and algae and remain lookingclean for years. This works especially well on scratched renders like Monocouche that haven’t been sealed but also works on paintthat just needs a freshen up.

March 2nd, 2021 BTC Virtual Planning Committee

(BTC makes appropriate recommendations to decision makers MDC, the Local Planning Authority): 6/7 Town Councillors present (Neil Pudney, absent plus 3 unfilled vacancies): Chaired by Town Mayor Ron Pratt. Planning Clerk Kevin (with Low Band width) was a ghost of his normal self, both visually and audibly KEY BURNHAM APPLICATIONS: • The Orchard, York Road - single storey rear extension - -

SUPPORTED. • Bella's Italian Bistro 80 High Street – ‘’House of Multiple

Occupancy (HMO) on the first and second floors’’- SUPPORTED subject to clarification on foul drain route and fire escape arrangements

March 2nd, 2021 BTC Extraordinary Town Council

Meeting

Jo Jeffery Acting Town Clerk Pointedly, a somewhat spectral resident Nick Gilmour displayed a pic of the ugly new EA Quay railings as his virtual background as he watched proceedings on Zoom CO-OPTION: Review of presentations from applicants for the longstanding Town Councillor vacancy in the South Ward. NB: There are still two other remaining vacancies.

Candidate - Robert Overall - Ex Rugby, Sailing, Round Table ex Parish Councillor. Experienced in Local Government. Chief Officer of Front line local and regional services. A strong but sadly unsuccessful candidate. Candidate - Kelvin Coles – (Cabin Dairy and Carnival Committee) – Keen on supporting businesses and Tourism, retaining as much town character as possible. The Town Council ultimately voted to Co-opt Kelvin Coles by 4 votes to 2. Congratulations to Town Councillor Kelvin Coles and his excited dog. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY (EA) INSTALLATION OF RAILINGS ON THE SEA WALL. Long and anguished discussion of the installation of railings on the sea wall. The EA claim that BTC’s formal acknowledgement receipt of the proposals constituted agreement. Wendy Stamp confirmed that the MDC Conservation Officer & BTC had understood that a ‘small’ barrier would be placed on top of the wall. Nobody from BTC had agreed. Ron Pratt asked that all documents should be made public. ‘The EA jumped straight from informing BTC of a risk to installing the railings under Permitted Development Rights. It was claimed that nobody knows who owns the seawall. Wendy Stamp relayed a suggestion from a member of the public to install any fence the water side of the wall. Wendy also suggested writing to the EA asking for a dialogue on an alternative proposal developed in line with the Conservation Officers. Ron Pratt suggested a petition from residents to the EA. Several members felt the present solution increases the Health and Safety risks. In the end the council also agreed to reach out to residents with Engineering and Architectural experience to help identify alternatives.

NB: There is plenty of research on the subject on most local group FaceBook pages, but to make the most impact, please try to resist the temptation to cut and paste as much as possible from other’s objections.

Full Town Council Meeting Town Mayor’s Announcements – Had hoped on March 19th to hold a virtual Town Reception – Unfortunately, given Covid admin complications this has had to be postponed. Town Clerks Report – Polling Station for May Election, Carnival Hall will be used for that purpose in Burnham South - even though the Hall is technically in the North Ward!). No clarity yet on the North Ward’s own station Bob Calver Highways Report – Normal excellent summary, although he had to patiently ask for clarification of the council’s formal position on a couple of issues as views appeared to blow in the breeze. • Should regular CPO ‘tru-cams’ be used to detect speeding cars

and bikes? – Should BTC buy its own speed camera? – A discursive debate – Agreed that ‘CPOs’ to talk with police.

• Speeding on Green Lane – Wendy asks that this issue go to

Highways Panel. But unfortunately, it is officially National Speed Limit.

• Bob to follow up with SWF pressure groups re Essex Highways/Chelmsford City Council, B1012 Burnham Road road/multiple roundabout proposals that will adversely impact through traffic from the Dengie.

Allotments - Wendy Stamp led a discussion regarding a BTC formal application for £8K Money Section 106 held by MDC and discussion as to which priorities it might be spent on. New Town Sign proposal - “Careful and Considerate bikers/drivers welcome” to be included in New Town Sign – Wendy Stamp proposed – Cue for Whimsical jests as to whether Horses should also be included. Ormiston Rivers Academy - Proposed increase in facilities/"Published Admissions Number". BTC fully supports. 30 extra places already approved. Issues complicated because The Plume no longer in the group. Community ‘Engagement Team (ex ‘CPOs’ amongst other titles) - To discuss and agree Service Level request for April 2021 - March 2022 scope of work. Ron proposed that the team be challenged to detail actual core capabilities, costs, and measurable deliverables in view of their ever-changing organisation. BTC forming a steering group. Public Forum- Qs for Town Mayor Ron Pratt • Great to see the arrival of Kelvin as a new Town Councillor – Please could you share what the plan is for the remaining 2 councillor vacancies to be elected/co-opted? – It’s been almost 8 months RESPONSE: Because of objections from a resident, by-elections for the North Ward will now be held with the ECC May 6th elections to fill the remain vacancies • Following the March 2nd BTC meeting regarding the ugly Environmental Agency sea wall fence: Please can you share an update - I think it was agreed that all the historic EA correspondence would be posted on the website, and a call out for volunteer architects/engineers to design a more palatable Plan B alternative RESPONSE: I will ask for all the correspondence including a communication we received yesterday to be posted on the Council Website ASAP • Please can the new slimmed down website also be kept up to date - I currently can’t track the recordings of the March 2nd meetings online, nor indeed Kelvin’s detail in the list of councillors, still no calendar despite meetings being resumed? RESPONSE: I appreciate that this isn’t the first time you’ve asked this, and we will update this information as a priority

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity receive over £2,000 donation from pupils at St Cedd's School in Chelmsford! Pupils from St Cedd’s School in Chelmsford recently took part in the School’s Creative Century Challenge to raise money for the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity in memory of a much-loved former teacher, Mrs Vanessa Ho You.

Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s efforts to walk 100 laps of his garden, children were challenged to do 100 things, or spend 100 minutes on an activity, to celebrate Mrs Ho You’s life and contribution to the School in a creative way. The staff were blown away by the children’s brilliant efforts and the money raised by the School community. The children of Critical Workers in School and the pupils who are remote learning, ranging from age 3 to 11, all took part, coming up with some excellent ways to fundraise whilst also wanting to make a positive difference at such a difficult time, showing an outward-looking consciousness of others. One pupil gave 100 hugs to family members; one shared 100 stories and poems with loved ones in person and via video call; and three siblings collected over 100 pieces of litter from the banks of the River Chelmer. Whilst some opted to get active by doing 100 press-ups or 100 ballet jumps, others chose mindful activities such as completing a 100-piece puzzle, making Lego masterpieces using 100 bricks or colouring for 100 minutes. Some children became artists for the afternoon creating pictures from 100 pieces of material, making 100

clay models or completing 100 knitting stitches; and others challenged themselves in the kitchen by baking 100 biscuits or cakes, which they kindly delivered to their neighbours. Mr Matthew Clarke, Head of St Cedd’s School on New London Road in Chelmsford, said: “What a fabulous way to remember Mrs Ho You who was, herself, such a wonderfully creative person. The children of St Cedd’s School have risen to the challenges laid before them and put their excellent levels of creativity to good use to raise money in memory of Mrs Ho You.” Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Community Fundraiser, Karen Mitchell, said; “We are really grateful to St Cedd’s School for their support of Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. Their donation will help us to continue supporting men and women with all types of cancer at all stages – whether newly diagnosed or longer-term, throughout treatment and after treatment is completed. What an imaginative and fun way to raise money in memory of a dearly loved teacher, Mrs Vanessa Ho You. I am sure she would be very proud of what all of the students have achieved.”

Feeling a bit giddy but haven’t had a drink? It could be vertigo, which is a sensation that feels as though you are moving when still, or everything around you is.

Think about when you are sitting on a stationary train at a platform and the train next to you starts to pull away. Initially it may feel as though you are moving even though you are still, a very strange sensation which is sometimes accompanied by nausea and even vomiting.

If it’s the first time you’ve ever experienced vertigo it can be scary! You should definitely contact your GP just to rule out an inner ear infection or anything else. Hopefully, it is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) which is a disorder arising from crystals normally attached to the walls of the inner ear. They sense acceleration and are located right beside the semi-circular ear canal, which do the job of sensing where the body is; standing upright, falling forwards or going to the side. So when the crystals calcify and become dislodged they can fall into the canal causing chaos!

Should this happen, it may feel as though you are falling to the side. The body will then try to correct that and because of this, you start to feel dizzy. Not a nice sensation but it is usually fairly easy to resolve.

There is a diagnostic test which is carried out and will result in a nystagmus (a rapid side to side movement in the eye) if you do have vertigo. If this is the case, then the Epley manoeuvre will be carried out to basically move the dislodged crystals out of the semi-circular canal.

VERTIGO?

LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPY? OR INTERESTED IN A PHYSIOTHERAPY CAREER?

Although vertigo is more common as you get older, it is not actually anything to do with wear and tear but more to do with the fact that you’ve had more opportunity to dislodge the crystals. So don’t feel you’re over the hill if you get vertigo and don’t get yourself in a spin! If a visit to the GP didn’t solve the problem then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Despite the pandemic we managed to give a third-year physio student a hundred-hour clinical placement to complete their degree in this academic year. We were rewarded by a lovely graduation photograph, complete with beaming smile.

William de Ferrers School hold an excellent careers convention each year which we are happy to support, by sending a team to talk to prospective physio students. In this pandemic year the convention has been virtual and we had lots of fun producing a careers information video. We based the video around a conversation with one of our work experience pupils from ten years ago, who attended W de F, but who decided on a different first degree. He has since decided to train for physiotherapy as a mature student and is due to begin his course in September. His information was fully up to date and he gave us some great insights into his experiences of applying just this year.

It occurred to us that pupils from other local schools may find the video useful and so have made it available on our website www.essexphysio.co.uk and on our YouTube channel, Essex Physiotherapy Clinic.

Alongside this video are numerous self-help topics created by our team of specialist physiotherapists on topics ranging from low back and neck pain, setting up a computer station at home, exercises for mobility and relaxation/stress management courses.

AIR CONDITIONING - BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER

The warm summer of 2020 saw most people spending significantly more time at home. In some cases, people were working from home for the first time and in others, people were simply following Government advice and not venturing out without good reason. In 2020, Greenworks Controlled Environments responded to increased demand for residential air conditioning systems to provide cooling to bedrooms, living spaces and home offices. Now is the time to consider an energy efficient heat pump air conditioning system installation so that homeowners can deliver a constant, cooler temperature to their homes. Homeowners that had air conditioning installed last summer will have also benefitted from energy efficient heating from their heat pump system over the winter. An air source heat pump transfers thermal energy (heat) from one mass of air to another. In cooling mode, heat energy is absorbed into the system’s refrigerant circuit via the indoor unit and rejected at the system outdoor unit into the mass of outside air. The cycle reverses in heating mode such that thermal energy is absorbed from the mass of outside air, even when that air temperature is low, and heat energy is transferred to the room via the indoor unit. Daikin UK have heat pump solutions with some of the highest energy efficiency labels on the market. With an emphasis on renewable energy and savings due to inverter technology you will benefit from a total solution that provides outstanding comfort without jeopardising your energy bill.

Many Daikin systems operate with A+++ energy labels qualifying for just 5% VAT on residential installations and guaranteeing you some of the best energy performances around. Some models automatically sense when the air-conditioned space is unoccupied and reduce their performance until they sense people have returned. Wi-Fi enabled products allow users to monitor energy use and adjust control settings even when they are out. This can be useful when switching on cooling in advance of your arrival home. A wide range of indoor units and design options allows for an installation that compliments your interior. Outdoor units include technology that allows for quiet operation.

Improving indoor air quality is recommended more than ever, and Daikin air conditioners contribute towards this. All the units in Daikin’s FTXM range are fitted with a Titanium apatite deodorising filter that helps eliminate odours. The Flash Streamer breaks down allergens such as pollen and fungal spores providing better and cleaner air. Arrange for a free survey, proposal, and quotation to consider an installation before summer.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR DOG’S GASTROINTESTINAL AND IMMUNE SYSTEM

• The dog gastrointestinal tract is colonised by a complex number of microorganisms that help to modulate health and disease.

• They produce various nutrients for their host, prevent infections caused by disease-producing intestinal bacteria, modulating the normal immune response and protecting against disease.

• Modification of the intestinal microorganisms is essential in maintaining our dogs’ health. The introduction of probiotics and prebiotics, or synbiotics, into the dogs’ diet is favourable for the intestinal microbiota.

What are Probiotics? • are live microbial microorganisms intended to provide health

benefits by improving or restoring the intestinal microbiota by increasing the ratio of normal, “healthy” intestinal microorganisms relative to the pathogenic (disease-forming) species.

• have the potential to stimulate innate immunity against microorganisms and dietary allergens.

• production of antibacterial substances and exert inhibitory actions on disease-forming organisms

• reduce toxin attachment to the intestinal cells • increase competition against disease-forming species of bacteria • reduce bacteria from getting into the blood system, thereby

reducing general inflammation within the body.

• they stimulate the cells lining the intestinal tract, including the repair and production of cell-protective proteins

What are Prebiotics? • They are non-digestible foodstuffs, which are fermented by the

large intestinal bacteria and therefore encourage the growth and stabilisation of a favourable commensal bacterial population and the production of volatile fatty acids. Volatile fatty acids provide nutrition and have a protective function of the intestinal cells.

How to help your dog’s intestinal health and general immunity • Use a combination of probiotics and prebiotics in a single

synbiotic product ensures a superior effect, compared to the activity of the probiotic or prebiotic alone.

• The use of a synbiotic formulation that contains two different probiotic strains, thereby maximising the beneficial effect of both bacteria.

• The use of a symbiotic formulation that contains beta-glucans and inulin prebiotics, shown in studies to reduce cholesterol levels, show a protective effect against colorectal cancers, improved liver health, boost immune cell counts and antibody production and the reduction of the severity of signs of inflammatory bowel disease. There are so many more beneficial effects that, for sake of brevity, I have not mentioned.

Conclusion In dogs, synbiotics may be utilised to improve and/or restore the microbiome composition with subsequent benefits on inflammatory and immune functions include inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, antibiotic-responsive diarrhoea, acute diarrhoea during and following antibiotic use and during times of stress and convalescence. A healthy host-microorganism balance must be maintained in order to optimally perform metabolic and immune functions and prevent disease development.
