    What is distanced learning??

Occurs when there is a separation between the

instructor and the student, usually due to geographical

or time concerns that prevent the student from

attending an on-campus course. Students work on their own at home or anywhere and

communicate with other students via e-mail, electronic

forum, video conferring, instant messaging and other

    forms of computer-based communication.

    Audio Based Courses

Audio based distance learning courses utilize one-way or two-

way communication. This includes everything from radio

broadcasting and phone conferences to prerecorded audio CDs.

Video Based CoursesPrerecorded Video videotaped courses are sent to students

who can view them at an off-site location.

Two-Way Interactive Video Satellites, cameras, and television

of computer monitors allow professors and/or students on onesite to interact with professors and/or students at another site.

    ADVANTAGES

LOTS OF FLEXIBILITY. Students can complete their course work anywhere.

This allows students to work when and where it is more convenient for them.

NO COMMUTING.Taking a course online can be one way to cut down on costly

    gas or public transportation.

NUMEROUS CHOICES FOR SCHOOLS.Even if you live in a community with

few or no colleges distance learning allows you to choose from a wide variety of

    schools to complete your education.

LOWERED COSTS.Prices for online courses are generally cheaper than their on-

    campus counterparts.

LEARN WHILE WORKING. As distance learning can usually be completed on

your own schedule, it is much easier to complete distance learning courses while

    working.

DISADVANTAGES Lack of social interaction. If the classroom environment is

what you love most about learning you may want to take a

step back and reconsider distance learning. Youll likely get

some interaction on chat rooms, discussion boards and through

email, but the experience will be quite different than

    traditional courses.

Requires adaptability to new technologies. If youvenever

been one to love working with technology you will probably

get a lot less out of an online course than your more tech-

savvy counterparts. Make sure you feel comfortable workingwith computers and with online programs before you sign up

    for a class.

Forgetting the Basic Way of Studying Student would no longerrely on the books that are lent by their teachers for them tostudy since they are already interested to study using thecomputer. Even simple problems and homework that they need

to answer, they are more of seeking the assistance of computersalready.

    - When technology is introduced into aclassroom, things change. Instruction throughcomputers give students more control over theirlearning environments and access to a widerrange of materials to use in the learning process.

For example, students are too confused orembarrassed to ask questions because they dontwant to show their ignorance but withindividualized computer instruction, students can

always immediately request help if something isunclear

Computers in classroom help to make itmore interactive. They are extremely

effective with the struggling learnersbecause they have unlimited patience.

The computer can also be used to educate

the smarter students who easily get bored ina traditional classroom since they reachtheir goal faster.

    Technology has a negative effect

on Student because it is adistraction to them

-Using technology in the classroom has been a issue that

teachers have to deal with. Student use technology to avoidboredom from what is being done in class. They use their cellphone to text one another, surf the internet, check theirFacebook or Myspace, etc..

-In a NEA online article a fourth grade teacher in Arizonaexpressed this, Believes cell phones should be absolutelybanned from school. She also said, Cell phones are nothingbut a disruption to class instruction.

Counterargument:Student should be able to use the computer because it has a

positive effect on their writing skills. Word processors are a great tool fortheir writing skills because the word processor fixes their errors so theycan receive a better grade. Also, they learn how to type and their work ismuch professional like when it is typed.

Refutation:Technology that fixes errors for them is not helpful because they

cant learn from their mistakes. Dr. Elisa Medhus, author of Raising

Children Who Think for Themselves, says, Failure is integral to success.Without error, most of modern society and almost all contemporaryknowledge would not exist. People learn from their mistakes and if achild spells a word wrong then he or she can learn from the mistake andlearn the correct spelling of the word.

The effects of technologicaldevelopment on teachers

The teacher's role changes as well.

The teacher is no longer the center of attention

as the dispenser of information, but rather plays the role of facilitator.
