Area 1 Sheryl Flanagin, Director Wow! What a great District 10
Conference we had! I know
that those of you who were un-
able to attend have heard all
about it from your club mem-
bers who were present. I was
proud and amazed when I real-
ized just how much the clubs
and members of Area 1 contrib-
uted to the success of this con-
ference. A big cheer to all of you!
Now, it is time to look forward to our Area Meetings.
Please, mark your calendars for April 16. Zonta Club
of Central Oklahoma will be hosting our Area 1 Meet-
ing at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Airport in Oklahoma
City. The hotel is new, bright, cheerful, clean, and
economical! Our Central Oklahoma Zontians are
busy making plans to ensure that you all have a great
time in OKC. See you then!
Central Oklahoma
Central Oklahoma Hosts Most Successful Fund-
raiser Ever–The Zonta Club of Central Oklahoma
once again put on a fabulous golf tournament, meet-
ing fundraising goals and producing happy golfers!
The 3rd Annual Zonta Fall Classic Golf Tournament,
held on Oct 8, 2010 at the Lincoln East Golf Course,
enjoyed great weather and a full complement of
teams. Each golfer received a great door prize, a
tasty lunch, and lots of smiles from COK club mem-
bers. With 68 hole sponsors, 36 teams and impres-
sive donations for tournament, hole and door prizes
from 72 sponsors, this fundraiser was a definite suc-
cess, reaching a goal of raising at least $10,000!
These funds will be translated into much-needed help
for projects and programs that advance the status of
women both locally and internationally.

Central Oklahoma Focuses on Local Service –
Central Oklahoma Zontians aimed this year to do
more hands-on service, and they began their efforts
with a series of activities for the young mothers of the
Holy Family Home, a local shelter for unwed moth-
ers. Club members are excited about the life-skills
program developed by long-time Zontian and Chair of
the project, LouAnna Munkres, who states, ―Our
members have been enthusiastically giving their time
and skills to improve the lives of the residents of the
home.‖ On Sep 16 Vice Pres Sharon Hebert, Judy
Kautz, Debbie Miller and Sec Diana Powell pro-
vided a colorful evening of scrapbooking. The young
ladies were helped with the materials brought by the
members, and all enjoyed refreshments after gluing
their photos in the scrapbooks. Tiffany Smith and
Debbie Chamberlain, on Sep 30, shared their pro-
fessional skills with the residents of the Home by pro-

viding them information on domestic violence and
dating violence. The residents were very receptive of
the information provided by our members. This pro-
gram could possibly save a life in the future. Past
Gov Judy Strothmann and LouAnna Munkres pre-
sented information on how to maintain a checking
account – opening an account, writing checks, mak-
ing deposits, adding/subtracting in a check register,
using a debit card, all the information to keep yourself
in the ―black.‖ The ladies enjoyed the nuts and gold/
chocolate ―Fish‖ treats while learning something that
they hadn’t been exposed to in the past. Finally,
Donna Hames volunteered to organize and inventory
the ―Baby-Bucks‖ closet, a learning and behavior in-
centive program. Clearly, COK is giving back to the
community and improving the lives of young women.

Central Oklahoma Wins Attendance Trophy at
District 10 Conference – The Zonta Club of Central
Oklahoma attended the District 10 Conference in San
Marcos at 18 strong, and once again garnered the
coveted Attendance Trophy and Traveling Hat. Total
miles traveled to the conference by members totaled
over 7200 miles. President Theresa Farris com-
mented, ―Our club travels in packs. We always en-
sure all members are informed about upcoming ac-
tivities, have someone to travel with and room ar-
rangements. Because of this, the Central Oklahoma
club always attends District 10 Conferences and
Area 1 meetings in full force. It gives our members
the best opportunities to stay informed about Zonta
and what we are doing in the district and internation-
ally to advance the status of women.‖

year and will see you all there!!
Members Lynn Sudbury, Renee Moody and Con-nie Stierstorfer represented our club this year at the
district 10 Conference in San Marcos TX. There was great fellowship and great shopping at the Outlet Malls. It was announced that District 10's Jane M. Klausman scholorship was one the the 12 chosen to win the $5000 scholorships given by Zonta Inter-
national. Congratulations to District 10!!

We are thankful for many things in our club! Our list for thanks
follows...
A great first time Art Bra Event and a 110% chairperson—Sharron
Miles—to benefit Careity Foundation which serves women in care for breast cancer. 19 of 20
of our members participated in this project.
An opportunity to attend great workshops at the San Marcos Conference—we are revived and
motivated to own our ZI projects!
Our first-timer and delegate Jamie Dugger dis-
covering the strong women in District 10.
Our own and past governor, Dr. Sharron Miles delivering a wonderful memorial program in San
Marcos.
Our local women’s shelter: Johnson County Family Crisis Center and its contributions to our community. Also we are thankful to be a part of
their like-minded team and giving to its wish list.
A fast and fun committee project selling pecans to build our leadership fund and our pecan queen
Angela Allen.
A great discussion about CEDAW and the UN arms that help raise the status of women. A fine UN club program given by Kim Sikes in our No-
vember club meeting.
Anticipation for a great 2011, learning more about our strengths in our club, growing, and pursuing
excellence!
Parker County
In honor of Women’s Equality Day and the 90th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote, the Zonta Club of Parker County hosted an intimate screening of the Emmy-nominated film ―Iron Jawed Angels‖ on August 26th. Thanks to member Cindy McDaniel at Fairfield Inn & Suites for providing the space
and refreshments.
JoAnn Parker waves at the camera at the showing of Iron Jawed Angels—we had a great crowd, great food and great fellowship plus we learned why we recog-
nize “Women’s Equality Day”
On Oct. 28 the Ladies of the Zonta Club of Parker County ―hit the Streets‖ for UNICEF. With little yellow boxes in hand they stopped at businesses and res-taurants in town looking for donations in Celebration of UNICEF’s 60th Birthday and with a goal of raising enough money to purchase a pump for a village. Later in the day they were Celebrity Bartenders and Waiters at The Wild Mushroom for all tips and 20% of the profits of the bar. After everything was said and done, their goal of $500 was met. The ladies had loads of fun dressing up, business and restaurant owners and customers alike were more aware of Zonta and what we do. It was a great day of aware-ness, fun and raising money for a very good cause!! This was one of our most enjoyable United Nations
Projects.

During this time of the year one is drawn to re-flecting back on the events of the months gone by. When thinking of those events, it is the members of the Area 2 Zonta clubs that makes each meeting special. The enthusiasm, dedica-tion, and willingness to make each of your clubs successful does not go un-noticed. I am truly amazed at how creative
your clubs are in everything from fundraisers, to member recruitment, to service projects. This was so evident in the number of awards that were received by the clubs in Area 2 at the District 10 Conference in
San Marcos. Congratulations to All!!
Your District 10 Board will be meeting early in 2011 to plan the upcoming year. Area meeting dates have been set and workshop topics are on the agenda. Please make every effort to attend your Area 2 meet-ing, as this is where you will have an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with the other clubs in
Area 2.
Mark your calendars now for the Area 2 meeting:
April 29th – 30th, Indigo Hotel, Houston, TX
More information will be sent by early March.

We were thrilled that Terry McGilton was able to at-
tend and represent our club at the District 10 Confer-ence in San Marcos....she brought back great ideas for membership development. She also had a great time networking with all the awesome Zontians she
came to know.
Our annual Christmas Party will be held on Decem-ber 14th at a "party barn" of one of our new mem-bers, Suzanne Wood. During the celebration we
bring a special ornament for exchange, great food and fellowship is exchanged as well. We also bring gift cards for the charity of our choice. So much has
transpired during this year and we take time to bond
as friends and Zontians once again.
May peace and love be the hallmark of all our lives
this Zontian year.
Houston
In September the Houston Club awarded Patra Brannon their Jane M. Klausman Scholarship. Patra was selected as the 2010 District 10 recipient as well. Donna Dodgen (D10 Lt. Gov.) and Debra Silver-thorne (Area 2 Director) were on hand in Houston to present the District check to Patra. Also, we all want to congratulate Patra on being awarded one of the International Jane M. Klausman scholarships. We are
all extremely proud of Patra!

At our November 17 meeting we welcomed represen-tatives from The Community Cloth. The Community Cloth is a microenterprise initiative empowering refu-gee women in Houston. As a collaborative of several refugee-led and refugee serving organizations and their supporters, The Community Cloth supports women who want to create and sell handmade, in-digenous arts and crafts such as woven bags, knitted scarves, embroidered linens, rugs and more. Through producing and selling their wares, the women have an opportunity to express their culture and heritage, learn new skills that will assist them in transitioning to life in the US. All profits from the sales

go directly to the artisans. Purchases of products help refugee women provide for the basic needs of their families as they work to establish new lives in Houston. The Houston Club is considering the Com-munity Cloth as one of their local service projects. To show their support for the organization" members bought many of their beautiful wares that were on
display as well as making monetary donations.

Additionally, the Houston Club has been supporting The Women’s Home for a number of years by provid-ing vocational classes to women who are residents there. The fall 2010 program began on September 21 with fourteen motivated women participating in the classes. The classes run until January ll, 20l1 and cover everything from managing personal change and team building to a new class, career exploration. The women greatly benefit when hearing from differ-ent professionals about their experiences. This is a great opportunity to further Zonta's mission, helping and influencing the women at the Home in their fu-ture career decisions. Members Kayleen Kill and Linda Licarione are co-coordinators for classes at
The Women's Home.
The club also is continuing our longtime service pro-jects at the Bay Area Turning Point and the Houston Rescue and Restore Coalition. We recently became
a coalition member of HRRC.
On November 4, we hosted a Shopping Night at Ten Thousand Villages which is one of our service pro-jects. Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit fair trade organization which benefits artisans in low income countries by providing hand made products to con-sumers. The event was geared to new member re-cruitment with 15% of the sales made that evening benefitting the club. The event was organized by
Membership Chairman, Suzanne Russell.
In keeping with our long tradition of doing service, November was indeed a month full of service pro-jects. We were pleased and humbled to again accept the first place certificate for the District 10 Status of Women Service Award, Division I at District Confer-
ence in San Marcos.
One exciting thing the Houston Club did for the first time was to participate as an exhibitor at the Texas Conference for Women held in Houston on Novem-ber 10. Over 6,000 women attend the conference. The club's Communications/PR Committee, co-chaired by Carole Moffitt and Shawna Reiner, worked on designing their booth, recruiting volun-teers, and soliciting items for door prizes. This was an excellent way for us to promote our club and scholarships, identify potential members (attendees provided their business cards for the door prize draw-ings) showcase Zonta International and the 2010-12 Service Projects. The day was a huge success and
we considered our time well spent.

And last but certainly not least, 10 members attended District Conference in San Marcos. We learned, we laughed and enjoyed the conference and camarade-rie. Thanks to Kathy Stockton, our ―Box Family‖
costumes won first place in the Zonta Feud costume
contest. A good time was had by all!

New Orleans
New Orleans club is having their annual poinsettia
sale to fund the scholarship for a non-traditional fe-
male student at University of New Orleans.
Our holiday party this month will be at the home of
Mary-Frances Gardner, MD. Instead of giving gifts to
one another, we usually give to a cause that will ad-
vance welfare of women. This year our money will
go to buy ―water-kits‖ for Haitians. $10 will give a
Haitian family pure water for a full year!
The newly revised District 10 website is up and run-ning, and we are gradually making progress in in-creasing those pages which are available for your use. You will see that Club information is now up-dated and archived newsletter back issues are also available as well. In the next few weeks, we will add a Committee Chairs contact page and also a very important Member Tools page. The Tools page will include easy access to District 10 forms like scholar-ships and dues, as well as quick links to all the re-
sources you may need on the ZI website.
We will also soon add a District 10 Marketplace, where clubs can submit photos and descriptions of sale items of interest they wish to advertise to Zon-tians. District 10 merchandise will also be available, like remaining pins, fobs, etc. that you may need. If you wish to submit items, please click on the Web-
master link on the website.
If you have suggestions for material you would like to see added to the District 10 website, please let me know, again by clicking on the Webmaster link on the website. Our goal is to create a site that is user-
friendly and useful to you!

It was wonderful to see all the Area 3 Zontians at the District 10 Conference in San Mar-cos. I enjoyed the opportunity to visit with you and look for-ward to seeing you again at
upcoming events in 2011.
The 2010 Zonta District 10 Conference was a collabora-tion of the efforts of many members. I appreciate the as-sistance provided me by the
members of the Zonta Club of Seguin to coordinate conference Registration, Mary Frances Gardner for keeping her eye on the Lost and Found box, Pris Truesdell for providing the message Board, and members of the Zonta Club of San Antonio for being
our conference Greeters on Thursday afternoon.
All the Zontians with a hand in organizing the Confer-ence did a wonderful job. I hope everyone enjoyed the more casual atmosphere this year and the variety of workshops presented. The Silent Auction was very successful. It was great to see the variety of auction items. The District 10 Foundation was
blessed through your generosity.
During the development of my Area report for pres-entation at Conference, I learned how several clubs in our Area have made significant progress with re-cruitment of new members. This is quite an achieve-ment. I encourage all the Area 3 Clubs to bring in one new member per month to provide steady growth, enthusiasm and energy that will make your Club more dynamic and productive. Set a member-ship goal within your Club to establish a clear path for
your success.
Everyone get the word out to all the Zonta members about the Area Meetings being held in April. The program will be the same at each meeting so that you can attend the Area Meeting of your choice and not miss any important information. The Area 1 Meeting is April 16, 2011 in Oklahoma City, Area 2 Meeting will be April 30, 2011 in Houston, and the Area 3 Meeting is scheduled for April 2, 2011 in Cor-pus Christi. I encourage all members interested in serving as officers and directors of clubs to attend an
Area Meeting. It is an excellent opportunity to im-merse yourself in Zonta and gain knowledge and skills you will need to be a leader in your Clubs. Area Meetings have something for every member includ-ing FUN! Join us, mark your calendar now. You
don't want to miss it.

Brownsville
The last three months have been very busy and pro-ductive for the Zonta Club of Brownsville. At the September regular meeting we installed three new members. They are Sabrina Brashear, Maria Deg-witz, and Estela Vasquez. Membership Chairman Bruni Villarreal has been busy working on following
up on potential members and is doing a great job!
At our October meeting, Elvia Garrido and Laura Gilmore presented the program on the United Na-tions and Zonta. At our November 8 regular meet-ing, our program was presented by one of our mem-bers, District Judge Janet Leal. The subject was
on Violence Against Women. Along with Judge Leal was a representative from the battered women’s shelter who provided information on local statistics as
it relates to the shelter.
On November 11, six of our members traveled to San Marcos to attend the District 10 Conference. These included Dollie Lucio, Bruni Villarreal, Kathy Jennings, Terry Chavez, Ana Rodriguez, and Laura Gilmore. The Conference was a lot of fun. Needless to say, we had a very good time. Our
club brought home several awards.
During the November meeting we also distributed tickets for our annual Casas Hermosas Christmas Tour of Homes which is scheduled for Sunday, De-cember 12. Chairman Teresa Del Castillo an-nounced that the homes are ready and added that they are truly beautiful. After the tour of home, we will have our Christmas party at the home of Terry Chavez. Some of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for our Needy Families Christmas project in which we will sponsor three families for Christmas. Our members shop for the families and deliver gifts and groceries for Christmas. We will also be partici-pating in the Make-A-Wish Christmas Project in which terminally ill children make a wish list for
Christmas.
On the third Monday of every month we continue to provide a meal to the homeless at La Posada. Our members and Z Club members prepare and serve
the meal to about 100-125 persons.
Fredericksburg
The Zonta Club of Fredericksburg once again made and sold funnel cakes at the Octoberfest celebration that has occurred the first weekend in October every year for the past 30 years. Local historians confirm that the Zonta funnel cake booth was one of the ven-
dors at the very first Oktoberfest, and they have re-portedly been there every year since. Customers stand in line thirty deep for those funnel cakes. The club now also sells sodas and hundreds of slices of strudel. This year's net proceeds will more than fund
seven $1,000 scholarships for local girls and women.
The mixing, frying, and selling are only part of the hard work involved. Many hours go into the planning and setting up, cleaning up and then taking down the booth. Part of each year's process is an evaluation for how to improve, and things have changed a lot over the years. The club members are definitely com-mitted to this, their biggest annual fund raising effort; and there is a lot of help from family, friends and
members of the Fredericksburg Z Club.
The customer in the picture asked his friend to take his picture with his funnel cake and Zonta member
Barbara MacManus.
Annaliesa O’Quinn, Z Club sponsor, reported that
the shopping trip for our needy families was a great success! Four girls were able to come, Jovonna, Jennifer, Shyla, and Jazzy. They shopped for both the two families sponsored by our club and the one family sponsored by the Z Club. They spent $414.17 of the $415.00 the Zonta ladies so generously do-nated. The two pictures below show the ladies before the shopping began and relaxing after the madness was over.

San Antonio
The Zonta Club of San Antonio met with the girls at Girlsville in October. Members attending were Peg Courtney, Lisa Keckler, Tina Gatewood, and Pris Truesdell. The girls normally cook their own break-fast, so they really enjoyed the breakfast casseroles, fruit and pastries that we provided. After everyone introduced themselves, the girls made Halloween
decorations for their rooms and we all played Bunco.
Candi Ward, Donna Wiley, Marilynn Franke, and Pris Truesdell attended the district conference in San Marcos. Great location and a really enjoyable conference! Our newest member, Amira Barhoumi Meddeb, an Amelia Earhart fellow, attended the
Amelia Earhart luncheon and received her certificate

The fall season serves once again as the club’s larg-est fund-raising season of the year. The Club’s larg-est fund-raising event of the year, the ―Grown-Up Spelling Bee‖ was held in September with their ―Empty Bowl Event‖ held at the community’s Market

The ―Grown Up Spelling Bee‖ had a total of 8 3-adult member teams participating in an actual judged spell-ing bee. In addition, smaller competitions were held such as the club’s ―ABC Sponsors‖ in which commu-nity members purchased and sponsored the 26 let-ters of the alphabet. Members of the audience were also offered an opportunity to participate by purchas-ing the chance to win a spelling bee on paper. The club holds this event in the city’s coliseum and in ad-dition to the participants, they enjoy hosting a large group of community spectators. Funds raised from the spelling bee go into the club’s general budget to
be disbursed as the club elects.
Seguin Zonta sets up a booth at a local Market Days event for their annual fundraiser the Empty Bowl
Event. All funds raised at this fundraiser goes to the
local food pantries.
In October, the club participates in the community Market Days with their Empty Bowl Event. A booth is set up and donated bowls are filled with the club’s special recipe tortilla soup and sold to raise funds for the various local food pantries. A copy of the club’s favorite (tortilla) soup provided by club member, Beu-lah Reiley, is below. It’s great on a cold, winter day
and written for the working woman!

Club Members attended the 17th Annual Candlelight Vigil at Mujeres Unidas in October. This vigil recog-nizes victims of domestic violence in Hidalgo County in the past twelve months. Twelve people died as a result of this violence. District Judge Letty Lopez spoke of the problem in our county. The vigil also celebrates the survivors of violence with music and refreshments. Seven members of our club partici-pated. Amelia Flores, a survivor of extreme domes-tic violence, attended our November meeting and spoke of her research and studies on the subject and of her motivation to bring her message to groups like
