CREW PROFILES – May 2017

CAPTAIN Alexander (Alex) George Alex was born in rural Norfolk, England but grew up in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Alex’s yachting career began at 17 as crew of a 70 ft charter yacht sailing throughout the Caribbean Islands progressing to his Master 3000 license by age 30. He has previously worked on well-known yachts such as M/Y TV (80m), M/Y LADY ANNE PB (70m), M/Y LATITUDE (47m) and M/Y WHEELS (36m). Throughout his career on both charter and private yachts, Alex has travelled extensively throughout the, the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans; Mediterranean, Caribbean, Red and Aegean Seas; and maintains his favorite spot is the island of Malta. He always has a positive can-do demeanor and will ensure your guest will have a very enjoyable and safe charter experience. Outside of boat life, Alex is a qualified pilot, a PADI scuba instructor and is currently completing a comprehensive home renovation project.

1ST OFFICER James Kennedy James is a very passionate Kiwi, who has travelled extensively throughout his yachting career. After university (Accountancy, Finance and Real Estate Valuation) and a commercial background in real estate consultancy in Wellington (in his own words ‘the coolest city in the world’), he skied in France for a few years before joining yachts. A serious waterman, James is a Padi Divemaster, kite surfer, water-skier, wakeboarder, free diver and paddleboarder; and loves to share his knowledge, skill and excitement both on and off the water. He holds his Chief Mate (3000GT) license. In his spare time, James is learning to fly, rides motorbikes, runs trails, is an avid fan of the All Blacks and loves getting home to see friends and family in ‘God’s Country’!!

2ND OFFICER Ferdi Malusay Ferdi is from the Philippines and started his seafaring career on container ships as a deck Cadet. Working aboard yachts since 2002, he has progressed with an excellent attitude and a strong work ethic to his commercial OOW qualification. Ferdi brings a diligent approach to passage planning and guest and crew safety aboard Double Down and delivers a high level of service to her guests. This is Ferdi’s fifth yacht and his career has seen him travel extensively the Med, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; the Caribbean; SE Asia; the Baltic and North Seas and the Amazon. In his spare time, Ferdi loves to spend time with his wife and young family in the Philippines.

BOSUN Marcus Tooke Growing up in a small fishing town in Devon, England Marcus discovered his passion for boats and water sports at an early age. Having completed two years at Falmouth Marine College studying Marine Engineering he ventured to the south of France to commence his yachting career. With nearly five years in the industry he has travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. Marcus favorite destination so far is Thailand, where his highlights included discovering hidden islands and the amazing culture. Marcus is a keen rugby fanatic who will tell anyone listening about his heyday, playing two matches for a UK club side – please, for the sake of the crew, don’t get him started…!!

DECKHAND Yoann Mironenko Yoann is from Santa Monica, California but born in France. He is fluent in French and has been in yachting for just over one year. Yoann served for four years in the U.S.A Navy as a rescue swimmer. He is skilled in all watersport activities and enjoys working in the outdoors.

DECKHAND Christina Dilallo Born and raised in rural western New York, Christina developed a passion for the ocean and the outdoors. After completing her degree in outdoor recreation, she moved to Florida to pursue a career in Yachting. Recently she completed her yacht master qualification and is an expert on meteorology, navigation and safety. Christina is an avid surfer and also enjoys diving, longboarding and hiking. She’s also a keen runner, easily outperforming the rest of the deck crew!

DECKHAND Deon Joubert Deon was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa and loves the outdoors. He is always up for an adventure and loves animals and the conservation of wildlife. Deon lived and studied in New Zealand before joining the yachting industry and the start of his new career in 2012. He enjoys hiking, riding motorcycles, watersports, travelling and snowboarding.

CHIEF ENGINEER Gudni Thor Frimannsson Gudni comes from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow… Never one to shy away from a challenge; and as ‘part time’ member of the Double Down engineering team (Gudni has a rotational position); Gudni is equally at home managing the ‘noisy (but shiny) end’ of a 1940’s steamship in his native Iceland, or the well-appointed engine room onboard MY Double Down. Among his pride and joys he counts guitars, watches and whiskeys but nothing competes with his wife or his young daughter for his affection. Gudni is a devoted and very proud family man with a beautiful two-year-old daughter whom he loves to spoil, much to his fiancée’s disapproval… In his downtime, Gudni spends time with his family and friends at his summer house, enjoys travelling, hunting, cooking and long range shooting.

CHIEF ENGINEER Carl Hoggarth Carl apprenticed in the Royal Navy, serving for 14 years, initially on steam ships. He then trained and qualified as a Chief Petty Officer Artificer, where he progressed to Gas Turbine Frigates, and was deployed three times to the Persian Gulf including operation Desert Storm. Carl came into the yacht industry in 1993 and has worked as Chief Engineer since 1994, travelling to many parts of the world on some of the most widely travelled yachts. He has been involved in new construction, in sea-plane and helicopter operations, ocean research and diving. Carl is a father of two children and lives in the UK.

2ND ENGINEER Joseph Epis Born in the central part of the Philippines, the island called Leyte. Joseph started his seafaring career after graduating college, as an engine cadet on a tanker vessel. He moved to other commercial and container vessels before making the switch to yachting with Double Down. Joseph is an avid basketballer and loves spending time with his family at home.

HEAD CHEF Simon Phillips Nationality: British / South African Simon comes from the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, South Africa. He completed a 4-year professional diploma in cookery and then worked in some high-end establishments, including the Peninsula All Suite Hotel, where the restaurant was awarded "Chaine des Rotisseurs" and voted in the top 10 restaurants in the country. Simon decided to join the yachting world in the mid 1990s and has gone on to work on some of the most prestigious super yachts in the world, including Lionheart (50m), Lady Anne Magee (50m), Illusion (60m), Te Manu (49m), Lady Sheridan (60m) and Nirvana (89.5m). Simon is versatile in a great many types of cuisine and dietary requirements, including macrobiotic, sushi, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. He has

a great work ethic and loves to see the smiles on the faces of happy guests. In his spare time, Simon likes to travel, take part in adventure sports and continue to learn about food!

CHIEF STEWARDESS Cairine Whyte Cairine grew up in a small agricultural area in South Africa, called Louis Trichardt. She attended Stellenbosch University for 3 years majoring in Psychology. After university Cairine began to develop her hospitality training while working at a Guest House. Her skills also had her teaching Geography, History & English to 10th graders in a private school. She has always had a passion for working with children along with travelling and meeting new people from all over the world. She began her yachting career here on M/Y Double down in 2015 and continues to provide amazing service. Cairine enjoys scuba diving, everything about the ocean and wildlife and experiencing new wines from around the world.

3RD STEWARDESS Jade Proetta Jade grew up in south west London and followed her parents’ footsteps when she joined the yachting industry in 2015. Jade enjoys exploring countries and cultures the world over and prides herself on offering excellent service onboard. In her spare time, Jade enjoys photography, textiles and makes many of her own clothes.

Pimara Choksakulpan (Gip) Gip was born in a small town in the south of Thailand and grew up in Bangkok before later moving to Phuket which is where her interest in yachting, and a short time later, her career started. Previously, Gip worked as a flight attendant for Jetstar Airline in Australia. She has always had a strong passion for travelling and for massage so yachting was a great fit. Commencing yachting in 2002, Gip is competent in a variety of massage styles with a particular specialty in Thai massage. In her spare time, she loves water and outdoor activities such as scuba diving, trekking, hiking and is an accomplished photographer.

LAUNDRY STEWARD Joseph Mark Malusay (Mark) Mark is 29 years old and was raised on the beautiful island of Cebu in the Philippines. Mark is a qualified nurse and worked in a hospital in the Philippines before commencing his seafaring career in 2014. Initially working on the cruise ship MS Nautica as a laundry steward he made the transition to yachts, beginning with MY Siran, before we were fortunate enough to have him aboard Double Down. Mark loves exploring new places whenever he gets the chance!
