Churchmenʼs2014
Editor’s NoteIt has been a difficult, short period of timeto get this issue of the Frost Fayre out anda very special “BigThankYou” goes to allthe advertisers who have responded veryquickly enabling it to be successfullycompleted.
As many of you are aware The MagorChurchmen give of their time freely tobring these events (The Frost Fayre, TheMay Fayre and the Fireworks Display) toMagor for the benefit of the localcommunity and to raise money forcharities and those in need.
The ‘man’ hours needed to achieve this isvery significant and relies on a great deal oftime, effort and support from manyindividuals. There is a very serious need formore members (male or female! - youdon’t have to be a church goer). Please, ifyou can, give a little of your time to help!

As I write these words the shops arestarting to stock their shelves with all theirChristmas goods and I’m sure that by thetime you get to read them the shoppingfrenzy of Christmas will be wellunderway!
I’m not that keen on shopping at the bestof times and find shopping for Christmaspresents to be particularly stressful. However like many of you I want to makesure that the gifts I buy for others aresomething they’ll appreciate. There’s acosmetics advert which tells us to buytheir products because "you're worth it".We like to give gifts to the people we lovebecause we love them, because we thinkthat they "are worth it". Often we thinkwe can measure how much we love bythe price of the gift. The more expensivethe gift, the greater our love! And that iswhat the Christmas adverts play on!
Christmas is a celebration of a veryspecial and expensive gift. And it really is agift, freely given for no other reason than
love. We don't have to deserve it, or earnit. It's just that as far as God is concerned,"you're worth it!" This isn’t some generalvague statement. God sees you and me,just as we are, as worth Him comingdown to this little planet, being fully awareof the terrible cost of that decision, because He loves us. Jesus comes to us asa defenceless baby. Nothing could be lessintimidating or more costly. Why? So thatwe might come and live with Him forever, because He thinks "we're worth it",because He loves us.
That is God’s great gift to us thisChristmas time. May I wish each of you avery blessed and happy Christmas.
With love and prayers,
Jeremy Team Rector – Benefice of Magor

Working togetherMagor Marsh Wildlife Warriors Youth Group isworking with Council to develop a piece ofCommon land/woodland to the North of thevillages. The Warriors will plant a new hedge withsaplings from the Woodland Trust, and create twonew footpaths across the site to link up withexisting footpaths. Council has also beensuccessful in obtaining European funding for newinterpretation boards for the site. This jointproject has enabled the youngsters to learn manynew skills: identification of flora and fauna, batdetecting, tree planting, coppicing, working as ateam to clear scrubland, assisting the GWTDormouse Research Team. Also, in response tothe request in the May Fayre Magazine, severalresidents have come forward to offer their help toaccess and improve footpaths and bridle pathsthat link up with this site.
Community PlanThe Community Development Plan drawn upfollowing feedback from residents at variouspublic events will form part of the process inJanuary 2015 when the Council consider thebudgets for 2015/2016 and the amount ofPrecept to be set. The Precept is the amount ofmoney residents contribute, via Council Tax, tothe Community Council to enable them to operateand deliver projects and services in theCommunity. The Council will endeavour tomaintain the 2015/16 Precept at a similar level tothat of 2014/2015.

Home ZoneCouncil have continued to work with Mon CCHighways to reach a solution in respect of theparking issues in and around the Magor SquareHome Zone area, and at our request, work hasstarted creating additional parking spaces withinthe Square Car Park– hopefully to alleviatecongestion in the Square. Other small changesare planned, and these will be advertised on ourweb site.
Sycamore Playing FieldCouncil are delighted that following extensivediscussions they have been able to conclude theissues around the Playing Field and come upwith an acceptable proposal to prevent Mon CCclosing off the access footpath. The changes willtake some getting used to, but changes wereparamount to ensuring the safety of childrenusing the Sycamore Field.
Procurators HouseYou may have noticed security fencing placedaround the monument - a result of stones beingdislodged by children climbing on the walls.Discussions are awaited with Cadw beforeremedial repairs can be made and considerationgiven to safety measures to prevent furtherdamage caused by ‘budding rock climbers’. Mike Phillips, for many years Chairman ofThe Magor Churchmen, sadly passedaway on the 9th August 2014.
Mike was so much a part of the fabric ofour village, that many will feel that Magorhas lost one of it’s greatest sons. He wasthe driving force behind the establishmentof events that have now become a partof village life - the May Fayre, the FrostFayre, the Fireworks Display and theChristmas Eve Santa Run.
The Santa Run was started in 1985 byMike and it has run ever since. It’s a veryenjoyable part of Christmas Eve for allthose who take part, not least Santahimself! In 1986 Mike was electedChairman, and stayed in that role for over25 years. In that first year of hischairmanship, The May Fayre and FrostFayre were started. Ever since, the moniesraised each year by these events has risen. In the early years, about £20 was given tocharity. This year we were able to giveaway over £10,000.
For many years, Mike could be seen busyrestoring classic cars in his workshop - theOld Telephone Exchange - which nowhouses the Jazz hair salon and MistralArchitects and Surveyors. His skill andtalent in rebuilding and restoring vintagecars was widely known, yet despiterunning his own business, he would alwayshave the time to stop and chat over a cupof tea with anyone who called there. Mikebegan to offer his classic cars for wedding
hire and continued being the driver until illhealth prevented it. He said he couldn’tbelieve his luck - being paid to drive thesewonderful cars! He also enjoyed riding hisHarley Davidson. In later years, he alsostarted a Hog Roast business, which is stillrun today by his nephew.
After retiring and selling his businesspremises, Mike continued to busy himself- he belonged to the Chepstow walkinggroup, went to a computer club, and histalent as an artist was uncovered when hejoined the Undy & District Art Society.Despite ill health, Mike did several thingswhich many of us would not evenconsider - Microlight flying and helicoptertrial lessons were all taken in his stride!
Mike is missed by many people, not leastbecause of his positive attitude to life.Even in the midst of his medical problems,he could always be relied upon to smileand have a laugh. By his example andleadership, the Magor Churchmen’sSociety became a strong force within thecommunity, and his legacy is what you seein this year’s Frost Fayre and other eventsthroughout the year.

Best Kept Churchyard Award! The origins of the Magor Churchmen go back many decadesto the time when there was a needfor the Churchyard to be maintained and those who volunteered their time becameknown as the Magor Churchmen.
There is much work to do thesedays - grass cutting; headstonemaintenance, just to name two examples and this is managed and in
many cases actually done by John Parry - a long servingMagor Churchman. John and histeam have been recognised thisyear by winning the “Best KeptChurchyard” category in the GwentBest Kept Village Competition2014!
This is long overdue recognition forthe tireless work that John has carried out over many, many years!
