MAY RAINFALLOne of the best starts to May turnedinto disappointment later in themonth. Over 85mm of rain wasrecorded in the first 10 days with thehighest fall of 42mm occurring on the5th. Unfortunately the follow uprains were not there and our monthlytotal finished at 90.8mm, well underthe average of 142.0mm.Highest recorded for May was309.4mm in 1974, whilst the lowestwas 27.0 in 2006.

Suddenly the rain has stopped, buthasn’t the weather during the day beenreally lovely. I expect we will get somemore rain soon. Our Social Club is finding it difficult tofind affordable transport for day trips. Ifyou have any ideas please let us know.Just another reminder about your fluinjection. If you haven’t yet had them tryto go soon before the cold weather setsin.

BANDOn 9 May my friend and I went tolisten to the Silver Threads BrassBand performance at the MemorialHall. What a lovely time we had. With toes tapping and hands clappingit was really a very enjoyable show. The audience playing maracas andcastanets along with the band was ahighlight of the afternoon. The room was full of happy people. Itended all too soon but we enjoyed thecup of tea with sandwiches and cakesafter the show. Thanks to the Salvos.Wouldn’t it be nice if we could havesome kind of entertainment like thisevery couple of months? Perhapssome of our local school childrencould entertain us.

For the first time inmany years, Waroonais without joey, cub andscout leaders and thismeans that this year, there has been noopportunity for theyouth of Waroona and

surrounding towns to experiencescouting in Waroona. The aim of Scouting is to encourage thephysical, intellectual, social, emotional

JOEY, CUB & SCOUT LEADERS WANTEDand spiritual development of youngpeople so that they take a constructiveplace in society as responsible citizens, and as a member of their local, nationaland international communities. The Scout Association has a great facilityat Waroona in the Scout and Guide Hallon Fouracre street, with a complement ofoutdoor activity equipment. It’s not justhall based activities and tying knots andScouts cater for both boys and girls. Wehave great camping facilities inBusselton, Albany, Eaton, Byford and

closer to home at the old Wateroustownsite in the hills of Waroona. However without leaders to runprograms, scouting may be a thing of thepast for Waroona. If you are interestedin training to become a joey, cub or scoutleader, we would like to hear from you.Likewise if you have just moved toWaroona and have scouting skills, wewould also like to hear from you.Contact Debra Tyler on 041 770 5966.

DRIVERS BEWARERecent earthworks associated with thelaying of water pipeline on SomersRoad, have seen excavations on boththe east and west sides of the road, making some of the roadside edgessoft.    With further earthworkscontinuing on Somers Road, north ofCoronation Road, we think a timelyreminder to be wary of soft edges isdue.   Somers Road is busy at the momentwith large trucks to-ing and fro-ingcarting sand etc and passing trafficmust move off the road to pass safely.Recently a Waste Collection trucktravelling out to the tip ( and headingsouth)  came to grief as it moved off theroad and sank in the soft edges. Thankfully there were no injuries, andsignage has now been placed to warntraffic.

On May 18 thirteen Year 7 studentsfrom St Joseph's Primary School metwith Waroona Visitor Centre & GalleryManager, Tracy Goldsworthy, todiscuss places of interest within theShire. As part of the school’s

innovative Waroona QR Code Project, and under the guidance of PrincipalMatthew Faulkner, students will becreating web pages and QR codes will

ST JOSEPH’S QR PROJECTthen be installed at relevant sites. When scanned by a smartphone thecodes will take users on a world wideweb information journey. A QR (quickresponse) is similar to a barcode butrather than lines they consist of squaredots in a square pattern on a whitebackground. The timing of an article in the WeekendWest May 19-20 was quite interesting -it featured a Welsh town that hasinstalled these codes on plaques andstickers throughout its schools, museums, historical sites, businessesand even pubs. Monmouth is linked viathe codes to Wikipedia and visitors toMonmouth will soon be able to accessmore than 450 new articles from pointsof interest to flora and fauna in 26languages.A Wikipedia representative said thatthe Monmouth initiative had reallycaptured people’s imaginations in waysthey had not expected. He said that inthe end all it took was “a bunch ofpeople who are motivated andenergised”.

ARTS AND CRAFT GROUPA very pleasant and profitable Cuppa forCancer morning tea was held at theWaroona Creative Arts Centre.Entrance fees, raffle proceeds and saleof goods amounted to a staggering$1,200 raised, a record with we will findchallenging to beat. Comments heardfrom the many who enjoyed ourdelicious morning tea are always veryfavourable and help us put in the effortfor the Cancer appeal every year.Thank you to all who came andcongratulations to the raffle winners. 1st

that Sunday in April when the Mass wasbeing offered for the first anniversary ofPat’s death. There was even moredelight when Fr Robert said that a CD

AN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONwould be given to everyone after Mass tocelebrate the occasion.

Following the final hymn, which was alsofrom the new CD, Fr Robert and Jeffspent a long time signing copies for manypeople.

Many of the songs were recorded by Pat,Fr Rob and Jeff before Pat became ill inFebruary 2011. Pat wrote eleven of thesongs and Jeff wrote one. Fr Rob sings“Mary Our Mother” and adds harmony tothe others. Pat sings his other ten songsand Jeff his. Pat & Fr Rob play guitar andJeff adds all the other music.

The 3 Friends of God (3 Kaibigan ngDiyos) came together in October 2009when Pat was well enough to record. Attimes it seemed as if the first CD wouldnever be finished, as Pat & Fr Rob werein songwriting mode and it was hard tochoose what songs to use.

This CD, which was so welcomed forPat’s anniversary, is on sale at theWaroona Visitor Centre. Its title is “TheFace of our Saviour”.

The late Pat Leahy with Jeff and FatherRobert.

On Friday 18th May the Waroona DHSKindy and Pre-Primary children visitedthe NatureScapes Playground at King'sPark. There were streams, rocks, logs, mud and branches to play withhowever we decided to. Although thechildren got quite wet and muddy theyall had a fantastic time. It waswonderful to see them using theirimaginations and creativity out in thebush. We also participated in educationalactivities with the Pre-Primariesinvestigating habitats and what animalslive in the bush and the Kindy childrenmaking nature headbands. Special

thanks to all the parents who helpedout on the day as this trip required ahigh level of supervision and wecouldn't have gone without you all!

Working With Children (WWC)Applications: We currently stock theWWC application forms and canprocess your applications for you.Forms are to be filled out inblackinkand we take your photo to submit withthe application. Applicants are requiredto establish their '100 Point' proof ofidentity when submitting. Your 'proofdocuments must be originals, evencertified copies will not be accepted.Working with Children ApplicationRenewals: If your current WWC card isclose to expiry, you would usually(though not always!) receive a renewalnotice from the card issuer . Pleaseremember to bring this renewal letterwith you when submitting your renewalapplication as it will make the proof ofidentity process much quicker. Newphotos do have to be taken, and the fullapplication form must be completed .Letterbox Maintenance: As winter fastapproaches, now is a good time to catchup and do a bit of maintenance on yourletter box. This helps keep your mail ingood order.Little things like ensuring that yournumber is correct, complete & clear toread; that there is clear access to thebox for the Postie; that the letterbox lidfastens properly (prevents mail blowing

away in wild weather); seal any gaps toprevent rain dampening your mail andconsider, if your letterbox is really pastits use by date, replacing it altogether. If you do not have a letterbox, the postalcontractors are not required to deliveryour mail to you.Credit Card Payments: Sometimes, youneed to pay for something with a creditcard, but may feel insecure abouthanding out your card details. AustraliaPost now makes available a 'Load n Go'card that lets you put money on thecard to whatever amount you want, andthen you can use it to make payments, without having it connected to all yourother banking. This provides you withthe ability to limit your exposure shouldanyone try to use the card improperlyInternational Post Codes: If you aresending an item overseasEmbasssyworld.com website may beable to assist you in findinginternational post codes.Travelling overseas and need foreigncurrency: If you are expecting to traveloverseas, and want to take somecurrency with you, we are able to orderforeign currencies here at the post officefor you. It generally takes 3 days for themoney to arrive.Happy long weekend!

June is Senior Pet Month. Now thecolder weather has finally kicked in, it isimportant to take extra care of older pets. Most pets are considered seniors once theyare 7 or older (5 years for large or giantbreed dogs).

Diet: As your pet ages their nutritionalneeds change. With quality veterinary careand nutrition available today, pets are livinglonger and are thus at higher risk ofdeveloping old-age diseases such as arthritis, kidney disease and canine Alzheimer’s. Asenior diet should contain higher levels ofantioxidants, high-quality protein, essentialfatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and optimumlevels of fibre. Even if you don’t use apremium food (like Hills or Advance), mostsupermarket foods have formulationsspecifically for mature or senior pets.

Teeth:Tartar build-up and gingivitis arecommon problems in nearly all senior dogsand cats. Dental disease not only causes badbreath, but pain and discomfort when eatingand can also cause heart or kidney disease(from spread of bacteria from the gums intothe bloodstream). To help prevent dentaldisease feed raw bones 2-3 times a week orconsider switching to a specialised oral carediet (e.g. Hills t/d). You should check yourpet’s teeth on a regular basis for yellow orbrown stains or redness in the gums orbleeding. If any of these symptoms areapparent or there is a strong unpleasant

odour you should consider a dental check-up.

Lumps:Senior pets commonly developlumps in older age. Some lumps like cysts, warts and lipoma (fatty lumps) are not lifethreatening and can be easy to deal with. However, there are cancers that can alsocause skin lumps. It is recommended that ifyou find any lump on your pet you shouldget it checked by a vet. It is important totake note of when a lump first appeared andwhether it has changed at all over time(especially if it has grown a lot in a shortperiod of time).

Signs of Disease: Changes in behaviour orchanges in drinking, eating or toileting habitsmay be a sign of an underlying disease.Symptoms of old age diseases are often onlyevident once there has been significantinternal damage, so don’t wait until your pethas visible warning signs before switching toa senior diet and scheduling a veterinaryhealth check.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, in association withparticipating Veterinarians, is offering$20off a senior screening consultation tothe first 4,000 pet owners to register. To getyour voucher visit:

http://www.hillspet.com.au/en-au/seniors/save-on-senior-pet-screening.html

Parvovirus:We suspect we may see aresurgence of parvovirus infections around

town. We are urging dog owners to makesure their puppies have been vaccinated.Parvovirus is often characterised bypotentially life threatening vomiting anddiarrhoea. Unvaccinated puppies are themost common victims of the disease. However older, unvaccinated dogs are alsoat risk of becoming seriously unwell.Dogs affected by parvovirus can behospitalised and need treatment forextended periods (1 week+) which is nevereasy on the hip pocket. This disease isnoteasily treated, but is easily (andcheaply) prevented through vaccination. It is vitally important that ALL puppies areisolated until they finish the fullrecommended course of vaccinations. Notcompleting the course means your pet willnot be protected. Please ensure yourpuppy’s vaccinations are up to date.

Elizabeth Dzubiel, pictured putting thefinishing touches to some garden art,has entered the Sea to ART Exhibitioneach year since its inception. Her worksinclude two and three dimensional itemsusing a number of materials andtechniques, painting, sculpture, jewellery, printing, and glass and multi-media pieces. While at home with her children in thesixties and seventies Elizabeth sewedand honed her creative skills, and whenthe opportunity arose took eveningclasses in pottery. Starting formal artsstudies in her thirties by undertaking afull-time Fine Arts Studies course atClaremont School of Art, she then wenton to get her Diploma in Teaching (Art &English) and Bachelor of Education.During her time as a teacher Elizabethtook all opportunities to involve herstudents, including those from SpecialEd, in outdoor projects around theirschools. This was then extended to off-campus projects such as murals in theFremantle Hospital Children’s ward andon the entry to the Community Hall onCanning Hwy, Melville. In the nineties Elizabeth successfullyapplied for a position in the Placement inIndustry Scheme through the Education

Department. This saw her taking up aposition at Artsworkshop, one ofAustralia's leading set building andmanufacturing facilities for the theatreand entertainment industry. During thattime Elizabeth was involved in projectsfor His Majesty’s Theatre, Scitech andmany schools that used the company tocreate sets for their drama productions. She found this period in her career to beparticularly rewarding.Elizabeth, ‘retired’ and living in the hills

of Waroona with her partner John, enjoys her involvement in the localcommunity. In keeping with her art andteaching background, she last yearhelped the children of St Joseph’sPrimary School create a glass mosaicnow installed in the school’s library. Theproject, funded by Alcoa and Shire ofWaroona, saw the students involvedfrom the design stage right through toconstruction and completion.Elizabeth’s favourite pastime is indulgingher creative interests so we again lookforward to her valuable contribution tothe Sea to ART Exhibition. In addition toexhibiting, Elizabeth is an active andenthusiastic committee member withinnovative ideas particularly when itcomes to sculpture. I for one certainlycan’t wait to see what she will come upwith in 2012!

A few people on Thatcher Street mayhave noticed a new letter box. Itbelongs to Bob and Zillah Taylor. Nowthat autumn is here with windy and wetweather they don’t want a repeat oflast winter with the wind blowing opentheir old ‘top loader’ and sticking outmail getting wet.

Therefore they’veimported fromAmerica agenuine US mailbox and haveerected it on anadditional postfastened to ajarrah plankbeneath. The

mail box is black and huge, measuring21.5” in depth, 10.5” in height and8.125” in width with its door at the front. It also sports a red metal flag which iserected to notify the postie of astamped addressed envelope inside tobe taken back to the PO sorting officefor forwarding. This doesn’t happenhere of course, only in America. It has been tried out in our recent wetweather and none of their mail orperiodicals has got wet.Can this mail box be the only one of itskind in Waroona?

This month we haveagain seen anumber of peoplecharged with drink

driving offences. A couple of thosecharged were involved in crashes. Ifyou drink and drive, you will not beinsured. The Shire of Waroona recentlyupgraded the town CCTV. As a result,we arrested a 16 and 15 year maleregarding a burglary on the WaroonaBakery and Cafe the same day it wascommitted. Both youths will beappearing in the Mandurah Children’sCourt on the 28th of May.We also charged a 38 year old maleand 31 year old female from Perth withTrespass and Stealing offences whichoccurred at the Old Abattoir onWaterous Road, Wagerup on Saturdayevening. They will be appearing inMandurah Magistrates Court on the22nd of June.Reduce your risk of motor vehiclecrime. We are still receiving reports ofthefts from unlocked vehicles. Mostcriminals are opportunistic and willtake the easy option when it is on offer. Before you leave your vehicle, askyourself these 5 questions:1. Have I removed the key from the

ignition?2. Are all the windows up and all doors

locked?3. Have I removed all valuables

including the GPS?4. Have I left anything with my personal

or address details in the vehicle?5. Have I parked in a secure and/or

well lit area?Times have changed. You can’t leaveyour car unlocked anymore. We haveincluded a link to our CommunitySafety section of our Western Australia

Police website. Please take the time totake a look.http://communitysafety.police.wa.gov.au/Over the last couple of months therehave been an increase in reportedthefts in the Wagerup area. Please be

vigilant and report any suspiciousactivity immediately to Police. A ToyotaHilux utility similar to above has beenseen acting suspiciously in the area. Ifyou have any information regarding thisute or its occupants, we would like tohear from you either directly to us at thestation or to Crime Stoppers.Enjoy your Foundation Day longweekend and stay safe.May Charges46 year old male Exceed 05 BAC20 year old male Aggravated Assault

WAROONA PLAYGROUP UPDATEAfter being our secretary for the last 10months, Rowan Beales has gone backto work which means she is no longerable to continue with the position ofsecretary. There is a two-letter word that perhaps hasmore meaning than any other two –letterword, and that isUP.It’s easy to understandup, meaning towardthe sky or at the top of the list, but when weawaken in the morning, why do we wakeup? At a meeting, why does a topic comeup? Why do we speakup, and why are thecandidatesup for election and why is itupto the secretary to writeup a report? We callup our friends, and we use it tobrightenupa room, polishup the silver; wewarmup the leftovers and cleanup thekitchen. We lockupthe house and someguys fixup the old car. At other times thelittle word has real special meaning.People stirup trouble, lineup for tickets, workup an appetite and thinkupexcuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to bedressedup is special.Upis confusing. A blocked drain must beopenedup because it is stoppedup. Weopenup a shop in the morning but we closeitup at night. We seem to be pretty mixedup aboutup! To be knowledgeable about the properuses ofup, look the wordupin thedictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, ittakesup almost ¼th of the page and canaddup to about thirty definitions. If you areup to it, you might try buildingup a list of

UP

the many waysup is used. It will takeup alot of your time, but if you don’t giveup, youmay windup with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it iscloudingup. When the sun comes out wesay it is clearingup. When it rains, it wets the earth and oftenmesses thingsup. When it doesn’t rain fora while, things dryup. One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap itup, for now my time isup, so ….. it is time toshutup…..

On the 28 May 2012, a new nationalbusiness names register went live. The change will affect you if you wantto register a new business name, if youalready have a business nameregistered in WA or another State orTerritory, or if you want tocarry out a search to seewhether a business isregistered. The national system will seethe Australian Securities andInvestments Commission(ASIC) manage theregistration of businessnames for the whole country.Current State and Territoryservices will cease tooperate and the registeredbusiness names informationheld by agencies likeConsumer Protection, including expirydates, will automatically transfer acrossto the new national system. From late May business name renewalforms will come from ASIC. If you havea business name due to be renewedbetween 28 May and July 2012, youmay receive the form later than usual.Don’t panic; your business name willnot be deregistered and you will getextended time for renewal to make sureyou’re not disadvantaged by the launchof the national register. The idea behind a single nationalsystem is to reduce red tape, save timeand cut costs for business. It meansbusinesses will no longer have toregister their business names in everyState and Territory in which they wantto trade. Being on the one ASIC-runregister allows businesses to forgetabout our borders and operate inter-state.

Business name holders with duplicatenames registered in multiplejurisdictions should choose to keep oneand let the rest expire (or speed up theprocess by cancelling the names nolonger required). In the event of

identical names held bydifferent businesses indifferent States, all the nameswill transfer to the newregister and they will beidentified by their State orTerritory, for example XYZbakery (Western Australia)and XYZ Bakery (Tasmania).Going forward duplication ofnames will be avoided

because there is a singleAustralian register.A key benefit is the onlinefocus of the new system.

Businesses will be able to register andrenew their national business namesvia the dedicated website:www.abr.gov.au. There are one-year($30) and three-year ($70) registrationoptions available. Online payment ispossible too. For Western Australiansthe fees decrease slightly under thenational service. The business name registration will becombined with a free AustralianBusiness Number (ABN) registration, giving the business owner a registeredname and ABN at the end of a singletransaction.A podcast will be available to downloadinformation atwww.asic.gov.au.If you require further information on thisor any other consumer issue, pleasecall into our office on the 8th Floor of theBunbury Tower, 61 Victoria Street,Bunbury, or call us on(08) 97 222 888or1300 30 40 54. (Consumer Protection is a division ofthe Department of Commerce)You can now follow us on Twitter@ConsumerWA or become a fan of ourFacebook page - Consumer ProtectionWA.

It has been a sad month for our districtcouncil, with the passing of one of ourmost committed and faithful members,Mrs Rosemary Smith. Rosemary was anamazing lady, so full of love and alwayswilling to offer a helping hand right untilthe end. She faithfully visited Pam CorkerHouse every Wednesday morning withfresh flowers picked from her garden toput a smile on the residents’ faces andbring a little bit of Jesus into their lives. She was always out and about everydayon her gopher displaying proudly herAussie flags visiting and helping others inneed and always took part in theAustralia Day Parade. She will be sorelymissed by everyone who knew her. Oursincerest condolences go out to herfamily at this time.

We would like to express our gratitude toEvent Assist who donated $800 to ourcause last month from proceeds of the AllAustralian Car Show held in Pinjarra. Thecheque was received by ChaplainDebbie Lysaght at a luncheon held at the

You may have noticed some posters andboxes around the place labelled“Foneraiser”. These are here for anyonewho has an old mobile phone whetherbroken or not, to put into the bin forrecycling. This is a easy and free way ofraising money for our charity and weactually receive about $3 per phone! Soget on board and help out our great cause! The role of our district council is to placechaplains and scripture teachers intolocal schools to care for the socialwellbeing of students, staff and theirfamilies. The chaplains provideemotional, mental, physical and spiritualsupport to the school community. If youhave a heart for the young people in ourcommunity and have a few spare hourseach month to give, WE WANT YOU! Weare always looking for people to assist infundraising and support for our dedicatedChaplains and Scripture teachers inPinjarra/Waroona. Please contact John

The Shire of Waroona and the OldDrakesbrook School MemorialFootprint Project have been featured ina recent publication by Community ArtsNetwork WA (CAN WA) titled “GrowingCommunities Arts and Culture in LocalGovernment.” Growing Communitiescelebrates the contribution that localgovernment makes to communitycreativity, arts and well being byworking to support local communityinitiatives.

Waroona Community DevelopmentOfficer Maree Ellis and WaroonaHistorical Society Vice PresidentGlenece Walmsley travelled to Perthrecently to the official launch at CANWA of the publication by theHonourable John Day, Minister forCulture and the Arts. In all, there are

10 local governments featured in thebook including the Cities of Bunbury,Perth, Armadale, Mandurah,Rockingham and Melville and theShires of Waroona, Katanning andMullewa and the town of Port Hedland. The publication shows a range ofdiverse projects and programs anddemonstrates how arts and culturalactivities can bring people together, enhance local skills and build thecapacity of local communities. Also featured in the same publication,in a different project, is former Waroonaresident, Bradley Iseppi. The city ofBunbury “Bridging the Gap: CircusTrain – Slow Down” was a collaborationbetween two community group artprojects – former railway workers andthe Disability In the Arts, Disadvantagein the Arts, a community artsorganisation seeking council funding tohelp Bunbury men and women withdisability create a public artwork in aprominent public space.A union of disability and railway historyin the final sculpture was recognised inthe form of the joined casts of twohands. One was Dave (Jock) Lindsay’s– a railway man who had led the pushfor rail worker’s recognition. The otherwas the hand of Bradley Iseppi.Bradley now lives in Australind andworks at the Activ Foundation’sbusiness services making Visy boardpackaging and labels for wine. He alsovolunteers in the community fororganisations including St. JohnAmbulance. Much earlier in Bridgingthe Gap, one of Bradley’s charcoal

MORE SECURITY FOR QUAMBIEPARK

Quambie Park Waroona has takenanother step in the Capital WorksProject of installing surveillancecameras around the complex with theengagement of Spyker BusinessSolutions which specialises inInformation Technology and CCTVsolutions and services. Paul Willemse, the owner of Sypker Business Solutionspossesses 24 years experience in theIT industry and has been designing andinstalling CCTV for the past 4 years.General Manager Ken Landwehr hasbeen working closely with the WaroonaShire Community Development Officer,Maree Ellis. The Shire has alsoengaged the services of Spyker andinstalled some new cameras. The proposal to supply and install theClosed Circuit Television infrastructurewill further improve security for the aqedwhose home is Quambie Park and itwould mean the criminal damage whichleft a huge impact on staff and residentswith seven cars badly damaged andbroken into Christmas Eve 2006 wouldalmost certainly be eliminated.Ken said “It was a horrible experiencewith all concerned feeling vulnerable”particularly on the morning of ChristmasDay and the Board of Management hasbeen pro actively working on theCapital Works Project.A grant application may allow the wholeproject to be completed in its entiretyhopefully within two months.

Council was requested to adopt a newLocal Planning Policy that will guide theconstruction of outbuildings within theShire. The new policy will seek to ensurethat outbuildings are constructed to a highquality and design, are suitably sized fortheir location, appropriately sited and usedso they do not adversely impact on theamenity of the surrounding area. Thepolicy was accepted unanimously.

The budget was amended to allow thepurchase of a Polaris RZR570 EFI all-terrain vehicle for Preston Beach at a costof $14,987. This cost was transferred fromthe Preston Volunteer Ranger’s reserve.

A request has been made for the MurrayMotorcycle Club to locate a club in the LakeClifton Area. Council advised the Club thatthe area selected was not a preferred siteand that much more information wasneeded before a full assessment wasmade. Council does support theestablishment of a trail bike club at anappropriate location within the Peel Regionas long as all relevant strategies, policiesand requirements are met.

Council’s budgets has been reviewed toreflect a number of differences between thebudget and actual expenditure.

FROM THE MAY COUNCIL MINUTES (UNCONFIRMED)

Council resolved that the paving of footpathon South Western Highway in front of Lots76 and 66 ( St Vinnies and the old GardenCentre) be considered in the 2012/2013budget, and that the work be limited toCouncil property only.

A recommendation that Councilreconsiders nominating a Councillordelegate to the Harvey River LandConservation District Council and theHarvey River Restoration TaskforceCommunity Panel lapsed as there was nomover for the motion.

A request for a grant by Templeman TwellsWeb Design of $2,000 to assist with theestablishment of a retail outlet shop at 22Fouracre Street was approved by Council, the funds being paid from the 2012/13budget after 1 July.

A resolution was passed that the ActingDirector Technical Services be requestedto investigate with Main Roads WA thepossibility of the installation of a cross walkor flashing light crossing on South WestHighway adjacent to the National AustraliaBank.

Complete copies of Council Agendas andMinutes are available at the WaroonaLibrary.

BEWARE OF BANKACCOUNT FRAUD.

Be careful to check your bankaccount balance regularly andyour bank statements, as thewriter found this week that anunknown Direct Debit wasinstalled on her account inFebruary and has beenfraudulently withdrawing smallamounts each month. The first three month'swithdrawals were very small, about $1 - $4, and I wasn'tconcerned as I thought that theymay be bank fees of some kind. This month the amount wasabout $54.00. Obviously, as theyhadn't been detected earlier, thefraudsters grew in confidence. My bank has now been notified. If you find any inconsistencies inyour statements notify your bankimmediately.

On Thursday 3rd May a thank youlunch was hosted by Event Assist inthe Boardwalk Café at the AustralianSailing Museum, Mandurah.Attending were representatives fromthe Pinjarra-Waroona Youthcare, who provide Chaplains to schoolsacross the area and Austin CoveBaptist College Parents & FriendsCommittee.

These two organisations providedsupport services includingEvaluation Survey interviews,Smoke Free Event compliance andcontrol of the Wine & Gourmet Exposection at this successful ClassicCar Event. Their efforts wererewarded with the proceeds of GoldCoin donations collected on the day.

Event Assist Chairperson, TerryCockerham presented certificates ofappreciation and funding cheques toYouthcare Chaplain, Debbie

A well-known proverb states that anoptimistic would say a glass is halffull, while a pessimist would say it ishalf empty. What would people ofdifferent professions and walks oflife say?TheBANKER would say that theglass has just under 50% of its networth in liquid assets.TheGOVERNMENT would say thatthe glass is fuller than if theopposition party were in power.TheOPPOSITION would say that itis irrelevant because the presentadministration has changed the waysuch volume statistics are collected.TheECONOMIST would say that, inreal terms, the glass is 25% fullerthan at the same time last year.ThePHILOSOPHER would say that,if the glass was in the forest and noone was there to see it, would it behalf anything?ThePSYCHIATRIST would ask,“What did your mother say about theglass?”ThePHYSICIST would say that thevolume of this cylinder is divided intotwo equal parts; one a colourless, odourless liquid, the other acolourless, odourless gas. Thus thecylinder is neither full nor empty.Rather, each half of the cylinder isfull, one with a gas, one with a liquid.TheSEASONED DRINKER wouldsay that the glass doesn’t haveenough ice in it.

A simple home test.Rotary Bowelscan uses faecal occult blood test (FOBT) screening kits. The test discovers blood passed from the bowelthat's invisible to the naked eye, which can be an early warning of cancer. Conducted annually, it provides a very goodchance of early detection and a high probability of successful treatment. How the program works.First, you buy a test kit from Waroona Chemmart Pharmacy during Bowelscan Month until mid June for just $8. Youtake the kit home, take some samples according to the instructions, and drop the kit into the collection bin at thepharmacy by June 14.Your kit is sent to Bowelscan's generous supporters Western Diagnostic, who do the lab test free of charge. Bowelscan'sMedical Coordinator then notifies you of the result, and also notifies your GP if the test is positive. Confidentiality ismaintained at all times. There are a number of causes of 'hidden blood', so if your test is positive it's not certain that you have polyps or bowelcancer. To determine the source of the blood, your GP will refer you for acolonoscopy.Danger begins at 40.Your risk of bowel cancer jumps significantly from age 40, and doubles every five years until 60 (when the risk startsto increase even faster). This is why Rotary Bowelscan is recommended to anyone 40 or over. Please don’t wait for symptoms.Remember, Bowelscan is for people who are not showing any signs of bowel cancer. If you have any direct familyhistory of bowel cancer, any blood showing in bowel motions, or any recent changes in bowel habits, you should talkto your GP right away.Waiting to see symptoms is waiting too long.Bowelscan is a Rotary community service program, and no profit is made by either Rotary or participatingpharmacies. Bowelscan is an awareness program, not a medical service. All medical services are provided bylicensed general practitioners and pathologists.

Another season has passed and althoughwe did struggle a little we managed to still becompetitive. There is a lot of thanks to be passed aroundand most of it was covered at our windup. However one man’s contribution wentunnoticed and the club would like to expresstheir gratitude and thanks to Shane Lommanwho has stepped down as president of theWarriors. The effort you have put into theclub has been huge and we look forward toyour continuing support. The new committee was selected at theAGM held recently and they are: President- Daniel Dodds, V. President - RichardPollock, Secretary - Peter Reynolds andTreasurer - Mark Butler. Thank you to allthose who attended the AGM enabling theclub to keep pushing forward in the rightdirection. We are still looking for players for the club. The A Grade are definitely in need of someyoung talent around to enable us to stay inthe A Division of the Peel CricketAssociation. If anyone knows of any youngguys available, with the main criteria beingable to bat. Bowling will help also. Giveanyone on the committee a call and get tohelp the Waroona Warriors back on track. If anyone wants to check out our playinghistory for the season please go tohttp://mycricket.cricket.com.au/

The cricket club will be back each monthwith an brief update for the DrakesbrookDespatch to inform all the residents ofwhat’s happening at Ward Pavilion on thehill.I do need to extend a very big thank you toAlcoa for their support and the providing ofBravo Grants and Action funding and thevolunteering of the workers of Acoa. I willmention in the next issue the people whogave us their Bravo Grants, ensuring I don’tforget anyone. Once again thank you toAlcoa and we look forward to yourcontinued support of not only the cricketclub but of all the sporting clubs who benefitfrom your generosity in the region. One last thing is that at the end of the yearwindup we had a nice surprise in that ournow Vice President Richard Polllock pulledtogether a heap of local farmers and they alldonated hay with the proceeds to be splitwith the Waroona Football Club..So on behalf of both clubs thank you to allthe farmers who provided the hay. Here aretheir names: C Odorisio, E Walmsley, LTognela, M Walmsley, D Hodgson, P Kau,R Hull, N Birch, A Angi, J Mitchell, R Caratti,R Davis, P Caratti, Alcoa Farmlands, TDerosa, V & E Pitter, S Pinzoni and DRobinson.

Matt Riggio has done himself proud bybeing a late inclusion in the West AustralianFootball League State Team against SouthAustralia last Saturday. He was listed in thetop four players and his move onto the ballby the Coach Christ Waterman helpedspark a second half revival by the BlackSwans to only go down by 14 points.Matt commenced his football journey as aJunior under the active Waroona JuniorFootball Club programme prior to playingfor Peel Thunder League Squad and beingdrafted by North Melbourne in the PremierAFL Competition. His North Melbourneguernsey, presented by his family, sitsproudly on the wall of the Waroona Demons

Social Hall in recognition of hisachievements. He is currently a Swan Districts contractedWAFL player after being delisted by theKangaroos and has given himself anoutside chance of being re drafted as amature age footballer. Parents Rick andVicki Riggio would have been glued to theABC Television as the short notice of hisselection would have prevented themwitnessing his performance first hand atGlenelg Oval, South Australia.Congratulations Matt, your home town ofWaroona remains very proud along withyour family and friends.

WAROONA FOOTBALL CLUBNOTES BY FORWARD POCKET.

Waroona Demons continue to excel in allthree grades with Leagues and Reservesbeing located in the top two in the Seniorgrades.Waroona Colts just went down by 3 pointsto Mandurah at Rushton Park last Sundayand the talent in this team has Coach JamieJovanovich excited. They sit in fourthposition with a likely finals participation.Waroona Reserves, despite a very poorlast term, took its foot off the pedal andmanaged to last, with the final margin ofseven points due to an inaccurateMandurah Mustangs. Sean Giumelli wasoutstanding as a roaming wingman andmust be pushing for League selection again.Waroona League squad showed their fulltalent and depth by an empathic secondhalf blitz after trailing by one point at the halfway mark. Nineteen goals in a half offootball whilst under pressure was trulyremarkable by the defending Premiers. The depth of the team is second to noneand despite further injuries during the gameto full forward “Foxy” Wilson and RyanCourt. The latter, at centre half back hadkept Mandurah Captain Greg Sanders toonly a few touches. Russell Shore with hisfive goals was adjudicated best on groundand his grandfather Adie Alexander, afterbeing laid to rest on Friday, would havebeen smiling in admiration of hisgrandson’s performance along with all theother talented Colts’ players. RhysAnzellino in his League debut also was athome after a nervous start in the first termand cousins Jayden Derosa and KyleDerosa were not overawed. Their tacklingand enthusiasm for the contest was afeature. Key utility players Courtney Lakay,Ben Wright and Matt Thomas also lead theway in leadership and football skills. SteeleCourt showed why he is rated the bestLeague ruckman in the Peel FootballLeague and he gave a clear demonstrationof what centre square dominance means toa winning football team’s end performance.President Deb Clancy is still smiling and theDemons are doing some good work in theCommunity as well as on the playing field.Full particulars in the July edition. The last twelve months have been anincredible year for our Club. If youattended the AGM you would have heardTerry present the financial statement ofour Club. Undoubtedly we are in a strongfinancial position, mainly due to the hugereduction in paid staff. The Volunteersystem we are currently using has beena great success. People have started totake ownership of their Club and arestarting to talk about and take pride inthe way the Club is beginning to look. However, we do still need morevolunteers. The more we have the lesswork for everyone and no one ends upburning out. It is great that you havestarted to take ownership of the Club, butwhen you look with pride at the Club, doit because you have helped get it to thatstate. At this stage, as I did at the AGM, itwould be amiss of me not that thank afew people. I will start by thankingeverybody who has volunteered to dosomething at the Club; we could notfunction without you. However, I wouldlike to single out the following:• Jeffrey Dixon for his work on ‘A’

green throughout the summermonths, it was very hot and hardwork and for a man of his age heshould have known better.

• Wally and June Maughan for thework with the gardens.

• Sheila Panton for everything shedoes, she is an amazing woman.

• Mick Lloyd and Bob Clark forcleaning the beer lines andpurchasing stock.

• Neil Williams and Joan Scott forbeing our Patron and Patroness. Iam pleased to say that they bothwish to continue.

• Kim Johnson for everything shedoes. There are so many hidden

things that people don’t realize youdo.

• Kathie Halfyard and Terry Clark forthe way they decorate the Club roomup for functions. Kathie is no longera committee member and Terry’sposition as treasurer does notinclude this. I am convinced that thisis a huge factor in the turn around ofthis Club.

This year our fees will go up slightly.Every year Bowls WA increase thecapitation fees, which means we get lessand less out of your membership fees.Even with the increased price you willfind we are still the cheapest Club in theLeague. The new fees are: FullMembership - $140, Recreational Bowler- $100,Social Member - $40 (This has not hadan increase for seven years.), JuniorBowler - $30 and Junior Member - $10.Moving on to the subject of Bowls, thisyear we have had the best mixed socialbowls I have experienced at this Club. With one or two exceptions, theatmosphere is friendly, lighthearted andvery enjoyable. Mark Hiller’s sponsorshipof many of these events has beentremendous and the way it has beenorganized has made it all the moreenjoyable. This year the PresentationNight was the best I have experiencedand the Closing Day Bowls was reallytremendous. To see the fun andcamaraderie on the green makes thework I do at the Club fully worthwhile. The winter weather usually closes downa lot of our bowling events, but as long asit is not pouring with rain; ‘B’ Green is stillrunning well. Thursday Scroungers willcontinue at 2.30pm (All you need to do isturn up before 2.15pm) and SaturdayTriples starts at 1.30pm. For this youneed to enter a team by Friday evening.

BOWLING CLUB NEWS

Friday Nights are still going well. The‘Jag the Joker’ is now worth $4,500.Tickets for drinks purchased areavailable from 4.30pm until 7.30pm. Thefootball looks amazing on our new largescreen TV and the meals are still thebest in town and great value for money. Finally Congratulations to newManagement Committee, which is madeup as follows:President:– Mike Whitney, VicePresident:– Sharyee Hayes, Secretary:–Barbara Hiller, Treasurer:– Terry Clark,Men’s Captain:– Mark Hiller, LadiesCaptain:– Eileen MacDonald, SocialSecretary:– Juanita Musgrave, otherCommittee Members: Mick Lloyd, KimJohnson, Hazel McCall and Dennis Tyler.
