HAVE YOUR SAY.A resident has asked the question: is itright for a night shift worker to demandtotal silence from neighbours during theday? No music, no lawn mowing, keepthe children quiet and do not let the dogbark. It is understandable that nightshiftworkers need to sleep during daylighthours, but how reasonable is it toexpect life in the neighbourhood tocome to a standstill while they do so?Reader’s comments are invited.

WAROONA POLICE MAKESTIME FOR STUDENTS.

Sergeant Jeff Taylor kindly took timeout from his busy schedule to visitwith the Year 10 students fromWaroona District High School lastweek. The Sergeant talked about thevariety and diversity of careers in thepolice force and what students

needed to do in regards toschooling..The Year 10’s were engaged as Jefftold them stories about some of thetasks he performs in the community, including car chases and RoadsideBreath Tests. Students were evenmore excited when the Sergeant tookthem out to show them his policevehicle and put on the sirens.Waroona District High Schoolappreciates the police for theirsupport in the community and withinthe school. We look forward to seeingSergeant Jeff back again soon, perhaps with a Taser Gun Displaynext time.

Students paid close attention to Sgt.Jeff Taylor.

WAROONA LIBRARY BOOK CLUB

This month we read the novels of Iris Johansen who was not wellknown amongst our group, although one or two had previously readher. Johansen writes three genre; romances, historical romancesand mystery crime. She can’t help but add a little romance into thecrime stories, the latter being the books which we read andreviewed

Book Club was divided in their opinions of her books. One or two loved her andread two or three of the chosen books, whilst others were either indifferent orexpressed strongly their dislike. Most of the crime mystery stories havea large component of the supernaturalwith the main characters havingexpertise of spiritual or thesupernatural. They are able to carry outextraordinary feats including readingthe minds of others or controllingpeople’s actions. A bit spooky to somereaders.Among the comments were that theplots in some books failed, were twothin, no substance and too far fetched. With Johansen writing a series ofbooks, if the reader began at thesecond or third book they were leftwondering what it was all about. Somemembers found her writing two wordy, with too much dialogue and not enoughbackground information to the story. The group of members who enjoyed thebooks found them light reading withsome romance and mild supernaturalthemes. To each their own. If you likea light read then perhaps you can try IrisJohansen and form your own opinion. This month we are reading Robert Craisan author of the mystery crime actiongenre. Crais's usual protagonist andfirst-person narrator is private detectiveElvis Cole, an ex-Ranger. Cole'spartner is Joe Pike, a formerMarine.Crais tackles a variety of subjects in hisnovels. While we get our heads intoCrais, we hope that you too will have amonth of HAPPY READING.

INNOVATIONS IN STYLELUXURY AND SERVICE

L to R: John Ellis, Josh Ellis and AlexMcCormack (missing from photo

Dave Jenkins)

Have you noticed a lone bike rider poundingthe roads around Waroona and Coolup ona mountain bike lately? It could be JohnEllis in serious training for the GibbChallenge, a

700+ kilometre push bike ride from Derby toEl Questro Wilderness Park, 5 days ofKimberley magic & a little bit of pain (haveyou seen the road?) and all for a goodcause! This year, the charity team relayevent will be held from Sunday 27th May toThursday 31st May. For those who may nothave travelled that far North, the road is

mostly gravel except for the first 70 or sokilometres, with the occasional rivercrossing and some serious jump ups (hills).Let’s hope for the team’s sake that thegrader has been out and about before theyget there. On the first day, they will travel alittle over 220 kilometres to the first rest stopSilent Grove a place of amazing beautyalthough one wonders if the boys will haveany energy left to appreciate this fact orwhether their swags will hold moreattraction.Known as the Exsports, the local teamcomprising of John and Josh Ellis, DaveJenkins and Alex McCormack haveearmarked their funds raised to go to MS(Multiple Sclerosis) research through theMS society of WA. If you would like to getbehind this great cause and support theboys in their quest, go towww.everydayhero.com.au/exsports.Alternately donations can be made direct toMaree Ellis (John’s not so energetic wife)who will join them in Kununurra at the endof the trip, choosing to take four wheelsinstead of two.Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronicdegenerative and often disablingneurological disease. There is no knowncause and there is no cure. The MS Societyof WA provides a welcome sanctuary formedical, physical and emotional assistanceto its ever-increasing list of Members.

RIDING FOR A GOOD CAUSE CLEAN UP AUSTRALIAIt was a shame Waroona wasn’t involved inCleaning Up Australia Day. There is somuch rubbish around in streets and on thehighway. Waroona Guides and Leaderswent to Cookernup instead, to pick uprubbish. One of our guide’s mum lives thereand organised the clean-up.Why is there so much rubbish lying around? Are people too lazy to put it in the bin? Ahouse in my street puts their bin out eachweek next to a pile of junk papers! Whydon’t they pick them up and put them in thebin? The Shire comes along and mows theverge and the easterly winds blow shredsfurther down the street. In Eastcott Streetthe easterly winds blow rubbish across theroad to the units in Quambie Park. Whydon’t people pick up their papers? Why do people have their bins overflowingwith rubbish for the easterly winds to blowhalf of it out and down the street. As far asI am concerned once the bin on the Shireverge, anyone can put a bag of rubbish in aslong as it isn’t full. We do it in our street andI know it happens in other streets. Pleasehelp keep Waroona clean. Is Waroona going to be involved in CleanUp the World in September? I would like tosee families adopt a section of the highwayand take responsibility to help keep it clean. My point is: if your bin is full, use anotherone in your street, as long as it’s on theverge and there is room.

There are many benefits to desexing yourpets. Some of the advantages include:

• Your pet will no longer be able to breedso you won’t be bringing unwantedpuppies and kittens into the world. Somany animals are put to sleep due tooverpopulation, please don’t play a rolein adding to the problem with unplannedmatings.

• It can eliminate many annoying habits inmales such as tomcats spraying urine andthe urge of male dogs to mount childrenand adults’ legs.

• Males will be less aggressive to othermales (less cat fight abscesses and dogfights which can lead to vet bills).

• Reduces or prevents hormone drivendominance issues in males. By desexingyour male before he experiences thatfirst rush of male hormones at sexualmaturity means you won’t see as many ofthe dominance or aggression problemsthat can occur when puppies “grow up”and turn into teenagers (so to speak).

• Reduces your pets urge to roam lookingfor a mate (which can end up costly foryou if your pet is involved in an accidentor attacks someone or in impound feesif they are picked up the ranger).

• Health benefits are evident for bothmales and females. Males are less likelyto have prostate issues or testicular

tumours when older. Females are lesslikely to develop mammary (breast)cancer. Desexing females means nocoming into season, no bleeding, noannoying crying/calling (female cats), nofalse pregnancies and no potentially lifethreatening uterine infections(pyometra).

• Reduced dog registration fees each yearwill cover the cost of the operation overthe life of your pet.

A common myth is that a desexed pet willbecome fat and lazy. This is untrue. Anadult desexed pet has a decreased energyrequirement so they just need to be fedless! Just remember your pet does notopen the tin or bag of food themselves!Too much food and not enough exercise isthe main cause of obesity.

Important questions to ask when desexingyour pet

Hopefully desexing is the only surgicalprocedure your pet ever requires. Forfemales especially it is a major abdominalsurgery and should include a high standardof care. There is certain information thatpet owners should be aware of when theirpet is desexed. Similar soundingprocedures, when examined in detail, differfrom vet to vet. What initially appearscheap or a bargain is often at the cost ofsomething to your pet. Most knowledge

the public have about a vet clinic is limitedto the waiting or consult rooms. I’m alwayswary when I see these areas taking morefloor space than the rest of the buildingwhere your animal is meant to have asterile procedure performed. Wheninquiring about services, ask what isincluded in the procedure. Is the price allinclusive or are antibiotics and pain reliefadditional? What kind of anaesthetic isused? Inquire who will perform theprocedure, what their training level is, andwhat anaesthetic monitors are used. Arenew sets of sterile instruments used foreach patient? Are disposable materialsreused amongst patients (they shouldn’t beby the way)? A quality clinic should behappy to talk about these factors. Or makea time with your clinic to come in and tourthe facilities and see for yourself!

An observant resident noticed a nastybrown sticky substance on the seat ofthe community sofa in the main street. The resident informed the Shire, asking for someone to clean up themess, but was advised the sofa is, infact, on the Waroona Hotel’s land andtherefore not the Shire’sresponsibility. The sticky mess, whichby that time had been joined by amelted white lolly stuck fast to theseat, was mentioned in conversationto Bill Rafferty. Bill decided toundertake the clean-up. Armed withbuckets of hot water brought fromhome, detergent and a de-greasingagent, he soaked the mess and thenscraped with a chisel, a screw driverand other sharp implements. Aftertwo hours of hard scrubbing the seatwas clean.

The sofa is an asset to our communityand is frequently used. Accidents dohappen but ignoring the result is notacceptable. Please clean up afteryourselves and if unable to do so, atleast report the accident so that it canbe dealt with quickly.Thank you to Bill Rafferty for hisunstinting voluntary service to thecommunity.

After tryingseveral times the supplier was againcontacted and provided theinformation that the website wasunder maintenance and to try againafter a certain date. The website wasduly tried a number of times after thisdate to no avail. Finally the supplierwas contacted yet again and an emailby return complimented the saucepanowner on their patience, and that theywere sending the required lids free ofcharge. These have now arrived andMeyer Cookware Australia Pty Ltdare to be congratulated on theircustomer service.

One of the holiest festivals in theChristian calendar, Easter is celebratedaround the world with great fanfare andreligious fervour. It is celebrated as theday Jesus Christ rose from the deadfollowing his crucifixion. But manyEaster traditions, particularly eggs andrabbits, stem from olderpagan traditions. Eggswere an emblem of lifeand rebirth and rabbitswere also part of the ritualwhich symbolised fertility.Baby chicks are also asymbol of new life.Early Christian churchesdid not observe Easter but it waseventually incorporated with muchcontroversy into the Christian calendar. In 325 A.D. the Roman EmperorConstantine decided that Easter shouldbe on the first full moon of the northernspring which begins with the spring

equinox on 21st March. Thus Easterbecame a mobile feast day, occurringsometime between 22nd March and 25th

April each year. For more than a thousand years beforeJesus’ birth, the pagans celebrated

spring each year. It wascelebrated as a time ofrenewal and fertility andrepresented new life andthe resurrection of natureafter the dead of winter. Thepagan goddess of springand renewal is calledOestar, a goddessworshipped by the ancient

Saxons. When Christianity arrived inEurope, it couldn’t simply impose its owntraditions onto the existing paganculture. Instead, it adopted existingtraditions as a way of integrating into theculture. The story of Christ's rebirthclosely matches pagan rituals of spring,

THE TRADITION OF EASTER.

with Jesus rising from the dead andrestoring humanity's soul after thedarkness and pain of the crucifixion.Easter festivals thus made a close fit forthe story. In today’s age of commercialisation, thereligious significance of Easter is fastlosing its relevance. People areincreasingly embracing the festiveaspect of the holiday and the longweekend offers a wonderful occasion toget together with family and friends tohave fun, feast and, in Australia, to frolicin the sun before the onset of autumnand winter.

Please contactus at the police station or alternativelycontact Crime stoppers on 1800 333000. If you want to remain anonymousthat is fine.Interesting jobs. The month kicked off with local policeattending a serious crash at theintersection of Old Coast Road andForrest Highway Lake Clifton. A smallvehicle failed to give way from the stopsign in Old Coast Road and was hit bya truck travelling north. The rescuehelicopter had to be called to conveythe occupants of the car to hospital. They are recovering from injuries.Waroona and Yarloop Police havebeen liaising with the Organised CrimeSquad over recent weeks culminatingin the harvesting of some 202 maturecannabis plants by police. These weresubsequently destroyed and 2 malesfrom Collie have been charged with anumber of related offences andremanded in custody.

On the 11th of March Police and otheremergency services attended a fire atCoronation Road and McNeal StreetWaroona. It appears that the fire wasstarted by a passing train with sparksfrom the wheels. Thankfully no-onewas hurt or houses damaged. Awonderful job done by the Firey’s again. On the 19th March Police had an “Offal”experience. At about 8.30pm thecombined Yarloop and Waroona patrolwere travelling to Waroona fromHarvey when they came across asubstantial amount of animal bits andpieces strewn across South WesternHighway. To cut a long story short, 29kilometres of offal had been pouringfrom the rear of a semi trailer boundfrom Harvey to Perth, the poor driverdid not realise anything was amiss untilthe truck deposited a 12 inch thickdeposit of offal at the fuel pump of thePlacid Ark Roadhouse. This incident caused the SouthWestern highway from Yarloop toWaroona to be closed for about 63hours and speed restrictions beingemplaced to protect motorists from thesomewhat slippery surface of the road,Unfortunately conventional methods torepair the road did not work as the spillwas predominately animal fat. Forthose of you that got flat tyres so did acouple of police cars with bonefragments being the cause. Thankfullyno-one was injured. Thanks to thosemotorists who were inconveniencedbut took it in their stride, patience is avirtue.

Consumer Protection

Termite treatments and pest control is anotable consumer issue in WesternAustralia with Consumer Protectionreceiving 225 enquiries and 16 complaintsin the past year (March 2011-February2012).Most of the problems surroundeffectiveness of the work and disputes overcontracts, so there are a numberof things you need to consider toensure your home is properlyprotected from termites.Contracts for the treatment oftermites or other pests can be fora one-off treatment. Othercontracts can be for treatmentsthat also include yearlymaintenance or routineinspections over a period of 5years or more. These routineinspections providehouseholders with aprofessional assessmentidentifying any high risk areas orinfestations. Guarantees of no termite orpest damage during these inspectionprograms are not made. The generalpractice is for the contractor to come backand treat any infestations that may occur inthis period. The important thing is toconduct inspections; either yourself, orhave a professional do the job.Consider the ongoing commitment beforesigning long term contracts with a termitetreatment of pest control business. There isnot usually any provision to cancel thesecontracts if your financial circumstanceschange.Be aware that pests are known to buildresistance to pesticide over time. They aremobile creatures therefore certainmeasures of protection will not guarantee'no termites or ants etc'; they simply reducethe risk. Whatever control method wasused when the home was built, regularphysical inspections to check for pest ortermite activity are essential. You should:

· Have regular inspections of your home, including timber decking, by qualifiedlicensed pest controllers; if possibleevery six months but if not at leastevery 12 months

· Consider using termite-resistant timberfor work on your home

· Check you home foranything that might attracttermites such as plumbing androof leaks, keep garden beds, wood piles and other objectsaway from outside walls andremove dead trees and stumpsfrom the garden as soon aspossible· Keep spaces under thefloor well ventilated

· Always get a “White AntCertificate” before buying anexisting property and make it acondition of the offer and

acceptance that the home is certifiedclear

· Consider termite barriers, eitherphysical or chemical or both, whenbuilding a home

If you would like more informationConsumer Protection has a brochure“Termites and your home” available fordownload : www.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumerprotection or you can have acopy posted out to you by calling either ofthe numbers listed below. If you require further information on this orany other consumer issue, please call intoour office on the 8th Floor of the BunburyTower, 61 Victoria Street, Bunbury, or callus on(08) 97 222 888or1300 30 40 54. (Consumer Protection is a division of theDepartment of Commerce)You can now follow us on Twitter@ConsumerWA or become a fan of ourFacebook page - Consumer Protection WA.

The Cannonball Ride was a huge success. The aim was to raise $60,000 and theyfinished closer to $75,000. The moneyraised is put towards the nurses that travelAustralia helping the families with theirchildren that have EB. Without this moneythe families have to pay themselves.

All the riders donate $1000 each as part oftheir entry fee, all support crew, vehicles, medical crew and organisers donate theirtime to this event.

Locally we raised $1389 from patrons at thepub giving their change, the hotel raised$2160, others that donate were APEErections who are contractors staying hereat the hotel from Queensland, JRMContracting Waroona, Just Cruizin Car Clubwho had a car display on the day, MandurahLions Club, Bedingfeld Ladies Auxiliary anda couple of our local ladies that raisedmoney for us were Vanessa Caruso, whomade a great effort with raising money fromher work, and Pauline Boreham whoattended our day with a stall and donatedpart proceeds.

The Debra Australia ladies who were on theride were thrilled with all the effort every onemade into making the ride and family daysuch a great success. I think it was amazingthey made the effort to ride across Australiaand to finish here in Waroona.

The ride went through some of our wettestcountry under flood to across the Nullarbor,so they saw plenty of the country. Therewere a few ‘fatalities’ including our Davewho broke his collar bone 3 days before theride finished but all arrived here in goodspirits.

Both the All Australian Car Day andBritish Auto Classic events have alwayshad something for everyone and one oftheir most popular elements hastraditionally been the “Smoke Free WA:All Day Variety Show” on the “LotterywestOutdoor Stage”Back in April 2005 when the All AustralianCar Day was held at Yarloop under thetitle “Aussie Cars in the Loop II” theTop of the Bill was the “Australian ArmyBand -Perth”.Now after seven years and a number ofattempts to have them repeat the successof that show, we are to have them returnto our Stage to top the bill once more, supported by cover band “Purple Haze”,trio “Souled Out” and all round entertainerand founding member of the Mucky DuckBush Band “Greg Hastings”.The Australian Army Band - Perth, basedat Irwin Barracks, was formed in 1949.Originally know as the WesternCommand Band, it was converted to aConcert Band in 1972. In 1993 the Bandwas transformed from a full time RegularArmy Band to an Army Reserve Band of42 Army Reserve Soldiers whose primaryrole in peace and in conflict is to performmusic.

The band’s primary roles today are toprovide musical support to the military forceremonial and training purposes and topromote the image of the Australian Armyto the wider community. The bandperforms a diverse range of musicalstyles from Concert Band and CeremonialMusic to Swing, Jazz and Rock & Roll. The Australian Army Band – Perthoccupies a prominent position in WesternAustralia. This distinguished group ofsoldier / musicians maintains a highstandard of performance at official andpublic performances in Perth andthroughout the State. The All Australian Car Day IX is on at thePinjarra Paceway on Sunday April 15th

The stage show begins at 10am with aWelcome to Country and an officialopening attended by Don Randall MPand Robyn McSweeny MLC, withpresentation of celebration trophies to theR & S Valiant and Leyland P7 OwnersClubs, M.C. Influenza, commonly known as the flu,is caused by a virus which spreadseasily from person to person throughinfected droplets in the air and byhands carrying the virus. The flu virus infects your nose, throatand sometimes your lungs. It differsfrom a cold as symptoms such asfever, sore throat and muscle achesdevelop suddenly and last about aweek. In some cases severe illnessand complications such as pneumoniaand bronchitis can develop resulting inhospitalisation and/or death. Flu canalso make some underlying medicalconditions worse.Because the flu virus is constantlychanging, it is necessary to getvaccinated every year. Each year, theflu vaccine will protect against the threestrains of flu virus which are most likelyto circulate over the winter period.Vaccination is recommended inautumn to allow time for immunity todevelop before the flu season starts.Even if you received a flu vaccinationtowards the end of the last flu season, you should still be vaccinated againbefore this flu season. The flu vaccine

does not contain any live virustherefore you cannot get flu fromreceiving the vaccine.People at high riskThe flu vaccine is recommended foreveryone from 6 months of age but isavailable free from your GP for thefollowing people at high risk:• 65 years and over• Aboriginal and Torres Strait

islander people• Pregnant women - The flu vaccine

is recommended for pregnantwomen and can be given safely.Pregnant women are at higher riskof severe complications associatedwith the flu virus. Vaccinatingagainst flu during pregnancy alsoprovides protection for the babyduring their first vulnerable monthsof life. Check with your doctor if theflu vaccine is suitable for you.

• Medically at risk - People withsome existing medical conditionsare at increased risk ofcomplications from flu. Theseinclude anyone who is over 6months of age and has heart

disease; severe asthma; chroniclung condition; chronic illnessrequiring medical follow-up orhospitalisation in the past year;diseases of the nervous system;impaired immunity; or diabetes

• Children aged 6 months to 10years and on long-term aspirintherapy are also at risk ofcomplications from flu.

Important facts• Anyone with a severe reaction to

eggs should talk to theirimmunisation provider prior toinfluenza vaccination.

• Vaccines are available from GPsurgeries, local pharmacies andother immunisation providers(check with your local Council,Community and/or AboriginalHealth Services)

Approximately 2,800 Australians dieevery year either directly from theseasonal flu, complications due to theflu, or pneumonia. Flu vaccinations arethe single most effective action inhelping fight the spread of flu in thecommunity.

The Waroona Demons Football Clubwill play home games under lights inthe 2013 Australian Rules footballseason thanks to final funding beingsecured to get lighting works underwayat the sports ground.Canning MHR Don Randall todaycongratulated the Liberal NationalState Government on granting $57,400through its Community Sporting andRecreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).He said it added to the $163,640 infederal funding that had already beensecured for the lighting infrastructureproject.“Not only will the Demons be able tohave later training sessions, but itopens up a huge range of options forother sporting and recreation groupswho wish to have an outdoor area thatis safe to train at in the evenings,” he

said. “The Demons will be able to hostnight games on home ground and thewider Waroona community will be ableto enjoy these facilities long into thefuture. I congratulate the Director ofCommunity and Planning Services atthe Shire of Waroona, Steve Cleaver, and Demons Club President, PaulAnzellino, for their commitment inassisting this project through thefunding process.”Mr Randall said the successful Howardgovernment National Community CrimePrevention (NCCP) program had beenre-badged as Safer Suburbs funding bythe Labor Government, but with NCPPdue to end in 2012-13 and SaferSuburbs funding due to cease in 2013-14, he wanted to see the Governmentcommit to keeping crime preventionfunding programs in place long term.

Local residents, business owners andgovernment representatives are beinginvited to take part in communityconsultation about a proposed windfarm near Clifton Beach. CapeBouvard Energy is undertaking aninitial stage of community consultationwith individuals living or running abusiness within a three-kilometreradius of the proposed site to informthem about the wind farm and betterunderstand their views on theproposed renewable energy project. The proposed wind farm would belocated between Clifton Beach and OldCoast Road, Clifton. The communityconsultation is part of an investigationinto the potential of the project, whichcould feature up to 36 wind turbines.Information gathered from thecommunity will be used to help informany later applications that need to be

made for relevant Local and StateGovernment approvals. Futureconsultation will also be undertakenincluding a Community Open Day.The project is expected to providesignificant environmental and economicbenefits to the region and the State ofWestern Australia, including:• Generating more than 100

Megawatts of green energy —enough to power 55,000 homes, or allthe households in the cities ofMandurah and Bunbury.

• Reducing carbon dioxide emissionsby 432,000 tonnes per year, which isequivalent to taking 98,000 cars offthe road.

• Assisting Western Australia to meetits renewable energy obligations andcontribute to the global carbonreduction initiative.

• Reducing Western Australia’sdependence on fossil fuels.

• Creating local jobs in a hightechnology industry.

The proposed wind farm would besituated on land owned by CapeBouvard Investments, an experienceddeveloper of both residential andcommercial real estate projects. Theparcel of land is currently zoned ruraland has historically been used forcropping and livestock farming. At thisstage no development application hasbeen lodged and there is no fixedtimeline for the proposed project.Residents within the consultation areawill be contacted direct by CoakesConsulting or they can contact thecompany on (08) 9226 5388 or email[email protected](.)

WAROONA

Waroona Community and the LocalDistrict continues to support the AnnualPam Corker House Annual Fete withamazing results . A new record looks likebeing set for the amount raised in fourhours with the count still going.A special thank you to Waroona LionsClub for donating the wood raffle first prizewith the raffle generating the sum of$1,236.90 with all patrons givinggenerously. The cake stall raised $1,038with again staff, volunteers, familymembers and the Waroona community allcooking their hearts out and thenreturning home with a basket full ofgoodies.Thank you to Waroona Ag Society for theloan of the marquees which helps set upthe Fete for friendly use by the public onthe front lawns and car park of PamCorker House. The Craft Stall raised thetidy sum of $588 with all the sale itemslocally crafted and donated.Last year the Fete paid for the purchaseof three designed age care lounge chairsespecially made by Atama Furniturewhich was the choice of staff. All fundsraised benefit residents who are sociallyand financially disadvantaged. A goodexample is the the provision of two dailypapers, at a cost of nearly $1, 300 perannum, for all residents to read and enjoy.Full particulars of the Fete will be providedin the May edition. It was certainly a greatopen day for everyone to contribute andenjoy.A $10,000 anonymous donation wasreceived during a morning shower onMonday 2nd April 2012. A sincere thankyou to the donor for such a specialgesture and it will make a difference.Other Pam Corker House news is that thenewly built” Grevillea Wing” for dementiaspecific and high care residents had itsfirst birthday on the 15th. After the first sixweeks it has operated at full capacitywhich demonstrates a secure wing wasbadly needed. A major qualityimprovement in the courtyard as a resultof a staff suggestion is the erection of two

shade sails which means residents cannow safely enjoy the outside environmentin comfort if they so desire. At the half yearly General Meeting,General Manager Ken Landwehr said theyhad reduced the bank debt by $717,000and the Government zero real interest loanby $224,000 with the Board ofManagement conscious of reducing thedebt at every opportunity. Unfortunately nomajor corporate support has beenforthcoming at this stage despite the factthat Quambie Park Waroona (Inc) isrecognised as a community basedcharitable organisation with publicbenevolent institution status whichprovides a golden opportunity forcorporations to be directly involved. The half yearly general meeting was heldon Tuesday 27th March to change a coupleof Constitution items including altering theAnnual General Meeting date fromSeptember to October each year to allowauditors more time to audit the books. The other major improvement in the lastmonth has been the Generator InputUpgrades so that if the power supply isbroken for any length of time Pam CorkerHouse is fully programmed to switch overto generator power for both the main hosteland the New Grevillea Wing.A public thank you to the proprietors ofWaroona Home and Hardware Centre,Mark, Barb, Mike and Donna for thedonation of a garden shed for use inassisting residents who remain active inthe garden of Pam Corker House. It iscertainly much appreciated. Please shoplocally at every opportunity and benefityour home town.Quambie Park has welcomed three newresidents, Jan Wells and Ray and MargaretHepton, to join the extended Quambie Parkfamily. We wish them a long and happystay in the Retirement Village and tosocialise in activities if they so desire aspart of their lifestyle.Bye for now and don’t eat too many EasterEggs.

Four swimmers from the WaroonaAmateur Swimming Club achievedtimes in the Top Six Overall at therecent Country PennantsCompetition held in Collie over theLabour Day long weekend. Thiswas an exceptional accomplishmentfor the small club and for HeadCoach, James Hornby. The eventcomprised thirty one teams andhundreds of swimmers. The club would like to thanksponsors, Mitchell’s Transport,DeRosa’s Highway Motors, andCharles Hull Contracting for theircontinued support of local swimmingathletes.

Local Waroona teenager Riley Middletonhas bought home a silver medal from theState Wake Boarding Titles held lastmonth. Riley has been wakeboardingfor four years and last year was chosenby his club (West Oz Wake Boarding) togo to Sydney for specialist training. Theclub is very supportive of young ridersand took an interest in Riley at thebeginning of last year when he started toshow some real natural talent out on thewater.Riley is known as a bit of an underdogwithin Wakeboarding circles as he learntto ride behind a ski boat, instead of thestandard Wake Boat which makes itmuch easier to execute tricks and jumpsprovided by the much larger wake of theboat. Despite this, and the fact that Rileyhas less opportunity to train than hiscompetitors due to Waroona Dam beingclosed most of last year while others ownleases at Bonney's Ski Park and rideevery other day, Riley braved the oddsto come home with the Silver Medal.Riley has just competed in his firstNational Competition which was held

last week at Bonney’s Ski Park inBaldivis. After meeting the stiffcompetition from the Eastern States,Riley forged ahead to get in to the lastchance qualifier. Unfortunately he didn’tmake it through to the finals but Rileypossesses a positive attitude and wasthrilled to meet all of the other riders fromaround Australia and enjoy the

experience of a National Competition. Atthirteen years old Riley has a big futureto look forward to in the sport andeagerly awaits the season starting againin September.

FOOTBALL SEASON STARTSThe Peel Football 2012 season got underway with a Grand Final replay betweenWaroona Demons and Rockingham Ramson Saturday 31st March. In a thrillerRockingham came from 23 points down atthe last break to win by four points. Bothteams had opportunities to snatch victory.Chris Wrigley a Colt’s player and son ofRockingham Coach Sean Wrigley, kickedthe winning goal under pressure. For Waroona it was a wake up call andtheir first loss in 19 games and givesCaptain Coach Craig Callaghan someammunition to work with. Both WaroonaColts and Reserves teams had strongwins over Rockingham.

Once again I have mixed comments aboutthe Men’s Pennant side. After a couple ofpoor performances the team had slippedfrom third place to fifth place with threegames to go. Four teams were incontention to fill the 3rd and 4th place andmake the finals play off. Some playersobviously had a wake up call and Waroonawon the last three games 7 points to 1 ineach game, bringing them back into the 3rd

position. This had us once again paired upwith Pinjarra in the first game of the playoffs, a team we had recently beaten by 7points to 1. However, unfortunately onceagain we fell at the last hurdle and wereeliminated from the play offs, only gaininga half point for our efforts. I would like tosay we were beaten by a better side on theday, but no team played consistently welland we were beaten by ourselves. Adisappointing end to a very mixed season, but hopefully we can look forward to betterthings next time. Next season, which startsin October, we intend having a TuesdayPennant side as well as the SaturdayTeam. The games are played in theafternoon and we will have to start off inthe lowest division. For this we will need 3teams of four, so if you are interested innominating to play, please let someoneknow at the Club. The Murray League Championships willtake place on the last two weekends inApril. On Saturday and Sunday, 21st and22nd April the Fours, the Singles and theNovices will be played at MandurahBowling Club. The following weekend, 28th

and 29th April, the Triples, the Pairs andthe Veterans will be played at PortBouvard Bowling Club. If you won any ofthese events at Club level, you can expectto be playing, so if you are unavailable onthese dates please let Mark Hiller know assoon as possible. In two weeks time on April 14th and 15th weare having our annual trip to ScarboroughSportsman’s Club. The weekend is well

worth considering. Most people travel bybus on the Saturday morning and then weplay against Scarborough in the afternoon.Dinner is then supplied by the ScarboroughClub and then after a few social drinks weretire to a motel for a few more social drinksaround the pool area. The followingmorning we return to the Club for breakfast, followed by a great game of scroungers. We return by bus in the afternoon, arrivingat the Club at about 4pm. At the point ofwriting I do not have the exact price, but Ithink it is around $145 each person twinshare. This includes the bus, all meals andthe motel accommodation. If you prefer asingle room I think it is about $35 extra.(Just ask Sharyee Hayes for the exactprices.) Anyone who is interested in bowlsand having a great social weekend isinvited to attend, including all the CorporateBowls teams. Also if you prefer not to stayovernight, you are more than welcome todrive there yourself and return on theSaturday night. Sharyee will give you aseparate price for the bowls and theevening meal. Please consider it and letSharyee know as soon as possible. Thewhole weekend is designed for fun anddon’t worry if you don’t consider yourself agood bowler, nobody cares. A few ladiesaccompany their partners on the bus, butgo shopping in Perth instead of bowling. This is also acceptable and helps to pay forthe bus.The final bowling news is about Anzac Day.As usual the Club will be open straight afterthe Anzac Ceremony and if you want toplay bowls, your names need to be in by1pm. This is an annual competitionbetween the RSL and the Bowling Club. There will be a list on the noticeboard andyou can nominate prior to the day for theteam you wish to play for. Names may thenbe moved around if one team is short ofplayers. It will cost you $7 to play bowls andwe usually run a raffle. Sandwiches will beprovided after the bowls. All proceeds fromthe green fees and the raffle will bedonated to Legacy. In addition to bowls we

will once again run a two up game afterthe bowls, if there is enough interest. Socome along and have a great afternoonand help to raise some funds for legacy. The Jag the Joker prize money is now upto $3,900 on a Friday. The meals are stillthe best in town. So why not come alongand socialize with other members. Bowlshas finished, but watching the ‘Footie’ onthe big screen is unbelievableFinally we have a winner for the Jim BeamRaffle. This was drawn on the last day ofCorporate Bowls. Terry Clark’s name wasdrawn out of the box by Terry herself, butshe asked for it to be re-drawn and one ofAlf Court’s tickets came out. Thanks toeveryone for purchasing tickets.
