NULSENHi everyone. We at Nulsen had alovely birthday (54th) last month. Wehad 30 people from Head Office comedown and join us. If you areinterested please ring me. This eventis always enjoyable, we will keep youposted. All for now.Jan Wood (Secretary) 9733 3701

A THANK YOUOn behalf of one of our valuedQuambie Park residents would youplease express a public thank you.Sometimes it’s amazing what adifference a phone call from ourFederal Member for Canning can make. All our Senior Citizens aged over 85understand the need for a medical andthen wait for a booking to take the test.In the meantime technically theirdriver’s licence may expire plus alsotheir independence.A waiting period of 2.5/to 3 months wasreduced to 3 days thanks to DonRandall.Hopefully more driving instructors willbe readily available in the future. Our 98 year old resident wishes to saythank you Don and in doing so has alsoassisted all other drivers in reducing thewaiting time.
CORAL’S CHARITYKNITTERS.
It’s good to see somany ladies at our
knitting group. Squares are stillpouring in from our 89 year old ladyin St James. Joy and Lil are busysewing them together for me and Istill have some at home. I haven’tbeen home much myself with takingmy husband to appointments inPerth after his three by-passes. Iwill have to learn that song “On TheRoad Again”.Thank you to Nola H for anotherlovely rug. Lil puts it together andfinishes with a crotchet edge. Some ladies are doing their ownthing at the moment while we havea breather. We have a bag ofjumpers, beanies and a few toys forthe Royal Flying Doctor Service.Bev was away for a craft week atDongara with her patchwork ladies, together with Dongara CWA. Shehas learnt a new knitting patternand will show us how it is done.I have been busy knitting beaniesfor Peel Hospital; 50 so far. Got alot done while visiting my husbandat the Mount Hospital. We are hoping to have a lady fromPat Thomas House Women’sDomestic Violence services to beour special guest speaker at theend of September. She will leavepamphlets at the library.Dates for September are Thursday6th and 20th.

WAROONA BOOKCLUB.
Last month we readScandinavian writers who
have recently become better knownand accepted, in particular since StiegLarssan’s trilogy of The Girl with theDragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Playedwith Fire and The Girl Who Kicked theHornet’s Nest.Although some details are obviouslyof the Norwegian culture andlandscape, the issues treated are of auniversal nature with writers such asJo Nesbo and Mankell aiming beyonda domestic public to an increasinglywider readership. Some members found some of thecharacters can be considered dull anddepressive, even antisocial andisolated from family members, as isDetective Wollander who features inmany murder mysteries. Severalmembers felt something may be lostin translation and it may take readingtwo or three novels of the author to getthe ‘feel’ of his writing. This month we are reading KatieFlynn who has written of life intwentieth century Liverpool, focusingon family relationships during the upsand downs of life, which many of ushave also experienced.
WRITER’S CORNERJeanette Hornby’s latest release‘Candy’s Man’, a sexy romance novel,is now available as an ebook andpaperback. Please see her website fordetails www.jeanettehornby.com.auYou may send Jeanette an email at[email protected] or ring on0417 957 604.Feel free to visit Jeanette’s Blog forbook excerpts, posts and so muchmorejeanettehornbybooks.blogspot.com.au

The Annual GeneralMeeting of the WaroonaHistorical Society Inc.
was held on Thursday 12th July with allexecutive committee membersreturned unopposed. President –Debra Tyler, Vice President & Historian– Glenece Walmsley, Secretary/Treasurer – Maree Ellis. We welcome Bill Rafferty to thecommittee as a returning member aftersome time. Bill is a font of localknowledge, having lived in, beeninvolved with and supported localgroups in the district all his life. Glad tohave you as a member, Bill.Three members attended the PeelChapter meeting of Museums Australiaat Serpentine recently. All museumcommittees are being asked toconsider preparing disasterpreparedness plans and consider ways
WAROONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS
of assisting other museums in the areaif a disaster should happen to theircollection. Waroona has experienceddisaster in the past, with the loss of theDrakesbrook School building and somerare collection items in a fire in July 2005.Another group of younger students fromSt Joseph’s School visited the HistoricalSociety Museum to obtain additionalinformation for their QR Codes project.Fact sheets on the various sites ofinterest around the district are being
created by the students and will beedited, ready for the QR project launch. Finally our members have decided topresent a display of some of thecollection and photographs we hold, inthe Waroona Memorial Hall on the day ofthe Vintage Machinery Day on 9September, so look out for our displayand a very bright costume. The Museumbuilding will not be open on the day, however if you have a special request toaccess the museum, we will be happy tooblige. See you all there.
DRAKESBROOK DESPATCH(INC) AGM
The Annual General Meeting of theDrakesbrook Despatch was held lastMonday with twelve memberspresent. All office bearers retained their postswith the exception of our Secretary,Alice Handley. Alice has been asuper efficient Secretary and will besadly missed.Financially the Despatch is in ahealthy position and makes a smallprofit each year. This has enabled usto continue to provide a freenewsletter for the community and toavoid raising the price of advertising. The Despatch thanks all itsadvertisers and contributors for theircontinued support.

IN MEMORIAMOn the loss of our dear Siamese
Seal Point cat - Bella. We give no thanks to the HOON/Swho killed her by hitting her with theircar, on the week-end of 29/30 July,in Hill Street, didn't stop and left herto die. Letter to the Editor:What were the Waroona ShireCouncillors thinking of to have refusepickup in the same week of judging ofTidy Towns? They have meetingseach month; surely they discuss whatis happening at least a month ahead. At this rate Waroona will never get anaward for being a tidy town. Why can’tthe annual refuse pickup be at the endof autumn, beginning of winter? Can we not have garden waste pickupas well? Not everyone has a trailer. Ido compost my lawn cuttings andleaves in a compost bin with foodscraps and a small mulcher, but whatdoes one do if they have large items?I have noticed a lot of rubbish on thehighway. I would like to see people/families adopt a section of the highwayand it be their responsibility to keep itrubbish free. If a small town likeYarloop can keep their town tidy andwin awards, surely Waroona can.Junk papers are a problem. If they arestill on the lawns why throw more out.Can a sign be put up to say “No JunkPapers” like we do for junk mail?Come on Waroona. Let’s get our actinto gear and have our town tidy fornext year.

A local resident is singing the praisesof our recreation centre. She makesuse of the swimming pool on a dailybasis and over the months her walkingand balance have improved – she hasa neurological disease – and she hasthe added bonus of weight loss. Thetemperature of the pool is set at 28degrees, which is standard for indoorswimming pools, and she is concernedthat were the temperature to beincreased her and others with similarconditions, would find it too hot to use.She is extremely grateful that we havesuch a facility in our town and wantsresidents to know of the healthbenefits she has experienced.

OLYMPIC HYPE.Many people around Australia werestunned and became insecure aboutAustralia’s place in the world. Sportdoes not define a country. Whathappened is the new Olympic reality.Fifty countries now have competitivesports institutes. By 2016 seventycountries will have competitive sportsinstitutes. The 62 million Brits haveflexed their muscles. Brazil with 200million people, Spain 48 million, SouthKorea 48 million, the Ukraine 45 millionand Poland 38 million all want to be inthe top ten. India’s 12.2 billion will soonstart to assert itself, as will Argentina.Small countries are powerful in certainsports. Why did our athletes not get more goldmedals? (a) Competition in 2012 wastougher than ever before, (b) everyonein Australia and the media put enormouspressure on our athletes and (c)Australia, with 23 million people, hasonly so much talent available. In the past four years the AustralianState and Federal governments havespent 500 million dollars on institutebuilding and upkeep, new equipment, overseas travel for coaches andathletes, money to import foreignathletes coaches, sports psychologists, massage people, etc. We even have amassive sport institute in Italy. Will spending 700 million dollars in thenext four years help gain medals? No, itwill not. Will an investigation intoswimming help? No, it will not. TheAmericans, the Chinese and numerousother countries want gold in swimming.Look at France.Have our athletes let down Australia? They have not. Should they improvetheir work ethic? They work too hardalready. They take everything tooseriously. Next issue: Athlete happiness.

This month at Waroona VetsThanks to Pfizer we can bring you a great deal on
Heartworm testing for the first twenty takers:• Heartworm test (with other consult,
vaccination or surgical procedure): $25• Heartworm test only: $45A Heartworm test involves taking a small sample of yourpet’s blood. Results are available in only 10 minutes.*These prices are valid for the first 20 takers only for themonth of September
Snakes will begin to be active at this time ofyear, so it pays to be aware of the signs ofsnakebite which can include:
·Agitation or collapse·Sudden weakness – especially in the hind legs·Sudden vomiting, urination or defecation·Seizures·Dilated pupils·Excessive salivation or frothing at the mouth·Difficulty breathing and paralysis
These signs may initially subside (your petlooks like it is getting better) before a rapidparalysis starting from the back end of theanimal develops, followed quickly by death. If your pet is rapidly becoming paralysedimmediate veterinary attention should besought.Call your vet first so they caninform you if they can deal with youremergency or direct you elsewhere. If yourpet has definitely killed the snake, bringit with you because it allows identificationof the snake as a Tiger or Dugite. This isimportant because animals can recoverdifferently depending on what snake it wasand it allows vets to use the most costeffective antivenin for your animal. Handlethe dead snake by the tail with extremecaution (avoid the head) and do not allowchildren to handle the snake under anycircumstances. Due to the costs of antiveninand supportive treatment, not all owners canafford to get their pet treated.Consider petinsurance now as it can be the differencebetween life and death for your pet.
HeartwormHeartworms are a parasite that istransmitted by mosquitoes from an infectedanimal to your pet. Heartworm is the mostserious of all the worms, and intestinal allwormer tablets do not prevent heartworminfection. Heartworm is deadly but easilypreventable.
An animal is infected when an infectedmosquito bites your pet, and injects a larvalstage of the worm under the skin. This larvalstage develops in their tissues for 5-6months before becoming an adult worm inyour pet’s heart and pulmonary bloodvessels. These adult worms then mate andproduce microfilaria (juvenile heartworm)which is drawn up by a mosquito when itfeeds on your pet. This infected mosquitothen transmits the worm to other pets.
The worms physically interfere with theaction of the heart valves meaning that theheart has to work much harder in order topump blood and starts to become enlargedand dilated. There are often clinical signs ofheart disease or heart failure such as:
·Lethargy· tiring easily with exercise·coughing· loss of appetite·enlarged abdomen
Diagnosis: If your pet has never hadheartworm prevention, you can have your
pet’s blood tested to see if it is carrying thisdeadly parasite by a simple blood test, which only takes 10 minutes to process.
Treatment: Heartworm can be treated, butit carries risks for your dog and there are noguarantees of success. Your dog may needa series of arsenic-based injections or evensurgery to remove the adult worms fromtheir heart. As with most of these sorts ofthings, prevention is better than cure.
Prevention: There are many options forprevention ranging from monthly tablets orchews, spot ons (such as Advocate,Revolution) or yearly injections. Speak toyour vet about the best prevention for yourpet or visit www.pawclub.com.au for moreinformation.

The Waroona Districts Chamber ofCommerce hosted the inauguralWaroona Annual Business Awardsevent on Tuesday 21st August. Thechamber was re-formed almost 2 yearsago in response to a long decline in theretail activity within the town.In the past six months the chamberbegan to hold monthly Open HouseMeetings, where anyone was welcometo attend, whether or not they were amember, or even a business owner. AShop Local campaign was introduced;working with several of the town’s manynot-for-profit associations to spread themessage of supporting localbusinesses, in return for donations fromthe businesses whenever a LocalShopper card is stamped. The Business Awards event conceptwas to recognise those businesses thatperformed the best across sixcategories. Voting was open to anyoneto vote for any business. Voting boxeswere placed in 20 shops throughout thetown, and an online voting page wasdeveloped for the event, and promoted
through Facebook. A total of864 votes were receivedacross the six categories. The awards were presentedon the night byrepresentatives from theShire of Waroona, the PeelChamber of Commerce andIndustry, and the Peel SmallBusiness Centre. The Business Awards eventwas a very enjoyable night forall that attended. There was avery positive vibe throughoutthe night, it provided a greatopportunity for localbusiness owners to networktogether, and it just goes to

It seems computer screens arereplacing shop windows for manyAustralians. A recent online shoppingreport estimated a $16 billion dollarspend by Aussie internet shoppers in2012, with almost half that money goingto overseas retailers.Let’s face it buying things at the click ofa mouse and having your goodsdelivered is pretty handy and you canoften net a bargain. But if you can’tactually touch what you’re buying, orsee the person or business you’redealing with how can you be sure whatyou’re getting, that it’s value for moneyand that you’ll be protected ifsomething goes wrong? Here are some things to consider…
·The internet might open up thewhole world to you but rememberAustralian consumer protection lawscan generally only help if you buyfrom an Australian business. Checkthe seller’s policy on returns, refunds, shipping, insurance, warranties etc.
·Try to use reputable, well-knownretail websites. If they’re a smalleronline seller, look for a phonenumber and physical address andcall them if you have any questionsor feel unsure. If you use an onlineretailer based in this country look foran Australian Business Number(ABN) – you can verify it atwww.abr.business.gov.au. For bothAustralian and overseas onlinesellers look up their name using yoursearch engine to see what reviews/blog posts come up.
·Check whether the site is secure –does it say httpsat the start of theweb address or is there a padlock
symbol on the page? Just because asite looks professional doesn’t meanit’s legitimate – it’s cheap and easyto make a good looking website.
·Shop around to compare prices andwhat you’re getting for your money.Remember to include shippingcharges and any taxes in the totaland convert the amount if the priceshown is not Australian dollars (there
are plenty of free convertors online).·When looking at images remember
that the camera angle or digitaleffects can distort your perception ofthe quality of the goods.
·When you place an order, confirmthe timeframe for delivery or ifpossible a set date. Take the optionof printing the tax invoice/receipt ifoffered. Press the Control and PrintScreen buttons on your keyboard totake a screenshot if not. Keep thetransaction record in a safe place.
·Think about using a secure paymentsystem. These payment providersact between you and the seller, offering protection when you pay andscreening your financial details fromthe seller. You could also considerhaving a credit card just for internet
shopping with a lower limit than yourusual credit card. You can even dopre-paid credit cards now to controlthe amount on them.
·Try not to send money by ‘wiretransfer’. Scammers use wiretransfer services to get money fastand once it’s been collected youcan’t get it back.
You can find extra tips atwww.moneysmart.com.au and learnmore about scams viawww.scamnet.wa.gov.au.

COMING SHOW SEASON WILLBE CHILD’S PLAY
Nationals South West MLC Colin Holt haswelcomed the announcement thatchildren 12 and under will be allowed toenter their local agricultural show for free. The State Government has committed $2million to ensuring free entry to allagricultural shows for younger children, when accompanied by an adult. Thecommitment aims to draw greaterrecognition that 2012 is the year of thefarmer. There are over 60 agricultural shows inregional WA each year. Thisannouncement will go a long way toensuring these community driven eventscontinue to prosper and remain highlyrelevant with the next generation.Mr Holt was confident this announcementwould be welcomed by regional familiesand would teach the younger generationthe importance of the agricultural sector.“Show day is pencilled in to mostcalendars every year. This announcementwill help ease the hip pocket pain ofregional families on show day” “Regional Agricultural Shows are vital inhighlighting the value of the WAagriculture sector. The agricultural show isa great family day out which helps peopleof all ages better understand thecontribution of the agricultural sector toour local community,” said Mr Holt.“This coming show season is a greatopportunity for young people to learn moreabout the fresh, quality food produced inthis State and the great careeropportunities in agriculture.”For more information please contact Hon.Colin Holt MLC on 0418902204 or email[email protected]

Asthma is a chronic respiratorycondition that affects 1 in 10Australians, is the number one reasonfor hospitalisation amongst children andis the main cause for work and schoolabsenteeism. Asthma does not need tohold you back from enjoying life.Although there is currently no cure, withproper management it can be controlledand the impact reduced, which meansthat you and your family can enjoy anormal, active and healthy lifestyle. The best way to keep your conditionunder control is by visiting your GP andgetting an Asthma Action Plan. TheAsthma Action Plan will help you tomonitor you or your child’s asthmasymptoms, triggers and progress andhelp you to understand the conditionbetter.Don’t let asthma hold youback. Download your Asthma Action Planfrom www.controllingasthma.org.au andbook an appointment with your GP.
Asthma TriggersIt is important to remember thateveryone’s asthma triggers are differentand can change over time. Factors
NATIONAL ASTHMA WEEK 1ST – 7TH SEPTEMBER 2012
such as smoke, colds/flus and exerciseand even a change of season aresome of the more common triggers.Below is a list of common triggers forasthma.
• Air Pollution• Exercise• Influenza• Food Additives• Allergies• Cigarette Smoke• Cold Air (Winter)• Workplace Triggers• Environmental Smoke• Dust Mites• Pollen (Spring)• Pets
Asthma SymptomsLike triggers, each individual’ssymptoms can vary and can alsochange over time. It is important toremember that if you are unsure aboutwhether or not your symptoms couldbe asthma, you should go straight toyour GP.The most common asthma symptomsare:• Shortness of breath
• Wheeze • Chest tightness, and/or a dry,
irritating and continual cough(especially at night/early in themorning, or with exercise oractivity). These symptoms arecaused by the narrowing of theairways. If your asthma is wellcontrolled you should only haveoccasional asthma symptoms likethese. You do not have to have allof these symptoms to be diagnosedwith asthma.
It’s important to monitor your asthma bybeing aware and acknowledging if yoursymptoms are getting worse. Somepeople will also regularly measure theirpeak flow. Your written Asthma ActionPlan prepared in partnership with yourdoctor is a helpful reference for you toknow how to respond if your asthma isgetting worse.Note: The Asthma Action Plan outlineswhat medication to take every daywhen you are feeling well, what to dowhen unwell and what to do when yourasthma is worse.

Waroona Football Club League Squadcontinued its strong finish to season2012 with an 87 point demolition ofSouth Mandurah in the qualifying finalat Waroona Oval last Sunday. Theywill now line up against arch rivalsRockingham at Anniversary Park in the2nd semi final this week. WaroonaDemons beat Rockingham Rams by 10goals in the last qualifying game just aweek ago to hand their opponents theirfirst defeat for the year.Waroona are keen to defend theirPremiership title and a win this weekwould guarantee them their fourthsuccessive grand final appearanceafter a 20 year drought. Club PresidentDeb Clancy is delighted that all threegrades secured wins to progress to thesecond semi-final. Not bad for a smallcountry town with a population base ofjust over 4000 people versus muchlarger towns like Mandurah andRockingham. Club historians cannotremember the last time all teamscompeted in the second week of thefinals fixtures on the same day with anequal ranking for the right to participatein the 2012 grand final. The midfield of Ben Wright, CourtneyLakay and Dean Taylor is workingovertime and keeping the ballconstantly in attack. Full forward Alan“Foxy” Wilson is averaging four goalsper match and kicked six last weekendand handed off several others. JustinGiumelli is another livewire smallforward, even though he did not havehis kicking boots on with only 4 goalsfrom 10 scoring shots. Ben Mathews-Herald runs all day and creates spaceand another lively forward is Joel“Fishy” Catalano who celebrated his21st birthday last weekend in the
Memorial Hall. Ruckman Steele Courtis equal to any other in the Leagueand is supported by Matt Atchesonand Colts Captain Clay Smith whenrequired plus Ayden Crooke.Waroona have the best percentage inthe League and that is due to thedefensive unit being fixed and focusedin the last 18 games. Ryan McKinleyand Ryan Court hold down the keypositions at centre half back andfullback respectively and Chad Peters,Tom Carroll, Troy Purser and RhysBloxsidge the sweeping quarterback.Other young players like MitchDawson and Jayden Derosa havegreatly improved alongside Reserveregulars Grant Coxon and LindsayWilson who have spent more time inthe League Squad. With several players still to return, likeMatt Thomas who received a brokenjaw during the National CountryFootball Championships, the fight forfinal selection in the squad of 22 is on.Life member John Mason presentedSteele Court, Rhys Bloxsidge andCourtney Lakay with their 150 gamecups and they now qualify for theopportunity to be considered for LifeMembership. In a rousing speechMason gave the history of all playersand why they are part of the team thathas played together as a unit for thepast decade. The Colts Squad, and the talent intheir team will ensure WaroonaLeague squad remains as the mosthated team in the League and showswhy clubs are jealous of the victoryrate of Waroona over the past fouryears, just dropping five games duringthat time.

Colin was playing in a group of threewith Jeff Taylor and Life MemberAlan Jeffery.Colin’s golf play is slightlyunconventional but obviouslyeffective, using his driver on all thecourse Par 3 holes.Alan and Jeff’s described the shot:“that it never looked like missing fromthe moment the ball left the club face.”The ball bounced onto the green androlled into the hole for his first hole in

Waroona League CaptainAdam Clancy resuming from injuryshowed his class in the second termplaying a key forward role. Other goodplayers were Centreman MaxGardiner,r oving forward Alfie Angi andRuckman Dean Shore. Jayden Caratti gave abest-on-ground performance at centrehalf forward and was well supported byRussell Shore and Jacob Didio in themidfield. Captain Clay Smith leadingthe ruck was another good performerand Eli Smith burrowed into the packs.
Jake Wilson on a wing,Kohen HartColes in the forward line and Damienyoung in defence rounded off a verygood performance. FS: Waroona 15-8(98) def Rockingham 9-5 (59)

September is going to be a busy month atthe Bowling Club. The first event of our newseason is always the Waroona LadiesInvitation Day on Friday 7th September. Asusual, weather permitting, this promises tobe another great day for the ladies and allhands are required on deck for the day. Ifyou are around the Club prior to that dateplease give a hand in tidying up the area. Our actual start of the season is the MixedOpen Day on the following Sunday 9th
September starting at 1pm. The format forthe afternoon will depend on the numbers ofmembers present, which again may bedetermined by the weather. Whites areessential to play and if everyone brings aplate of food we can enjoy afternoon teatogether.
Monday 17th September sees us hostinganother Coaching Clinic. A number ofpeople have already nominated for this, butthere is still room for many more. It doesn’tmatter if you are a new bowler or a seasonedplayer, I am sure you could benefit from this. The Clinic starts at 10am and finishes at3pm. Obviously there will be a lunch break, but since this hasn’t been mentioned, Iguess it will be bring your own lunch. Two days later on Wednesday September19th is the start of the new Corporate Bowlsseason. If you haven’t received a nominationform through the mail and wish to nominatea team, please see the bar staff at the Club,or telephone Sharyee Hayes on 9733 5361.The first competition will go through toDecember 12th and then a new competitionwill begin in the New Year. Corporate Bowlsis a great fun night. It costs $10 per personto play, but that includes your evening meal. The Bowling Club is hosting another DartsCompetition this September. This time it isonly a one day carnival, the Spring MixedFours. That means there has to be at leastone male and one female in each team. Inthe past this competition has been a greatsuccess with up to 80 players competing.Unfortunately there are other competitionson the same day, so the numbers will be
down a little. There still seems to be someconfusion over these darts competitions, but as usual Wally and June Maughan willbe organizing it on behalf of the BowlingClub. It brings in some much neededrevenue to the Club and has nothing to dowith the local darts association. Volunteerswill once again be needed to work behindthe bar and in the kitchen, so please if youhave some free time on that day, put yourname down on the roster. The Alcoa Men’s Open Fours this year isagain a two day carnival on Wednesday andThursday, 26th /27th September. Sixthousand dollars prize money is up forgrabs and it would be nice for local teams towin some of that. A lot of volunteers will berequired on the day, so if you are notinterested in playing, please offer yourservices at the Club and I am sure you willbe most welcome. This year we have decided to have a bigday at the Club for the AFL Grand Final. Asyou all know this is on Saturday 29th
September and the Club will be open from9.30am onwards. Apart from watching thegame on the large TV there will be lots of funon the day with raffles and tippingcompetitions. Food will be available all dayfrom a Hot Dog and Pie Stand and for a bitof atmosphere we are asking everyone tocome dressed in the Club Colours of theirchoice. The beer will be flowing; the pies willbe Jesters; the hot dogs hot, so come alongand enjoy the game.Friday night bowls is always popular andthis year it starts on Friday, 26th October.Names need to be in by 6.30pm, so pleaseif you are running late ring through to theClub and get your name down. Everyone isusually out on the green by 7.45pm and thegames finish by 9pm. It is all low key andfun, so even if you haven’t played beforecome along and have a go.Finally the Committee decided to raise allGreen Fees for all events to $8.00. Youhave been pre-warned, so please don’tcomplain to the person collecting the money.
