OCTOBER RAINFALLTotal rainfall recorded to date is37.0mm over 10 wet days with thegreatest fall being 14.8mm on 22October. This brings our annualtotal to 716.2mm.Highest rainfall recorded in Octoberwas 132.4 in 1989, whilst the lowestwas 2.8 in 1969.With only two months to go it looksas though 2012 will be anotherbelow average year mainly causedby an extremely dry July.

THE BUTTERFLY.Hovering above the flowers and pollentreesIn the warmth of the sun and gentlebreezeThe winter gone they arrive in springThey have their fun while on wingTheir twist and turns, and fun andgamesSadly their strength begins to wainTheir beautiful colours begin to fadeTheir duty done, their eggs are laidAll this has gone for our butterflyThey gave us pleasure and then theydie.Bert Spooner.

Father Robert celebrated his lastmass as parish priest of Waroona on28th October. Lucy Anzellino,Chairperson of the WaroonaCatholic Parish community delivereda brief farewell speech.“On behalf of the parish communitythank you for being our parish priest, mentor and guide over the pastseven years. We were fortunate wehad you for an extra twelve months.Your Gospel reflection andfellowship has been inspiring andbrought people back to our SundayMass. We have been privileged and proudof your music and songs. They areunique and very special to our parishand will continue to be played at ourSunday Mass and specialcelebrations.

DRAKESBROOK WEIR APERFECT SETTING FOR A

FAREWELLCongratulations to Waroona Shire forthe wonderful improvements atDrakesbrook Weir for all to enjoy.Had the privilege of saying farewell to alocal identity John “Tubby” Tomlinsonwith family and friends in a beautifulsetting the other Friday. It was the first in memory in the historyof the local weir which has enduredmany changes over the years.A beautiful family venue for Carol andher boys to say farewell to her belovedhusband John and father andgrandfather.Picture perfect.

I wish to thank our local ranger andothers that are involved in caring for themany abandoned dogs that have beenneglected and cast aside for somereason or another. It must be heartbreaking for these caring people to beconstantly picking up these animals andtrying to find them loving homes.Like many, I’ve always overlookedgetting a dog from the shelter and havechosen to spend money by getting acertain breed etc. However, I nowrealize that some of the best dogs wecould hope for are locked away, patientlywaiting for a kind owner to adopt theminto their family.Just recently I became a carer for one ofthese dogs and brought her into ourhome on a trial basis, within a few days Icame to the conclusion that this dog that

70th Anniversary ReunionSt Joseph's School will be celebrating its70th Anniversary

on Sunday 17 March 2013in the school grounds.

The day will commence with an outdoor Mass concelebrated by theVicar General of Bunbury, and past student, Father Tony Chiera at10am.

This will be followed by morning tea, the unearthing of the 1985 timecapsule and the laying of a new time capsule. This will be followed bylunch and stalls for the whole family to find a bargain or to enjoythemselves. The day will conclude at 3pm.

We would love to see you there!!

Lorraine with her adopted dog

had been abandoned was now definitelygoing to be part of our family and wecould not wish for a better companion. She is older, very well behaved, getsalong with our cat and has won myhusband over completely. We lookforward to sharing many years with heras she has brought us so much pleasurealready in just the short time that we’vehad her.So if you’re looking to care for a dog ona permanent basis and are willing toshow it the love it deserves, Irecommend that you contact our localranger before you visit the pet shops asshe will give you all the advice that youneed. Thanks for all you’ve done.

Lorraine & Ken.

THANK YOU TO RANGER SERVICES

The Open House heldin October was a great

opportunity to meet together. Witheveryone being so busy running theirbusiness, it was great to see peoplemaking the effort to be involved. One thing that we discussed was theneed to bring everyone together, to geteveryone on the same page andworking for the common goal ofsecuring the future of local businesses. We were then presented with anenlightening seminar on onlinemarketing. The purpose, method, and

results of effective online marketing isnot all about selling your productsonline, but rather creating an onlinepresence to support your business. Asthe internet continues to be an integralpart of our daily lives, it makes sense toharness the power of an onlinepresence to work to your advantage. Our sincere thanks go to Patrick ofTempleman Twells Web Design forpresenting this seminar. The November Open House meetingwill be held at Templeman Twells WebDesign, 22 Fouracre Street, onWednesday 14th November at 10:00am(no evening meeting this month). Weencourage ALL business owners to joinus, that we may work together for thiscommon goal.

WAROONACHAMBER OFCOMMERCE

To the Editor:Waroona Tidy Towns Group, thank youfor your answers to my questions. Ithas only taken 5 years as my first letterpublished on this topic was in October2007, followed by many others.Another question is what is theCertificate in the Library for? It doesn’texplain. I think it should go toDrakesbrook Antiques as they have anice tidy shop front and beautifulgardens. When I was a girl all shop keeperswashed their windows and swept outthe front every morning for 6 days of theweek and there wasn’t any rubbisharound. What has happened in thepast 60 years? People are too lazy orthey think someone else will pick up.Finally what about public rubbish bins? Why are there 3 sets in one area of thehighway and none in others?

Recent visitors to the HistoricalSociety were Adrian and SuzanneTaylor from Shanghai, seekinginformation of their great-uncle WilliamBarnes who arrived in Waroona in1923 and passed away in 1946 atPinjarra Hospital.

William’s sister still lives in Englandand the only information they had everreceived about him was from a MrsDaisy Berry who wrote and informedher of his death.

We were able to find several items forthem to enable them to tell their great-auntie of his time in Waroona. The Waroona Historical Societyacknowledges its appreciation to theShire of Waroona for their support viathe Community Development Grant toenable our organisation to add to thecollection of oral histories frommembers of the Waroona community. The Society has been successful in itsapplication for a grant to purchase adigital oral history recording unit.Previous recordings conducted morethan 15 years ago with a mini taperecorder have been transferred todisks and this grant will enable thesociety to record, edit and save morestories - all in digital format. We will be seeking the support frommembers of our community who wouldlike to be involved in beinginterviewed, interviewing ortranscribing in the near future. Pleasecontact Debra Tyler on 041 770 5966if you would like to be involved in thisproject.

Lately we have seen a few dogs in theclinic with aural haematomas. They tendto be more common in the warmermonths but can occur at any time. What is an aural haematoma? An auralhaematoma is simply a blood clot in theear flap (pinna) of your pet. This formswhen a blood vessel in the ear rupturesand the blood collects between thecartilage and skin of the earflap. Becauseof the anatomy of the ear, there isnowhere for this blood to go so the eargets painfully swollen. The ear may hangat an unusual angle and your pet oftenhas a head tilt to the side of the affectedear.Causes:An aural haematoma can becaused by any headshaking or scratchingof the ears. Repeated shaking orscratching can cause the blood vessels inthe ear to rupture and bleed into thespace between the ear cartilage and theskin of the ear flap. We commonly seeaural haematomas this time of year aspets are often irritated by flies and fly bitesto the ears, so they shake their head. They can also often occur as a responseto the irritation caused by an ear infection, ear mite infestation, or a foreign body inthe ear canal such as a grass seed. Theyare also common in dogs that have anunderlying allergy (especially food

allergies) as the ears get irritated and thedog scratches or shakes repeatedly.Often treatment requires you to find theunderlying cause to prevent recurrence.Treatment:In nearly all cases, auralhaematomas have to be treatedsurgically. This involves making anincision to remove the blood clot or anumber of smaller holes to drain bloodfrom the ear. Sutures are then passedthrough the ear flap to prevent thehaematoma reforming, and encouragethe reattachment of the ear cartilage tothe skin. By doing surgery we hope toretain the natural appearance of the earas far as possible. Any underlying eardisease or foreign body must beremoved and treated at this time.If left untreated, the haematoma mayeventually resolve by itself over a periodof weeks. It is uncomfortable as scarringwill take place and the ear is likely to bepermanently misshapen (known as‘cauliflower ear’). As the underlyingreason for the haematoma is notaddressed, this will lead to further traumaand damage to the earas well asconsiderable pain for your pet.Permethrin ToxicityBeing the time of year for increased fleaactivity, it is worth being aware ofdogproducts which are dangerous to your

cat. Using dog-branded products on catscan be deadly. Many dog brandedshampoos, flea sprays and supermarketspot on flea treatments can be deadlywhen intentionally or accidentally usedon cats. These products usually containpermethrin, which is deadly to cats.Exposure can be as simple as a dog thatis wet with a product brushing thesubstance onto the cat as it walks past. Also always check the products are safefor cats before using them. Signs ofpermethrin toxicity include excessivesalivation, frothing, agitation, muscletremors, seizures, collapse and eventualcoma. Get your cat treatment as quicklyas possible. We recently saw akangarooaffected in the same way, so alwayscheck with your local vet before using anyproduct for a species it is not labelled for.

Collecting and recording rainfall is asatisfying task which occupies aminimum of time. All it involves isreading the rain gauge at 9am daily, recording the results and forwardingthem to the Bureau of Meteorology andsending a monthly return.

The placing of the rain gauge is of primeimportance. There should be noobstacles that prevent rain from beingcollected in the gauge. i.e. nooverhanging tree branches etc.

We aim to have no obstructions to thewind flow above a slope of 1:4 i.e. forevery four metres across the ground theobstacles should be no taller than ametre. So after 12 metres across theground the obstacles should be no tallerthan three metres. This is particularlyimportant if any obstructions to the windflow are clustered on one side of the raingauge. If the obstructions are uniformlydistributed around the rain gauge anobstruction free slope of 1:2 can betolerated. Wire mesh fences can beconsidered to not present an obstructionto the wind flow. These obstruction free ‘zones’ aremeasured from the top of the rain gaugewhich is itself to be 300mm aboveground level.Ideally the rain gauge will besurrounded by soil with naturalvegetation. i.e. we try to avoidpositioning rain gauges on concrete orother heat absorbing surfaces.Sometimes it is necessary to makecompromises to these guidelines. Please call 9733 2720 if you areinterested in performing this valuabletask.

To the Editor:I was invited to the Visitor’s Centre forthe opening of the annual Sea to ArtExhibition. It amazes me each yearlooking at the fabulous worksexhibited, how talented our smalltowns are. The new lighting improvedthe display no end. It was a greatevening with lovely home-madenibbles to sustain us.If it were not for Tracy and her helpersthis would not be possible. They dowork very hard. You know you need to lose weight, andyou’re ready to get started, but not quitesure just how to?The first stop should be your doctor, particularly if you are very overweight. It’s also a good idea to get some basichealth checks (for example, heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, bloodsugar levels) to make sure that youdon’t have any underlying healthissues. Make sure that you have thesechecks once you begin to lose weightas improved results can be a greatmotivator for further weight loss.Research has shown that the mostsuccessful weight loss programs arethose that involve lifestyle changes,

promote eating across all food groups, and promise steady results. Byfollowing a healthy weight loss programyou can expect to lose between halfand one kilogram per week. If aprogram promises that you will losemore than this, it is likely that the weightlost will be fluid and lean muscle tissue, not fat. It is also likely that the programis not possible to follow long-term.We begin to lose weight when wecreate an energy deficit. That meanswe need to burn more energy(kilojoules) than we consume. This iswhere exercise comes into play. Notonly will it speed up your weight lossbut it will help you tone up and feel

positive about the changes you aremaking. Start out slowly and aim tobuild up to 30 minutes of moderateactivity for at least five days a week.Set small goals and tick them off. Forexample, aim to lose 5-10 per cent ofyour body weight. Once you haveachieved that, set another goal andmove towards that.Weight loss takes time. Sometimes ittakes longer than you think and it canbe very easy to become disheartened. When this happens, just focus on oneday at a time. Sometimes you may evenhave to take it one meal at a time! Butwhatever you do, don’t give up. All yourhard work will be worth it in the end.

SENIORS OPEN DAYWEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2012, 10am to 1pm

Event Supported by:

To the Editor:Why is Waroona dying? Why, on anyday of the week do we see more peoplein Pinjarra shopping than in Waroona?Even Councillors and their wives havebeen spotted shopping there.I have had a few bad experiences in thepast weeks regarding bad service here.I went to one of the local shops for acertain Item and could not see it on theshelves. The shop assistant was busywith customers so I decided to ask theolder lady who was stuck to hercomputer. After a while she looked atme and said nothing. I asked her aboutthe item I wanted to buy. The answerwas very curt and sharp “Ask the girl ".Last time I shop there. I tried to get a local tradesman to do asmall job in my home. The person Irang turned up to look at the job inhand, “Yes I can fix that.” He gave mea quote and we accepted.I can't do it this weekend, he said as itwas Show day, but I will call on theMonday.

Surprise, surprise. We are still waiting. Is there any wonder that we see somany out of town tradesmen working inWaroona?

On Sunday 21st I had the misfortune tocall a certain member of the Shireworkforce about an incident. Havingseen this person driving round townwith a mobile phone stuck to the ear Iexpected to speak to them. But no,leave your name and phone numberand I will get back to you. Surprisesurprise, we are still waiting. It’s agood job that It wasn’t a life threateningsituation and we managed to fix itourselves. Why do we pay such bigrates? People passing through cannoteven get a cup of coffee etc. in thecentre of town, and let’s face it it’s notbecause there is no parking, come5.30pm and the town is dead.

What will happen to Waroona when theshopping centre extensions arefinished in Pinjarra?

The midget fortune-teller who escapedfrom prison was a small medium atlarge. The soldier who survived mustard gasand pepper spray is now a seasonedveteran.A backward poet writes inverse. In a democracy it's your vote thatcounts. In feudalism it's your count thatvotes. When cannibals ate a missionary, theygot a taste of religion. If you jumped off the bridge in Paris,,you'd be in Seine .A vulture boards an airplane, carryingtwo dead raccoons. The stewardesslooks at him and says, 'I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed perpassenger.'Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says 'Dam!'Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak werechilly, so they lit a fire in the craft.Unsurprisingly it sank, proving onceagain that you can't have your kayakand heat it too.

INADEQUATE TOILETS AT THESHOWGROUNDS

A public warning is issued to theWaroona Shire regarding the urgentneed for more toilets at theShowground. The Shire needs to consult with localstakeholders regarding permanenttoilets that are urgently needed.Waroona Show was badly impacted byclosed toilets and no formal advice wasgiven to the WAS Committee prior tothe event. The same situationhappened at the Vintage MachineryFestival four weeks earlier. No bandaid solution will be acceptableand the project needs to be addressedimmediately.Weekend markets, local footballmatches, Lions Annual Auction are aonly a few of community events thatattract large number of visitors. It isvital that these visitors are providedwith ample facilities and this includesplenty of clean, working public toilets.A full costing analysis is needed andthen let’s all work together for a smallbrick building that is well overdue.Be prepared for further public commentin December.

To the people of the Shire ofWaroona:I’ve presented my ideas to theWaroona Shire Council concerningLake Moyanup (DrakesbrookWeir). The ideas were as follows:a) Construct a walk trailaround Lake Moyanupb) Use Bonnie’s Bridge tocross over the stream feeding intoLake Moyanupc) Establish a caravan parknear the Lake.My ideas are now in the hands ofthe Shire Council. I have spentmuch time working out details andhave gone as far as I can go.Some may think a caravan park atLake Moyanup is not possible. I’vechecked this out in some detail. Aprivate owner could lease landfrom the Water Corp which ownsthe land around the lake.Alternatively a private owner couldlease or buy a small portion ofnearby privately owned land. Ibelieve a nice caravan park on thelake has great tourist potential.

Lake Moyanup is only 2km from thebusiness centre of town and localbusinesses would benefit from acaravan park being located there. My ideas are not earth shatteringbut they are a start. I am suremany of you have ideas to helprevitalise the town of Waroona.

Consumer Protection has begun asecret shopper campaign to test theskills and fairness of car service andrepair businesses in WA.Before each test vehicle is serviced, qualified Automotive Branchtechnicians check what work needsto be carried out and afterward thoseinspectors look again to ensure thework is up to scratch, matcheswhat’s been paid for and does notinclude extra unnecessary work. The program focuses on particulartypes of repair work that ConsumerProtection intelligence suggests hasthe potential to become a problem inthe marketplace. As well as checking on the validityand quality of work undertaken, thequality of advice given and accuracyof repair businesses’ invoices will betaken into consideration. The earlystages of the secret shoppercampaign have so far seen ticks ofapproval for the repairers. The campaign was prompted byconcerns about over-servicing in theindustry and the Department neededmore than just anecdotal evidence toproperly assess the situation. Also,in May a Midland company was fined$3,000 in the Perth MagistratesCourt for making false or misleadingrepresentations to a consumer.

In this case a consumer had taken hisvehicle to the premises for a serviceand was told that the vehicle requirednew brake pads and discs. Amechanical inspection of the vehicleby the Department’s AutomotiveBranch found that the brake pads anddiscs did not need to be replaced. It isan offence under consumer law for aperson, in trade or commerce, tomake a false or misleadingrepresentation concerning the needfor any goods or services. The secret shopper campaign is nowset to continue and ConsumerProtection has been working with theMotor Trade Association WA to makevehicle repair businesses aware ofthe program. The results will be usedto develop compliance strategies forthe motor vehicle repair industry.A general message to always use alicensed vehicle repairer is beingheavily promoted to WesternAustralians. This is happeningthrough an animated advert online, aseries of radio adverts and mentionsin print media too; such as thisnewspaper column.A dedicated website has beenlaunched so consumers can log on tocheck whether a vehicle repairbusiness holds a valid licence. Thewebsite is calledwww.myautorepairer.com.au

ANTHROPOLOGICAL STAGESOF MAN.

It seems when the Creator wasmaking the world, he called man asideand bestowed upon him twenty yearsof normal sex life. Man was horrified:“Only 20 years?” but the Creator didn’tbudge that is all he would grant him. Then he called the monkey, and gavehim 20 years. “But I don’t need 20years,” said the monkey. “Ten isplenty.”Man spoke up and said “Can’t I havethe other 10 years?” The monkeyagreed. Then the Creator called the lion andgave him 20 years. The lion said heonly needed 10 years. Again the mansaid, “Can’t I have the other 10 years?”“Of course!” roared the lion. Then came the donkey. He was given20 years and like the others said 10years was all he needed. Man askedagain for the spare 10 years and againreceived them. This explains why man has 20 years ofnormal sex life, 10 years of monkeyingaround, 10 years of lion about it, and10 years of making an ass of himself.

Don’t slip up when it comes to buyingolive oil. You may see a wide variety oftypes and brands on the shop shelf butyou can use the following informationto help you understand the labels andmake the right choice. There are two main types ofolive oil - virgin (or pressed)and refined.Virgin olive oil comes fromolives being pressed eitherphysically or mechanicallyand with no chemicals or heatused. It means the oil keepsits nutritional value.Extra virgin is the descriptionfor the fresh juice from theolive and it is the highest grade oliveoil, usually with low acidity and bestflavour. There are international andAustralian voluntary industrystandards in relation to what chemicaland flavour properties extra virgin oliveoil should have. You can read more atwww.foodstandards.gov.au.

Under the Australian Consumer Lawolive oil cannot be labelled as ‘extravirgin’ if it is not of that quality. (In factany attempt by a supplier of goods todeceive consumers in regard to the

standard of a product would beillegal).Virgin olive oil is lower qualitythan ‘extra virgin’ – it’s moreacidic and generally the flavourisn’t as good.Pressed olive oils that don’tmeet the grade of ‘extra virgin’or ‘virgin’ can be refined usinga chemical process to removeimpurities and this is called arefined olive oil.

Refined olive oil is lighter in colour andhas less flavour. Sometimes it isblended with small amounts of ‘extravirgin’ or ‘virgin’ olive oil to restoreflavour but usually it will still be lessnutritious than ‘extra virgin’ or ‘virgin’.Refined olive oil has a higher cookingtemperature or ‘smoke point’ thanpressed oils, making it generally betterfor cooking or deep frying.

Terms used to describe refined oliveoil can be confusing but here’s a guide:

·‘Olive oil’ tends to mean it’s a blendof refined and virgin olive oils.

·‘Pure olive oil’ may indicate that itonly consists of olive oil and not oilfrom other fruit or vegetables butthis does not mean it is ‘extra virgin’or ‘virgin’.

·‘Light’ or ‘extra light’ olive oil ismilder in flavour but consumersshould not infer that there are lesscalories or fat in this type of olive oil.

When buying olive oil, the fresher thebetter. Check if there’s a harvest dateor best before date on the label. Olivesare a winter crop so in Australia theharvest season is usually before theend of June, whereas in theMediterranean it can run fromNovember to January. This meansolive oils from Australia and theMediterranean are fresher at differenttimes of year.Consumer Protection is currentlycollecting olive oil samples from WAoutlets to review claims being made onthe labels. We are particularlyinterested in product origin. Forexample if the olive oil says MargaretRiver then that is where it should havebeen sourced from.If you think you’ve seen a misleadingor false olive oil claim you can report itto Consumer Protection by callingeither the Bunbury office on 97222888, the Perth general advice line on1300 30 40 54, or by emailing[email protected]

School children from St Joseph School,Waroona were a very important part ofthis year’s 10th Anniversary SouthWest Bike Trek, with all proceeds goingto the Children’s Leukaemia andCancer Research Foundation.

A team of 27 students aged between 8and 13 took part in an 8km bike ridethrough the town of Waroona. The ridewas completed by 25 cyclists, one ofwhom was Brad Franco, father of threechildren who attend St Joseph’s. Bradtook part in the whole 600km trek fromMandurah to Augusta. The Trek was a huge success and Bradfound it a fantastic way to get the kidsout and about and get involved in sucha great cause. He had a great timeriding with the kids and had lots oflaughs along the way. The moneyraised, on the last count, was over$50,000 which is a huge effort.

Brad’s two young sons, Fedele 11 andNikolas 10 made a huge achievementfor not only themselves, but for theirparents, family and the rest of thecommunity by riding the whole of thelast day, which was 70km fromMargaret River through to the Augustalighthouse. Brad and Sandra are veryproud of them and pleased they couldride with their Dad to help all the sickkids.

A huge thank you to everybody whosupported Brad with his fund raising. Thanks to Pet Stock Mandurah, CarnaEarthmoving, Waroona Lions and allthose in the community who helped outwith cake baking and money donations. And just remember it is all about thekids.

Anthony Snell, Justin Cash and JohnMason participated in the Ride ToConquer Cancer over the weekend ofthe 21st and 22nd of October. Some 1219 riders were involved raisingin excess of $4.6m. Their team, TheKenso Krusaders tallied over $15,000and apart from a little saddle soreness, all are feeling pretty satisfied with theirefforts. They rode 220km over the weekend. The event started and finished atMcCallum Park near the Causeway and included an overnight stay in Pinjarra. They would like to thank everyone who donated. It was very much appreciated. They have all signed up for 2013 having enjoyed the experience and hopefullymaking an impact.

Pennants is now in full stream withmixed success. Both the Men andLadies Tuesday Pennants have won oneand lost one, but the Saturday Men havejust had their first game and struggled tomake a team with nine playersunavailable. Unfortunately with manyplayers filling in positions they onlymanaged to come away with a half pointfrom the day. Let’s hope things improvein coming weeks. The ClubChampionshipMixed Fours was asuccessful day. There were sixteams entered, which is the mostwe have had inrecent years, butsince only one day was allocated around robin could not be played.Fortunately the two teams with two winshad to play each other for the final game,so that was virtually a final. Mark Hillerhad an amazing day and helped his sidebecome the Champions. His teammembers were: Barbara Hiller, BobClark and Terry Clark. The runners-upwere: Bob Waide, Hazel McCall, JoanScott and Mike Whitney. Well doneeveryone! Our Championship MixedPairs is being run over two weeks, starting on Sunday, November 4th andcontinuing on the 11th. The nominationform is on the board just waiting for youto write up your team. The Scarborough visit was once again agreat success. Twenty six players camedown from Scarborough and for once we

were able to match them with 28 players. The first round of games saw Waroonawin four and lose two, but unfortunatelythey only managed one win and a drawin the second round, so Scarboroughmanaged to scrape a win by one point.Sharyee, once again provided us with agreat evening meal, the onlydisappointing thing was the lowattendance of the Waroona bowlers. However, that didn’t deter the

Scarborough visitorsfrom having a greattime and that is whatit is all about. No onehad thought aboutthe number of rinksrequired for theSunday scroungersuntil Saturday

afternoon, so Bob Waide had to wake upat 5am and sort out the grass green , sothat it was playable by 9.30am. Welldone Bob Waide. Unfortunately onlyabout 15 Waroona bowlers turned up forthe Sunday morning scroungers sessionand of those, only Bob Clark was able tomake the final. However, he managed toseek revenge for the Saturday loss andcame out the victor. Well done Bob, andwell done all the volunteers who helpedto make the weekend another success.

On Sunday, 28th October we had anotherof the mixed events. This time it wasjointly sponsored by Wally Maughan andNick Stampone. The format for thesedays is to have two games with differentpartners. The points from the first gamecarry over to the second. Prizes are thenawarded to the highest points score for

both the men and the ladies. MikeWhitney narrowly won the men’s andBarbara Hiller was successful with theladies. Thanks to Nick and Wally forsponsoring the event and to JuneMaughan for providing afternoon tea. This year we have introduced a newaward called the President’s Trophy. Itis being sponsored by Mike Whitney andis to go to the Overall Club Champion. This will be determined by a point scoreas follows: One point for entering a clubchampionship event, two points formaking the semi-finals, three points forbeing a runner-up and five points for thechampion. There will be six eventsincluded in this award: the Singles,Pairs, Triples and Fours for either theMen or the Ladies and also the MixedPairs and the Mixed Fours. So just byentering these six events you will gainsix points towards the Championship.Surely this is a good incentive toorganize a team for the up comingMixed Pairs. Remember you have to bein it to win it.In keeping with the new Club image andcolours, we have purchased two newflags. Several suggestions weredesigned by Terry Clark and many ofthe bowlers voted on which one to have. The design is in Club colour andincludes the Noisy Scrub Bird.
