By the time youread this I wouldhave alreadymoved fromWaroona to live inPerth. But I’ll be

back on 11th June and every secondThursday onwards. A big thank youto the ladies who work extremelyhard. Welcome back to Margaret. Atthe moment we are working on theYarn Bombing project. Nola is busycrotcheting flowers and Jane isknitting flowers. Lois is busy finishedcrotcheting a square which wasdonated to the group to become aknee rug. Lil is finishing off the itemsmy Mum knitted to turn them intoteddies. Barbara’s project is knitting

Coral’s Charity Knittersbaby shawls and also has some ideasin mind for our “knitting Nanna” to sitin the rocking chair. We still need toyarn bomb the chair. Mavis is kittingscarves and Joy and Lil crotchetingrugs. I have donated many teddies, some bought and some handmade toKathryn to take for the children inAfrica. We still have many dolls tostuff and put features on that my Mumknitted – 40 in total. We wouldappreciate some help please. I ambusy knitting up the 12ply wool intovery, very long scarves to be used towrap around poles at the TouristCentre, there will be a total of five.Dates for June are 11th, 25th and 9th

July. Thank you Coral Culling.

One of our loyal contributors to theDrakesbrook Despatch is leavingWaroona. Coral is moving to Perth tobe nearer to her two daughters andfour granddaughters. When reflectingon her 43 years in Waroona Coral toldme that she arrived here on 28th

February 1978. She had two smallgirls, one three year old and one 6months old. Coral soon found theplaygroup which was held at the oldNestle’s Factory. She lovedmeeting new mums and theirchildren. She served on theplaygroup committee for 5 yearsholding positions as PurchasingOfficer, President and VicePresident. At that time the groupwas also raising money to buildonto the Health Clinic for their ownplaygroup. With help from Coral’stwo little girls Mrs McNeil cut theribbon and declared the newplaygroup open on 7th August 1982.In 1983 Coral’s girls were bothattending school so as the door tothe playgroup closed anotheropened for Coral when she became aMum helper with the Brownies. At theend of 1981 she became a brownieleader and was known as Brown Owl.She was Brown Owl for thirty yearsand has since helped Lynda with theGirl Guides and only stopped thiswhen she was needed to babysit herlittle granddaughter. Her links withGuides continues as a member of theTrefoil Guild which she joined in 2004and belongs to the Mandurah section.By the end of this year Coral hasbeen involved in Guiding for 35 years.During 1983 here in Waroona therewas a decision to start an Arts andCrafts group at the playgroup for theMums that had children at school.

FAREWELL CORALCoral taught knitting and they learnedcane weaving, copper art and manyother craft skills. This Arts and Craftsgroup were located in Birch Street formany years. Sport featured in Coral’slife when she arrived in Waroona asshe joined the Badminton and Tennis

clubs. She played one year of hockeyand four years of softball. Herchildren went with her when they werenot at school. She has assisted withmeals-on-wheels and joined the RedCross in April 2002. As a member ofthe Red Cross she has been on thevisiting scheme at Pam Corker house. For over 25 years Coral worked forthe Silver Chain association as ahome help in this area. Before thecurrent format of Waroona AustraliaDay celebrations began Coralbecame involved with Grace Lay andothers to provide an Australia DayBreakfast. At that time Coral and herBrownies helped with the event andparticularly the cleaning up

afterwards. With the support of thethen Librarian, Raelene, they starteda “Friends of the Library” this hasevolved into the present day BookClub which is still going. Coral’sCharity Knitters is a group with whichthe readers of the Drakesbrook

Despatch are familiar. This hasbeen operating since January 2010.One wonders how many kilos ofwool has been knitted, crocheted, and then donated to many andvaried groups locally and overseas.I expect it is in the hundreds. Thisgroup work extremely hard andunselfishly throughout the year andmany times Coral has organised fora local guest speaker to theirmeetings. These speakers areusually from organisations who havebenefited from donations fromCoral’s Charity Knitters. One of theamazing achievements for Coralwas to learn to swim. With the helpof Lynda she overcame her fear andtrepidation of water and became acompetent swimmer. Only in the

past 12 months because of a backinjury has she stopped going daily tothe Waroona pool to swim goodnessknows how many laps. Once herback has been fixed she is sure to beseeking out another swimming pool tocontinue this favourite of pastimes.“You are never too old to learnsomething new” advises Coral. “Themany and varied opportunities inWaroona would fulfil anyone’s goalsand ambitions. There are teachers ofjust about every topic and skillavailable.” We wish Coral all the bestin her new home and many blessingsin the coming years. “Lizzie” Drakesbrook Despatch.

A Guide to Buying your Home Understanding the costs of buying a home

When purchasing your home, there are some costs youmay expect and some you may not. To help you avoid anysurprises, we’ve put together some of the main costs youmight need to think about when buying your new home.

Stamp DutyStamp duty is a state government based tax that you needto budget for. It is levied on the purchase price and is paidon the day of settlement. If you are a first home buyer youmay be eligible for some concessions or exemption from

stamp duty.Legal Costs

There are some legal costs involved when buying and selling

Conveyancing – you need a professional conveyancer /settlement agent to legally transfer ownership of theproperty. This can range from $700 upwards depending onthe value of the property.

Landgate Registration –this fee starts at $190 for aproperty priced at $200,000 or below then increases $20 foreach additional $100,000.

Mortgage Registration –each time you register amortgage on your property, the bank will charge a $160 feewhich is payable at the time of purchase or sale.

InsuranceThere are a few types of insurance you might have to pay:

Lenders Mortgage Insurance – If you borrow more than80% of the purchase price of the property, you‘ll need topay(LMI ). This type of insurance protects the lender if youdefault on the loan. With most lenders, this fee will be builtinto your loan.

Building Insurance – Your lender will require you to insurethe building etc dated from settlement date.

Contents Insurance –If you want to cover the personalitems in your home, contents insurance protects all yourvaluables.

3 – 4 bedroom homes tosell in price range of

$250k - $350k

with other teachers to hopefully bringback some new ideas I can introduceinto the classroom," Mrs Entz said."We are a school in a lower socio-economic area and it will greatlybenefit and motivate our students toget involved in hands-on science

activities. It has given them somethingto look forward to and for me, as apart-time teacher, it is also motivatingand inspiring." Mrs Entz said that withWaroona being a small school with

Waroona District High School NewsScience Scholarship for Local Teacher

Waroona DistrictHigh Schoolscience teacherNicole Entz is

excited about meeting scienceteachers from around the globe at aweek-long education program inColorado, USA, in the July holidays. She is one of just two Australianteachers being sponsored by AlcoaFoundation to attend KeystoneScience School for a hands-onlearning program that involvesenvironmental issues and sciencebeing brought into the classroom. Thescholarship program is targeted torecognise excellence in teachingwithin the science field and allowseducators to further their skills. Whenschool Principal Cathy De Thierryencouraged Mrs Entz to apply, thescience teacher did not think shewould be successful. "I'm absolutelythrilled and will be looking to network

single science classes for each year, accessing extra curriculum materialand ways other teachers tailored theirclass programs to provide the bestopportunities and engagement for allstudents were important topics shewould be discussing at the program."If we can use this scholarship tointegrate new ideas into ourcurriculum then we will have aprogram in place regardless of staffchanges," she said. In a closecoincidence, Mrs Entz discovered thesecond national scholarship recipientwas Denise Honeybone from NorthDandalup Primary School, which herchildren attend. Alcoa WagerupRefinery manager Mark Hodgson saidthat the company, as the nearestAlcoa operation to the Waroonacommunity, was pleased to see ateacher from the town receive one ofthe scholarships.

Western Front Anzac Trip 2016

With approximately 11 months untilthe students set off for the WesternFront, it is all go in the FUNdraisingsector! Parents, children, aunties, grandparents, friends and everyoneelse who is keen to make this trip asuccess are busy behind the scenescoming up with new ideas on how toraise another dollar. The group havetaken on an amazing amount of workover the past 10 months and will con-tinue to do so until the plane takes off.No job has ever been too small or toobig (so far) for this awesome team tocomplete and it truly is very rewardingwatching the children get their handsdirty and work for this experience. One of our latest events was to caterfor 73 guests at the Waroona BowlingClub. From all accounts it was verysuccessful, but let me tell you it waslike the last 60 seconds in MasterChef at times. Regardless we had funand raised an invaluable amount. An

added bonus is the fantastic commu-nity support that we have received. The Waroona Post Office are alwaysquick to offer items to raffle and theshoppers at IGA continually buy ourraffle tickets which is much appreciat-ed. The Lions Club get behind thekid’s in every way they can, as do theCruising Car Club, Bowling Club,Cricket Club, Basketball Club, Com-munity Centre, Home Hardware, Wa-roona Fire Brigade, Mitchell’sTransport, Waroona Shire, PamCorker House and that’s just namingthose off the top of my head. A spe-cial thank you page will be printed in alater issue with the names of all com-munity businesses who have sup-ported the trip, so I do apologise if Ididn’t mention your name this time.Alcoa also has a few upcomingevents which are sure to raise muchneeded funds. We are about ½ waywith what we would like to raise in or-der to send each child and I have nodoubt with continued hard work on our

behalf and the community support wereceive in Waroona that this trip willbe a huge success. WDHS is a greatplace to send your child and withoutthe Staff support this would not be anidea turned into reality. A BIG thankyou to every staff member who hearsthe term Western Front and doesn’tscream and run away! An update willbe in each Despatch issue and willinclude some pictures of our childrenin action. For our first issue I have in-cluded several random pictures of thestudents working at various events inthe past 10 months. You name it andwe have probably done it! Catering, markets, sausage sizzles, gardening, serving, cleaning, selling and maybeeven a little harassing. Once againthank you! Please keep us in mind ifany jobs, ideas or whatever it may becomes your way and you think we canraise an extra dollar Written by LeahSeubert - Coordinator of the ParentFUNdraising Group

SUB CENTRE NEWSWellit’s June alreadyand the year has justflown past. Now to theextremely importantissue. Over the last sixmonths the sub centrehas lost severalVolunteer AmbulanceOfficers (VAO) for

various reasons leaving a smallnumber of local officers to carry theambulance job load. I’d like to thankthose officers who live in the Manduraharea and come over to do shifts to givethe locals a bit of a break and of courseour local band of committed peoplewho give up so much of their time tovolunteer when YOU the communityneed us. Officer numbers are seriouslylow so if you want to give somethingback to the community that you live in,then please give us a call and comeand see what we are all about.ORDINARY PEOPLE DOINGEXTRAORDINARY THINGS!RAC St John Ambulance (SJA)Train the Trainer Driver Training -That’s a mouthful I know. JennyMcNamara and I spent last weekendup in Perth at the RAC Driver TrainingEducation Centre (DTEC) learninghow to deliver the SJA Driver TrainingCourse. The highlight of the weekendfor me was taking ambulances fromBelmont Workshop out onto the skid

training and have all the CEPcompetencies completed and signedoff by the end of the year. All the skillsassessed are used whilst treatingpatients at different times and it’s greatto see our ambos so enthusiasticabout keeping their skills current.Good work everyone!VOLUNTEER AMBULANCEOFFICERS URGENTLY REQUIRED -Driving ambulances, providing FirstAid and attending to and transportingpriority patients are just a few of theservices the Waroona St JohnAmbulance Volunteers provide for ourcommunity. St John AmbulanceWaroona needs individuals aged 21+with a valid WA driver’s license andcurrent police clearance to helpmaintain this essential communityservice. Training and support forvolunteers is provided every step ofthe way. All you need is a currentProvide First Aid Certificate (formerlySenior First Aid) or be willing to obtainone. On the Saturday there was aFerrari out going through its paces onthe long course but for some reason ourinstructors wouldn’t let us near it. I reallyhave no idea why? Over the next fewmonths all of our Volunteer AmbulanceOfficers will be undergoing the newdriver training with Jenny and myself atthe helm. Learning how to control theMark VI Mercedes vehicle (whichweighs 4.7 tonne) under extremepressure is not an easy feat and Jennyand I look forward to having some funwith our ambos taking them throughtheir paces.Continuing Education Program (CEP)–This year SJA have adopted a newtraining regime for our Volunteers. TheCEP is very structured and Waroonahas taken it on board with great successafter being part of the trial last year withour Community Paramedic, Ken Hart. Each month the sub centre runs a CEPskills night on the first Thursday whereall officers are given the opportunity topractice the particular skill for that monthand ask any questions or get clarificationif needed. The training held on the fourthThursday of the month is allocated asthe assessment night where each VAOis then assessed andCompetent orNotYet Competent. It is the responsibility ofeach officer to ensure that they attend

had appliances installed or hadelectrical work carried out in thepast few years should contact alicensed electrician for a safetyinspection to determine if Infinitycables were installed.” “Anelectrician would typically be ableto inspect a home for around $100,though costs will vary dependingupon the size, location and designof the property. Such costs can berecovered from the supplier shouldaffected cables be discovered,” MsRickard said. “Consumers shouldnot attempt to inspect cablesthemselves. Any affected cableinstalled in accessible areas or nearheat sources must be removed andreplaced under the safety recall.”The relevant periods of cablesupply are: 2010-2013 (in NSW),2011-2013 (in ACT), 2012-2013(in Vic, Qld, SA & WA) and in2013 (in Tas). The recalls apply toall sizes and configurations of TPSand Orange Round mains powercables sourced from Infinity CableCo Pty Ltd and supplied under'INFINITY' and 'OLSENT' brands

The Australian Competition andConsumer Commission isconcerned that many unsuspectinghome and business owners havedegrading Infinity electrical cablesinstalled in their premises, despitea nationwide recall of thedangerous product last year. Of anestimated 4,000km of faulty cablesupplied by Infinity cable Co, only15 per cent has been remediatedunder the recall. Infinity cablesfail to meet safety standards due topoor quality plastic insulationcoating. Tests have shown that thecable may become prematurelybrittle from 2016 onwards, whichcould cause fires or electric shockif the cables were then disturbed.“Unsafe Infinity cable is currentlyinstalled in thousands ofhouseholds and businesses acrossAustralia - it needs to be locatedand made safe before it poses aserious danger to the communityfrom next year,” ACCC DeputyChair Delia Rickard said.“Consumers that purchased newproperties, undertook renovations,

An outing to Dwellingup has beensuggested for our next trip. Enquiriesare still to be made but it wouldprobably be a visit to a winery for winetasting and morning tea, a stop at theVisitor Centre for a browse at themany gifts available, then on to lunchsomewhere. After lunch will be a visitto a live marron farm before cominghome. The President and Secretarywill do some research and take theresults to the next meeting whenmembers can decide if they want todo this trip, on lunch venue and themenu etc. It is always difficult to findplaces to visit that are not too faraway but this seems to fit the bill. Itwas pleasing to see a few morepeople at our meeting and hopefullythose who are sick or tied up withmedical appointments will be able toattend the next one. At present weare getting slightly under half our paidup members at meetings so we coulddo better. Just an advance reminder–the July meeting will be our AGM. Allpositions will be declared vacant sogive some thought to nominating. Weare always looking for new membersso if you would like to join us comealong on the first Wednesday of themonth at 1.30pm at the SeniorCitizens Hall

The Chookyard Farmer

I am pleased to report the ChookyardFarmer has graduated with honoursafter his first ever Poultry ShowExhibition at the Harvey Show on theAnzac weekend. I was proud but alittle surprised with the outcome andalso had two entries that did notqualify. Missy Frizzle a gift for mydaughter Caitlin did not meetAustralian Standards because shehad hairy feet (ok in America) andCollie Black an Australorpe Bantamhad a different look so she wasclassified by the head steward as across breed. CB had an early feedand a private cage but has since putthe judge on notice by going cluckyagain and sitting on six fertile eggs.Winners were Priscilla a FaverolleHen and her Arauncana chick solo.Cleopatra a Gold Laced WyandotteHen and Dalmation a pretty black andwhite Ancona Hen. An old footballfriend from South Mandurah wouldhave called her magpie being a oneeyed Collingwood supporter. Buffy aBuff Laced Wyandotte was a gallantsecond. Lacey a gold lacedWyandotte Bantam Hen was unluckyto meet two slightly older Silver LacedHens imported from the EasternStates and whose new home is eastof Collie. The judges were helpfulwith feedback and said Lacey in mostshows would have won first prize aswell. Amigo a black Australorpe pulletand Goldie a Brahma/Creole Hen alsoenjoyed the ride in the old ute but noprizes. It was an interestingexperience and my competitive nature

hay in the wood tank. I was blamingthe moulting season and the cold endof Autumn. Last weekend theextremely strong winds and heavyrain knocked the mini houses andshelters around so I spent a couple ofhours making them more secure afterthe Lions Auction. Even got out thechainsaw to cut some nice thickpieces of timber from my old patio andthe old farm at Nos 56 to act aschocks to ensure stability to resistthese horrible strong winds we getfrom the Darling Scarp at differenttimes of the year. All chickens lovethe freedom of free range and theback lawn is nice and fresh forpecking and scratching. With thefootball season now in full swing andround six completed I have had to relyon the assistance of my wife Maryannto lockup and look after the birds’welfare. Our most recent purchase isa beautiful Silver Laced Wyandottepullet at the point of lay andappropriately named by my daughterCaitlin, Maryann as it was received onour Wedding Anniversary this week.Caitlin will be home for a nine dayholiday in early June and she will be agreat help in the Chookyard Hotel. The chickens will engage her afterseven years hard yakka with aBatchelor of Science and Masters ofPharmacy to qualify as a Pharmacistafter a twelve month internshipcompleted in February. A Pet SupplyOwner and a very good Vet Nurse ison the money when she recently saidraising chickens as a hobby and petsis addictive. With the beginning ofwinter only a week away the courtyardand surroundings of Chookyard Hotelhave stood up fairly well so far thisyear with no too much made andongoing improvements and fresh hay.I trust you continue to enjoy with methe journey of the Chookyard Farmerand even if you don’t have some rareheritage breeds like myself a smallflock of four chickens will generallyprovide you a source of protein andfresh food as well as being great aspets for children plus nothing likehome grown in a rural environment. Itis after midnight and I have just turnedinto a pumpkin. Prior to writing thelatest chapter I was on the computerpreparing football teams lists for theSaturday night game versus theStangers tomorrow night using theSporting Pulse System. The hotelresidents will all be in bed and lockedup safely when I arrive home about9.30 pm. Cheers and goodnight.Chookyard Farmer Ken

came into play when the judges votingand assessment cards made their way tothe tally table. A special breed of duckwas the Champion Bird of the Show fromAustralind for the first time in ten years.A special thankyou to my twoconsultants Kellie and Rona for a firsttime exhibitor. Pinoclean and Dynamoare two products for the trick of showingclean birds. I even purchased a miniblow dryer to ensure feathers and thechickens were treated like a ladies hairdressers salon. Unfortunately I was notblessed with my late father Wally’shandyman skills and had to call in 1982Premiership Player Jamie Herd acarpenter by trade to adapt some metaldog sheds to excellent Chicken Housesand hence the name Chookyard Hotel.Jamie, would you believe, raisedbantams when he was in primary schooldown south where his dad was a stationmaster. A bit of local history and his skillof placing perches together with meshdoors cut to size with hinges was secondto none. We ended up with two firstclass mini chook houses. So you cansee I have been busy at the MundijongMarkets buying bits and pieces at theright price. A Public thankyou Jamie. They have been stationed on dog bendstands with either a solid floor or weldmesh for hygiene and fox purposes. Iwas lucky to purchase two book standslate at the Lions auction for $2 anddismantled them to make up two nicenesting boxes as the others were fallingapart but in nearly a week not one egghas been laid in them. I have beenoutsmarted by the chickens who havediscovered the sleeping quarters in thehutch of Priscilla and her 4 month oldchick Solo is quieter and the wood tankwhere I store my bale of straw hay waseven better. I even collected a nicewhite egg from Dalmation tonight laid inthe rear of the tank despite theopportunity of laying in a straw bed in adishwasher rack and covered in fresh

First detected in WA in Parkerville in2004, European house borer (EHB) isa serious exotic pest of dead and dryseasoned timber of pine, spruce andfir. EHB may be found in dead treesor dead branches of living trees.Present in Europe, Africa, Asia, SouthAmerica and North America, EHBmost likely arrived in WA as larvae inpine timber. Many houses in WA haveroof trusses made from untreated, seasoned pine. If an EHB infestationgoes unnoticed, wood can reach thepoint of collapse. What to look for.Public awareness is crucial forstopping the spread of EHB. The EHBbeetle itself has a brownish-blackbody 8-25mm long, with antennae halfthe length of the body and two shinyblack bumps on the first bodysegment behind the head.

The wings are usually black and mayhave distinctive white patches. Nativelongicorn, jewel beetles and commonhouse and garden insects like clickbeetles and mole crickets are oftenmistaken for EHB, but are not ofconcern and do not require reporting.(see pictures).

Don’t Be Boredbuilding inRestrictedMovement Zones(RMZ) you mustuse treated pine orother non-susceptiblematerial. Movementof untreated pine inand out of RMZ

areas must be done in accordancewith Agriculture and RelatedResources Protection (EHB)Regulations 2006. Protect untreatedpinewood by storing it in a suitablebuilding or enclosure or keep it fullyenclosed in plastic wrapping material.Dispose of unwanted pine timber(including tree waste, off-cuts, palletsand furniture) via green council bins, council verge collection or directdeposit to a local council refusefacility. Don’t collect discardedpinewood from verge collections, waste bins or pine plantations. EHB have the potential to gounnoticed until structural damagecaused by the EHB larvae becomesevident. The larvae are creamcoloured, elongated and cylindricalwith an enlarged and flattened headand grow to about 40mm in length.EHB may be detected beforesignificant damage occurs throughindividual vigilance or regularinspections of untreated timber byqualified pest control providers. Youmay hear the soft sounds of larvaechewing or notice faint blistering onthe timber surface. Larvae pupate intoadult beetles inside the wood and exitleaving an oval shaped hole around10mm long and 5mm wide, which runsin line with the grain of the wood. Thepresence of frass; a powdery mix ofwood dust and pellets of excrement, beneath the exit holes are obvioussigns of EHB.What you can do? Inspect anyuntreated pine regularly. When

Patter from the Post Office

Whatsgoing onwithAustraliaPostAustraliapost

services have been in the news overthe last twelve months with a varietyof changes mooted as part of a reformpackage to ensure the viability of thebusiness. The following gives you abit more detail about what will stay thesame, as well as a fewchanges.Posties are delivering 1.2billion fewer letters than they didseven years ago. Australia Post is afully self-funded business andreceives no taxpayer funding. Withoutreform, the losses in the lettersbusiness would soon grow to anestimated $6.5 billion over a decade. What is staying the same?• Posties will continue to deliver mailfive days a week.• We remain committed tomaintaining our national network of4400 Post Offices, including inregional and rural communities.• Australia’s 5.7 million concessioncardholders will still be able topurchase a stamp at 60 cents with theMyPost Concession Account. Thisprice remains frozen.

• Express Post will continue to beavailable as a guaranteed next daydelivery service, when sending anddelivery is within the Express Postnetwork.Australia Post is not seeking, orexpecting, to make profits from thesechanges to the letters service. What will the new prices be?The Basic Postage Rate (BPR) willstill be overseen by the AustralianCompetition and ConsumerCommission (ACCC). Under thechanges, the BPR will be tied to thenew Regular service. Australia Posthas confirmed that subject to ACCCreview, it will seek to increase thecurrent BPR of 70c to $1. The price ofthe Priority Service will be set afterthe benchmark BPR rate isestablished. The BPR has onlyincreased four times in the past 23years and is currently the lowest inthe developed world. When are the changes effective? Not before September 2015 at theearliest. Australia Post will commencea nationwide consultation process, engaging our communities, employees, customers andgovernment on the implementation ofthese changesHope this clarifies things foreveryone..Cheers from your LPO Team!

• The price of sending a SeasonalGreeting card, or Christmas card, hasalso been frozen, at 65 cents. Together,Concession and Seasonal Greeting mailaccounts for almost half of all letters sentby consumers. This mail will be sent atthe new Regular speed.• Community Service Obligationsdictating the need to maintain at least4,000 post offices (including 2,500outlets in rural and regional areas) and atleast 10,000 street posting boxes remainin place. There is no change to deliveryfrequency, including rural and regionalareas. What are the changes? The Federal Government’s decisionallows Australia Post to introduce anadditional speed of service for senders ofmail.• A new Regular service will provide thecheapest option for consumers to sendnon-urgent mail and will be delivered twodays slower than the current timetable. The regulated performance standards forletter delivery will now be aligned to thistimetable.• Customers wanting to send mail at thecurrent schedule will pay more for aPriority service. This brings regular mailin line with service changes introducedlast year for business mail and widelyembraced by customers. About 70 percent of business mail is already sent viathe slower Regular service.

Now that ANZAC Day2015 has passed wefocus our attention onthe future of the RSL in

Waroona-Hamel. The Sub-Branchcurrently has 16 members. We wouldlike to have a conversation with everymember of the community that iseligible for membership. Please makecontact and we will arrange a timethat is suitable to catch up for a cuppaand a chat. At our General Meeting onthe 11th May 2015, Ivy Wilson waselected Secretary and Shirley Iseppielected Treasurer. We now have allpositions filled on the ExecutiveCommittee and we are lookingforward to a more active Sub-Branchin the future. Our guest speaker wasPeter Reynolds who is taking studentsto the Western Front in 2016. He isresearching the names on our WarMemorial and his research thus farhas left him with a number ofunanswered questions. If you have

any details of those listed on theWaroona War Memorial could you pleasecontact me so I can forward theinformation to Peter. This year theAustralian Institute of ProfessionalPhotograph(AIPP) wants to photographevery veteran of the Second World War.They are creating a compelling pictorialrecord of returned servicemen andwomen for the national archives. This isone of the most ambitious photographicprojects ever undertaken in Australia.Professional photographers across thecountry, accredited by the AIPP, aredonating their time and talent to createthis visual legacy. The AIPP understandthe importance and power ofphotographic images to capture aperson, a moment in time, and preservethat forever. With this project AIPPwants to honour our veterans andcommemorate 100 years of the ANZACtradition. Veterans will receive a printedportrait photograph, free of charge, fortheir participation. Register now at

www.aippveterans.comto register or call me forassistance inregistering. Membershipto the RSL is open to allcurrent serving and past servingmembers of the Australian DefenceForce and Allied Forces. AffiliateMembership is offered to the relativesof those eligible for full membership,Police, Nurses, St John Ambulance,Fire Brigade, State EmergencyService, Prison Officers andAustralian Protective Services. Iwould like to thank Charles HullContracting for their donation toANZAC Day. (Apologies for notmentioning in the previous issue, Iwas not aware of the donation prior tolast issue’s deadline for submissions)Please contact me should you requireany further information. Waroona Veterinary Clinic NewsParvovirus Warning & Senior Pet Month

Parvovirus:We have treated a fewdogs inWaroona andYarloop forparvovirus in the past month. Wesuspect we may see a resurgence ofparvovirus infections around town. Weare urging dog owners to make suretheir puppies have been vaccinated.Parvovirus is often characterised bypotentially life threatening vomitingand diarrhoea. Unvaccinated puppiesare the most common victims of thedisease however older, unvaccinateddogs are also at risk of becomingseriously unwell.Dogs affected by parvovirus can behospitalised and need treatment forextended periods (1 week+) which isnever easy on the hip pocket. Thisdisease isnot easily treated, but iseasily (and cheaply) preventedthrough vaccination. It is vitallyimportant that ALL puppies areisolated until they finish the fullrecommended course of vaccinations. Not completing the course meansyour pet will not be protected. Pleaseensure your puppy’s vaccinations areup to date. Also ensure thatadult dogs thathave had no vaccinations sincetheir puppy course receive abooster vaccination. These dogs arealso susceptible to parvovirus, if forwhatever reason, they did not developa good immune response to the initial

disease feed raw bones 2-3 times aweek or consider switching to aspecialised oral care diet (e.g. Hillst/d). You should check your pet’steeth on a regular basis for yellow orbrown stains or redness in the gumsor bleeding. If any of these symptomsare apparent or there is a strongunpleasant odour you should considera dental check-up.Lumps:Senior pets commonlydevelop lumps in older age. Somelumps like cysts, warts and lipoma(fatty lumps) are not life threateningand can be easy to deal with. However, there are cancers that canalso cause skin lumps. It isrecommended that if you find anylump on your pet you should get itchecked by a vet. It is important totake note of when a lump firstappeared and whether it has changedat all over time (especially if it hasgrown a lot in a short period of time).Signs of Disease: Changes inbehaviour or changes in drinking, eating or toileting habits may be asign of an underlying disease.Symptoms of old age diseases areoften only evident once there hasbeen significant internal damage, sodon’t wait until your pet has visiblewarning signs before switching to asenior diet and scheduling aveterinary health check.

vaccination course. We now havetriennial C3 vaccinations that cover all ofthe deadly viruses including parvovirusand guarantee protection for 3 yearsfrom one injection. This is well worth thevalue as they also include a completephysical check-up.June is Senior Pet Month. Now thecolder weather has finally kicked in, it isimportant to take extra care of olderpets. Most pets are considered seniorsonce they are 7 or older (5 years forlarge or giant breed dogs).Diet: As your pet ages their nutritionalneeds change. With quality veterinarycare and nutrition available today, petsare living longer and are thus at higherrisk of developing old-age diseases suchas arthritis, kidney disease and canineAlzheimer’s. A senior diet should containhigher levels of antioxidants, high-qualityprotein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and optimum levels of fibre.Even if you don’t use a premium food(like Hills or Advance), mostsupermarket foods have formulationsspecifically for mature or senior pets.Teeth:Tartar build-up and gingivitis arecommon problems in nearly all seniordogs and cats. Dental disease not onlycauses bad breath, but pain anddiscomfort when eating and can alsocause heart or kidney disease (fromspread of bacteria from the gums intothe bloodstream). To help prevent dental

Fire Recognition SundownerFriday the 15th of May, the Shire ofWaroona hosted the ‘Fire RecognitionSundowner’ at Memorial Hall. Theevent was in praise of all thevolunteers who selflessly gave theirservices during the January fires. Thefires widelyaffected thetownship ofWaroona withareassurroundingForringtonHeights andLyons roadunder immensethreat andmajority of thetown being forced to evacuate. Duringthis time, the effort from local firebrigades, community groups, localbusiness and individuals wasimmeasurable. DFES and manysurrounding fire brigades contributedbut without the local volunteers theoutcome could have been verydifferent. Supported by the Shire ofWaroona, Alcoa and Bendigo bankthe night provided an opportunity for

the residents in the affected areas toformally recognise those who assistedduring this period. As unfortunate asthe circumstances were surroundingthe January fire, it was great to see thesense of community and morale. Ourlocal volunteers are essential to our

community and itwas great to beable to dedicate anight to recognisethe time and effortthey put in toensure Waroona,Hamel, LakeClifton andPreston Beachare all kept safe

Quambie Park Celebrates the Generosity of PEACH

Quambie Park is proud to partner withPEACH (Personnel Employed at Al-coa Charity Help) in the delivery ofquality aged care services to the peo-ple of Waroona and the wider Peelcommunity. PEACH has generouslydonated $11,500 towards a newemergency call-bell system for theresidents of Quambie Park’s residen-tial aged care facility (Pam CorkerHouse). “Quambie Park is incrediblygrateful to the PEACH program andthe dedicated personnel who contrib-

ute to the program,” Mr Mike Walms-ley, Quambie Park Chairperson said.“Emergency situations will be avertedbecause the invaluable call-bell sys-tem means residents will only have topress a button when they need assist-ance,” he said. “Staff response timeswill be measured, monitored and im-proved upon to ensure the highestlevel of service possible.” The new

call-bell system replaces an existing butoutdated system. PEACH is an employ-ee-based charitable group of peoplewho pledge or designate a portion oftheir salary to a trust fund, which is thendispersed to a wide range of communitygroups. To date, PEACH has donatedin excess of $3.2 million to over 200community organisations since 1979.The personal approach taken byPEACH exhibits a very caring attitude tothe community and shows importantcommunity groups that PEACH contrib-utors care about the work they are do-ing. Quambie Park has been providingaged care services to country Austral-ians for over 30 years. The organisa-tion was founded in 1985 through abequest from local community member,Mr Tom Corker. Quambie Park’s di-verse array of services include: HomeCare Packages, Retirement Village liv-ing and residential aged care services. To access Quambie Park servicesplease call (08) 9733 1355 or email[email protected].

With Jodie Whitfield - Manager Small Landowner Information Service Dept.of Agriculture & Food, WA

June…halfway throughthe year andthe start ofwinter. Withthe coolertemperaturesyou maynotice a

decline in pasture growth rates. It maybe necessary to move stock frompaddocks with low levels of food onoffer (FOO), to protect these fromovergrazing and ensure good growthrates in spring. In some casessupplementary feeding may berequired. Stock with young will alsoneed to be monitored to ensure theyhave access to plenty of shelterduring inclement weather, this willreduce the risk of animals gettinghypothermia. If stock are in an areaprone to flooding, waterlogging orwithout natural or manmade shelterconsider moving them if severeweather is forecvaste. Now is a greattime to clean up your orchard. As the

however when their numbers explodethey can cause damage to yourplants. To keep slater numbers to areasonable level use minimal compostand remove objects which giveshelter, such as empty pots andstacks of timber. You may also wantto consider putting traps out nearvulnerable plants, by hollowing out anorange halve or filling a pot withpotato peeling this can lure slatersaway from young plants. Or provide aprotective barrier by making a collarout of the empty pots. Our seasonale-newsletter keeping you on top ofwhat you need to know for the comingseason will be emailed out in May.Sign up now at agric.wa.gov.au/small-landholder-information-service-e-newsletter to start receiving yourcopy. For more information on othersmall landholder events, visit our SLISFacebook page (facebook.com/DAFWAsmalllandholders) or website(agric.wa.gov.au/slis). Until next time,Jodie.

last of the apples are harvested, ensure you pick up any unwanted fruitand start spray programs to reducecarryover of fungal, bacterial and miteissues. Start pruning stone and pomefruit once the last of the leaves havefallen. Leaf fall can be hastened byuse of appropriate nutrient foliagesprays. Damper weather might lead tofood spoiling quicker, if you arefinding that food is spoiling before youget to use it consider preserving, drying, freezing, cooking or juicingyour fresh produce. This will help yousave money, reduce throwing out foodand enable you to take advantage ofseasonal fruit and vegetables. Thebest time to plant deciduous fruittrees, like apples, pears and stonefruit, is when they are dormant, inwinter. Evergreen fruit trees, likecitrus, avocadoes and olives, establish well when planted inautumn, so they have three seasonsto develop their root system beforethe heat of summer. Slaters are abeneficial creature in the garden

WFC has completedround 7 with allthree grades in avery strong positionfor season 2015.The Colts are stillflying high, with a 10point lead and ahealthy percentage,

but need to keep their feet firmly onthe ground. In the absence of GlenWilson for 2 weeks the teamremained focused under assistantcoach Mark Spence. Young playersJesse Meeres, Austin Lilly, NickScofield, Griffin Rae have all liftedtheir development from last seasonand have been well supported by new15 year old recruit Jesse Sawyerplaying with his older brother Caleb.Co Captains Josh Commisso andJosh Reeves have been leading fromthe front and Jake Wilson is enjoyinghis new role in the centre of theground. Josh Falkstrom has returnedthis year and shapes as a ruckman/forward together with Harry Ellis.Utility player Kohen Hart-Cole hasbeen in very good form havingimproved his fitness and enjoysshowing the way to his youngerbrother Shannon who always gives acontest. Tyran Planken has been insensational form after only playingpart of last season due to outsidedistractions Two new players whohave joined the team in 2015 afterfrustration with Peel Thunder Coltsselection policy are Chad Wrigley andJack Tomerini and again have fitted inperfectly with their new club furtherimproving the depth of the colts team.Waroona have played short in threegames and with the smallestpopulation base for team selection thequality of their football after sevenrounds has done the talking.Mandurah pushed them all the wayand in the last quarter the boys lifted anotch with four goals to zero.Experienced Colts Coach Glen “TheMaster” Wilson is insisting that histroops take one week at a time andwork on improving their deficienciesand not resting on their laurels. Theirform has created such a positiveenvironment around the club andWaroona supporters and players fromboth Reserves and League have beeninspired by this talented group ofyoungsters. The Reserves have been in solid formwith five wins and two losses to SouthMandurah and Baldivis and both athome. They lead Baldivis by a point athalf time but fell away badly in thesecond half and SM Falcons had two

league team after very good form inthe reserves to form part of the backsix. Leading competition goalkickerAlan “Foxy” Wilson kicked anothergood tally of five on a cold autumnnight and he is rated so highly byopposition teams he is virtuallyscragged at every contest. Four timesPremiership Captain Adam “Hands”Clancy has returned to form andfitness after playing a key attackingrole with Sav in the reservespremiership last year. Clanger as heis fondly known has played a role asa marking defender when required byCoach Dean Taylor this season aswell. Captain Ben Wright is a keyplayer and opposition teams aretrying to nullify his influence in themidfield, while Courtney Lakay after205 games, skilfully combines wellwith his old mate to give Waroonafirst use of the ball. In the last threeweeks Waroona League Squad hashit their targets with three toughgames coming up against Pinjarra,Halls Head and South Mandurah anda trust test for the team. Jayden“Carrots” Caratti despite a sore ankleblows away the opposition with hispace and combines well with therunning power of Ben “Chief”Mathews Herald. Jayden Derosa isalso hitting his straps in the last twoweeks. Utility Mat Thomas hasadapted his game to play back in thelast month and his high marks andlong kicks are beneficial to the teamoverall. The mosquito fleet of JustinGiumelli and Russell Shore are bothdangerous around goals and AlfredAngi adds to that fire power. Thedepth of the team has furtherimproved this year with therecruitment of Tom Vernon andSimon “Nugget” McMicking. LiamThomas has also worked his wayback into the team after a late start tothe season and needing to play acouple of games in the Reserves toimprove his fitness. Waroona LeagueSquad are keen to achieve higherhonours after the “one that got away”in last year’s Preliminary Final whenleading by 13 points with just sevenminutes to go. An Achilles heel maybe the lack of a tall ruckman but inthe first seven games Matt Atchesonand Clay Smith have always ensureda spirited contest in the ruck duelsand supported by Adam Clancy, MatThomas and Matt Jones. Utility RhettMason has enjoyed his new role on awing and hopefully will return thisweek against Pinjarra Tigers thisweek. Pinjarra will be keen to avengefor their first round loss.

much class on the day. Former CoachRocky Caruso has been appointedCaptain for season 2015 and despitethose two lapses the midfield led byRocky, Jackson Hiscock, Sean Guimelliand Zac Indich have all beencontributors. Steve “Sav” Srhoj whoqualifies for Veteran Football is still a keytarget up forward as he showed againstMandurah with four goals in the first half, but is likely to miss the next couple ofgames with a groin injury suffered in thethird quarter against Stangers. NathanChiera has rejoined the team after abreak for a couple of years and thisyoung rover has added to the reservesmosquito fleet. This has allowed MattMortimer to move deeper in the forwardline to support Sav and his six goalsagainst Centrals showed “Hungry” doesnot mind applying scoreboard pressure.Premiership Captain for 2014 Kurt Brownand playing coach Lindsay Wilson arekey Utility Players and both can take astrong contested mark to benefit theteam. Veteran Troy Purser ensures acontest when the going gets tough andrebounding defenders Michael “Pickles”Vellacott and full back Daniel Rogershave also been solid contributors for thefirst seven rounds. Ruckmen DeanShore and Ryan Wilson have given theDemon Reserves first use of the ball andGrant Coxon is playing more consistentfootball like he was a couple of yearsago. Finishing in the top three to earn thedouble chance for the finals would be theaim of Coach Wilson and his assistantRhett Mason.League are in 4th spot on percentage, but are only 4 points behind the leaders.Brothers Clay and Eli Smith are like abarometer to the League Squad. Utilityplayer Clay has served the team well in avariety of roles as tagger, key defenderand even leading the ruck when requiredwhilst Eli competes like “Ballantyne” forthe Dockers and his three goals lastSaturday showed his true value to theteam. After a year’s break RyanMcKinlay has slotted back into his oldpremiership team and has performedadmirably with three best on groundperformances. This defender does notmind running forward and kicking a goalwith his long kicks. Aidan “Archie”Fotheringham has been the mostconsistent defender all year sincetransferring from Kondinin, but struggleda little under lights this week against theStangers.. Former Colts player BradBromley continues to develop and hisrun from defence together with AaronPayrits has opposition forwards battlingto break away into open space. His oldteammate and colts captain DamienYoung has forced his way into the
