Coral’s Charity KnittersOur last gettogether for 2014we finished the yearby having ajewellery party.Thank you to the

ladies who ordered items. I havetaken beanies and a rug to PeelHospital. Our dates for January arethe 8th and 22nd. New members arewelcome. This will be raffled atthe Autumn Fair 2015. We are also

busy knitting/crocheting small itemsthat will be sold. Money raised isgoing towards Waroona St JohnAmbulance. We had a lovely morningtea on 3rd December at the home ofone of our Ladies. Mavis couldn’t getto our morning tea at the library soshe kindly hosted one for us. Thankyou Mavis. I hope that everyone had aMerry Christmas with family andfriends. Crafties Support Local CauseThe successful “Hanging on the High-way” held last April at Waroona VisitorCentre & Gallery raised an awarenessof the beautiful patchwork and craftitems created by “crafty ladies”

in Waroona and surrounding districts.“Not only did it bring together manywho had never met but it providedanopportunity to raise monies andsupport the Waroona CommunityCar,” said Mrs Jane Humby, aWaroona quilterand assistingevent co-ordinator. In Decem-ber a final cheque washanded over from the sale ofdonated items bringing thetotal raised from “Hanging onthe Highway” to just under$3,000. The response from allparticipants was magnificentand their generosity is to becongratulated ... it’s certainlyappreciated by the many thatuse fabulous community carservice. Just over $600 of theamount raised came from thedonation of a seascape for sale during

Jane Humby presents the finalcheque to Betty Derrick

the event. Mrs Jan Burne, an artistand volunteer at the Visitor Centre, was delighted to hear that rather thanselling the painting, Mrs Derrick hadorganized a very successful raffle.

“Waroona has a special andunique asset in the Commu-nity Car,” she said.  “It was apleasure to help out knowingthat the money raised willhelp its continued service.”Mrs Derrick has devotedherself to the CommunityCar and believes that it is anessential safety net for ourcommunity.  “It means peo-ple, in times of great stress, can have the pressure takenoff when they need to go tomedical appointments,” shesaid.  “We are grateful to allthe generous quilters, crafts-

people and artists and also to themany other community members andorganizations that keep the car go-ing.” For information on the WaroonaCommunity Car please contact theWaroona Community & ResourceCentre.

Chookyard Farmer - KenDecemberhas beena reallybusymonth inthe Chook

Department with 3 sets of chicks beinghatched. Penny “Celebrity Chook” hadthree chicks and Red Velvet (NewHampshire) had three chicks as well. This week Princess one of theFaverolles successfully hatched onechick but the first day of extreme hotweather last Friday caused threepremature chicks which were notready for the big wide world. Her sisterPriscilla decided to become clucky aswell and she is sitting on a dozenfertile eggs commencing last Saturday.A special thankyou to Kellie for all forspecial tips  to assist Mother Hens andthe Chookyard farmer successfullyrear their chicks. Consequently I hadthree trips to the Mundijong Markets topurchase some Hutches which wereneeded to keep the hens and chicksseparate from the rest of the flock. Myneighbour and Friend Robert did somerunning repairs to the floor of a nicewooden hutch on wheels with somehardwood and it is magic. Have beenusing it to house some chickens fromRoleystone for the next month for a

which they have enjoyed but keep aclose eye out for any brazen intruders. Ithas been full time ensuring fresh waterand chick starter especially for themother hens and their young ones butenjoyable. Last Saturday night a smallcombined group from Waroona andHarvey Poultry Clubs conducted theirChristmas Party at the DrakesbrookWeir in Waroona which was the idealvenue. Congratulations to WaroonaLions and the Shire of Waroona whohave made the Weir into an idealcommunity facility for both locals andvisitors to utilise. The Poultry Clubs arean ideal way to exchange informationplus birds if you decide to raisechickens as a hobby and to enjoy theprotein of fresh eggs as part of yourfood hygiene intake. Merry Christmasand Happy New Year to all theDespatch readers. Till next year.Chookyard Farmer Ken

friend of my daughter andunfortunately lost one on the nest dueto heat stress after being away for acouple of hours on that day. Broughtthe hose out and cooled off the othertwo and doubled the water supplyplus more shade. Sad as it was totallyunexpected and warned the ownerabout the danger of foxes I hadexperienced in Waroona. The FoxDeterrent lights are working a treat atpresent and even the cost of $211was not cheap they have done thejob. At the Mundijong Markets I havewitnessed some Waroona Localspurchasing items including a friendfrom King Street who lost five chooksand a duck to foxes after purchasingthe chickens three weeks earlier atthe markets. He is looking at traps one bay to eliminate his problem. I amlooking at hiring a fox trap from asource in Coolup. Have utilisedGumtree to purchase an Arauncanachicken(Wundowie-origin)consequently named Joan and shehas laid the special blue eggs for ninedays in a row and also a Chook Shedfrom Collie which will be set up tohouse the new female Chicks andHens. In the last week I have beenletting the original seven chooks freerange again after a seven week break

WHEELCHAIRS FOR KIDS

Wheelchairs for kids hascompleted a very successful year, producing 2,795 wheelchairs, bringing their grand total from1998 to 29,844 which means thatmany young, disabled childrenhave access to mobility. Thismobility allows them to join infamily and community activitiesand they can even go to school.Wheelchairs have been sent to 84islands and countries around theworld. Twenty three in Africaalone! Most are war ravagedcountries and now some areEbola stricken where povertyadds to their distress. Eachwheelchair has a brightly colouredrug and a toy packed inside thebox to bring comfort to the child.Coral’s Charity Knitters sent 28beautiful rugs and they werewarmly received by the volunteerworkers at their Wangaraworkshops. GOLD & WOODLong ago a man came from a countryno one had heard of and became ahard-working farmer. In due course hemarried. He and his wife had a son.Along the way his son lost a leg andhad to have a wooden leg. When theson was 18 the man from the countryno one knew told his son a strangestory. He told his son that when hewas in the mountains of his nativeland, as a boy, he found four goldnuggets in a shallow stream and keptthem. He told the son that somedayhe (the son) would find the nuggets onthe farm. The father died some timelater. The son forgot about thenuggets and years’ later when he hadmarried and had his own children hewas checking the windmill. He sawfour things glittering on the ground. They were the nuggets. The man withthe wooden leg was shocked and thenhe had an idea. He drilled four holesin his wooden leg. He secured thegold nuggets in the holes and putwood in place to hide the holes in thewooden leg. Over the years the manworked hard and succeeded ineverything he did. He became highlyrespected in the community. The

years rolled by and the man with thewooden leg grew old. One day heremembered the gold nuggets. He tookthe gold nuggets out of his wooden legand once again covered the holes withwood. He then sent a thick envelopecontaining the gold nuggets and a notetelling his daughter the story of hisfather, the gold nuggets and what hedid. He told his daughter to open theenvelope when he died. In a few yearshis wife died and a few months later hedied. The daughter opened theenvelope a bit later and found the goldnuggets and the note. She was movedto tears as she was already sixtyherself. The next week she got a thickenvelope and put in the gold nuggetsand put in a letter telling the story herfather told her. She gave the envelopeto her daughter and told her not to openthe envelope until she died. Who knowshow many generations will know thestory of the man who came from a landno one knew and his son with thewooden leg? One thing is for sure, Goldnuggets are valuable but the gold in theman’s heart with the wooden leg wasmuch more valuable. - Alan Calhoun

Sub Centre News

HappyNewYear!!!My fellowambosand Ihope youall have

had a happy and joyous Christmas andNew Year. As I am writing this beforeChristmas I can’t let you know whetherwe have been busy or not over theChristmas/New Year period. However,in the lead up to the festive season wehave been extremely overworked withthe ambulances going out regularly atall times of the day and night. Inparticular if you are going up to theWaroona Dam over summer please beextremely careful as we have hadmultiple accidents both on the waterand off. I was up there with theambulance and rescue helicopter onthe weekend and I have to say that Ihave never seen so many accidentswaiting to happen on the waterbecause of irresponsible use of watercraft. Please be responsible whilst onthe water and give plenty of room toother vessels and to people who maybe swimming. Please put the following

on the 13th and 14th January 2015(Tuesday and Wednesday). Thiscourse is run by Andy  TemplemanTwells and is well worth doing as younever know when first aid may beneeded. Last but not least anotherhuge thank you to Julie Dewar (AuntyJack’s Videos) for kindly lending theSub Centre some dvds for our Ambosto watch whilst on shift over the festiveseason. Let’s hope that our dedicatedband of ambos have some down timeand get a chance to watch them. Westill urgently need more VolunteerAmbulance Officers, so if you want tohave some fun, meet some fantasticpeople and learn lifesaving skills thencome along to one of our trainingnights to see what goes on. Trainingnights are held on the 1st and 4thThursday of each month starting at7:30pm at the Sub Centre in HenningStreet.

All funds raised from thedoor and 10% of all sales will go to theWaroona Sub Centre to help usprovide up to date equipment for ourambulances and in particular our newambulance that we will be takingpossession of in the New Year. Therewill be raffles on the day and heaps offun to be had. From what I hear theclothing may even be modelled bysome of our multitalented ambulanceofficers. We aim to provide the bestpossible ambulance service that wecan to the Waroona community but wecan’t do that without the help andsupport from YOU, the Waroonaresidents. Watch this space for furtherevents during the year. A belated butvery huge thankyou to Bill and LizCalcott who donated a three seaterlounge to the Sub Centre. It certainlymakes being on shift a lot morecomfortable and not quite so manysore backs from sitting on plasticchairs. As the voting slips piled up for thePeople's Choice Award in last year'sSea to ART held in October, it wasanyone's guess as to which exhibitwould take the coveted prize.  Thecompetition, as always, was hotlycontested with three pieces vying forthe top spots. At the close of theexhibition the votes were tallied withPeople's Choice going to Cockies, adetailed and striking painting byYarloop resident and Waroona VisitorCentre artist and volunteer, Vida Hill.

Shire Backs a WinnerRunner up was Autumn Farm, asubtle pastel by Everlyn Sturges ofCoolup and second runner up wasHMS Surprise an intricate replicascale ship by George Moulé ofWaroona. Mrs Hill had four entries inthe top 10 and prior to the resultsbeing announced, Cockies waspurchased by Shire of Waroonatogether with a delightful acrylicentitled Arums by Raymond Eccles ofYarloop.

RECREATIONAL USE OF THEGOLF COURSE

The Golf Club acknowledges thatlarge numbers of the communityenjoy recreational use of the golfcourse whether it be walking, jogging, exercising animals or simplyaccess to Moyanup Heights and theclub encourages this utilization of ourcommunity resource. The Golf Club as you wouldappreciate, expends much time, effort and considerable funds inkeeping the course in good conditionfor golf and also ensuring a safevenue for recreational use by thecommunity.Unfortunately, recently somemembers of the community do notseem to appreciate the work ofmembers of the golf club as we haveexperienced damage and vandalismto golf club property. If this continuesthe Golf Club may have to considerlimiting access to the course.Members of the Golf Club appeal tothe community to assist in eliminatingthis needless damage by reportingany witnessed incident of damageeither to any member of the GolfClub or directly to the Police.Committee, Waroona Golf Club.

Dams in low-lying areas prone tosalinity will need monitoring to ensurethe electrical conductivity (measure ofsalt) is below the thresholds forlivestock (1100mS/m for ewes andlambs or 1600mS/m for adult wethers).Watch out for algae in dams andtroughs; as the weather heats up algaewill need to be regularly cleaned out oftroughs, and dams will need to bemonitored and treated if necessary.Monitor soil moisture and irrigate asrequired. Maintain a suitable nutritionprogram, adjusting as required to suitcrop load. January is the month for leafanalysis of stone fruit and pome fruit.Summer prune deciduous plants, especially the more vigorous speciessuch as grapevines and  stone fruit. This will reduce tree size and allowlight to lower parts of the tree to helpimprove fruit colour.Baiting for rabbits during the next fewmonths can prove beneficial later inthe year. At this time numbers are lowand green food is scarce increasingbait uptake. Landowners may notconsider rabbits a problem at this timeof year but not carrying out controlactions can lead to growth inpopulations during the winter.Until next time, best wishes for a safeand enjoyable new year. Jodiefacebook.com/DAFWAsmalllandholders[email protected].

Welcome to summer! The weather isgetting warmer and the flies arestarting to buzz.As pastures start to hay off it isimportant to monitor stock for grassseeds. They can become lodged inanimals’ coats, eyes and ears. If theseeds are not removed they can causesores and abscesses. It is important to check that fences aresecure, as stock will start to seekbetter food through the fence.  If youneed to supplementary feed, it is betterto put the feed into troughs rather thanon the dirt to avoid causing digestionproblems, such as colic in horses. If you are running out of feed for youranimals, remnant bush and yourgardens are not good sources of feed.Grazing remnant bush encourageserosion and degradation and youranimals may also be poisoned. Yourgarden may also have plants that arepoisonous to livestock.Grazing is rapidly removing dryprotective pasture from paddocks.Plan to have a small sacrificialpaddock to place stock once plantmatter is reduced to around 50%ground cover. This is to preventovergrazing on your property and thelikelihood of wind erosion. Now is the time to soil-test paddocks todetermine next year’s fertiliserrequirements. Soil-test kits areavailable from your local rural trader.

NATURAL WAYS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR LIVER AFTER THE FESTIVE SEASONThis time of year our poor liver seemsto get very overworked andneglected…. with all of the richChristmas food and extra alcoholconsumption it can make us feel tired, sluggish and lead to many digestivedisturbances. There is however manyfoods we can add to our diets to helpimprove the liver’s function andmetabolism. Increasing vegetablessuch as broccoli, beetroot, carrot, cabbage, artichokes, spinach andasparagus are all beneficial to helpproduce ‘glutathione’ an enzymeneeded for detoxification. Making acoleslaw or salad is a great way to geteating these vegetables, where addinglemon juice and apple cider vinegar inthe mix can help kickstart both the liverand gallbladder into action, with ahealthy gallbladder being needed tobreakdown fats in the diet. Fruits suchwatermelon, papaya and avocado arealso beneficial where these can also becombined with some of the vegetablesand made into a juice. Papaya is greatto help with digestion and bloating you

may experience from overindulgenceof food this time of the year, papayacan also be bought in tablet form ordigestive enzymes may be needed ifsymptoms are intense. A good Bvitamin supplement is also quiteimportant for good liver function andcan be taken on a daily basis butspecifically before and after anyalcohol consumption. B vitamins arealso found in high amounts in walnuts, brazil nuts as well as ground linseed, almonds and sunflowers; these nutsalso contain important amino acidsneeded for the liver. Ground nuts andseeds are easily absorbed and can besprinkled onto cereals. The herbs StMary’s Thistle, Bupleurum, Tumericand Dandelion in liquid or tablet formcan stimulate liver function and liverrepair. Dandelion root tea/coffee canalso be consumed instead of regulartea/coffee where milk or milksubstitute can be added. Green tea isalso very good for its cleansing andantioxidant properties and great forprotecting the liver. Also doing the

obvious; drinking extra water (wherefresh slices of lemon can be added)and having alcohol free days as well asmoderating food intake. But by doing afew supportive measures for the liverthrough juices, herbs and therapeuticfoods, it can help your body recover alittle easier and make the New Year ahealthier one.

Trapping exotic invadersThis month we focus on two insectswhich long ago spread beyond theirhome ranges and colonised newcontinents. One is established in WA;the other is not. Populations of thefirst can be reduced using combinedtechniques and team work, whilepreventing the second pest fromestablishing relies on individualpeople being observant. Each insectis associated with the use of a trap, but with entirely different purposes.

It is crucialto keep up control for the next fewmonths, including autumn when themedflies present will overwinter andgenerate next spring’s brood. “Lureand kill” traps, which attract and thenkill medfly, are fairly effective if youare in an isolated area away fromother householders with fruit trees.Commercial lure and kill devices areavailable from garden centres. Foradvice on making your own traps visitthe Department of Agriculture andFood (DAFWA) websiteagric.wa.gov.au. Instructions includehome-made lure recipes, but pleasenote that home-made lures attractother insect species as well. However,if you are in an established suburbwith many fruit trees being grown forhome use, you are better off coveringfruits with mesh bags or sleeves. These can be bought online or makethem yourself from muslin or fly mesh.Make sure that they don’t touch thefruit as medfly can lay eggs through

However, they could occur anywhereacross the metro area and have alsobeen discovered in towns fromKalbarri to Eucla. Reports of waspsightings by members of the publicare an important way DAFWA canlocate nests. Anyone seeing one ofthese wasps should contact PaDIS.Adopting a trapDAFWA uses surveillance traps tocomplement public reporting. Since2011 it has made traps available tothe public. Contact PaDIS to order atrap, which comes with instructions onwhere to hang it and how to proceed ifyou do catch a European wasp.

European Wasps on a FishThe monitoring period began inDecember but runs until the end ofMay so there is still ample time toparticipate. Baiting involves placing anice cube-sized chunk of non-oily fishsuch as pink ling in the trap. The baitloses its smell within hours. The costis negligible: a single fillet providesenough for the season; chop up andfreeze, replacing every week or, atleast, fortnightly. The trap isspecifically designed for a Europeanwasp and rarely catches paper waspsor bees.

the cloth or mesh. Anyone finding anunfamiliar fruit fly should contact thePest and Disease Information Service(PaDIS) on Freecall 1800 084 881 oremail[email protected] becauseit could well be a species new to WA.Community actionMedfly reduction is much moresuccessful if neighbours, whether insuburbia or rural areas, join forces inthe fight. An untreated property thatharbours medfly virtually cancels outthe efforts of the diligent landownernext door. Untreated backyard treescan lead to nearby commercialorchards being infested. Homegardeners should remove a tree ifthey don’t pick and use the fruit.Fallen fruit or “hangers-on” in thebranches must be harvested andbinned.Detecting the worst waspEuropean wasps (Vespula germanica)are the last guests we want at abarbecue. Vicious stingers, they aredrawn to sweet foods, meat andsausages, and will crawl inside cansof cool drinks and beer. Within thewasp’s range WA is the only place inthe world which has prevented themestablishing. DAFWA officers havedestroyed 849 nests in the 37 yearssince the first was discovered. Thesewasps are established in easternAustralia, from where fertilisedqueens reach WA via freight andcargo every year. They then fly offand start new nests. Whencommercial road transport is thesource the majority of nests are foundnear industrial zones such asWelshpool, Kewdale, Bibra Lake,Canning Vale, Malaga and Wangara.Nests in coastal suburbs are due tofertilised queens reaching Fremantleby ship.

BULLSEYE (Dipstick) DRUMMOND

As always, ourvery owninvestigativereporter wassearching highand low forthose testy andintriguingproblems.Leading up toChristmas, this

news fell into Dipsticks lap:Santa was very cross. It wasChristmas Eve and nothing was goingright. The elves were complainingabout not getting paid overtime. Thereindeer had been drinking allafternoon and the sleigh was broken.Santa was furious. 'I can't believe it!'he yells. 'I've got millions of presentsto deliver, all over the world in just afew hours, the elves are on strikeAND I don't even have a ChristmasTree!' 'I sent that stupid little angel to

find one hours ago! What am I goingto do?' Just then, the little angelopened the front door and steps infrom the snowy night dragging aChristmas Tree.'Oi fatty' she says, ‘where do you wantme to stick this?'And thus the tradition of the angelsatop the Christmas Tree, came topass

The engineer wasinterviewed first and was asked a longlist of questions, ending with 'Howmuch is two plus two?' The engineerexcused himself and made a series of

Heat stroke in petsHeat stroke is acommon andlifethreatening condition seen in our hotsummers. When the temperature orhumidity is high your pets may be atrisk of developing heat stroke. Thesigns of heat stroke can include:· Excessive panting and or saliva-

tion vomiting and or diarrhoea

· Bright red or bluish gums.

· Altered behaviour or failure to re-spond

· Rapid heartbeat

· Seizures

· Lethargy, muscular weakness, collapse and coma

Heat stroke can kill quickly. If your petexhibits any of these signs you needto seek veterinary attentionimmediately. If you think your pet issuffering from the serious effects ofheat stress cool your pet with tepid(never cold) water and contact yourvet as soon as possible. What to avoid, what to do:· Avoid exercising or walkingyour dog in hot weather. Generally if it

Also take more care withlonghaired, overweight, very young orold animals or any animal with healthissues (e.g. heart conditions). Any petthat really struggles with the hotweather would benefit from being keptin an air conditioned environment dur-ing the worst of the heat. Some long-haired pets may benefit from a clippedcoat. This is not suitable for all breedsas for some the coat acts just likesinsulation – heating the dog in winterand cooling the dog in summer.Rab-bits, chickens and other small petssuch as guinea pigs are not immuneto heat stroke either. If your small petlives in an outdoor hutch or coop en-sure it is out of direct sunlight and wa-ter is always available. Large blocksof ice can help keep your pets cool onhot days. Freeze water in plastic bot-tles and place them inside thehutches or coops. They will act like amini evaporative air conditioner andcan be changed as needed. If yoursmall pet has an indoor cage considerbringing them inside to escape theworst of the heat.

is too hot for you, it is too hot for yourpet.

· Never leave your pet in a car.An animal left inside a closed car on ahot day can die in less than 6 min-utes. Leaving the window down willnot prevent the car from reaching ex-treme temperatures. Leave your petat home rather than taking them in thecar if you can avoid it.

· Dogs on the back of utes canget very hot and uncomfortable quick-ly. Dogs travelling on the back of utesmust be secured and have access toshade (a canopy) and water. If parkedup make sure your pet is in the shade.

· Always have water availableto your pet and take it with you whenyou take your pet out.

· Don’t forget outdoor pets -ensure outdoor pets have access toshade and water at all times. You mayneed to wet dogs down or provide apool filled with water for them to lie induring the hottest parts of the day. Some breeds are more susceptible toheat stress. Any breed with a short
