In 2020, a founding period of wine imaginary is proposed: the Greco-Roman Antiquity - 8th century BC. 5th century AD JC
DRINK WITH THE GODS - A DECOMPLEXED APPROACH TO ANTIQUITY
Clear positioning:
▪ Propose a free and lively reading of Antiquity▪ Focus on experience and sensoriality▪ Promote the tone of the narrative in order to address a wide audience
Goal:
Involve the visitor in his discovery of the theme, by promoting sensoriality, as it was placed at the heart of the sacred rituals of the Greco-Roman world.
Through a very open treatment of space, visitors will walk between the works, following a narrative thread enriched by multimedia devices and sound effects.

The scenography of this exhibition was entrusted to the agency bGc studio, founded in 2009 by Giovanna Comana and Iva Berthon Gajsak, both architects registered with the order of architects of Île-de-France. Many great institutions have already trusted them: the Grand Palais, the Picasso Museum, Paris Museum, MUCEM, etc ...

DRINK WITH THE GODS - CREATIONS COMMITTED BY THE FOUNDATION
An unprecedented confrontation between ancient mythology and the artistic universe of three visual artists from the urban arts.
At the invitation of the Foundation, artists from the Bordeaux scene and involved in various projects in France and abroad will create figurative monumental works, echoing the ancient works exhibited. These installations, fully integrated into the exhibition, offer a reading of major mythological scenes yet rarely represented in the ancient period.

Exceptional loans
Nearly 80 ancient works from Greece, France and Switzerland will be gathered, showing the refinement of the ancient period. With the exceptional participation of the Louvre Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
Works with strong imaginaries
Representations of gods and myths related to the vineyardand wine in ancient iconography (ceramics, mosaics, murals, sculptures ...), banquet scenes and objects attached to the service of wine. But also artistic commissions for the exhibition by local artists from "Street art".
An invitation to explore all the epic riches of the Dionysian myth.
The Rothschild vase : a flagship exhibit
The object, of great rarity both by the myth that it tells that by its form, reveals how the culture of the vine and the wine were imposed in Greece by the intermediary of Dionysus.
Given from baron Edmond de Rothschild to the Musée d’art et d’histoire from Geneva.
The Cratère de Vix: the largest vase ever discovered in Europe
It was found in the tomb of a Celtic princess dating from the 5th century BC. At nearly 1.6 metres tall, it could hold over a thousand litres of wine, equivalent to 25 amphoras! A replica will be on display at the exhibition.

DRINK WITH THE GODS - 5 SECTIONS AT THE HEART OF THE EXHIBITION
1. At the table of the gods
Visitors will discover the myths forged by the Greeks to explain the invention of the vine and its gift to humanity. At the heart of these myths appears Dionysus, divine figure who will be the thread of the exhibition.
2. Dionysus, the god with many faces
All the complexity of the Dionysos character will be revealed here. Young or old, African or Indian, crazy or wise, the many faces of Dionysos are staged on the vases during a millennium.
3. An unsettling procession
A staging of the procession and the Dionysian feasts will be proposed, illustrating the duality of Dionysosand the effects of the wine, in turn beneficial or destructive.
4. From wisdom to madness: the banquet
The banquet is one of the most emblematic rituals instituted by the Greeks for the consumption of wine and one of the highlights of the exhibition. A banquet hall will be set up in the heart of the course and will gradually become animated, offering a real sensory experience to the public.
5. Civilising wine
This last section is dedicated to the phenomenon of generalization of wine that will accompany the vast cultural transmission from Greece to Italy.

DRINK WITH THE GODS – BUDGET BREAKDOWN
This major cultural and artistic exhibition at La Cité du Vin represents the culmination of a long period of work undertaken by the Fondation team, in close collaboration with the curator and the scientific committee.
This exhibition directly supports the Foundation's missions, offering an original perspective and a fresh look at the figure of Dionysus.
Funds from patrons’ donations will enable the Foundation to provide a multi-form exhibition in association with major museum institutions, develop a unique, immersive exhibition design and support local artistic creation through commissions with plastic artists from the urban world.
