Crawshaw Academy Redefining the future for people and places
e-Bulletin Issue 4: 26th September 2014
HEAD...line
Monday was one of those great days as a Headteacher
as we celebrated student achievement at our Awards
Presentations for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. It was a
great pleasure to take time to publicly recognise our
students’ success over the last twelve months. In total
we gave out 130 awards to Key Stage 3 students and
106 to Key Stage 4 students and it was really pleasing to
meet the parents who came along to each ceremony.
We look forward to building on events such as these in
the future.
Particular congratulations go to Becky Halliwell for the Key Stage 3
Headteacher’s Award and to Megan Flaherty and Katherine Torrance, joint
winners of the Headteacher’s Award for Key Stage 4.
I’d just like to thank all students for their great start to the year ….. keep it
up and build upon these standards! Please take a look at the clubs and
societies available to your child during the week (page 5). It could be the
start of a lifelong interest!
EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES
DOG SAYS ‘BAU’ – IF ITS ITALIAN!
European Day of Languages takes place on 26th September. Organised by the Council of Europe and the European Union, it is a celebration of linguistic diversity in Europe and
promotes language learning.
The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are:
Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learnt in
order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding;
Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered.
Encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, for professional
needs, for purposes of mobility or for pleasure and exchanges. To find out more follow the following link: http://edl.ecml.at/Home/tabid/1455/language/en-GB/Default.aspx
Here at Crawshaw, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their linguist knowledge by taking part in the Form Quiz. They can also practise making silly noises in the ‘Animal Sounds Quiz’ available in the library.
Winners to be announced soon.

EMERGENCY CLOSURE: It is always possible that we might be forced to close at anytime.
Snow, ice and severe cold can cause all sorts of issues including disruption to transport links, heating
issues or dangerous conditions underfoot both on the premises and out in the community. Should
the school need to close (either before 8:30am or during the school day) we will send a text message
to parents / carers to notify you of the closure as soon as possible. It is therefore essential that we
have the correct numbers to contact you on. We will also keep the website’s home alert page
(www.crawshawacademy.org.uk) and our twitter feed @CrawshawAcademy updated with
information / instructions as necessary. Details of school closures / late openings are also registered
live with Leeds City Council who inform local radio (BBC Radio Leeds) on our behalf so that they can
keep listeners up to date. Unfortunately it is not possible to telephone all parents when such events
take place, but we shall, of course, make every effort to provide explanatory letters if we have to
close. Clearly, our priority is to offer a safe learning / working environment for our students and
staff, and we will do everything we can to avoid disruption to normal practices.
All parents are reminded that pupils should always have some means of access to your home or to
that of a trusted friend or neighbour with whom a permanent agreement has been made. Please
write down your agreed arrangements in your child’s planner.

KATHERINE TORRANCE - YEAR 11
Katherine is a member of the GB Diving team (Junior and Senior) and has competed in Amsterdam, Canada, Italy (2014 Bolzano 20th Fina Grand Prix) and more recently in the World Driving Championships in Russia where she took sixth place and was only 14 points from a medal position!
Katherine is an ex-gymnast and trains every day at the John Charles Centre, Middleton. Her ambitions are to participate in the European Games and ultimately the 2016 Olympic Games. She also finds time to be an outstanding student at Crawshaw; illustrated by her being awarded the Headteacher’s Prize for KS4.
We at Crawshaw are very proud of her and wish her every success in fulfilling her dreams!

Wednesday, 24th September saw the Year 11 rugby team (pictured) in action in the preliminary rounds of the Carnegie Champion Schools’ competition. The boys narrowly lost out in close games with Cockburn, Mount St Mary's and Morley Academy. The team were without a number of their club players, but no matter the level of experience, the team represented Crawshaw with great heart.
