the tactical situation, and transfer of onboardtactical information to key battle group par-ticipants or land-based command centers.

The AN/APS-145 radar system incorporatesa significant extension in detection rangeover predecessor Hawkeye radar systems. It also includes several elements designedto optimize performance in the littoral environment, including an environmentalprocessor, a triple pulse repetition frequency(PRF) mode, an automatic channel monitoring/selection feature to provide the operatoroptimum radar channel utilization, and avariable rotodome speed control. The IFFsystem’s range is extended commensuratewith the radar system and incorporates sev-eral features to improve target detectionand identification. The incorporation of aJoint Tactical Information DistributionSystem (JTIDS) enhances the existing com-munications suite with greater anti-jam,secure, voice, and data communications.The combined Carrier Airborne InertialNavigation System Version II (CAINS II) and

This multimission system enhances aforce’s effectiveness through itsadvanced detection and information

processing capabilities. The E-2C’s radarand identification friend or foe (IFF) systemscan detect targets at ranges in excess of300 nmi, and its electronic support measures(ESM) system detects and classifies targetsat distances beyond the radar limits. Onboardcommunication and data processing/distribu-tion subsystems are capable of transmittingthe tactical picture to command centers atsea or ashore, making it an ideal airbornebattle management command and controlasset and a key FORCEnet enabler withinthe Sea Power 21 warfighting construct.

The flight crew consists of two pilots and threemission system operators. The incorporationof high levels of automation in the targetacquisition and identification systems enablesthe three operators to perform a wide rangeof battle management functions. Each operatorcan work independently in all operationalroles: sensor utilization, monitoring/control of

management (CNS/ATM) developed by theFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) andInternational Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) and augmented by Chief of NavalOperations (CNO), the Hawkeye 2000 willundergo a cockpit upgrade. The upgradewill provide the ability to comply with 8.33 KHzradio communication channel separation,enhanced mode S transponder, and requirednavigation performance (RNP) area navigation (RNAV) to operate in nationaland international airspace. In addition, thecockpit upgrade will improve the flight man-agement software computer processing byupdating the multifunction computer displayunits (MFCDUs) and replacing the traditional airspeed, altitude, and attitudereferences with 6x8 in. and 9x12 in. flatpanel active-matrix liquid crystal displays(AMLCD). This planned upgrade will allowfor the implementation of a tactical fourthoperator (T4O) at the co-pilot position.Supplementing this upgrade is a COTS-based precision approach capability utiliz-ing the Garmin-530 which delivers land-based ILS, VHF omni-range, and color mov-ing-map display.

Advanced Control Indicator Set(ACIS)Color tactical workstations, commonlyreferred to as the ACIS, provide each operator with greater flexibility in displaymanagement and presentation. The ACISis a COTS open architecture workstationthat leverages the technology and ruggedmilitary construction of the AN/UYQ-70Advanced Display System workstation tomeet the AEW&C requirements with full sup-portability. The ACIS workstation consists ofa 20-in. high resolution flat panel displayand a Versa Modular European (VME) rack

global positioning system (GPS) navigationalaids provide fully integrated, accurate andreliable navigation and target location.

Hawkeye 2000 Elements

Mission Computer Upgrade (MCU)At the core of the Hawkeye 2000 systemconfiguration is an open architecture centralmission computing system. Capitalizing oncommercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology,the current mission computer, based uponthe Raytheon Model 940, provides thememory, processing power, and datathroughput to support the expanding mis-sion roles of the Hawkeye 2000. In thenear future, a follow-on computer upgradewill occur which will utilize a COTS single-board computer (SBC) to improve the pro-cessing power of the mission system anddecrease operating and procurement costs.The SBC architecture will allow for morerapid and frequent upgrades to the computeras both technology and mission requirementsevolve. A COTS-based data loader/recorder unit serves to load the tactical pro-grams and provides recording capability forthe mission. The tactical program andother mission-related data are contained ona removable media cartridge (RMC) forinsertion into the system prior to each flight;upon mission completion, the RMC can beremoved and mission data can be playedback and reviewed.

containing all the processing, I/O interfaces,and mass storage housed in an environ-mentally insulated package. The human-machine interface designed into the ACISallows the operators to perform many battlemanagement functions. The ACIS and itsWindows-like functionality allows the three-person crew to perform missions that require amuch larger crew size in other systems.

Cooperative EngagementCapability Integrated into the Hawkeye 2000 and keyto Theater Air Defense is the CooperativeEngagement Capability (CEC). The CECairborne CommonEquipment Set (CES)provides a highcapacity dataexchange of detailedsensor informationbetween multiple plat-forms, the aircraft carrier’s commandcenter, and surfacecombatants forenhanced fleet-wideconnectivity and situational awareness. TheCES consists of a Cooperative EngagementProcessor (CEP) and a Digital DistributionSystem (DDS) with a 54-in. electronicallysteerable circular antenna mounted on thelower centerline of the E-2C fuselage. Thisnew system enables data fusion of onboardand offboard sensor information to enhancethe fleet’s composite tactical picture.

The CEP, the heart of the CEC systeminterfacing with the Hawkeye’s central mission computer, facilitates the network’sdata exchange with onboard tactical information (radar, IFF) and enables theCEC relay function to extend surface longrange connectivity.

Satellite CommunicationsThe Hawkeye’s vast suite of HF/VHF/UHFand JTIDS communications systems hasbeen expanded with a fully integrated satellitecommunications (SATCOM) capability.Incorporation of a SATCOM radio communi-cations set and the Multimission AdvancedTactical Terminal (MATT) provides the Hawkeyewith an expanded over-the-horizon (OTH)wide-band and narrow-band voice/datacommunications capability. This systemprovides the E-2C with longer range con-nectivity and enables access to various tactical databases for improved situationalawareness and connectivity beyond the

Hawkeye’s existingsurveillance volume.

Electronic SupportMeasuresAdvancements inreceiver and processortechnology haveenabled replacement ofthe previous ESM sys-tem with a more capa-ble system at signifi-

cantly less weight and volume. This systemcomplements the active sensor suite with a passive system capable of detecting a widerange of airborne and surface emitters,determining the emitter’s signal parametersand azimuth, and identifying the emitter bycomparing it to an onboard intelligence file.

NP2000The Hawkeye’s familiar four-bladed pro-pellers have been replaced with an eight-bladed system called NP2000. This systemupgrade offers many benefits includingreduced noise and vibration, improved relia-bility, and increased maintainability. Thepropeller blades are constructed of a com-posite material, mounted on a single-piecesteel hub, and digitally controlled.
