    Preparation Day

    Cutting the Lumber

    Summary

The 2x6 lumber will be cut to the correct dimensions for the forms.

    Helpers Required

    One adult helper

    Tools Required

Safety glasses, miter saw, carpenter pencil, tape measure

    Materials Required

    2x6 lumber

    Process

Using the concrete form diagram, the adult helper will measure and mark each length of

lumber to be cut. After making each individual mark on the lumber, the helper will wear safety

glasses and, using a miter saw, will cut the board at that mark. He will continue this process

until he has made four boards of both lengths of twenty-seven and forty-eight inches.

    Day 1

Removing mulch and excess dirt (debris)

    Summary

The day will begin by removing all existing mulch from the area surrounding the columbarium.

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    2/10

    Final Project Plan 2/10

    Helpers Required

Seven: three to rake debris into piles; three to shovel debris; one to empty wheelbarrows and

    measure progress

    Tools Required

Work gloves, garden rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, tape measure

    Process

A group of helpers will wear work gloves while using garden rakes to move all existing mulch

into piles. Another group of helpers will wear work gloves while shovelling the piles of debris

into nearby wheelbarrows. One other helper will maneuver wheelbarrows near the piles that

the first group of helpers will have made. When each wheelbarrow approaches full capacity,

the helper will maneuver it to the dirt pile just south of the columbarium. There he will dump

the contents of the wheelbarrow and then maneuver the wheelbarrow back near the work site.

Periodically, this helper will measure the vertical distance between the sidewalk and the

surface of the debris being removed until the distance between the two is two inches. This

process will continue until all three sections are excavated to a two-inch depth.

Measuring the Location of the Forms

    Summary

Using the bench dimension diagram, two helpers will work cooperatively to measure the

location of each corner of the to-be concrete footer. At each of these points, another helper

will put a stake in the ground.

    Helpers Required

    Three

    Tools Required

2 Tape measures, sledge hammer, utility knife

    Materials Required

    8 stakes

    Process

Beginning at the origin where the two sidewalks meet of each of the two areas, one helper

will measure the horizontal distance from the sidewalk to each point while another helper does

the same in the vertical direction. A third helper will pound a stake to a depth of six inches at

the intersection of the two measurements.

    Excavating

    Summary

The two staked-out areas will be dug out so that the concrete forms can be laid.

    Helpers Required

    Tools Required

Work gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows, tape measure

    Process

A group of helpers will wear work gloves and shovels and will excavate the staked areas to a

depth of eight inches below the level of the nearby sidewalk and to a width of approximately

two inches beyond the stakes on all sides. The dirt they dig out will be placed in wheelbarrows

adjacent to the two areas. When a wheelbarrow becomes full, one helper will maneuver it to

the dirt pile just south of the columbarium. There he will dump the contents of the

wheelbarrow. Digging and dumping will continue until the areas have been excavated to the

proper dimensions. Periodically, one helper will use a tape measure to evaluate the progress.

    Attaching the stakes

    Summary

Stakes to secure the forms in the ground will now be attached to the forms.

    Tools Required

Safety glasses, cordless drill, deck screws, tape measure, carpenter pencil

    Materials Required

    2x4

    Process

The first step is to screw the stakes to the form boards. Each forty-eight-inch board will have

two stakes one at and level with each end of each board. The twenty-seven inch boards will

have one stake affixed at the center of the board. The stakes will be attached to the form

boards so that the top of the stakes are level with the top of the form boards. Two screws will

attach the stakes to the boards; they will be screwed on the vertical centerline of the stake

    4/10

    Final Project Plan 4/10

one one-inch from the top of the stake and the board, and the other one-inch from the bottom

of the board. The helpers will measure and mark the vertical centerlines of each stake and mark

the two locations on each stake that a screw is to be inserted. The boards will be laid upon the

ground so that the surface of the five-and-a-half-inch part of the board is parallel to the ground,

as they will become more stable for drilling in this position. Helpers will wear safety glasses and

acquire cordless drills as they position the stakes and ready their screws. They will then fasten

screws to the form boards on each marked location on the stakes until all the stakes have been

    securely fastened.

    Setting the forms

    Summary

Now that each forms corners are marked and the areas have been dug out, the forms are

    ready to be assembled.

    Tools Required

Safety glasses, cordless drill, deck screws, tape measure, carpenter pencil, level, hammer,

    sledge hammer, spray paint

    Process

The stakes that were placed earlier represent the four corners of each of the two forms. One

helper will now pull the four stakes, one at a time. Now, the four forty-eight-inch boards will be

set; both of each boards stakes will be set into the locations now void of a stake. These boards

should be adjusted as needed so that the length from each board inside-to-inside is exactly

eighteen inches and the ends of the boards are exactly parallel. The twenty-seven-inch boards

will now be installed so that each of their ends is flush with the outside of each adjacent,

perpendicular forty-eight-inch board. A combination of a sledgehammer and a hammer will be

used to pound the boards into the ground until they are flush with the adjacent sidewalk. The

flushness of the forms will be periodically tested by placing one end of a 2x4 on the sidewalk

and the other end across the form; then, a level will be placed in the middle of the 2x4 so that

the longest part of the level is parallel with the board.

Finally, each form will be screwed together. Starting at each twenty-seven-inch board,

two screws will be sunk into each perpendicular intersection of a long and short board so that

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    Final Project Plan 5/10

the first screw is approximately one inch below the top of the board, the second screw is one

inch from the bottom of the board, and the two screws fall on the same vertical line. A tape

measure and carpenter pencil, respectively, will be used to measure and mark these locations.

Helpers will wear safety glasses acquire cordless drills before they begin to sink the screws.

    Preparing the forms

    Summary

The forms are now secure in the ground and flush with the nearby sidewalk. It is now time to

begin preparing the forms and the base.

    Tools Required

    Tamper

    Materials Required

    Gravel

    Supplies Required

    Rag, vegetable oil

    Process

The inside of the forms will be oiled so that the concrete will easily separate from the lumber

when the time comes to remove the forms after the concrete has cured. A rag will be lightly

dampened with vegetable oil and then rubbed along every inside surface of the forms until

    thoroughly coated.

To create a solid base for the concrete, gravel will be poured to a depth of four inches and then

compacted to a depth of three inches using a tamper. To compact the gravel, one helper will go

back and forth along the surface of the gravel and will exert a downward force from the tamper

onto the surface of the gravel. A tape measure will be used to confirm the progress of the

    compaction.

    Unloading the concrete

    Summary

The concrete will be donated by Ozinga, so well need to unload it from the truck into

    wheelbarrows.

    Tools Required

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    6/10

    Final Project Plan 6/10

    Wheelbarrows

    Process

Two commercial grade wheelbarrows will be maneuvered to the parking lot. The Ozinga

delivery man will pour the concrete into the wheelbarrows, and then they will be maneuvered

back to the area surrounding the columbarium.

    Pouring and finishing the concrete

    Summary

The base has been prepared, so the concrete is ready to be poured.

    Tools Required

Shovel, hoe, float, edger, trowel, brush

    Materials Required

    Concrete, 2x4 - screed board

    Process

The concrete will be poured from the wheelbarrows and into the forms until they are

approximately three-quarters full. From there, the concrete will be shoveled in by hand. A

shovel or a hoe will be used to distribute the concrete evenly throughout the form, especially in

the corners and along the edges.

Once the form is full, the excess concrete will be struck off using a screed board. The

board will be placed across and perpendicular to the longest sides of the form. Two helpers will

hold the board firmly against the top surface of the form. They will maneuver the board in a

back-and-forth motion. This process will be repeated until the entire surface of the concrete is

    level.

Next, helpers will use a wooden float to smoothen the surface of the concrete. The

leading edge of the tool is held up at a slight angle while it is swung in a circular direction.

Floating will continue in this manner until the surface is fairly smooth and rocks and tool marks

are no longer visible. The concrete will now be cut away from the forms using an edging tool.

Helpers will run the tool along the sides of the form to compact the concrete away from them.

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    7/10

    Final Project Plan 7/10

The concrete must now sit and wait while the surface moisture evaporates. Depending

upon the weather conditions and the moisture level of the mix, the setting time can vary from

    thirty minutes to three hours.

Finally, a trowel tool will be used to polish the surface of the concrete. Using the same

form and motion as the float tool, the helpers will work back and forth across the surface of the

concrete until the surface is smooth and dense. To finish up, the concrete must again be cut

away from the edges of the forms.

    Cleaning up

The wheelbarrows will be filled with water. A rag will be used to wash off concrete that has

begun to stick to the wheelbarrows and tools. The water will be dumped in the water retention

ravine. Tools, supplies, and any garbage will be collected and brought back to the truck.

    Day 2

    Removing the forms and backfilling

    Summary

The concrete has cured over night, so the forms can now be removed and the dirt can be

    backfilled against the footer.

    Tools Required

Safety glasses, cordless drill, wheelbarrows, shovels, work gloves, garden rakes, hammer

    Process

Helpers will put the cordless drills in the reverse direction to remove all the screws fastening

the form boards together. They will then gently pry each individual form board away from the

concrete and out of the ground until they have all been removed.

Helpers will wear work gloves, locate their shovels, and maneuver the wheelbarrows to

the dirt pile just south of the columbarium. They will shovel dirt into the wheelbarrow until it

approaches full capacity. They will then maneuver the wheelbarrow to a position adjacent to

the forms and then carefully dump the contents into the excavated area surrounding the

concrete forms. They will then use shovels and garden rakes to spread the dirt. This process will

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    8/10

    Final Project Plan 8/10

be repeated until the entire excavated area is level with the existing, surrounding dirt. The

removed forms will be carried back to the truck for disposal.

    Assembling the benches

    Summary

The concrete footers are ready, so the benches are ready to be placed and assembled.

    Tools Required

Caulk gun, dolly, tape measure, utility knife

    Materials Required

    Concrete adhesive

    Supplies Required

Two blankets, duct tape, nylon string

    Process

After being informed of the potential safety hazard of transporting the granite benches, older

Scouts and adults will carefully lower the granite bench pieces from the truck onto a blanketed

dolly. One helper will wheel the dolly from the parking lot to the sidewalk adjacent to the

columbarium. Other adults and older scouts will lift the pieces and place them on the concrete

footers. Both sets of legs will be placed, centered on the footer, and measured to a distance of

twenty inches between the insides of the legs.

The two slabs will be unloaded last from the truck and will be placed on a blanket laying

on the grass near the columbarium. Refer to the bench assembly diagram for this proceeding

step. To assemble the benches as evenly as possible, two pieces of nylon string will be taped

across the shorter distance of the top of the bench slab, each five inches from the edge of the

slab. This will be done again but across the longer distance, and each will be measured away

    from the edge two inches.

Next, the adhesive will be applied to the tops and bottoms of the bench legs. The

concrete adhesive tubes end will be opened with a utility knife. The tube will be placed in the

caulk gun. The adhesive will be applied with a back-and-forth motion across the surface of each

    bench leg.

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    9/10

    Final Project Plan 9/10

Finally, adults and older scouts will lift the bench slabs up to the legs, align the guide

strings with the outsides of the legs, and place the slabs upon them. They will then press

against the tops of the slabs to spread the adhesive.

    Planting

    Summary

The benches have been placed and assembled. Now its on to landscaping.

    Tools Required

    Shovels, work gloves, garden rakes

    Materials Required

    bushes, spray paint

    Process

Using the planting diagram as a guide, a helper will spray paint the locations where the bushes

will be placed. Helpers will wear work gloves as they dig the holes to the appropriate

dimensions specified by each plants instructions. The soil dug out will be placed adjacent to

each hole to be used as backfill once the bushes are placed. The bushes will be removed from

their packaging, placed in their respective holes, backfilled, and then compacted into the soil

with the helpers feet. This process will continue until all bushes are in the ground. Finally, a

garden rake will be used to level the surface of the ground.

    Laying the fabric

    Summary

The bushes are placed, and the ground has been prepared, so its time to lay the fabric.

    Tools Required

    Utility knives

    Materials Required

    Landscaping fabric, garden staples

    Process

Using a utility knife, the landscaping fabric will be removed from its packaging. One helper will

hold the roll, while another holds the other side. It will be unraveled to the length of the area

and then will be cut to fit its shape. Each length will overlap the previous by three inches until

  • 7/29/2019 Eagle Project Plan

    10/10

    Final Project Plan 10/10

all dirt has been covered. One slit will be made in the fabric for every plant so that the fabric

will encompass the plant at ground level. Beginning at the outside corners of each of the areas,

stakes will be inserted into the fabric and the ground every ten feet. They will also be placed

every ten feet on the overlaps.

    Spreading the rock

    Summary

The fabric is installed, so the surface is ready for the river rock. The rock will have been dumped

in the parking lot, so it must be retrieved by wheelbarrow.

    Tools Required

Work gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows, garden rakes

    Materials Required

    River rock

    Process

Helpers will wear work gloves, grab shovels, and maneuver the wheelbarrows to the parking

lot. Theyll shovel up the river rock into the wheelbarrows until they have reached full capacity.

They will then maneuver them back to the area surrounding the columbarium and dump the

contents onto the landscaping fabric. As they return to refill the wheelbarrows, another group

of helpers will wear work gloves and acquire garden rakes to spread the rocks so that they are

approximately an inch above the surface of the adjacent sidewalk. This process will continue

until all the rock has been used and the surface of the rock in all areas is level with the adjacent

    sidewalk.

    Cleaning up

The hose will be used to spray off the parking lot of all rock dust and to thoroughly soak all

planted bushes. Extra gravel will be disposed of in the dirt pile south of the columbarium. Tools,

supplies, and any garbage will be collected and brought back to the truck.
