A Standards-Based Model Program

Focusing on Teaching and Learning

The International Technology and Engineering Educators Association’s STEM Center for Teaching and Learning™

(STEM CTL) has developed the only stan-dards-based national model for Grades K–12 that delivers technological literacy through Integrative STEM-based instruction. The model, Engineering by Design™, is built on Standards for Technological Literacy (ITEEA); Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM); and Project 2061, Benchmarks for Science Literacy (AAAS).

Built on the constructivist model, students participating in the program learn concepts and principles in an authentic, problem-based envi-ronment. A network of teachers (EbD™ Network) has been selected to collaborate and conduct ac-tion research in order to better understand the complexities of student learning and to help all students succeed and be prepared for the global society in which they will grow up.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

Engineering by Design™1. The Engineering by Design program is built on the belief

that the ingenuity of children is untapped, unrealized potential that, when properly motivated, will lead to the next generation of technologists, innovators, designers, and engineers.

2. The International Technology and Engineering Educators Association's STEM Center for Teaching and Learning (STEM-CTL) has developed the only standards based national model for grades K - 12 that delivers technological literacy through integrative STEM-based instruction.

3. EbD is endorsed by the National Career and Technical Education Foundation - States' Career Clusters Initiative.

4. Built on the constructivist model, students participating in the program learn concepts and principles in an authentic problem-based environment.

5. EbD has 15 curriculum guides for K-12 instruction. Two

to three guides get updated each year. All 15 curricula are completely updated during a fi ve-to six-year cycle. (K through fi ve - six guides) - (middle school - three guides) (high school - six guides).

6. State consortium membership makes available, to every school (public and private), the "standard edition" of EbD curricula.

7. State consortium membership provides for "Train the

Trainer" workshops. 8. When a state joins the EbD consortium, schools that

sign the network agreement receive the following benefi ts:

A) Access to online pre-and post-student achievement assessments B) Teacher access to EbD online resources C) "Media Rich" curriculum guides are made available to all network schools.
