I agree there are more teachers around these days; many families new to NZ include one parent who is a teacher and many have applied for work at Edendale as have teachers who come from overseas for an international teaching experience. Many school rolls have also grown over the past few years, our own included, thus schools are staffed accordingly. We‘ve contacted referees for a large number of teachers in the hope of being able to interview a great field but many were not recommended. We have high expectations of teachers we do interview and they must convince us that they have a very good knowledge of the NZ curriculum and a disposition for teaching. Class Sizes: Government Back-down

Wonderful to see a turnaround regarding class sizes last week. We are still apprehensive about changes that may occur in up-coming weeks and months when we learn

more about educational areas where cuts will be made.

PTA Quiz Night - What a wonderful evening!

Thanks to our wonderful PTA for their organisation of

year another amazing Quiz Night, enjoyed by a record number of our community; staff, family and friends. Special thanks to Aamel, Tom, Kathy and the rest of the team for all their organisation, collection of sponsorship (items for the silent auction) and setting up for what proved to be a lot of fun for all who attended. Quality Teachers ... in the news

There has been considerable commentary about the

quality of teachers over recent weeks. This has often been linked to comments about greater teachers numbers having no correlation to improvements in student achievement. I always find such comments interesting. I agree there are more teachers around these days; many families new to NZ include one parent who is a teacher and many have applied for work at

Edendale as have teachers who come from overseas for an international teaching experience. Many school rolls have also grown over the past few years, our own

included, thus schools are staffed accordingly. In 2007 we ended the year with 592 students, 2009 with 639 and last year with 625 so there are always going to be

‗ups and downs‘.

While the teacher: student ratio is set at 1:15 for new

entrant students, numbers across various levels at the school do not mean that there will be only 15 students in a new entrant class. Low numbers in junior classes subsidise higher levels.

I agree that there are teachers with varying abilities around. We have recently re-advertised two positions, one for a third time. We‘ve contacted referees for a large number of teachers in the hope of being able to interview a great field but many were not recommended.

We have high expectations of teachers we do interview and they must convince us that they have a very good knowledge of the NZ curriculum and a disposition for teaching. Not always easy to find such teachers! Our current field of twenty-two applicants includes a number of overseas secondary and university teachers (still in

their home country hoping to emigrate to NZ) and also a military officer from Eastern Europe who also would like to come and live here. Unfortunately, their qualifications and experience do not meet our requirements for

experienced junior class teachers who are familiar with NZ educational settings. We will keep you informed.

Garden to Table PHEEEEW! Please excuse the pongy smell down by the bottom field! Our ‘lucky’ stu-dents dug in bags of sheep droppings in the garden bed at the bottom of the drive. It won’t be without gain though, as we’re planting our garlic cloves here. Garlic being a heavy feeder will love the nutrient rich sheep pellets. When we dig our garlic bulbs up next summer we hope for a bumper harvest! On the sweeter side… We’ve also planted raspberries, kindly donated by Anna mother of Noah in Rm. 15. Garden to Table look forward to using the sweet berries in our cooking classes. A huge number of strawberry plants were planted by Rm. 27 and Citibank volunteers. You may have noticed strawberries in the raised beds opposite the hall. By Christmas they'll be a festive display of gorgeous red strawberries. Thanks to Citibank for their hard work and the donation of a kitchen whiz, it’s been put to good use already. The hard working volunteers were rewarded with freshly baked beetroot muffins, thanks Rm. 27 for your excellent baking skills! Thanks too to Kathy (William and Rosemary's mum) for the strawberry plants. As for the beetroot muf-fins...they were so popular that we continued cooking them through the fortnight along with beetroot dip with flatbread and salad! Top garden art The mosaic artworks to go behind the Endeavour classes are underway. Now we’d like you to bring in more bottle tops - we need 4000!!! Any plas-tic bottle tops are ok - milk tops, cream tops, juice tops, honey tops....the more variety in top colour and size the better. Each one counts, so please ask your children to bring them to the collection box by the Garden to Table shed. Have home harvest to share? Our young garden is slowing down in winter, so we’re harvesting less; but we’d still like our students to use fresh ‘home grown’ produce. Should you have an over-abundance of winter produce such as citrus or beets please bring them in. We’d even take broad beans! Sarah, Jodie and Kim, Garden to Table

EDENDALE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

As part of the Edendale Birthday celebrations Room 18 experienced what it was like being at school in the 1900’s. It came as no surprise that most of the children did not particularly enjoy the experience! They seemed pleased when the ‘role-play’ had

ended. By Matua Alan (Teacher)

I felt frightened when Matua Alan was very strict. By Matteo—Rm18
