Last report sent in January 2016 Chapter activities since last report (January 2016):

● We held regular meetings, throughout the year, between the Chapter members in order to discuss the Chapter activities.

● In 2016 Ignacio López Grande received an Officer Travel Grant to attend Optics & Photonics 2016 in San Diego. He attended the Student Chapter Leadership Workshop, and different conferences.

● We have continued with the outreach event called “Jugando con Óptica y Fotónica” (“Playing with Optics and Photonics”). We started this exposition in 2013 and it consists in showing several experiments of optics and photonics including the study of laser properties, polarization, fluorescence, optical fibers and lenses. The purpose of this event is to promote and encourage the scientific vocation in young students being the first of a series of future outreach events in high schools.

● We collaborated in the organization of the 2016 EEOF-TOPFOT (Optics and Photonics

Student’s Meeting - Workshop on Optics and Photonics). This is a four-day activity program for graduate and undergraduate students, young researchers and professors from the whole country. It took place in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, from May 16 to May 19. The topic of the meeting was “Optics and Photonics applied to Engineering”. We had 60 attendants. We provided undergraduate students with financial support to attend the meeting, covering both travel and accommodation expenses for 19 students. During the first two days we organized a short intensive school only for graduate and undergraduate students about the basics of Nonlinear Optics in Communications, Self-mixing Interferometry, Ionizing Radiation Effects on CMOS Circuits, among others. For that matters, six experts gave lectures about the basic theory and their own experiences in the subject. The other two days, we attended several short lectures related to the topic of the meeting but this time with the presence of professionals and researchers. The third day in the evening we held a Poster Session for students and young researchers. This meeting has strengthened the bonds between researchers and students working in optics, photonics and related areas. Students from all over the country shared their work during the poster sessions. During the meeting we shared both academic and non-academic activities. We consider that this event is the most suitable meeting point for local students helping them to initiate and develop their careers, and get in touch with each other.

● During 2016 we started with a new series of meetings “JORNADA JOFA”. This meetings are planned to strengthen the networking among students from the optics and photonics community. We think that closer interactions between students rather than senior researchers is an effective way to reinforce this community. The activity lasts a whole day and consist in short talks from students and young researchers in a relaxed atmosphere, a lunch for gathering and discussion and a final talk to discuss general topics of networking in Argentina. We organized two of this meetings this year (May 3rd and December 2nd) . Both were held on a conference room at the Scientific and Technological Hub in Buenos Aires with more than 45 attendees at each meeting.

● We organize a visit to the C3 (Centro Cultural de la Ciencia , Science Cultural Center) at

Ciudad de Buenos Aires where we saw different interactive experiences related to Physics, Geology, Biology and Neuroscience to get some ideas for further outreaching activities.

Future Chapter Activities:

● New Chapter Officers will be elected on March 2017.

● We will work to incorporate new members to our chapter and to organize meetings to spread the activities, benefits and career development opportunities that SPIE provides its members.

● We are going to organize the 2017 EEOF-TOPFOT workshop in collaboration with the

CIOp-UNLP SPIE Student Chapter. The meeting will take place in Comahue National University, in Neuquen, Argentina. We think this is a way of promoting the knowledge of optics and photonics, facilitate the exchange of ideas and get together students and researchers. The topic of this event will be Optics and Photonics applied to Petroleum and Energies.

● We are planing to do two “Jornada JOFA” meetings. We will try that at least one of them

take place outside the Buenos Aires City, to encourage the participation of students living outside Buenos Aires.

● We will continue our outreach program “Jugando con Optica y fotonica” bringing several

experiments to primary and high schools in the city of Buenos Aires in order to grow their interest in science and engineering and to spread optics and photonics among the new generations.

● More “Pizza Meetings” and “mate meetings” are going to be organized for the UBA-SPIE
