Reading and Wring at ISM

This morning we held our third quarter assembly for 2015/16 and

had the pleasure of a number of guest readers playing a starring

role in ‘Dear Fairy Godmother’ by Michael Rosen and Nick

Sharre. Our purpose, as always, is to model a love of great

literature for our community and a sense of fun that comes with

reading great stories. One of the cornerstone research papers

which we have used to construct some agreements about what

the daily reading and wring experience in our Elementary School

is at ISM, is ‘Every Child, Every Day’ by Richard Allington and

Rachel Gabriel (2012). In it, they outline six research based

elements which our students should experience, every day. They

are:

1. Every child reads something they choose.

2. Every child reads accurately.

3. Every child reads something they understand.

4. Every child writes about something personally meaningful.

5. Every child talks with their peers about reading and wring.

6. Every child listens to a fluent adult read aloud.

From these statements we have craed a set of literacy

agreements for our students, which we use to guide their daily

reading and wring experience at ISM and our teachers

planning. They are:

So, if you happened to be in the Fine Arts Theater this morning and see a Fairy Godmother, a wolf, lile red riding hood, a

rabbit, a tortoise or various other characters on stage, please know, there was some method to the madness taking place

Aligned with this madness, we are honored to once again be joined by leading literacy consultant Kathy Collins over the

next week. She is the author of ‘I Am Reading: Nudge Children to Make Meaning and Engage Joyfully With Any

Book’ (Heinemann, 2015), in addion to various other books on literacy development. Kathy has worked closely with the con nued on page

Teachers College Reading and Wring Project at Columbia University, and was a teacher in Brooklyn, New York. She

will be spending four days in our classrooms, co‐planning and teaching with our teachers on certain aspects of reading

and wring, as well as conducng two full days of learning this weekend, with over 100 teachers at ISM. Next Tuesday

morning, from 7:45 to 9:00 am in the Lile Theater, Kathy will be hosng a parent coff ee morning on literacy

development ‐please do join us.

From the ATAC Office

S2 concludes this week with our IASAS teams off to the IASAS

Championships. Good luck to all teams and coaches as they

strive to represent ISM and bring home some medals. Keep in

touch with the Bearcats progress via www.iasas.asia for all live stream and up to date results from host venues. Basketball at

ISKL, Tennis at ISB, Swimming at SAS and Rugby/Touch here at

ISM

ISM is hosng Rugby/Touch due to the bombing in Jakarta two

weeks ago. Thanks to all our community who have stepped up

at short noce to house the 140 athletes that are here com‐

peng this weekend

Come on out and watch the acon.

Well done to our varsity girls basketball team who placed 2nd at

the Hardeman Cup this past weekend. They also placed 2nd in

the local league final vs Chang Kai Shek played last Monday evening.

Also congratulaons to the MS boys rugby team who placed 2nd

and the JV green and gold rugby teams who placed 3rd and 2nd

in the PSL local rugby finals on Saturday. A great day of rugby

for ISM teams.

Season 3 (S3) tryouts will begin first week of Feb, announce‐

ments are now posted on noce boards and on ATAC blog

schedules page for tryouts and the season pracce schedules.

ATAC S3 sports for MS are Badminton, Track&Field, Mixed Touch and Co‐ed Soball. For HS S3 sports are Golf, Track&Field, So‐

ball and Badminton.

Congratulaons to our VGirls Touch and VBoys Rugby teams who both won their local league compeons last weekend. A great

eff ort all season from players and coaches.

A few reminders from Operations and Security

Access and parking within the campus are important security and safety issues. For the well‐being of all members of the ISM com‐

munity, those entering the school campus are requested to take note of the informaon and procedures outlined below.

Vehicular Access

During drop‐off and pick‐up mes, vehicles may enter the campus through Gates 2 and 3. Those entering through Gate 2 should

proceed to the drop off area and, once the student has alighted or boarded, they should exit via Gate 1. Those vehicles entering

through Gate 3 must turn into the covered parking area and use the designated drop‐off areas. All vehicles must exit through Gate

1.

Please note that Gate 2 may only be used by those drivers and passengers who have an ISM ID card and who are in a vehicle dis‐

playing a valid ISM vehicle scker.

Alternavely, vehicles entering through Gate 3 may park in the covered car park. The spaces reserved for parent‐driven cars

should only be used by those vehicles which are driven by parents themselves. Vehicles in which parents are traveling, but which

are driven by a driver, should not use these spaces. Rather, they should park elsewhere in the covered car park or make use of the

outside spaces next to the power center.

Visitors to ISM must enter through Gate 3. There is an area for short‐stay visitor parking near Gate 1.

The Pedestrian Gate

The pedestrian gate is located in the perimeter fence mid‐way between Gate 1 and Gate 2. There is a paved area between the

road and the perimeter fence, allowing easy access to the gate. The pedestrian gate is solely for the entry of members of the ISM

Community at the beginning of the school day. It will only be open between 7:00 am and 7:45 am (8:00 am to 8:45 am on

Wednesdays). Due to parking restricons, and in the interests of security, it will not be open in the aernoon for pick‐ups. During

the me it is open, it will be under the supervision of members of the ISM Guard Force.

Drivers

should

stop

adjacent

to

the

paved

area

and

students

should

alight

from

the

right

side

of

their

vehicle.

The

driver

should

then move off , clearing the space for other vehicles dropping off students. Under no circumstances should a student be dropped

off from the middle lane. This is dangerous as the student would need to walk in front of another vehicle. Drivers are reminded

that traffic regulaons forbid parking on the roads around ISM. Therefore, vehicles should only be stopping for the brief me it

takes for a student to alight. Drivers must not wait for anybody to return to the vehicle.

ID Cards

ID cards should be worn at all mes while on campus. If you have not been issued an ID card, or you have lost it, you should obtain

one by vising the security office and compleng the appropriate applicaon form.

Vehicle Checks

The pracce of inspecng vehicles will connue. During off‐peak hours, all vehicles will be checked before they are allowed to en‐ter the campus.

During peak hours (drop off and pick‐up mes), all vehicles without valid sckers and randomly selected vehicles with sckers will

be asked to undergo an examinaon.

Whether an examinaon is conducted or not, it is important that the security staff at the gates are able to idenfy the occupants of

vehicles entering the campus; therefore IDs must be clearly displayed. Vehicles with nted windows must roll down windows to

allow a clear view of the interior of the vehicle.

Drivers, Helpers and Bodyguards

Drivers, helpers and bodyguards should not wait on campus for students throughout the school day. Aer dropping off students

they should exit the school grounds and not return earlier than 30 minutes before dismissal me. Those who repeatedly fail to

comply with the regulaon will have their access privilege suspended.

Only those vehicles carrying parents or other people with business within the school will be allowed to return to the campus before

the scheduled pick‐up me.

There are designated areas for unaccompanied drivers, yayas, helpers and security escorts to wait for parents and students. Unless

specifically authorized, they may not enter any other area. In the interest of security, and to prevent congeson at the pedestrian

entrances to the covered parking area, parents are requested to emphasize to their employees the importance of cooperang with

the security staff and remaining in the appropriate areas.

Terminaon of Employment

In the event of the terminaon of service of a family employee, parents are asked to secure the former employee’s ISM ID card and

return it to the

Security

office.

If this

is not

possible,

it is important

that

the

Security

Office is sll informed

of the

change

of circum

‐

stances.

Firearms

All members of the ISM community are reminded that it is strictly forbidden for firearms to be brought onto the campus. This in‐

cludes concealed weapons carried by bodyguards for close protecon. Any person arriving at the school with a firearm should in‐

form the gate guard, and arrangements will be made for the weapon to be safely and securely stored during the visitor’s stay.

Security Staff Direcons

Our security team is endeavoring to make the school as safe and secure an environment as possible for all members of our commu‐

nity.

We ask that everybody cooperate with us in this important task. In parcular, all those entering our campus are requested to com‐

ply with any direcons given to them by members of our guard force.

If you are confused or unclear as to the purpose of such instrucons, please seek clarificaon from the security office. Please note

that it is the parents’ responsibility to advise their staff accordingly.
