The title of this publication was chosen by participants, volunteers and staff
reminding readers of the need to LISTEN to one another.
Siempre Bella, Siempre Informada
anual, Siempre Bella, Siempre Informada.
incluyendo Rush University Medical Center, Proyecto VIDA, Monte Sinai

On May 10th, Universidad Popular’s 8th annual health fair, Siempre Bella,
Siempre Informada, or Always Beautiful, Always Informed, helped
hundreds of community residents get preventative health screenings and
information. Thanks to all the partners who contributed, including Rush
University Medical Center, Project VIDA, and Mount Sinai Institute, we
were able to provide vision screenings, glucose tests, blood pressure, BMI,
HIV screening, and information about diabetes and nutrition, breast
cancer screening, and more. Alternative health services such as
massage and chakra alignment were also available.
Perhaps the most popular booths were those that allowed women to feel
beautiful just in time
for Mother’s Day.
Professional haircuts,
styles, manicures,
and facials are often
so expensive that
many women in our
community can’t
afford to take
advantage of them, but UP’s health fair is a
day when anyone and everyone can partake
of these luxuries free of cost. Thanks to Cannella
School of Hair Design and other providers,
dozens of women took advantage of these
services, many of whom never had before.

Chicago Lawn Site celebrates Children’s Day by Lilia Segoviano, Chicago Lawn Site Coordinator
Universidad Popular at Chicago Lawn held three days of Interactive Literacy Activities for
Families during Spring Break. These three activities were created to have the whole family’s
participation in learning. Participants from the program
led the activities with games, arts and crafts, reading
sessions, writings and plays. April 14th was focused on
family communication and technology, and April 15th
was about nutrition. The families created healthy meals to
share with their children. The last activity was a
celebration of CHILDREN'S DAY!! The children at Chicago
Lawn were very happy. One participant shared, “My
children woke me up to take them to the activities, they
were waiting for days to be there participating. They
enjoyed all the games and the arts and crafts they
learned. They couldn’t sleep the night before because
they were excited about the activities.”
woman who has spent her whole life
serving others was very surprised and
delighted by the experience of having
someone wait on her. Another had never
had a massage and was moved to tears
as she learned to relax and let another
person take care of her.
Over 250 people came to UP to learn,
enjoy, and take responsibility for their
health and the health of their families at
Siempre Bella, Siempre Informada. While
the event is centered around women and
mothers, many husbands, partners, and
children came to enjoy the event as well.
It was a great success for UP’s Health Literacy Initiative (HEALIN). For more information on HEALIN
events and activities, contact Olivia Ramirez at [email protected].
A big thank you to Rush University Medical Center for their
participation in our Health Fair for three years running!

Interview with the Writer
What’s your name?
Litzi Arias
What school do you go to?
Gary School, 7th grade
What’s your favorite thing about UPrising?
Cooking class with Daisy. The best thing we made so far was fruit
pizza.
What’s your favorite thing about Little Village?
People are always working together as a community. Outsiders
always say bad things about Little Village, and the people here
try to prove them wrong.
What are you looking forward to this summer?
Playing soccer with the UPrising team. I think we’re gonna be pretty good!
In cooking class, we learn
to make different types of
food. Everyone has a dif-
ferent role in the kitchen - some are cutting the
vegetables, mixing the different ingredi-
ents, boiling and cleaning. Everyone works to-
gether as a team to prepare the food. “I was never taught to cook until I decided to join this activity,”
said Rene Mendoza. Daisy Tellez is our facilitator during this activity, and the thing we like most about
her is her patience. She teaches us how to cook food from many different places and cultures. That
way we'll try new and different things. She is able to explain everything step-by-step, and makes cook-
ing very engaging. Last month, we learned to cook Vietnamese spring rolls, chipotle chicken pasta
and seaweed sushi rolls and Mexican sushi.

Youth Leadership Council
Then there's youth council, which allows us to represent our voice
and advocate for our community. Every week, youth council
meets up to discuss our plan and the weekly objectives. We have
discussed many topics, including leadership and what are good
leadership skills. We agreed that a leader is respectful and leads
people into the right path. We have been planning how we could
have more lights outdoors for safety. We created a project to take
action as part of the 22nd
Ward Participatory Budget-
ing (PB22). Youth council
members have gone to
monthly meetings and they
did video interviews on why
more lights would help our
community. Our goal is to have better lightning down on 28th
street for the safety and better welfare of our community.
UPDATE: After the PB22 Community Voting, the first place pro-
ject was to add spotlights around the community, including
28th street, which was one of the projects our Youth Council
members were fighting for!

UPrising Soccer Clinic
by Stiven Gonzalez, UPrising participant, age 14
On Friday, April 18th, UPrising hosted a soccer clinic for younger kids at Gary Elementary School. It was
fun to work with youth from my community. It was a good experience because it was my first time
playing and training with little kids. I loved that kids were listening to me and I noticed that they really
wanted to learn and become better soccer players. At times it was hard to get their attention, but I
understand they are little kids and they get distracted fast. I have never seen a soccer clinic hosted in
Little Village. We don’t have coaches that teach the fundamentals to kids. Most kids learn everything
by playing soccer in the streets and usually older players guide them. UPrising’s clinic was a good op-
portunity to learn basic skills and participate in the community.

Overcoming Barriers to Success
habilidades. Familia Vazquez.
The Overcoming Barriers to Success program strives to inform and educate community residents of the
services available to people with special needs through the Department of Human Services – Division of
Rehabilitation Services. In addition, it equips disabled participants with skills and self-confidence to both
succeed in the workplace and to enrich their community, their family and themselves by overcoming any
barrier they may have due to their disability.

My family reached out to UP for me wondering about help for disability, but it somehow turned into a
volunteer gig. I have been able to teach all the things I learned in college to so many people and it
got the thought in my head that I could show more people in this community, you know, save them
money by not going into the same kind of debt. I have so much debt and I want to make sure no one
else falls into the same kind of trap I do.
Being here has lifted my mood and it is teaching me to be a better teacher. I am starting to get
involved with more events but would really like for more people to join our classes. Just imagine if
more people in the neighborhood knew how to make a website, design, and photography. I’ve seen
the streets, there is so much talent out there that should be publicized. With the kind of talent around
here I’m sure we can create design circles and startups that people around the world will flock to.
As an Overcoming Barriers for Success participant, Jorge Acosta got enrolled in the program because of an
accident that resulted in a physical impairment. When he came to the program, his family was worried about his
emotional status, because Jorge was depressed, with nothing to do other than applying and looking for jobs
(without any success) and to continue improving his computer program knowledge. Now Jorge Acosta is in the
process of being connected with a job opportunity through the DHS/DRS placement services and here he describes
becoming a volunteer through Universidad Popular, getting him out from the shadows to serve the community.

Peace, Block by Block by Cesar Lara
Spring is finally here and Universidad Popular’s Learning To Suc-
ceed (LETOS) participants decided to take action to live in a
safe, peaceful and clean community. On April16th 2014, the
morning program and the youth program participants got to-
gether to clean the streets surrounding Universidad Popular.
This is one of the positive initiatives to make sure our community
is a clean place for everyone. As our mothers often tell us:
“¡Podemos ser pobres, pero limpios!” We can be poor, but we
have to be clean! A clean neighborhood reflects a community
that cares, while garbage
and rubbish everywhere in-
spire fear, neglect and
crime.
The day started with a gath-
ering in each class to wel-
come participants’ children to Universidad Popular and get to
know them, using the time to practice our English. At ten o’clock
we got together as a site and divided the cleaning supplies.
When we got outside, 22nd Ward Alderman Ricardo Muñoz greet-
ed everyone and shared bottles of water with our participants.
Mr. Muñoz highlighted the importance of Universidad Popular’s
community engagement, and the participation of all the fami-
lies.
At the end of the activity participants saw the results of their work
and they were very proud of it. Thanks to everyone that made this event possible, special thanks to
the office of Alderman Muñoz for their help with the cleaning supplies and for picking up the gar-
bage bags after the event! Peace will be achieved with our actions, piece by piece.

Paz, Paso a Paso por Cesar Lara
Finalmente llegó la primavera a Chicago
y en Universidad Popular los participantes
del programa Aprendiendo a Triunfar
decidieron tomar acción para vivir en un
vecindario seguro, con paz y sobretodo
limpio.
