PERSPECTIVESThursday, 13 October, 2011
Disseminate agriculturalknowledge
In Myanmar, the majority of thepopulation is farmers residing in rural areas, most of whom are engaged in agriculture andmeat and fish production industry. Rural regionproduct development and economicdevelopment play a major role in economicgrowth of the nation.
As the nation’s economy is based onagriculture, agricultural development of ruralregions, increased income of rural folks andpoverty reduction have become top priorities.
Agriculturalists and farmers will have towork in tandem for improvement of socio-economy of rural folks, poverty alleviationand agricultural development. Agriculturalistson their part will have to make furtherresearches on high yielding strains of rice aswell as other crops beneficial to farmers interm of income.
But mere distribution of high yieldingstrains will not work and technician staff willhave to widely disseminate cultivation methodsto the workplace of farmers enabling them toapply agricultural methods skillfully.
Nowadays, modern mechanized farmereducative farms have emerged along withvegetable and fruit nurseries, standing as avaluable resource for farmers. Agriculturalistsand farmers are to make collaborative effortsfor wide dissemination and application ofcultivation methods contributing to agriculturaldevelopment.

Mushroom compound boosts cancer drugWASHINGTON, 12 Oct—A compound from a wild,
poisonous mushroom growing in the southwesternChina’s forests, imparts greater punch to a cancer-busting drug, new research shows.
The compound, verticillin A, sensitizes cancercells to TRAIL, a drug, causing cancer cells to self-destruct, said Kebin Liu, cancer immunologist atthe Georgia Health Sciences University CancerCentre and study co-author.
The compound pre-empts cancer cells fromdeveloping resistance to TRAIL (tumor necrosisfactor-related apoptosis inducing ligand), reports
the journal Cancer Research.Drug resistance, intrinsic or acquired, is a major
problem for cancer patients, accounting for morethan 90 percent of treatment failures. “If we canmake drugs work again, more people will survive,”Liu said, according to a Georgia Health statement.
“It looks as though most cancer cells havefound a way to become resistant and evade itsaction,” said Wendy Bollag, cell physiologist andLiu’s counterpart in the study. Tenacious cancercells are also naturally resistant to cell suicide, which is how TRAIL works.—Internet

Each time disaster strikes, nature is oftenblamed. Rarely do we think about human actionsthat increase risk and turn danger into catastrophe.
Vulnerability to disaster is growing fasterthan resilience. Over the past year, we have seendevastating floods, earthquakes, tsunamis anddroughts.
Nuclear safety and the threat of multipletechnological hazards add even greater urgency.
The good news is that some countries haveshown how to reduce risk from floods andcyclones. Investments in early warning andother measures are paying dividends.
Yet the economic burden of technologicaldisasters continues to grow. Making the case forinvestment in risk reduction can be an uphillstruggle. Yet much can be gained from spendingwisely rather than spending more.
This year’s observance of the InternationalDay for Disaster Reduction recognizes the vitalrole of children and young people.
In Nepal and elsewhere, schoolchildren aretaught the basics of home and building safety.
Risk reduction and climate change adaptationactivities involving children in Cuba are nowbeing emulated in other parts of the world.
Most recently, more than 600 African, Asianand Latin American young boys and girlsdeveloped a Children’s Charter to reduce disasterrisk.
The message is clear: Disaster risk reductionshould be an everyday concern for everybody.
Let us all invest today for a safer tomorrow.UNIC/Yangon

Massive stars could be behind cosmic fog of
early universeWASHINGTON, 12 Oct— High energy light from
massive stars could have been responsible for theopaque and dense fog between galaxies in the earlyuniverse, new observational evidence shows.
Astronomers believed that early star-forminggalaxies could have provided enough of the rightkind of radiation to evaporate the fog, or turn theneutral hydrogen intergalactic medium into thecharged hydrogen plasma that remains today. Butthey couldn’t figure out how that radiation couldescape a galaxy. Until now.
Jordan Zastrow, a Ph D astronomy student, andSally Oey, a U-M astronomy professor, observedand imaged the relatively nearby NGC 5253, a dwarfstarburst galaxy in the southern constellationCentaurus.
The researchers used special filters to see whereand how the galaxy’s extreme ultraviolet radiation,or UV light, was interacting with nearby gas. Theyfound that the UV light is, indeed, evaporating gas inthe interstellar medium. And it is doing so along anarrow cone emanating from the galaxy.
“We are not directly seeing the ultraviolet light. We are seeing its signature in the gas around thegalaxy,” Zastrow said.
In starburst galaxies, a superwind from thesemassive stars can clear a passageway through the gasin the galaxy, allowing the radiation to escape, theresearchers said.
The shape of the cone they observed could helpexplain why similar processes in other galaxies havebeen difficult to detect.—Internet

Antarctic lake mission targets life andclimate signs
Ocean trawlreveals
‘megavirus’LONDON, 12 Oct — The
largest virus yet discov-ered has been isolatedfrom ocean water pulledup off the coast of Chile.Called Megaviruschilensis, it is 10 to 20times witder han the aver-age virus.
It just beats the previ-ous record holder,Mimivirus, which wasfound in a water coolingtower in the UK in 1992.Scientists tell the journalPNAS that Megavirusprobably infects amoebas,single-celled organismsthat are floating free in thesea. The particle measuresabout 0.7 micrometres(thousandths of a milli-metre) in diameter.
"It is bigger than somebacteria," explained Pro-fessor Jean-MichelClaverie, from Aix-Mar-seille University, Mar-seille, France. "You don'tneed an electron micro-scope to see it; you can seeit with an ordinary lightmicroscope," he told BBCNews.
Viruses cannot copythemselves; they need toinvade a host cell if theywant to replicate.
Like Mimivirus,Megavirus has hair-likestructures, or fibrils, onthe exterior of its shell, orcapsid, that probably at-tract unsuspecting amoe-bas looking to prey onbacteria displaying simi-lar features.

The Burlington Junior School in Bridlington, England, which previouslyattempted to replace hand raising with the raising of colored signs, recentlyannounced students are being encouraged to put up their thumbs instead ofraising their hands to get the teacher’s attention, The Sun reported Tuesday.
Headteacher Cheryle Adams described the policy as not a “big deal” and“something all the children have accepted.”
“These ideas help make the class environment calmer and encouragesquieter pupils to share ideas,” Adams said.
However, Dave Campleman, 44, who has two children at the school, saidhe does not agree.
“I thought it was a joke at first,” he said. “It’s daft. Kids are used to puttingtheir hands up — being told to do something different just confuses them.”
