Soon, wonder drug to make cancer cells‘commit suicide’
LONDON, 15 Nov —Scientists claim to have come up with radical new drugthat will make cancer cells “commit suicide” and may also prove highlyeffective in wiping out some of the most deadly forms of the disease.
The wonder drug will bring fresh hopes to patients with aggressive anddeadly tumours and could also prove highly effective against other, lessvirulent, types of cancer.
The added bonuses of the treatment, which would be delivered in pillform, is that it has very few side effects and tumorous cells are unlikely tobecome resistant, as is the case with current therapies.
According to Professor David Cheresh and his team from the School ofMedicine at the University of California, San Diego, the drug “blocks thefunction of proliferation” and the malignant cells commit suicide when theycan’t multiply.
The KG5 drug, which has proved effective tests against pancreatic, breastand kidney cancers, works by stopping tumorous cells from multiplying andthey then shut themselves down. According to the research, KG5 works in atotally different way as compared to traditional therapies by altering thestructure of a cancer growth protein, an enzyme known as RAF.
Existing treatments block RAF’s activity, but KG5 changes the entireshape of the protein, which neutralises it without leading to unwanted side-effects.
“Before this drug was designed, we had no idea RAF could promotetumour cell cycle progression,” the Daily Express quoted Cheresh as saying.
“This may be only one example of how, by designing drugs that avoidthe active site of an enzyme, we can identify new and unexpected ways todisrupt the growth of tumours.
“In essence, we are attacking an important enzyme in a whole new wayand thereby discovering new things this enzyme was intended for,” he said.
The study has been recently published online in the Nature Medicinejournal.—Internet

Sugar-sweetened beveragesmay increase cardiovascular
risk in womenWASHINGTON, 15 Nov—
Drinking two or moresugar-sweetened bever-ages a day may expand awoman’s waistline and in-crease her risk of heart dis-ease and diabetes, accord-ing to research findingspresented Sunday at theAmerican Heart Associa-tion’s Scientific Sessions2011. In this study, re-searchers compared mid-dle-aged and older womenwho drank two or moresugar-sweetened bever-ages a day, such as carbon-ated sodas or flavored wa-ters with added sugar, withwomen who drank one orless daily.
Women consumingtwo or more beverages perday were nearly four timesas likely to develop hightriglycerides and were sig-

Thesame associations werenot observed in men.“Women who drank morethan two sugar-sweeteneddrinks a day had increas-ing waist sizes, but weren’tnecessarily gainingweight,” said ChristinaShay, lead author of thestudy and assistant profes-sor at the Universityof Oklahoma HealthSciences Centre.

It is the first timepatients have been givenan infusion of their own
cardiac stem cells inthe aim of solving theimpact of heart failurerather than simply treatingthe symptoms of it.
Stem cells are infantcells that develop into thespecialised tissues of thebody.
They have sparked
great excitement as theyoffer hopes of rebuildingorgans damaged bydisease or accident.
The index used forcardiac health is calledthe left ventricular ejectionfraction (LVFV), whichcalculates the capacity ofthe left ventricle to expelblood in the space of aheartbeat.
For a person innormal health, the LVFVis 50 percent or higher.
Among the study
patients, though, this hadfallen to 40 percent orlower. At such a threshold, shortness of breath andfatigue are chronic andoften disabling.
The stem cells wereisolated from a coronaryartery that had beenremoved when thepatients underwent acoronary bypass. Scansof the patients’ hearts alsoshowed a reduction in thearea of tissue that had beenscarred by the infarction,
a discovery thatchallenges conventionalbelief that once scarringoccurs, heart tissue ispermanently dead.
The volunteers alsoreported a substantialimprovement in qualityof life, and there were nosignificant side effects.
Seven patients withsimilar heart problemswere enrolled as“controls”, to serve as acomparison. There wasno change in their LVFV,in scar tissue or in theirquality of life.—Internet
