Dear Family,During the next four weeks, we will be learning about

thoughtful choices, smart choices, healthy choices, safe

choices, and kind choices. Children will begin to consider and

evaluate the pros and cons of their actions as they make

decisions. They will learn about the importance of maintaining

healthy eating habits, daily exercise, strategies for relieving

stress, and regular visits to the doctor and dentist.

Our character education focus will be on developing the concepts of fairness and confidence.

LiteracyWe will learn to sing this little song by Pam Schiller. It reminds us that when we have a choice to make, we need to think it through.

Choices Tune: “Itsy Bitsy Spider”

When I have a choice I know just what to do.I don’t jump right in. I stop to think it through.I think about what’s safe. I think about what’s fair. I think about what’s helpful. I show that I prepare.

MathChildren will continue to practice one-to-one correspondence, learn about geometric shapes, and count. Since we can describe the attributes of different objects, we will begin to notice patterns. At home, point out a pattern (a row of big and little books that you have arranged) and say: Look at the books—a big book, a little book, a big book, a little book, a big book, a little book. Do the same things repeat over and over? Do you see the pattern? Touch each book as you describe the pattern: big book, little book. Yes, this is a pattern. You see the big books and the little books in the same order over and over. Invite your child to read this pattern along with you. Touch the books and read the pattern aloud.

Estimadas familias:Durante las próximas cuatro semanas vamos a aprender a tomar

decisiones consideradas, deciciones inteligentes, decisiones

saludables, decisiones seguras y decisiones amables. Los niños

empezarán a tomar en cuenta y a evaluar los pros y los contras

de sus acciones antes de tomar una decisión. También aprenderán

la importancia de mantener buenos hábitos alimenticios, de hacer

ejercicios a diario, de practicar las estrategias para eliminar el estrés

y de visitar con regularidad al médico y al dentista.

Los niños seguirán practicando la correspondencia uno a uno, aprenderán lo que son las figuras geométricas y contarán. This little rhyme helps children connect with each other. You may want to use it to reaffirm that the family needs to work together. It is one of Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline activities.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.

(One partner makes a wall and the second places his Humpty Dumpty fists on the wall.)

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

(Wall partner catches the hands of the Humpty Dumpty partner.)

All the queen’s horses and all the king’s men,

(Wall partner massages Humpty’s arms just below elbows.)

Could put Humpty together again.

(Wall partner raises Humpty’s hands, makes them into one fist, and covers the fist with his hands.)

Cooperative Humpty Dumpty

Sit in a circle with your family and hold hands. Family members let their hands drop when Humpty Dumpty falls. When the queen’s horses help, they place their right hands on their neighbor’s shoulders. When the king’s men help, they place their left hands on their neighbor’s shoulders. When Humpty Dumpty is together again, the entire family stands. Family members must work cooperatively to stand without using their hands.

This is a ritual you might want to use as you tuck your child into bed. It is one of Becky Bailey’s I Love You Rituals.

Directions: Hold your child’s hand palm up. Yawn and begin saying the rhyme slowly.

Your fingers are so sleepy.

(Use your free hand to brush over the fingers.)

It is time to go to bed.

First you, baby finger,

(Massage the finger as you tuck the little finger in.)

Tuck in your little head.

Ring finger, now it’s your turn.

(Repeat with ring finger.)

Then comes the tall one, this is just great!

(Repeat.)

Pointer finger, hurry because it’s getting late!

(Increase the speed you use as you recite the words.)

Is everyone here and nestled in?

(Gently rub the knuckles of the four tucked-in fingers.)

No, there is one to come.

(Discover the thumb.)
