October 8 Hope for the Future

GOD’S WATCHERS In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security sys-tems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsi-ble! This profound connection between God’s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today’s Gos-pel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that no-where in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to con-tinue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On Good Friday, at the heart of the Triduum, the commemoration of the Lord’s Passion is col-ored by sobriety and decorum, but this Thursday the mystery comes in a luminous celebration of Christ’s victory. In its deepest origins, the Exalta-tion of the Holy Cross is the feast of a dedication of a church, since in the year 335 the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated on September 13, and on the following day the “true cross” dis-covered by St. Helena was brought outside to the faithful for veneration. It is a great feast of the Eastern Church, which often marks it by having the whole assembly prostrate themselves on the floor honoring the life-giving cross. At the core of the tradition is the quest of Hel-ena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, to ac-quire the cross and the nails of the Crucifixion from the ruins of Jerusalem. When she was satis-fied that she had found them, thanks to the healing of a sick man whose body was placed on the cross, she had her son fund the building of the great basilica. The history of the relic is compli-cated, especially because it was carried off by in-vading Persians in the year 614 and “went miss-ing” for fifteen years. Thursday’s feast does not celebrate the relic, but rather the life-giving cross from which salvation flows. CENTINELAS DE DIOS En el mundo de la antigüedad los centinelas eran gente de gran importancia. Mantenían la seguridad de las comunidades y su deber era alertarles sobre cual-quier peligro o ataque inminente. Antes de que hubiera cerrojos, sistemas de alarma y seguridad, los centinelas eran los protectores, la medida de seguridad. Así que cuando hoy el Señor le encarga a Ezequiel ser centinela, es un cargo de peso. Tan pesado, se nos hace conocer, que si Ezequiel falla y no da la voz de alarma a los que le rodean y ellos mueren en estado de maldad, ¡Ezequiel será el responsable! Este profundo vínculo entre la vo-luntad de Dios en la tierra y en el cielo se repite en el Evangelio de hoy, donde Jesús nos instruye que tene-mos que ser la fuerza de seguridad, los centinelas colo-cados en estado de alerta para que en ninguna parte del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, haya dos miembros del único Cuerpo que no estén reconciliados. La Sagrada Escritura nos dice que Jesús reconcilió todas las cosas en el cielo y en la tierra mediante la sangre de su cruz. Pero se nos da la misión de continuar esa reconciliación en la tierra por medio de nuestros incesantes esfuerzos de ser, como escribiera Pablo, embajadores de reconci-liación. No nos quedemos muy cómodos pensando que nuestra única responsabilidad es mantenernos fuera del camino de la maldad y la discordia. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Durante todo el mes de septiembre se celebra el mes de la herencia hispana. Esta fiesta responde a una presencia hispana que tiene su inicio con la llegada de los españoles a la Florida en 1513, hace 501 años. Los españoles estuvieron en 24 de los ahora 50 estados de Estados Unidos. Eventualmen-te, como bien sabemos, Florida, el Suroeste y Puerto Rico pasaron a manos de los estadouniden-ses. Desde nuestra incorporación a este país hemos ido creciendo en presencia e influencia. La prime-ra obra literaria en español publicada en EE. UU., fue un sermón de don José Agustín Caballero en 1804. En 1808 inició la prensa hispana en EE. UU. con el periódico El Misisipi en Nueva Orleáns. Es-te fue el primero de los medios de comunicación en español en esta nación. En 1822 se eligió el pri-mer político Hispano como representante estatal de Florida. En 1865 la primera oficina para la pastoral ca-tólica entre los hispanos nombró al sacerdote Ga-briel Serrano pastor hispanorium (pastor de los hispanos) en San Francisco, California. En 1970 el sacerdote Patricio Flores fue el primer hispano en ser consagrado como Obispo en y para Estados Unidos. The ACTS Community of Resurrection of the Lord invites and welcomes all women to a

weekend to spend in the midst of our Lord to help find a better life and relationship with Christ. The retreat, being held at the Cordi-Marian Retreat Center here in San Antonio, begins with a sendoff celebration on Thursday October 5th at 6pm in the church family center and ends Sunday October 8th when we return for a Eucharistic Celebration at the 12 noon mass. The cost of the retreat is $170.00. A $25 non refundable deposit must accompany this registration form in order to hold your place on the retreat. The remaining balance of the retreat fee must be paid in full by September 24, 2017.

CCD Registration is now closed. You may go to the office and register to be placed on a waiting list. Confirmation students returning for their second year of Confirmation must come to the office to register and their registration will be accepted. RCIA registration will be open for two more weeks.
