Evaluation question 3

George Griffiths

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Page 2: Evaluation question 3

A film distributor is a company or individual who is responsible for the marketing of a film. The company or individual may set the release date of the film and a method for how the film will be released. E.g. Direct to DVD movies or showing in theatres. It also plans where the film will be shown once it reaches TV.

What is a film distributer?

Page 3: Evaluation question 3

Our film would need a major distributor because of the mainstream audience it is aimed at. Many people enjoy action/comedy films and in order to reach the large audience it must have plenty of adverts on TV, YouTube and social networks, to lead to the spread of hype and excitement for the film.

I feel if I had the choice of distributor for our film, I would choose Universal Pictures as they have distributed a lot of action films, comedy films and the mix of the two, to usual success e.g. Hot Fuzz (which gave us inspiration for our film), Your Highness, Johnny English and its sequel. I also believe that the advertising would be universal (YouTube, Facebook, TV, etc.) because of the mainstream feel of the film itself.

Examples of small budget films that have become a success.

Budget: $500,000–$750,000Box Office: $248,639,099Artisan EntertainmentOne of the main distribution strategy's for the Blair Witch Project was that it was suggested through use of the internet, that the film was found footage of real events.

Budget: $15 millionBox office: $377,910,544Distributed by many different Distributors. This may have lead to its success as it would have gotten a lot of public eye as each distributor may have advertised it differently.

Budget: $400,000Box office: $46,118,099Fox Searchlight and Paramount Pictures. Many people believe this film to be successful as at the time not many of the same sort of films existed (Teen comedies with a certain twist, however now a few more do, which could have been because of this films success)
