Event information for west London

Prudential RideLondon is a multi-award winning world-class festival of cycling developed by the Mayor of London, London & Partners and Transport for London in partnership with Surrey County Council. The event is managed by the London & Surrey Cycling Partnership.

The Prudential RideLondon festival of cycling was a huge success in 2013, becoming the biggest inaugural mass-participation sports event in the world and raising more than £7 million for charity.

This booklet contains important information to help you plan your travel around west London on Sunday 10 August.

What is happening? On Sunday 10 August, 24,000 amateur cyclists will tackle the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, a 100-mile challenge ride on closed roads through London and Surrey. Later that day, 150 of the world’s best professional men will race against each other in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, an extended 200km version of the amateur route, broadcast live on the BBC.

Both events start at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, travelling out of the capital via Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow towards Surrey’s stunning countryside before returning to London for an iconic finish on The Mall.

Only central London (City of London and City of Westminster) will be affected by road closures for Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle on Saturday 9 August.

TravelOn Sunday 10 August there will be an impact on traffic in large parts of London and across Surrey. Roads used by the event will be closed so you’ll need to plan your travel in advance.

Road closures - Sunday 10 August

Event timesAmateur cyclists in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 will be cycling through west London on the outbound route, from Hyde Park Corner to Chiswick Bridge, at 06:30-10:00.

On their return journey towards the finish on The Mall, they will cross Putney Bridge and travel along Chelsea Embankment between 10:00 and 16:30.

Cyclists in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic professional race will reach west London at 13:25 on their way to Surrey. Later in the day and racing to towards the finish, the cyclists will cross Putney Bridge and head along Chelsea Embankment from 17:00.

Please note all timings are approximate.

Road closuresRoutes for the cycling events must be secured and made clear of all vehicles to help ensure the safety of participants, spectators and local residents.

The road closure between Chiswick Bridge to Hogarth Roundabout will reopen following the last amateur cyclist passing around 10:00. The A4 will reopen as far as possible in between the mass participation and professional events.

The professional race will operate on a ‘rolling’ temporary closure on this section of route when the race arrives at approximately 13:25. A short delay should be expected at this time.

ParkingIf you usually park on a road used for the event, please move your vehicle the night before. Vehicles cannot park on the event route from 00:01 on Sunday 10 August. Any vehicle left on the route or parked in a suspended parking bay will be removed from the route.

Sunday parking restrictions will apply on roads adjoining the event routes unless otherwise stated.

Local information

Public transportThere are no planned Tube closures in your area on Sunday 10 August, although some services may be busy with spectators. Some bus services will need to be diverted, temporarily suspended or will terminate earlier than their usual destination as a result of the road closures. Some stops will also be temporarily relocated or suspended.

Some Barclays Cycle Hire docking stations will also be suspended because of their proximity to the event routes.

Please plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. Check www.tfl.gov.uk/prudentialridelondon to find out more about public transport on the day.

Bridges Please note that a number of bridges in central London will be closed until the evening. Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge will remain open all day but may be busier than usual. Hammersmith Bridge is open but is expected to be very busy.

Emergency servicesEmergencies will be treated as a priority in the usual way. If you require the emergency services, call 999. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained and prioritised throughout all of the Prudential RideLondon events. Planning for Prudential RideLondon involves the police, fire and rescue services, ambulance services, local hospitals and other critical welfare services.

On the dayThere will be stewards and volunteers positioned along the route. If you require assistance on the day that is not a 999 emergency, please ask event staff on the ground to help you. Alternatively please contact the helpdesk (0345 8949773).

Pedestrian crossing pointsPedestrian crossing points located along the event route will be under marshal supervision to help you across the road. Usual crossings may be suspended, but an alternative will be signposted where it will be easier to cross. Please be patient during the event and listen to instructions given by stewards and marshals.

Local information

Message from The London Borough of Hammersmith & FulhamHammersmith & Fulham Council is strongly urging residents to plan ahead to avoid road delays and avoid driving in the areas near the event routes on Sunday 10 August.

To avoid delays, wherever possible all drivers are advised to avoid areas near the event routes in the borough as significant delays to journeys are expected. Public transport, walking and cycling will be the best ways to get around during the events. However, some buses will be on diversion or will finish early due to the road closures and Tube stations will be busy.

If you live:

• in the south of the borough, local vehicle access is possible for residents only over Wandsworth Bridge in both directions; however south west London and Surrey will be busy. You will not be able to drive north over Kings Road or New Kings Road during the road closures. • between New Kings Road and the A4, you will not be able to travel south over New Kings Road and Kings Road during the road closures. You will be able to travel north via Fulham Palace Road but this route will be busy.• north of the A4, you will only be able to travel south via Fulham Palace Road and only as far as New Kings Road. Travel in the north of the borough will be possible but you should leave plenty of time for your journey.

Message from The Royal Borough of Kensington & ChelseaMany residents underestimated the impact Prudential RideLondon had last year so we are urging people to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements if necessary.

The Council will minimise any disruption by suspending all planned works on major roads throughout Kensington and Chelsea to help with the wider demands of displaced traffic. However even with these measures in place traffic is likely to be extremely heavy.

There will be restricted vehicle access in the south of the borough. Access and egress for residents who live in the Lots Road area, surrounded by the event route, will be aided by the lifting of the Chelsea Harbour barrier, but again traffic will be very heavy. If you have a special event planned that is likely to be affected, such as a wedding or moving house, it may be possible for the organisers to help facilitate this if you contact them early enough.
