With 12 million on-road miles on its all-electric delivery truck fleet, Smith Electric Vehicles is transitioning from demonstration phase to scale, with the announcement this week of a $35 million joint venture with Hong Kong bat-tery and vehicle producer FDG Electric Vehicles Limited. The JV allows Smith to “go to our partners and say, we have stability, capital, capacity,” business strategy and process VP Terry Pageler tells ShowTimes. Smith’s customers include Coca-Cola, FedEx Express, Staples and Frito-Lay, Smith’s largest customer, whose 88-kilowatt-hour 2012 Smith Newton is on display here

in Booth 1155. It’s one of 265 Smiths in the company’s national fleet, says Mike O’Connell, Frito-Lay senior director of fleet operations. “The trucks have been great. Drivers like them. They meet all our needs.”

The JV trucks will incorporate Smith’s platform, con-trol software and subsystems in a 12,000- to 16,500-GVW range truck with FDG’s batteries. A modular approach will let customers choose battery capacity of roughly 20 to 160 kilowatt-hours, depending on their unique needs, Pageler says. The trucks will be assembled in Kansas City.

A big selling point for hydrogen electric vehicles is their fast fueling. Toyota, which has seized the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle commercialization lead with its Mirai (already on sale in Japan) is planning to offer “free fuel to our first customers,” Toyota Motor Sales fuel cell vehicles brand manager Ed LaRocque told ShowTimes.Details are still being worked out, as U.S. sales of the Mirai don’t begin until October. Toyota (Booth 1137) named eight Northern and Southern California dealerships that will handle the vehicle. Toyota is working with FirstElement Fuel on a California fueling station network.Air Liquide, exhibiting here across the aisle from Toyota at Booth 1036, is to build twelve 700-bar fueling stations in five states along the New York to Boston corridor: New York, New Jersey, Massachu-setts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. First stations are to come online in early 2016.

Powertrain Integration supplies engines including the 8.0-liter ‘PIthon’ that powers the propane autogas S2G from Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. PSI (Booth 419) supplies a range of fuel-flexible engines ranging from .97 liters to 22 liters of displacement.

PSI’s Eric Cohen and PI’s Bob Pachla celebrated the deal at ACT Expo yesterday.

Cummins, Inc. and Agility Fuel Systems said here yes-

terday “that they have entered into a strategic partner-

ship intended to improve the natural gas vehicle user

experience, and to drive adoption of natural gas as a

vehicle fuel for the heavy duty truck and bus markets.”

Cummins, the distribution entity for spark-ignition

natural gas engines from the Cummins Westport joint

venture, is making an equity investment in Agility.

Engineers have already teamed with an eye to heavy

NGVs with better fuel system-engine connections for

improved vehicle performance: integration of software

and hardware between the natural gas engine and the

onboard fuel storage and delivery system.

The two want to bring “a more diesel-like experience

to the natural gas vehicle user,” Cummins on-highway

natural gas business GM Roe East told Fleets & Fuels.

“Our goal has always been to deliver a diesel-like

experience,” said Agility CEO Barry Engle. “This part-

nership with Cummins is a key enabler.”

Agility is at Booth 437. Cummins Westport is at 746.

educational sessions KEYNOTE: WEDNESDAY, MAY 6

Waste Management CEO David Steiner offered attendees a chance to “travel back in time” to hear the lessons that his team has learned since deploying its first CNG refuse trucks in 1992. After starting his keynote with a clever JibJab-style video, he went on to detail how Waste Management had remained committed to reducing its dependence on oil—continuing to invest in trucks, infrastructure, and employee training despite its early adverse experiences with vehicle dependability and the recent drop in oil prices.

Today more than 25% of Waste Management’s fleet runs on natural gas (4,100+ refuse trucks), allowing the company to offset 8,000 diesel gallon equivalents for every NGV, and reducing its CO2e emissions by more than 1.7 million tons. In addition to being a national trailblazer in NGV deployment, the company operates 75 natural gas filling stations and is also leading the charge in renewable natural gas (RNG) market development by converting waste from its Altamont, California, and Milam, Illinois, facilities into natural gas to fuel its fleet.

KEYNOTE: TUESDAY, MAY 5Frito-Lay North America executive Gregg Roden shared his fleet operation’s “performance with purpose” philosophy in front of a packed audience on Tuesday, May 5. The $13 billion convenient foods division of PepsiCo has already eliminated more than 500,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year through its use of nearly 300 electric delivery trucks, 200+ compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks, 650 hybrid sales cars, a growing fleet of propane autogas and biodiesel vehicles, and expanding alternative fueling and charging station infrastructure.

What’s driving their success? According to Roden, it’s the adoption and support from the people on the front lines of their fleet operations—including RSR’s, maintenance staff, and AFV drivers. As he ended his keynote, he asked his several dozen of his staff members seated in the audience to stand, acknowledging that these were the people who truly deserved applause for helping ensure the company was closer to meeting its 2017 goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent.

FEATURED SPEAKER: TUESDAY, MAY 5As ACT Expo 2015 kicked off, attendees had the opportunity to hear from one the greatest American businessmen and arguably the most recognized name in the energy sector —T. Boone Pickens, or the “Oracle of Oil” as he has sometimes been called. With the industry still buzzing about the recent plunge in oil prices, Pickens assured the audience that volatile oil prices only strengthen the business case behind domestic alternative fuels.

“Since 1980, I’ve seen six of these collapses in the price of oil,” shared Pickens, predicting that per-barrel prices would return to $70 by year-end and hit $90 by the end of next year. With domestic natural gas under $4 and predicted to remain low for decades to come, Pickens shared that forward-thinking fleets that stay the course and truly understand the fundamentals of energy will be the most successful over the long-term.
