HELLOmonths of steady progress (sometimes the three steps forward, one step back variety) to get here. In fact, it’s been longer than that if you include the seven years I’ve had this magazine loitering in my head. Finally though, the timing was right.

was called Let’s Stop Poisoning Our Children and it scared the hell out of me. From the very next day I removed every toxic cleaning and personal care product from our house and never looked back.

I also have a terrible memory. Probably like most of you, I have read about harmful toxins found in toothpaste and shampoo. Carcinogenics found in face creams. I’ve got books with a long list of weird numbers and letters representing preservatives

reading this riveting information, I couldn’t tell you a single name of any of those harmful ingredients or recall their side effects. But what I do take away with me is the message that I need to be aware of this information if I am to make the right choices for my family and for me.

I have no experience in publishing or journalism. My children continue to be my priority, with my husband coming a very happy second. But I feel quite passionate

many new skills on this journey, which can only be a good thing.

I’ve kept that original small brochure to remind me why I started on this path. Along with eVoke’s contributors I would like to help give momentum to an awareness that is already sweeping across the world. To take alternative out of the equation and make healthier, more natural lifestyles the mainstream. There are some wonderful local businesses that need a vehicle to promote themselves; somewhere to tell their story and spread their message. If eVoke were to create a small ripple through Perth, that would be lovely.

With the support of our advertisers and contributors eVoke will continue to grow in size each issue and I look forward to getting to know our readers.

Love and happiness,

You’ve probably already taken positive steps in this direction, such as switching to low-energy light bulbs, turning your appliances off at the wall and switching off the second fridge. Here are a few more easy things you can do to make a difference.

But we still have a way to go. The fact remains that Australians are among the highest per-capita emitters of greenhouse gases in the world and households are responsible for more than 20 per cent of the total. When combined with the rising price of electricity, it certainly pays to consider making some easy changes in your home.

AUSTRALIANS are doing great things when it comes to sustainability. Since 2006, we’ve been consuming less energy, sending less waste

less water and breathing cleaner air.

Clean Up Your ActOne of the easiest ways to do both the environment and your wallet a favour is switching to greener cleaning products. Less than 5 per cent of the 75,000 cleaning chemicals used in the developed world have been tested for toxicity. Commercial cleaning products contain many substances that when washed down our drains damage our waterways and make it much harder to recycle water. And they’re expensive – one 500ml container of a multi-purpose spray costs about the same as two litres of vinegar and 500g of bicarb soda. Not only that, but also the vinegar and bicarb combo will last you up to six times longer.

My favourite green cleaning product costs about 50 cents for 500ml and is incredibly effective as an all-purpose spray cleaner. Here’s the recipe: in a clean 500ml spray container, mix three tablespoons of liquid castile soap (try Dr Bronners) with about 20 drops of tea tree oil. Fill the container to the top with water, give it a gentle shake and you’re ready to go with a naturally antiseptic cleaner.

These are just a few simple things you can do to be kind to our environment and save some money at the same time. If you’ve ticked these off your list, then set yourself (or your whole family) a green challenge. Here are some ideas: have one meatless day per week; cycle to school once a week; plant an edible garden; or even go plastic-free! Whatever you decide, make sure it’s achievable and something you can all get behind, and be sure to celebrate when you reach your goal.

More  information:For more great tips on ways to lessen your footprint and save money, check out the government’s Living Greener website at www.livinggreener.gov.au.

Offset Your CarAustralians love their cars and we use them a lot. Transport is by far the biggest percentage of most households’ carbon footprint and road transport accounts for 12 per cent of Australia’s carbon pollution. Although we are using public transport more, it’s also worth having a look at your car and how you use it.

When it’s time for a new vehicle,

hundreds of dollars in fuel costs and it’s much kinder to the environment.

a difference. Take your foot off the accelerator before braking for example, remove extra weight from your car and turn off your car if you’re stopped as restarting uses less fuel than idling.

Once you have reduced your car use as much as you can, then consider offsetting your car’s carbon emissions. To offset, you simply use one of the many online calculators available to work out how much carbon dioxide your car emits in a year. Then, you can pay a reasonable amount (usually less than $100 a year for an average-sized car) to have trees planted in Australia to sequester the equivalent carbon emissions. It’s a great way to reduce

environment at the same time. For

see www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au. To offset your emissions, visit www.carbonneutral.com.au.

Take a Trip to the TipAlthough 99 per cent of Australian households participate in some form of recycling, WA has the worst overall recycling rate in the country. Of particular concern is the rapidly growing category of electronic waste or “e-waste”, such as old TVs, mobile phones and computers.

If you toss your e-waste into your rubbish (even your recycling bin) or leave it on your kerb, it’s likely to end

metals and toxic components. Instead, take a trip to your local resource

so it can be recycled safely.

It might not seem worth the trip just for your one or two pieces of e-waste, but when you consider that in 2008 nearly 15 million devices were sent to

the kids love a trip to the tip! For more information on your local recycling facilities, see www.zerowaste.wa.gov.au or www.recyclingnearyou.com.au.

Have a Happy FridgeYou probably don’t spend much time wondering if your fridge is happy, but if it is, you can save a substantial amount of energy – and money. More than a third of Australian households have more than one refrigerator and refrigeration accounts for a whopping 12 per cent of a household’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Happy  fridges  are:New. Ten-year-old fridges use up to three times the energy of new models. Remember to dispose of your old fridge responsibly by taking a trip to the tip.

Indoors.heat sources such as ovens, heaters and dishwashers.

Well ventilated. Your fridge needs good air circulation so make sure there’s at least 7.5 cm of space around the top, sides and back. Poor ventilation can add as much as 15 per cent to a fridge’s operating costs.

The right temperature. Set your refrigerator to between 3 and 4 degrees Celsius and your freezer to between minus 15 and minus 18 degrees Celsius. Every degree lower requires 5 per cent more energy.

Business may be booming but there are some things that haven’t changed for Dianne since those early days mixing creams in her kitchen.

She still makes her skincare and haircare products by hand and sodium lauryl sulphate, petrochemicals, chlorine and harmful detergents are all still among the absolute no-nos.

She’s also meticulous about the suppliers she deals with.

business took over my four-bedroom house. There were products in the passageway, outside, in the bedrooms and in the shed.”

Dianne’s neighbours offered her the use of half a factory unit in Canning Vale but she soon outgrew that too and now operates from bigger premises next door.

Today there are about 50 Dianne Caine products across six brands, which are stocked in more than 60 outlets across Perth. Dianne has a long list of customers who order online and a rapidly expanding distribution network in the eastern states as well as in Singapore and England.

“I don’t do things in a rush. I wait until I know the time is right,” Dianne says.

In recent years she’s worked with a business consultant on her product branding, coming up with colourful labels and funky names such as ooKoo, YOH and Nutter.

She’s also aware that her customers want to get every last drop of cream, lotion or potion out of the pump bottles and jars.

“Some of the containers have a

upside down. That was another 3am moment,” Dianne says. “Sometimes it’s the silly little things that can make the difference.”

Feedback from customers has helped Dianne shape her business over the years and she’s constantly amazed at how generous they are with their comments, often calling or emailing to say how they’re noticing real results or to suggest ideas for new products.

When Jess, now 26 and a mother herself, underwent surgery on a second brain tumour last year, good wishes poured in from customers and Dianne was prompted to post daily updates on her website.

“If it wasn’t for Jess, I wouldn’t be here doing this, but I’m so glad I am,” she says.

“Over the years I’ve learnt so much and there are so many more manufacturers coming out with better ingredients,” Dianne says. “Everyone knows now that we shouldn’t be breaking coconut down with formaldehyde, for example.”

There is no testing on animals and all Dianne’s products are biodegradable and grey water safe.

“The ingredients I use are softer, gentler and non toxic,” Dianne says. “It’s about doing your homework – and I do lots of that – and making sure you know what the ingredients are and how the manufacturer has processed them.

“If a supplier isn’t open and honest with me about their processes then I don’t deal with them.”

A 12-hour day is routine for Dianne, who is usually in work for 5.30am but who has been known to grab a few hours sleep at the factory unit when working past midnight. Ironically, it’s during the hours of darkness when the 55-year-old has many of her best ideas.

“I have these 3am moments when a new product, a new way of doing something or an idea for new packaging comes to me,” she says.

“The 3am moments are the best. When you’re at the factory unit you’re just getting on with what needs to be done.”

Bowled along by Dianne’s passion, enthusiasm and never-take-no-for-an-answer attitude, the business has grown at its own pace over the years.

The ingredients I use are softer, gentler and non toxic,” Dianne says. “It’s about doing your homework – and I do lots of that – and making sure you know what the ingredients are and how the manufacturer has processed them.

Standing Roll DownAIM: Mobilise and engage the abdominals, free your spine and lengthen your leg muscles with this warm up stretch.

HOW: Stand up straight. Breathe out through your mouth as you nod your chin towards your chest and roll down through your spine while engaging your lower abdominals. Arms hang loose. Move one vertebra at a time as though peeling your spine off a wall. Knees can be slightly bent with the head, neck and shoulders relaxed. Breathe in through your nose and feel the stretch along your spine and backs of your legs. On your next breath out, engage your

! Do not push into the mat through the palms of your hands and relax neck and shoulders. Keep abdominals engaged throughout movement to protect your lower back.

Chest LiftAIM:

HOW: Lie on your back with your hands supporting the base of your head and

letting your lower tummy bulge. Breathe in then exhale as you lower your body to the start position. Repeat 10 times.

What  is  Pilates?PILATES is a unique system of exercise developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates who used it to transform his own health and the bodies of dancers, circus performers and the elite of New York society, including Errol Flynn. Today, everyone from movie stars to ballet dancers and athletes have jumped on the Pilates bandwagon.

So  why  is  it  so  popular?  The controlled, precise movements of Pilates develop long, streamlined muscles, improve posture and aid graceful movement. The method brings

stronger and weaker muscle groups, and between body and mind.

The original Pilates system consisted of a series of 500 exercises. Forty of

specialised equipment with quaint names such as the Reformer, the Wunda Chair and the Trapeze Table.

Pilates equipment uses spring resistance to either assist or challenge your body during movement. Learning equipment-based Pilates requires lessons in

also available in studios and gyms around Perth.

Endota Kakadu Plum Face Mask – $55The name of this mask sounds good enough to eat and I’ll admit it’s what initially attracted me to try it. It’s a deep cleansing clay mask with some extra oomph – in the form of vitamin C-rich kakadu plum and moisturising aloe vera – to moisturise and improve skin tone. It’s more transparent than other clay masks once applied to the skin and dries quickly. Once rinsed off, my skin feels a lot smoother and I found that any small blemishes I had cleared up quicker. Yay! Suitable for normal-oily skin types. Available from www.endotadayspa.com.au

Neals Yard Organic Beauty Oil – $35With so much focus on what we put ON our skin, it’s good to take a moment to remember that what we eat and drink has a big impact, too. Enter Neals Yard Organic Beauty Oil, the perfect blend of Omega 3, 6 & 9 fatty acids (in the form of

primrose and pumpkin seed oils) designed to give you radiant and nourished skin. While the strong nutty taste doesn’t have me jumping for joy when taken on its own, it’s only slightly detectable when blended into a smoothie, stirred into porridge or mixed with orange juice and downed. Two teaspoons a day are all that is required (although it’s recommended to take it for 20 days before judging whether it’s working). I found my skin, memory and mood improved during the course of taking it and would recommend it for anyone who wants a little extra skin radiance boost from the inside out. Naturopathy looks at the whole person, their lifestyle, diet and their physical, mental and emotional state. Besides a thorough case history, a naturopath uses assessment tools such as:

YOUR body has many different enzymes that act like catalysts to perform the chemical reactions that are needed to feed our cells or remove toxins from our cells. They digest our food and make nutrients available for absorption. They make our hormones and neurotransmitters, they detoxify or body, they help make new cells and they allow us to use nutrients to give us energy. In fact, enzymes drive almost everything.

But what happens if those enzymes slow down?

The answer is that we will feel lethargic. We may not sleep well and we may have hormonal disturbances, emotional problems, poor immune functions, low vitality and poor digestion. We may eventually develop disease.

To function properly, our enzymes need minerals and vitamins as cofactors, but they also need the right environment inside the body. If the body is toxic, too acidic or too alkaline, or if the body temperature is too cold or too hot, those enzymes slow down. This can make us feel unwell and can lead to disease.

This is where the holistic approach of a naturopath can help.

results when 649 members of the public were followed over a four-year period. One group was treated with traditional medicine and the other with complementary/alternative medicine. Those under complementary and alternative therapies decreased their hospital admissions by 43 per cent. If they did go to hospital, they decreased how long they were in hospital by 58.2 per cent. They also required 43.2 per cent fewer outpatient surgeries. Most impressive of all was the fact that they decreased their drug usage by 51.8 per cent. That’s got to be good news.

So, what do we need for optimal health?

Good nutrition, exercise, adequate rest, good stress management, a healthy attitude and a properly functioning body are usually the key requirements that we all agree on.

Often overlooked, however, is the importance of an optimally functioning nervous system.

There is unanimous agreement that if a nerve is cut, then there is no way

from getting in while the damaged skin cells are replaced with new skins cells.

Skin cells are replaced naturally within our body every 28 to 32 days. It’s our body that does the healing … from the inside out.

If you have surgery, it isn’t the surgeon who heals you. The surgeon simply removes the part of you that is thought to be affecting the proper functioning of your body. All the healing that takes place after that comes from within your own body.

You do the healing. From the inside, out. In fact every cell in your body has a shelf life and at one point will be replaced by a new cell. Science has suggested that after seven years every cell in your body has been replaced, including your heart cells, bones and other tissues.

As we move away from simply treating symptoms, new science and research is revealing evidence that suggests we can actually get healthier as we age.

Research* by medical doctors in 2004 revealed some very interesting

WHEN it comes to our health, more and more of us are ditching so-called “band-aid” solutions and looking at the underlying cause instead.

We’re asking ourselves: “Why am I suffering this?”.

Rather than accepting that health comes from the outside in – via pills and potions – we’re see health and healing as coming from within us – from the inside out.

Yes, there are still many of us who will have Googled our symptoms before we’ve even reached our GP’s waiting room and are just keen to get our prescription or referral to a specialist. But have you ever heard someone say “I love taking my medication” or “I can’t wait to be taking as many pills as my parents did”? In fact, many of us look at what our parents have done with their declining health and would dearly love to re-write the family medical history.

Would you look at Band-Aids and say that they ‘heal’ cuts and scrapes? Of course not! A Band-Aid merely provides a barrier that prevents further bacteria

Anyone interested in achieving and maintaining optimal health should be assessed by a chiropractor. In fact, anyone with a nervous system should seek a professional assessment by a chiropractor. So who sees a chiropractor? Well, anyone who seeks safe, pain-free alternatives to drugs and surgery should be assessed by a chiropractor.

symbol) and while you’re there, pick up a few bags of sheep and/or cow manure. You want to create a soil that is nutrient rich and able to hold water like a sponge. The perfect structure should hold together when squeezed in your palm, but also fall apart without too much resistance.

Products such as bentonite and zeolite also help greatly with soil structure and water retention, while mulching your garden beds will cut down on excess water use, protect plant roots from drying out and provide plants with some insulation.

A seasonal application of rock dust will help with all the trace elements your garden requires. All these products are 100% organically based so will add elements to your soil naturally, with no nasty, residual chemicals. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. If you work with the soil, you will create a habitat for worms and other essential micro-organisms to exist in. They are the invisible workers that help defend against pests and disease.

want to be able to harvest your crops easily, without tramping through the garden and compacting your soil. If you are setting up raised bed systems, the ideal measurement from front to back should be no more than 1.5m. This allows for easy reach to the centre of the garden bed. The length of your raised bed is up to you, depending on how much space you have.

If you have an existing vegie garden, you will need to make sure it has been cleared. Make sure you remove the entire plant rather than just chopping it off and leaving the root base in the soil as this can harbour unwanted pests and disease and further inhibit your soil health.

Once you have a clear patch, it’s time to work on your soil. Perth is renowned for its lifeless sandy soils that tend to repel water, so it’s really important to add some life. Start by increasing the organic matter in your soil. If you have some well rotted compost add this. If not, I suggest getting down to your local nursery and

timers in the vegie garden. Perth gets lengthy periods of warm weather well into autumn, followed by a relatively mild winter so conditions in the vegie garden tend to be good. There’s less risk of losing crops to extreme heat or to pest and disease attack, which means you’re more likely to achieve good results than if you had started in the spring.

Rejuvenating the soil is the essential precursor to planning and planting your winter vegetable patch and for those of you who have harvested over summer, reinvigorating your soil is also a must. You’ll be rewarded with vegies that not only look and taste better, but also you’ll be proud to show them off to your friends and family.

So, where should you locate your vegie patch if you are just starting out?

Vegetables generally require four to six

Life Coaching? Here’s the heads up...If you can change your thinking you can change your behaviour and, ultimately, you can change your life. words / Gillian Skeer (The Change Agent)

techniques to move closer to their goals or achieve a better work/life balance.

Once a problem has been clearly established, a life coach takes clients through the techniques. Clients then follow instructions from their coach and changes take place at an unconscious level. Clients are empowered, knowing how to use the techniques for themselves should they need them in the future.

By letting go of limiting beliefs and being open to rapid and effective change, it’s possible to achieve amazing results.

So what exactly is a limiting belief?

Basically, a belief is a thought that you have made up. Some are positive and

not necessarily true, or simply may not serve your greater good. Perhaps you tell yourself “I’m not good enough” or “I always mess up relationships”. Perhaps you say to yourself “I’m not good with people” or “If I had more savings then I’d be motivated”.

You probably formed your belief system from an early age when there

We’ve all developed patterns of thinking that affect not only our behaviour but also the results we see in our lives. Some of our behaviours and patterns of thinking do not give us the results we want. Sometimes our old patterns just don’t serve us well any more.

Put simply, NLP techniques help us make changes at a deeper, unconscious level, allowing old patterns to change in favour of new patterns that bring about the desired outcomes.

You can change unwanted behaviours such as anxiety and procrastination, eliminate bad habits such as eating too much chocolate or nail-biting, tackle fears and phobias, resolve inner

1 Drink a green smoothie a day: Green smoothies can literally transform your health and energy levels. They are essentially a blended fruit drink with some green leafy vegies added. Made correctly, they simply taste like fruit and are absolutely delicious. The power of green will clean and heal your body in a multitude of ways.

2 Switch to sprouted breads: If weight or digestion is an issue then

altogether or switching to sprouted breads. The sprouting process not only increases digestibility but it also actually increases the nutrient content of the grain by as much as 80 per cent. In addition, the whole grain is maintained, meaning more nutritious goodies for you.

3 Eat your vegies raw with lunch and dinner: Cooking destroys much of the nutrient content in your vegies so consuming them in their raw state means you’re really maximizing the amount of nutrients in your diet. This means going beyond the carrot sticks and lettuce leaves. There are many amazing raw food recipe books out there that will show you how to put together a fantastic meal using raw vegies. They certainly don’t skip on taste and you’ll be amazed at how delicious the food can be.

1 Kick the food additives and go whole food: So many foods contain food additives these days. Not only do they make more work for your body, but also many have been linked to unsavory health issues. Start reading food labels and avoid anything with numbers, or with ingredients you’ve never heard of or can’t pronounce.

5 Add a superfood to your smoothies: Super foods are like Nature’s supplements, providing your body with powerful antioxidants and concentrated amounts of nutrients. Whether using them to balance the hormones, boost the immune system or

6 Swap the processed sugary stuff for natural sweeteners: Sugar of the not-so-good kind is found in so many foods. Processed sugars can cause a lot of damage in your body. The most obvious one here is the sharp spike and subsequent crash they cause to your blood sugar levels. Swap processed sugars for quality ones such as honey, fresh dates, stevia and maple syrup. These are a lot gentler on the body and at the same time will provide some extra nutrients.

7 Limit or eliminate meat: Research shows that even for meat eaters, having some meat-free meals

Meat takes a lot of energy to digest, hence giving your body a break occasionally can mean more bodily energy for other things. The longest living cultures in the world, such as the Hunza, the Okinawan and the Mediterranean, eat a largely vegetarian diet.

Making just one of these changes will

boosting your energy levels. Adopt them all and your energy will not only skyrocket, you will likely improve existing health issues and create positive long-term results.

DO you ever wish you had more energy? If the answer is ‘yes’, then you probably know what it’s like to push through the day, looking forward to the moment you can throw yourself on the sofa when it’s all over.

No doubt you’ve seen the ads on TV selling pick-me-up solutions for the dreaded 3.30-itus? So you’ll know you’re not alone when it comes to the occasional mid afternoon energy slump, even though for some it seems to last all day.

But did you know that the quality of foods you eat each day and the true health of your body directly impact the kind of energy you have to expend?

Other than being told to keep blood sugars up by choosing low GI foods, the general quality of your diet and state of your health is usually overlooked by a lot of mainstream information.

Low GI doesn’t always mean better energy levels, particularly if it comes in the form of a snack that’s highly

additives. Whatever you put into your body takes time and energy to process and to breakdown into useable components or waste components. Your body must work all the harder when it comes to dealing with foods that are in a less than natural state.

It must also work harder dealing with foods that do not necessarily suit it. How would your car function for example, if each time you put fuel in it you put the wrong fuel in? It would eventually show signs of stress, right? Well, it’s much the same with your body.

There are a few simple things you can do to transform your health, the result of which will be a hearty boost to your energy levels.
