*‘Gold Leaf, Paint & Glass’, by Frances Federer. New publication, with accompanying dvd
to follow in mid September. This pioneering book is the first publication to devote itself to
the methods, techniques and history of reverse painting and gilding on glass, often known as
verre églomisé. It is written for students, artists, collectors, conservators, curators, interested
amateurs, teachers and designers. For further information please contact Frances at Email:

*‘Erwin Eisch. Clouds Have Been My Foothold All Along – Glass and Paintings’. Editors:
Katharina Eisch-Angus, Ines Kohl, Karin Schrott. Munich: Hirmer Publishers, 2012. English-
German edition. 242 p., 150 illus., 24 x 30 cm, hardcover. ISBN 3777451916. ISBN13
9783777451916. Price £45.00. Authors: Helmut Ricke, Katharina Eisch-Angus, Peter Kobbe,
Herbert Schneidler, Ines Kohl, Kevin Petrie, Charles Hajdamach, Tina Oldknow, with
forewords by Joachim Kruse and Sam Herman. “I aim at the living, and for that, glass is
wonderful. It has so many facets. It is brittle and soft, colored and opaque; it goes through
fire for us and can be harder than metal. For the glassblower it is breath and for the painter
it is poetry.” (Erwin Eisch, 1989). “I am thrilled to hear that a book on Erwin's work will be
coming out next year, so very appropriately timed for the celebrations of studio glass.” (Jutta
A. Page, Glass Curator, Toledo Museum of Art, 2011). Erwin Eisch, pioneer of the
International Studio Glass Movement, is a sculptor and painter who’s glass becomes an art
medium. From anti-functional vessels, free-blown sculptures and pop-art assemblages this
book also presents the series of glass busts, of Picasso, Buddha and others. More than 100
works in glass, paintings, drawings and glass prints are illustrated and discussed in
contributions by international scholars. The book fully presents Erwin Eisch’s work and life
philosophy from the late 1950s to the present, with piquant quotations by the artist. It both
informs on an art level as well as carrying the authentic voice of Erwin Eisch, a very
charming and challenging read. To order: Email: [email protected] Fax: 00 49 89

Deadline 01/12/12 - Information For Applicants: International Exhibition ‘Bodytalk’, Open
Call, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft. Ebeltoft Glasmuseet is proud to announce an open call for an
international group exhibition entitled: “Bodytalk” to take place from 5th.
April to 2nd.
November 2014. Open to artists at any career stage. Objects can incorporate various materials
but must contain an element of glass.
Theme: Our aim is to curate an exhibition of works interpreting various aspects of body, sex
and gender. Throughout history, concepts of body and sex have had a significant impact.
From ancient idealization of the harmonious, athletic body to the 1960’s ‘liberated’ body and
gender perceptions to the more recent depreciation of the ‘natural’ body in favour of the
‘modified’ eternally young body. In the wake of the development of the concept of the body,
and that many have come to realize that society not only shapes personality and behaviour, it
also shapes the way in which the body appears, there have also been changes to the
perception of gender. Today, traditional gender perceptions and stereotypes, including the
concept of ‘the ideal family unit’ are in transition and there is a lively debate about equal
rights, women in top positions and men in more domestic roles. But what happens to our
perception of body, sex and gender when the concepts are illustrated and reinterpreted by a
group of international artists? The selection of work from the applicants will be based on
their relevance to the theme of the exhibition.
Submission Guidelines: Each artist can submit up to three pieces of work for consideration. It
is also possible to send sketches and descriptions for works in progress and proposed works.
Dimensions of individual works must not exceed 200cm, although there is a possibility to
participate with an installation, which must not exceed 200w x 300d x 250 h. cm. Up to three
images for each piece of work may be supplied. At least one image of each work must show
the work in its entirety. If sketches are being submitted, they must be scanned and sent in
jpeg or PDF format. Each image must be clearly labelled with the artist’s name as follows,
e.g. for work 1: Lene_Mogensen_1a.jpg / Lene_Mogensen_1b.jpg / Lene_Mogensen_1c.jpg.
All images must be supplied in jpeg format and 72dpi at this stage of submission. When
selected for the exhibition hi-res images for promotion and PR will be required.
Forms: All forms and images should be submitted by email, including a resumé/c.v (max. 2
pages) to Email: [email protected] by 1st.
December 2012 at the latest. Submission forms
can be downloaded from Website: www.glasmuseet.dk .
Results: Results will be sent by email to each applicant in February 2013. Selected applicants
will be announced on the website and notified by email with further information and
deadlines. Tel: 00 45 86 34 17 99. Email: [email protected] Website: www.glasmuseet.dk

*‘British Glass Biennale 2012’: I am absolutely delighted to announce that the overall winner
of the ‘British Glass Biennale 2012’ is Louis Thompson, for his large blown glass/mixed
media installation ‘Troupe: Dance Composition’ 160 x 175 x 45cm. The Worshipful
Company Of Glass Sellers ‘Art & Craft Awarded’ went to Colin Reid for one of his newer
series of untitled works where he has been introducing bright colour to his kiln-cast
sculptures, 79 x 34 x 8cm. The ‘Runner-Up Art & Craft Award’ went to Sally Fawkes &
Richard Jackson for one of their collaborative pieces, a very large kiln-
cast/engraved/cut/polished/mixed media work entitled ‘Observational Exchange’ 220 x
45cm. The Worshipful Co’s ‘Art & Craft Student Award’ was given to Vicky Higginson for
her collection of green hand blown/overlaid/engraved vessel forms titled ‘Atarashii Chado’ 7
x 27cm. Lastly, but by no means least, there was an ‘Art In Action Award For Contemporary
Glass’, the winner of which was Andrea Spencer with one of her signature pieces utilising
lampworked borosilicate glass. I understand that there will also be a ‘People’s Prize put up by
Warm Glass U.K. which will drawn at the end of the exhibition on 15th.
September. For those
that have not as yet had a chance to see this fantastic exhibition and all of its associated
exhibition, events and masterclasses under the banner of the ‘International Festival Of Glass’,
I strongly urge you to find the time and head off to Stourbridge before it closes on 15/09/12 –

*The Contemporary Glass Society’s @ Medallions’ Exhibition @ The International Festival
Of Glass 2012: This fun and light heart exhibition, whilst being unique and well thought out
by both the Artists and C.G.S. has surpassed all expectations in both the number of entries
and, how quickly the work has been selling, right from the off on 22/09/12. Within two days
of its opening, from some 80+ medals, 35 had been sold, ... which must be some sort of
record, I should imagine!? Sponsored by Glass Collector Mark Holford, the ‘Best In Show’
first prize went to Rowan Van Der Holt for one of her familiar, intricate lampworked glass
pieces. The two Runner-Up awards going to Junko Eager for an engraved medallion and Vic
Bamforth for a very visual medal in his usual painterly style of making, all of which sold
straight away. The panel consisting of Victoria Scholes and Alan J. Poole, also then decided
it was only right that various Artists be commended on their work, which I might add, was
extremely difficult to decide upon, given such diverse and well executed work, but in the end,
‘Mentions’ were given to Katharine Coleman M.B.E., Rachel Elliott, Joanne Mitchell &
Sandra Young. ‘Medallions’ also has a ‘People’s Award’ prize sponsored by Glass Collector
& Promoter, Alan J. Poole which will be announced at the end of the exhibition, when all the
votes have been counted. Once again, as with the ‘British Glass Biennale 2012’, I cannot over
emphasis how much you should see this excellent work by a vast array of artists working
across almost all of the glass techniques and surface decoration. Another definite must for
anyone with an interest in contemporary glass. The Ruskin Glass Centre. Amblecote. GB.

*Change Of Venue: ‘Cambridge Glass Fair’. The devastating fire and subsequent destruction
of the Chilford Hall barns in June has meant that the next Cambridge Glass Fair on Sunday
23rd
September has been moved to Linton Village College. Linton Village College, which is
located approximately one mile from Chilford Hall, has just opened its new wing which will
provide a light and modern environment for the glass fair. The Cambridge Glass Fair is one
of the major specialist fairs in the U.K. with around 100 exhibitors selling fine antique and
collectable glass from all periods. Exhibitors will also include contemporary artists showing
their own work. This twice-yearly event usually features exhibitions, demonstrations and
book signings. As always there will be a special exhibition highlighting a particular glass
collecting area. The exhibition for this fair will feature Victorian dumps and contemporary
American paperweights. Peter Sellers, author of ‘Victorian Dumps, Paperweights, Mantel
Ornaments, Doorstops and Whimsies, 1820-1914’, will be curating the dump exhibition
while the Cambridge-based Paperweight Collectors Circle is providing the contemporary
weight display. In addition, the online collecting group Whitefriars.com will be staging an
exhibition entitled ‘Whitefriars 20t.h
Century clear and coloured cut crystal'. Contemporary
artists who are showing at the fair include Vic Bamforth and Allister Malcolm from
Stourbridge, Rowan Van Der Holt from the West Country and Gloria MacArthur, a local
artist from Hertfordshire. Refreshments and free parking will be available. Linton Village
College, Linton, Cambs. CB21 4JB. Open from 10:30 – 16:00, admission is £5.00 with free
entry for accompanied children under 16. Please visit Website: www.cambridgeglassfair.com

*New Studios & Courses At Plymouth College Of Art: Plymouth College Of Art
Contemporary Crafts Development. In today’s design-rich culture, Contemporary Crafts and
their associated skills are in higher demand than ever before and yet Colleges nationally are
closing their craft courses and channelling the bulk of investment into new digital
technologies. Plymouth College Of Art is bucking the trend by investing £4m in building a
brand new, state of the art, craft and digital design workshop block that will place the College
at the forefront of contemporary crafts training. The College’s new programme of
contemporary crafts courses means that students can now study the specialism at Foundation
Degree, B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. level. Tim Bolton, Academic Director at Plymouth College
Of Art says, “We are confident that these new facilities and courses will help shape the
careers of the next generation of talented crafts people. Our investment in endangered
subjects such as glass shows the college’s commitment to ensuring the crafts play a central
role in our curriculum.” The inclusion of new hot glass and architectural glass workshops in
this building will support the launch of our MA Crafts programme in September 2012, along
with enhancing the experience for other degree students. It is also the ambition of the college
that the wider glass and creative community will be able to access the workshops and benefit
from these facilities. The appointment of a new Programme Leader for Contemporary Crafts
early in the academic year will further strengthen the existing glass team of lecturers and
technicians. Tel: 01752 205 716. Email: [email protected]
