Fall Recruiting Terms

OCI: On-Campus Interview. Bid: Submission of your materials to an employer participating in OCI, i.e.,

applying for a job with that employer. Pre-select: When an employer selects you to participate in an OCI. You will

receive an email from Symplicity when an employer chooses you as a pre-select.

Alternate: An employer may designate you as an alternate for an OCI. They may interview you if time and space allows; alternates will be able to sign up for OCIs on the final day of interview scheduling.

Accepting a pre-select: Signing up for an OCI with an employer. Declining a pre-select: Declining an offer to interview with an employer.

If you would not accept a job with an employer, you should decline a pre-select.

Call-Back Interview: When an employer (usually after an OCI) invites you to its organization for an on-site interview.

Not Selected: You might see this if you were not selected for an interview OR if the employer failed to make their selections by their deadline.

Page 17: F ALL 2015 R ECRUITING S EASON Information about On-Campus, Off-Campus, and Government Honors Hiring

Fall Recruiting Terms (cont.) Off-Campus Interview/MCGC: The program that UW Law holds in conjunction

with 6 other law schools that takes place in the employers’ city either in a central location or in the employer’s office.

Resume Collect (RC): Organizations that don’t come on campus often have an interest in UW Law students but don’t have the resources to visit all schools or there is not a critical mass of students to make a visit feasible.

Direct Submit Application: If there are organizations in which you have an interest that are not participating in OCI, RC or MCGC, you should submit an application to them directly. This should be done during the same time (or before) you are submitting your applications to the other programs.

Rolling Basis: Many public interest jobs will state an application deadline as “Rolling Basis” which means they will continue to collect materials from those interested until they find the right person. This means you should apply sooner rather than later.

NALP: National Association of Law Placement is the organization that sets the standards for recruiting that all law schools and most larger legal employers follow.

NALP Waiting Period: The 28 days a NALP employer should provide to a student to whom they have extended an offer for summer employment. The student needs to verify the offer within 14 days.

A Note About Public Interest

Public Interest hiring for summer tends to happen later in the school year (December-April)

Keep in mind that a number of non-profits/NGOs fill their internship spots on a rolling basis, so applying early is encouraged

The geographical and interest-area options are numerous, so discuss your options with OCPD

Accepting and Rejecting Offers Before you accept or reject an offer, talk

to your advisor at OCPD! If you are up against a deadline and you

have not heard from another employer, CALL THAT EMPLOYER!

Keep in mind: acceptance of an offer will be viewed by the employer as a promise to cancel other interviews and end your search!

Final Thoughts

These are but some of opportunities to find a Summer 2016 position.

Page 33: F ALL 2015 R ECRUITING S EASON Information about On-Campus, Off-Campus, and Government Honors Hiring

Really Final Thoughts

Approach your summer position with the same level of professionalism no matter where you are working.

Use this summer to do some self-assessment. Think about where and what you’d like to be doing next summer.

Take the opportunity to reach out to and meet attorneys through receptions, CLE’s, bar events, and INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS.
