INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to summarize the results of the satisfaction and open

ended questions in the Facilities Survey conducted as part of the 2010 update of the College of

Lake County Facilities Master Plan. In November 2010, the Facilities Survey was conducted for

Grayslake, Southlake, and Lakeshore campuses. The online survey was sent to students and

faculty & staff, and a link was available on the College of Lake County website for community

members. The respondents were asked to take the survey of the campus with which they are

most familiar. A total of 1,718 students, faculty or staff, and community members responded

to the Grayslake survey; a total of 140 for the Southlake survey; and a total of 92 for the

Lakeshore survey. A sample profile, by campus is presented in Appendix A of the report.

The survey asked respondents to rate their satisfaction with areas of each campus (see

questionnaire in Appendix B) using the following three point response scale: Very Satisfied,

Somewhat Satisfied, Not at all satisfied. In addition, the survey asked the following open-ended

questions:

1. What do you LIKE about the campus and grounds?

2. What do you DISLIKE about the campus and grounds? What issues or problems have

you observed?

3. What improvements to the campus or grounds would you like to see take place?

The open-ended responses were coded into common themes or categories for

analytical purposes. Note that responses can be coded into more than one theme or category;

hence, the total number of responses is duplicated. The results were triangulated by having

another researcher review and recode, if appropriate. The satisfaction ratings and the open-

ended results are presented for each campus in its own section. Results for Grayslake Campus

are presented first, followed by the Southlake and Lakeshore Campus results.

Institutional Effectiveness, Planning & Research Page 25

Some specific improvements that were mentioned by the Lakeshore respondents included:

1. Library: Build a full service Learning Resource Center, provide library orientation

and research training for classes, computer equipment equivalent to Grayslake. Provide expanded space and services for testing. Bigger math/writing center, more tutors.

2. Security: Provide better security, lighting, and walkways. Build a covered walkway

from rear parking area to building so that it is not necessary to walk through a dark ally. Install security cameras, patrol the garage and stairways. Have someone other than the busy front desk monitor security cameras. Control loitering.

3. General appearance of the campus: Make Lakeshore as attractive as Grayslake.

Modernize the appearance of the buildings, repair the surfaces of the buildings. Make spaces more inviting. Add different paint colors to 1 North Genesee. Make appearance of buildings more uniform. Add picnic tables or other outdoor furniture in the courtyard. Add more landscaping between buildings.

4. Cafeteria: Build a cafeteria or space for outside food vendors. Students should be

able to buy good lunch or dinner choices. Add coffee cart instead of a coffee machine in the lobby.

5. Parking lots: New parking lot is too far from buildings. Add more parking spaces.

Improve lighting in parking areas. Repair stairwell in parking garage. Have designated parking for faculty.

6. Computer labs: Build new computer lab similar to Grayslake. Computers are slow

and out of date. Make sure computer lab and equipment are clean.

7. Classroom technology: Equipment is second-rate. Make all classrooms smart rooms. Add ceiling mounted projectors. Third floor classroom (UC) computer carts are not reliable.

8. Study areas: Build a place for students to study and relax. Build a student life

center. Stop using study areas for vendors. Hold more student events, things for students to do during their down time.

9. Administrative areas: Move administrative offices to second floor so that student

services (counseling, etc.) can be on first floor. Faculty office space needs to be expanded, especially for adjunct faculty. Better student testing/assessment rooms.

10. Signage: Campus directories need to be provided. Add signs to direct students to

correct building/ office.

o The Grayslake and Southlake groups were also similar in their gender and age make up. Among both student and faculty/staff respondents at Grayslake and Southlake, about two-thirds were female.

o The Lakeshore respondents were more heavily female, with about 85% of

Lakeshore students being female and about 75% of faculty/staff respondents being female.

o Slightly higher percentages of the Grayslake and Southlake student respondent

groups were aged 18-24 (about 45%), while the Lakeshore student respondent group had only 38% aged 18-24.

Table 3 shows the time of class and credit hour load of the respondents, by campus:

o A slightly higher percentage of the Grayslake student respondent group

indicated that they attend primarily in the day (60%), while the Lakeshore and Southlake students were about equally divided by day/evening attendance.

o Likewise, a slightly higher percentage of the Grayslake students group indicated

that they attended full time (44%), while the comparable percentages for Lakeshore and Southlake were about 37%.
