INTRODUCTION
The Centre for Institutional Analysis and Planning (CIAP) is pleased to present our 22nd annual FactBook. This publication is available in both a printed and an electronic format. You will find the electronicversion, plus other reports and information on our web page at www.mun.ca/ciap.
Over the course of the academic year, University offices responsible for maintaining permanentrecords are called upon to satisfy the data requirements of a variety of users. We realize that no project ofthis scope can be all things to all people; therefore, some readers may have questions that are notcompletely answered by this book's contents. Before you begin your analysis, please note the followingitems that apply to the entire publication; issues that are specific to particular sections have beenpresented at the beginning of that section.
Where data in a table is an aggregate of several components, this book presents the data in a series ofrelated tables. The first table shows the combined totals, and subsequent tables in the series show theindividual components. For example, Table 5 has three segments: 5A describes total students graduateand undergraduate enrolment by faculty and school; and Tables 5B and 5C show the full-time and part-time components respectively.
Please note that as of 2010, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College has been renamed Grenfell Campus. Inadditon, due to the similarity of many of the tables, please read the title and any footnotes carefully.
The document is the end product of data and suggestions that were contributed by the followingdepartments. We are grateful to the staff of:
Alumni Affairs and Development Financial and Administrative Services Human Resources Marine Institute
.
Financial and Administrative Services Human Resources Marine Institute Office of Research Services Office of the Registrar University Library
If you would like further information regarding any tables found either in this publication or on ourweb page, the Centre for Institutional Analysis and Planning (864-4016) will be pleased to assist.

2. Important note: The timing of the generation of enrolment reports has changed from the end of drop period
Memorial University of Newfoundland - Fact Book 2010 7
1. Only enrolment data from the Fall Semester are shown in this Fact Book.
2. Important note: The timing of the generation of enrolment reports has changed from the end of drop period(seven weeks after the start of classes) to the end of the regular registration period (two weeks after the start ofclasses). Enrolment data, for all tables, are now compiled as of the end of the regular registration period. ForTables 5-7 and 9-14 data from previous years have been adjusted to reflect this change. Please note that Tables 1-4 were not affected by the change in reporting date. Data for Table 8 are generated before the drop date forgraduate students.
3. Beginning in 2003-2004, Table 1 and Table 2 full-time and part-time undergraduate enrolment includes level'04' Diploma in Information Technology students. Level '04' enrolment is now included in the following Tablesof the Student Profile: Table 5 (except for undergraduate medicine students (2003 only); which are not included inTable 5, but are included in the total in Table 1), 7A, 9, 11, 12 and 13.
4. Data recorded are as indicated on students' application for admission/readmission and other appropriateforms.
5. The 'unspecified' category in student enrolment includes 'not applicable', 'not specified', 'undeclared', and'other'.
6. In 1983-84 first-year enrolment was reduced significantly because of the implementation of Grade XII inNewfoundland and Labrador schools.
7. Tables 15, 16 and 17 refer to students attending the Marine Institute.
8. Beginning in 2005, the methodology for Table 12, 13 and 14 data are now based on enrolled students'citizenship and permanent residence at the time of application.

Research Profile
1. The data used in these tables have been compiled from the records of the Office of Research, which provides anannual Inventory of Sponsored Projects of funded research projects after circulating preliminary lists to faculties anddepartments for crosschecking. Copies of the Inventory of Sponsored Projects are available from the Office of Researchand on-line at www.mun.ca/research. The Office of Research figures are derived from notices of awards sent tosuccessful applications. In some cases, researchers receive more or less money in a given year than is originallypledged and recorded.
2. The Office of Research also tracks non-financial external support for University research - such items includefree supplies involved in experiments, access to off-campus equipment, computer or other facilities and ship-timefor researchers at sea.
3. Included in the 'Other' category are grants and/or awards for:
* Conferences/workshops/symposia * Equipment* Fellowships * General support awards* Infrastructure * In-kind* Scholarships * Ship-time* Studentships * Research chairs* Research personnel awards * Travel
4. In addition to the standard operating grant, the category of Operating Grants includes the following:
* Collaborative project grants * Collaborative special projects* Lithoprobe * Development* Partnerships * Publication* Strategic * Team
5. In-kind is not regarded as a funding category. Instead, it is recorded as a type of funding like cash. All in-kind
Memorial University of Newfoundland - Fact Book 2010 63
* Strategic * Team
5. In-kind is not regarded as a funding category. Instead, it is recorded as a type of funding like cash. All in-kindcounts have already been included in the various funding categories. For example, if a sponsor provides an in-kindcontribution as an operating grant, one operating grant is counted. In 2009-10, there were 73 in-kind awards.
6. Revenue earned by the Marine Institute for industry response, and applied research and development activities isnot included in this report.
7. Operating grants are awarded to individuals or teams to cover part or all of the direct costs of particular researchprojects. They often include provisions for salaries paid to graduate students and other assistants, the University'sshare of fringe benefits costs, and the expense of materials, technical services, field travel and computing.
8. Operating Contracts are similar to operating grants but involve a contractual agreement that is more formal thanthe terms of a conventional grant. By means of contract, the sponsor normally acquires an interest in the results ofthe research and can enforce strict time, scope and reporting requirements. University policy, however, stipulatesthat investigators retain the right to publish, subject to a reasonable deferral period.
9. There is a difference in award counts in Tables 22 and 24. Table 22 counts actual awards whereas Table 24 countsthe contributions from the various sponsor categories. For example, an award provided by two sponsors would be countedas one award in Table 22, but as two contributions in Table 24. As a result, the total number of award counts forTable 24 for 2009-10 is 20 higher than for Table 22.
