National Trust launches campaign to get children outdoors

The National Trust has launched a nationwide campaign to encourage children to take to the outdoors and enjoy classic adventures from skimming stones to building dens. The charity’s 50 Things to do before you’re 11¾ campaign provides a checklist for under-12s (and those who are young at heart) including everything from running around in the rain and bug hunting, to setting up a snail race, damming a stream, flying a kite and making a (delicious) mud pie.  Kids can pick up a free 50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾ scrapbook from Killerton and Arlington Court – and start ticking off their outdoor adventures to do list. Plus, the fun can continue at home by visiting nationaltrust.org.uk/50things where children can fill in their completed activities and earn points towards their very own explorer badge. For more information go to www.50things.org.uk

Pool Re-openingSwimmers in North Devon can take their first dip in the new-look swimming pool at the North Devon Leisure Centre following the re-opening on Saturday 28 April, after a six-month refurbishment project.Parkwood Leisure’s General Manager, Sandie Spratt says: “This has been a long awaited day. I am confident our children will enjoy the pool for Aquazone swimming lessons and inflatable fun, and that the adults will have a great time with our brand new Aqua Zumba class. The swimming clubs have been very patient over the development and we trust everyone will benefit from the new features.”

To book an activity and for more information call Parkwood Leisure on 01271 373361.

Recycle creativelyStart Imagining is a new recycling programme for schools and families, inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales to stimulate young people to create arts and crafts from scrap or reclaimed materials. To kick-start the campaign a national competition, ‘From Tip To Ship’, has been launched for ages 5 to 16 to create a model boat that will be exhibited in London throughout June. Children have the opportunity to create an extraordinary and visionary model using reclaimed materials. ‘Start Imagining’ is a collaboration between Start, Cool it Schools, Craft Club and Freecycle and is available to schools through free, online resource packs.

Autism redefinedConcerns are growing within the autism community as proposed changes to the criteria used to diagnose autism threaten services, benefits and future research. The definition of autism is due to be tightened to exclude many of those who are presently diagnosed with what are considered to be milder forms of the condition, such as Asperger syndrome, and the new criteria could have far-reaching implications for families, says Gillian Loughran, editor of Autism Eye. "The exclusion of people who don't meet criteria in the new definition is being seen within the autism community as a way for governments to curtail the sky-rocketing rate of reported cases of autism worldwide, and with it the need for services and benefits." Currently, autism cases are reported to be running at around one in 100 children. www.autismeye.com/news

Reducing child accidents After cancer, accidents are the biggest single killer of UK children - and even children who survive serious accidents are often left with injuries that take months or years to heal. What’s more, the psychological damage caused to children and to their parents as the result of an accident can last a lifetime. This year’s Child Safety Week, June 18-24, aims to raise awareness of accident prevention amongst parents and those who work with children - reminding them, for example, to make sure that hot drinks are placed out of a child’s reach and that bathroom cleaning products are locked away.

For more information on the activities planned see www.childsafetyweek.org.uk

Time to Get Growing!Whilst waiting lists for allotments are growing faster than the crops on them, the advantages of growing your own food have never been greater. So it’s no surprise that more and more green fingered gardeners are looking for realistic alternatives. More and more people are turning to community gardens and land-share schemes to gain extra space to grow vegetables. And it is not only land that is being shared, but also experience, tools, seeds and produce. With a stronger sense of community and no allotment fees or waiting lists, it is clear to see why these schemes are proving to be so popular.

Big rewards...Growing vegetables can beneficial to your family in so many ways; it will not only provide you with quality organic produce, but also fresh air and exercise as well as savings to your weekly food bill.

LandshareIf you know someone in your community who might appreciate some help with their garden, why not suggest a mutually benifical arrangement such as growing veg at the bottom of their garden in

exchange for mowing their lawn and some of your produce. Or you can find or offer land onwww.landshare.net

Clever use of spaceUse all the space you have - you will be amazed how much produce you can grow in containers. Salad leaves are perfect for kitchen windowsills and potatoes, peas, beans and tomatoes will grow well in containers on the patio.

Community GardensContact your local community garden organiser to see when they meet and what you can do to help.

We are all aware of our carbon footprints so why are the majority of Devon mums still using disposable nappies? Real nappies are not only better for the environment but will also save you money and most importantly be better for your baby. There are many misconceptions about using cloth nappies which is probably why more of us aren’t opting to use them. In reality there are so many advantages to ‘going real’ more and more mums will be taking the plunge. With 20% off your first purchase, now available across the whole of Devon, and free trial kits available, perhaps you could too...

Better for babies...Washable nappies are breathable and give you the flexibility to add extra boosters at night or on car journeys, so you get fewer leaks. They keep baby’s hips apart at the right angle and can give extra padding for toddlers.

Making the switchEven if you are already using disposables it’s not too late. Some people start with a birth to potty system but there is no reason why you can’t switch over to real nappies at any stage or build up gradually. You will still save money - especially if you buy from a real nappy exchange.

Super Savings! On average you will save around £500 even including the washing costs. Cloth nappies vary in price depending on what type you use, the amount you need to buy will depend on which type you use

as some dry quicker than others.

Returning to work...There is no reason why nurseries and childminders can’t change cloth nappies. More and more are starting to use them so it’s worth asking and discussing any concerns which they may have.

It’s easier than you think!70% of mums who borrow a trial kit start using cloth nappies - most find it much easier than they first thought it would be. Wet nappies can be washed at 30˚ in a normal household load, or just put in a nappy only load every 2-3 days.

Using Cloth NappiesThe Real Deal!

Flat, Shaped, Pocket or All in One?

Flat nappies include traditional terries, muslins and prefolds. Pins have been replaced with easy to use plastic grippers. You will also need a liner and a breathable, waterproof wrap which fastens with velcro or poppers. This type of nappy gives you the best value for money, versatility and quick drying times.

Shaped nappies are easy to put on with no folding required, some fit from birth to potty while others come in different sizes. You still need a wrap but as with flat nappies they wash and dry easily.

Pocket nappies are versatile, easy to put on and can be prepared in advance. They are essentially a wrap with a pouch for a pad or insert, you have the versatility to add extra absorbency at night. Easy to wash and dry but they can be more expensive than flat and shaped nappies.

All in one nappies are the easiest to put on and you don’t need a separate wrap. The main disadvantages are that they, take longer to dry and cost more. They are however a really good option for childcare and those not confident using real nappies.

Organisation is key when it comes to arranging a successful birthday party, no matter what age your children are. There are a few tips on what works best for different ages - here is what we’ve foundworks best...

www.familiesnorthdevonexeter.co.uk

Party Time!

1-2 year oldsMost parties for this age group are for family and

friends with similar age children. It’s best to have a small gathering that won’t be too overwhelming.

3-4 year oldsIf you’re entertaining, have lots of

activities planned, it’s better to have too many rather than not enough! Simple traditional party games work well but be sure to explain games carefully in case it’s the first time they’ve played. Aim to have around 5-8 children in a familiar venue and keep food simple.

5-6 year oldsChildren this age will love a themed party - you could

let them choose a theme - dinosaurs, pirates, fairies etc. Variations on traditional party games, as well as some less

structured activities, will work well. Aim to have around 8-10 guests.

7-9 year oldsLonger concentration spans lend themselves to craft activities, which gives everyone a going home present too! T-shirt painting, jewellery making, pottery cafes and other arty activities are very good ideas for this age group.

10+ years oldAt around this age the birthday child may want fewer guests, just a few close friends. Consider taking them bowling, ice skating or karting and let them get involved in organising things like designing the invitations and choosing the party food to make

their day really special.

Say Cheese!

Try to find time to take photos. If you are too

busy, delegate this job to someone else. Photos

from the day can be used to make a really

lovely thank you card.

Take them out

Booking a complete party package at a venue is the least

stressful way to keep the birthday child and their friends entertained and all you have to worry about is taking photos. Try looking at what’s on offer at your local leisure centre, indoor play centre or pottery cafe.

For older children try taking them ice skating, bowling

or to the cinema.

EntertainersWhen choosing an

entertainer discuss with them what you have in mind

and take their advice on venues, timings and suitable prizes. Also be sure to ask them what their

preferred age group is and the maximum number of

children that you can have.

Think of your child’s birthday and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Already? What are we going to do this year? Whatever you think, instead of racking your brains thinking for the latest party ideas, what about actually doing some things the same as you did last year? Build simple birthday traditions that you all know about, look forward to, and that create memories that last a lifetime. This is the stuff of magic moments!

Big-Day Countdown Make the approach to their birthday important. Hang a garland of seven envelopes, each with a small daily goodie, leading up to the grand finale.

Decorate and Titivate The night before your child’s birthday sneak into their room and decorate it with a special sign wishing them a Happy Birthday. Blow up balloons and put birthday wishes all over the house.

Bake a cake Make a birthday cake instead of buying one. Your child will appreciate even a simple cake made from a mix. Get your child to pick out what they want their birthday cake to look like, a rocket, princess castle, favourite animal, etc.

Annual additions Plant a tree or flowers that bloom annually around your child’s birthday. Ask grandparents to add to a charm bracelet or commemorative coin collection each year.

Have a special meal Have breakfast in bed awakened by the whole family singing happy birthday. Create a beautiful tea party to enjoy the finger sandwiches and tea. Let the birthday child pick the dinner menu however crazy their wishes.

Opening presents Hide presents around the house and provide clues to help your child find them. Follow a ribbon to their first gift, or unroll string all around the house that take them to their presents.

Celebrate them growing up Create a photo banner of your child’s annual photographs. Take a family photo on the same settee every year put them in a scrapbook that you add to every year. Ask them their favourite colour, ice-cream, hobby, etc., note them down and do this on every birthday.

Capture the moment Get out the camcorder and interview your child about the special things they have done that year, include props like their award-winning science project that year, their sports trophies, the self-portrait they did of themselves, etc.

Tell a Tale Let the birthday child stay up a little later after the other children have gone to bed and tell them about the day they were born, and how you felt when they arrived.

Remind them of how special they are A simple way is give each member of the family a birthday candle, then pass around a small dessert. Each person puts in their candle and tells the birthday girl/boy something they love about them. They pass the dessert to the next person, who does the same until everyone has added their candle, light the candles and sing Happy Birthday.

Open daily April to 4th Nov and most weekends & school holidays during the winter

Going home giftsGreat parties don’t have to end with expensive loot bags. Here’s 8 simple ways to end the party in style without stretching the budget.

Make sure birthdays remain special for special children

Since traditions are often visual and repeated, most children with special needs will really appreciate and learn to love these birthday traditions. To help ensure their special day, here are a few extra watchouts...

Watch what they eat It’s easy to let slip strict dietary requirements during a day of celebration. For children with allergies and even vegetarian, let your party host know in advance and make appropriate plans.

Avoid overload Don’t overwhelm with too many guests, lights, games, candles, music and presents. Decorate simply, put on a relaxing CD, and provide a quiet place where they can go if they want to.

Prepare them Let them know in advance what to expect.  Explain the plan of the day. Let them sit where they are comfortable and if out; provide them with an exit strategy. Give your child a signal they can use with you if they need to leave a place or situation.

Keep the day low keyTreat the birthday as just another day, an important day, but not one that’s too busy. Let them help plan the day so that it’s kept special and unique.

Time factor

For most parties 2 hours is enough - certainly for

younger children. If you are using an entertainer they will advise you how much time to

allow. Sometimes you may need slightly longer for activities that

will keep children engaged or if you need to travel to

a venue.

1. Brown paper bags with the child’s name

in big writing and decorated with stickers

are very effective.

3. Let the birthday person create their own toys using clay, paint, beads and buttons.

4. Get cardboard picture frames and slip in a note

about where the party pictures have been uploaded online.

7. Buy big bouncy balls and scatter them about

your lawn before the party. Great decoration

and each guest can take one home.

8. Print off free colouring sheets of favourite characters from the

internet, and burn a CD of the birthday person’s

favourite songs.

5. Do something arty during the party and

let the guests take their handiwork home.

6. To last a little longer, give seeds to plant in the garden or a cookie cutter that’s related to the party

theme.

2. Bake cookies or other treats and package them

in cellophane tied with ribbon.

New checks for childrenFollowing on from a pilot scheme last year, new phonics tests are to be introduced to all Year 1 pupils this summer. The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard, and will apply to all Year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and Free Schools.

The test will take place between 18 and 22 June 2012, with the aim of identifying children who need extra help and who can then be given support by their school to improve their reading skills. According to the Department of Education, the check will comprise a list of 40 words and non-words or nonsense words, which a child will read one-to-one with a teacher. Half of the words cover phonics skills that tend to be learnt in Reception, while the other half are based on Year 1 phonics skills.

Word from the DfE is that the tests will not be daunting, but are merely there to check that children at the end of Year 1 have the foundations they need to learn to read, such as skills for blending sounds into words and the phonic knowledge of recognising the sounds for basic letters and letter combinations.

Find out more at http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/teachingandlearning/pedagogy/phonics.

Exam boards get toughFinally, exam boards are listening to the cries of parents and teachers that GCSEs are becoming too easy!

The exams regulator, Ofqual, has announced that it will be making changes to GCSEs in English literature, maths, history and geography, tightening them up and ensuring students study the whole curriculum. This comes amid concerns that pupils are only studying topics likely to come up in exams, rather than the entire course. “We are tightening GCSEs in these key subjects to make sure students cover the whole curriculum,” says Ofqual chief executive Glenys Stacey. “We want our young people to have the best possible educational experience, with qualifications that prepare them for the future.

The exam boards have welcomed this steer from the regulator and are to look again at these qualifications and how the rules are interpreted to make sure that young people taking them have to study an appropriate range and depth of the subject.” This spring’s announcement is part of a move away from teaching to the exam and to encourage wider study. Changes to GCSE geography will be introduced for teaching from this September, with maths from November and history and English literature papers from September 2013. “It is vital confidence is restored in the exams system,” added a Department for Education spokesman. “We are committed to raising standards for all pupils and are pleased Ofqual is taking action to ensure that GCSEs in these subjects are more challenging.”

Exeter Steiner free school bid through to next stepA new Steiner free school in Exeter is one step closer as representatives of the proposed Steiner Academy Exeter have been invited to meet with the Department for Education in London on May 31st.

Following the interview, if the application is approved to go to the next stage, the academy team will be allocated a named contact within the department to support it through the development of the school.

The academy team are hoping to go to the interview with as many signatures as possible from parents expressing a commitment to send their children to the school. They are looking for a final push for petition signatures and will be out and about across the city in the next few weeks.

Parents with children of primary and secondary school age yet to show their support are asked to visit www.steineracademyexeter.org.uk/petition.html and complete the form.

The academy team is also in the process of seeking suitable premises in Exeter. If approved, the school will open in 2013 with places for 130 children, rising to 624 when it reaches full capacity.

Lighting the way to London 2012 By Rebecca Carr

On 18 May 2012, the Olympic Torch Relay will start with a 70-day celebration that will travel thousands of miles to bring the London 2012 Games to hundreds of communities across the UK.

The Olympic Flame will be lit on 10 May in Olympia, Greece and will embark on a 8 day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens for the official Olympic Flame handover ceremony. Lighting the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium signifies the beginning of the games and the flame will stay lit until the closing ceremony on 12 August.

The Olympic Flame is one of the most recognized symbols of any Olympic Games. A ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games. The flame is then handed over to the new host city and the Flame is then transferred from one torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship.

Not just superstarsIt’s not just sporting superstars who’ll carry the Olympic Flame this summer. People from all walks of life and from every part of the UK will take part. In all, 8,000 torchbearers will get the chance of a lifetime to carry the flame and over half of the torchbearers will be young people aged 12 - 25.

When will the torch come through Devon? For the first time in Olympic history, Britain will be the first country to hold a torch relay completely within the UK. The Olympic Torch Relay will be a fantastic spectacular, a chance to celebrate your community and showcase it to the world – so don’t miss out! The Torch will be travelling from Plymouth to Exeter on Sunday 20th May. There will be evening celebrations in Exeter before the

Torch Relay continues on Monday 21st May travelling from Exeter to Taunton. The route includes Great Torrington, Bideford, Sticklepath, Barnstaple, Wrafton, Braunton, Knowle, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. For more information go to www.london2012.com/olympic-torch-relay

Festival 2012Since 2008, the Cultural Olympiad has been inspiring the arts in a variety of events from local projects to large-scale performances across the whole of the UK. Festival 2012 will be the finale and the most exciting festival the UK has ever seen. Whether you like dancing, music, fashion or food, you’ll find something you can get involved in, with many free events suitable for the family to enjoy.

Festival 2012 opens on 21 June and will run to 9th September (the final day of the London 2012 Paralympic Games). Festival areas include; arts, carnivals, comedy, dance, film, music, food and much more. Many events are free but tickets may be required so check the website for more details.

The Big DanceOne of the highlights of Festival 2012 is The Big Dance Schools Pledge –

the world’s largest and most influential dance initiative, which invites schools from around the UK and the world to join in a world record attempt for the largest simultaneous dance routine.

The Schools Pledge is formed in two parts: Firstly, learn the choreography and take part in the world record attend for the largest dance routine on 18 May and secondly, do an additional 20 minutes of dance a day during Big Dance week from 7 – 15 July 2012.

On 18 May, schools around the world will go to their school halls, playgrounds, playing fields or to public spaces and perform a 5 minute choreography arranged by Wayne McGregor CBE, resident choreographer at the Royal Ballet. The current record is held by the Netherlands with 264,188 people and 1,472 locations.

The schools pledge is a fantastic and fun opportunity for young people of all ages to learn a new dance inspired by the Olympics and to perform it as part of a world record attempt.
