August 15, 2012
About 50 years ago, the homes from Clinton,
NY to Hamilton, NY received their first issue of
a Pennysaver.
Forty-seven years ago, the Lee family said
“Hello” to the Mohawk Valley with the valley’s
first issue of a Pennysaver.
Now, 47 to 50 years later, the same Lee
family is saying “Hello” to Herkimer County and
parts of Oneida County with the first issue of
“The Original Family Pennysaver.”
For many years Herkimer Country residents
were blessed with a fine weekly publication, the
Valley Home News. When this paper ceased
publication, the absence of the weekly Valley
Home News left a noticeable void in local
merchants’ and individuals’ ability to advertise.
Most Herkimer County homes who chose not
to subscribe or purchase a local newspaper
were without a publication to advertise in.
Merchant advertisers no longer had a
convenient, inexpensive way to reach that large
group of non-subscribers. Numerous surveys
have shown that approximately 21% of country
homes do receive a subscribed paper. Which
also indicates about 79% do not.
Experience has taught us to believe now more
than ever merchants, residents, and
professionals need or require a dependable
results-producing local weekly paper to convey
their message.
We promise and will attempt to publish a
paper you will enjoy. The content will be folksy
and down-to-earth. A publication you can trust
in your family way of life. Whenever and always,
we will support the United States. Sometimes
in support of an issue, others in a critical way.
We believe in God and our right to believe and
live with our faith and will always defend our
representative, capitalist form of economy and
government.
We trust our readers will
enjoy the folksy down-to-
earth combination of local
advertising, both display and
reader ads (non-classified
line ads) and other just-
good-reading materials.
Within every “Hello Again” we attempt to
inform, amuse, and share a little Irish blarney.
The pretty young farm girl had just broken off
her engagement with a young doctor. “Do you
mean to tell me,” exclaimed her girlfriend, “That
he actually asked you to return all his presents?”
“Not only that,” she replied, “he sent me a bill
for 44 house calls.”
A farmer asked his friend, a weatherman, how
he liked the new minister. He replied, “He speaks
155 words a minute with a gust up to 180.”
With a car full of friends we wandered around
the country enjoying the summer season with
its colorful views. We ended up in Fly Creek and
met up with a real live wolff.
Before you get nervous and shed up your
chickens, sheep and goats, this wolff spells his
named with two f’s (Wolff, not wolf), and they
come in pairs. Mr. and Mrs. Wolff own and
operate a nifty den in Fly Creek known as a quilt
store. Our ladies were still chattering about
the quaint quilt store on the trip back up
through Fly Creek Valley on the way home.
What do you do at 2 in the morning when you
can’t sleep? Try this. Get up, get dressed, hop
on your three-wheeled, red Can-Am roadster
and take a ten-minute trip. Return home. Get
out the “New World Dictionary” and look up the
word capitalism.
This is what Mr. Webster has to say for
capitalism:
The economic system in which all or most of
the means of production and distribution, as
land, factories, railroads, etc. are privately
owned and operated for profit, under fully
competitive conditions.
Later I went back to Mr. Webster to learn
what he had to say about socialism. In Mr.
Webster’s words:
Socialism: an economic theory or system of
the reconstruction of society on the basis of
cooperation of labor and community of
property. (End of Webster’s quote.)
Businesses and property are basically
community owned. You probably would not own
your house, technically little of anything else.
Government owned businesses are not required
to produce a profit. If a business is failing, it is
owned and operated by the government so keep
it going anyway and let the citizens collectively
support it, dragging down all. If a business is
privately owned, it is basically controlled by the
socialist party.
Denmark is held up by socialists as the finest
example of socialism. However, the employed
pay over 90% of their earned money to the
government.
You could easily ask, “Fred, why are you so
interested in capitalism and socialism?”
My answer would be—I am a God-fearing, die-
hard American. I will spend the remainder of my
days believing and defending both God and
country.
The controlling members of our government,
the White House, and Senate are obviously
attempting to ditch our means of government
and enterprise away from capitalism, reducing
this greatest country on the face of the earth
into socialism. They preach and teach big
government.
In a capitalistic society individual people—
citizens, and even those from foreign countries,
can invest their own or borrowed dollars
(capital) to start, buy, own in total or part, and
personally manage their privately owned and
controlled business. It remains as an asset of
actual persons and not the government.
Now turn to page 1 in Fred’s book of wisdom
and you will read a country boy’s boiled-down
definition of capitalism and capitalists.
The good old-fashioned way this great nation
of the United States of America was built with.
Not socialism, as some are trying to change
our nation into. Socialism is one step before
communism.
If they win, we will be kissin’ cousins to Cuba,
Russia, China, and a few more failing
societies—oh yeah—Denmark too.
Be happy, say hi to your neighbors, a
wonderful way to meet new friends is in church,
as the old saying goes, “Why not try it? You
might like it.” The world’s greatest friend, the
Lord, promises to be there too.
Have a wonderful week.
Sincerely,
Fred Lee and the Lee Family

by Freddy GrovesRural Cemeteries
Veterans in very rural areashave had little opportunity toarrange for burial in a nation-al or state veterans cemetery. The Department of VeteransAffairs operates 131 nationalcemeteries, but they're in ar-eas of high population. Cur-rent requirements say thatthere must be 80,000 veteransliving within 75 miles for acemetery to come under theauspices of the NationalCemetery System.
Now, because of the RuralInitiative, eight areas will havelocal cemeteries established asNational Veterans BurialGrounds. The new require-ments are that there are nomore than 25,000 veteranswithin 75 miles and that theyhave no reasonable access to anational or state veteranscemetery.
The eight new locations areFargo, ND.; Rhinelander, WI;Cheyenne, WY; Laurel, MT;Idaho Falls, Idaho; Cedar City,Utah; Calais, Maine; and Elko,
NV. This opens up burial op-tions for 136,000 veterans andtheir eligible dependents.
The new designationsmeans that a portion, three tofive acres, of existing localcemeteries will come underthe care of the NationalCemetery System and bebrought up to the nationalshrine standards of the largercemeteries. Besides making iteasier on families to have alocal cemetery, there are ad-ditional benefits to burial in aNational Cemetery, no matter
its size: The headstone, mark-er and burial plot are free.
Eligibility requirements forburial in a National VeteransCemetery are lengthy andcomplicated, but at the top ofthe list are: Discharge underconditions other than dishon-orable, or a service memberwho dies while on active duty. The specifics can be found atthe VA's National Cemeterysite [www.cem.va.gov]. To as-certain eligibility for burial ina National Cemetery, call thescheduling office at 1-800-
535-1117.If you'd like to explore hav-
ing a National Veterans Bur-ial Ground at a cemetery inyour area, start by contact-ing your U.S representativeand VA Secretary Eric Shin-seki's office.

(ARA) — While warmerweather brings manyopportunities to enjoyoutdoor living spaces, italso ushers in unwantedpests like ticks andmosquitos.
A mild winter oftentriggers an early emer-gence and larger popu-lations of these insects.Frequent accounts oftick sightings and biteshave been documentedin many states, and theCenters for DiseaseControl and Prevention(CDC) reports a steadyincrease in the preva-lence of tick-borneillnesses like Lymedisease and RockyMountain spotted fevereach year.
About 75 percent of allreported Lyme diseasecases are acquired fromticks picked up duringactivities in backyardsand around the home, according to the CDCwebsite.
The site also notesthat homeowners canreduce the population ofticks that can causeLyme disease and thelike by 68 to 100 per-cent with as little as oneapplication of an appro-priate outdoor insecti-cide spray.
Another pest-spreadillness, West Nile virus,
is transmitted throughthe bites of infectedmosquitos. West Nileposes health risks tohumans and pets alikeduring the warm sum-mer months.
While incidents ofWest Nile virus have de-clined over the past 10years, the CDC reportsit to be an establishedseasonal epidemic thatcan cause severe illnessand result in permanentneurological damage.
The best way to pre-vent an outbreak of thedisease, according to theCDC, is through the useof an integrated pestmanagement (IPM) ap-proach to control bothadult mosquitos andtheir larvae before theycan hatch and mature.
The EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA)describes IPM on itswebsite, www.epa.gov,as “an effective and en-vironmentally sensitiveapproach to pest man-agement that relies on acombination of com-mon-sense practices.”
The EPA points outthat the IPM approach, which takes insects’ lifecycles into considera-tion as well as currentlyavailable pest controlmethods, is a good wayto manage pests eco-
nomically and with theleast health and envi-ronmental hazards.
In addition to the ef-forts and community ed-ucation by organizationslike the EPA, there aremany simple, preventa-tive steps that individu-als can take to ensuretheir own lawns, gar-dens and patios are asafe environment forsummer fun.
“Keeping grass cutshort and eliminatingstanding water in andaround the home aretwo easy, effective waysto reduce the prevalenceof menaces like ticksand mosquitos,” saysAaron Hobbs, presidentof RISE (Responsible In-dustry for a Sound Envi-ronment) — a national
organization represent-ing the manufacturers, formulators and distrib-utors of pesticide andfertilizer products. “Theapplications of insect re-pellents and thoroughskin checks after spend-ing time outdoors alsoserve as important safe-guards for adults, chil-dren and pets.
“Pesticide and repel-lent products can pro-vide significant protec-tion, and it is importantto note that these prod-ucts are rigorously test-ed and approved by EPAand your state to ensurethey will protect you andyour pets from harmfulpests,” Hobbs continues.
Reading pesticide andrepellent labels and fol-lowing directions for
proper application andstorage are ways to en-sure that your outdoorliving spaces remain ahealthy, pest-free sum-mer haven.

by Samantha MazzottaPlumbing Tool Kit for
an ApartmentQ: I’m moving into my
first apartment, and mydad said that I shouldhave some basic toolsaround for plumbingproblems to keep dam-age from happeningwhile we’re waiting forthe repairman. What arethe best tools to have totake care of plumbingemergencies? -- Tamarain Tuscon, Ariz.
A: The most indispen-sible tool in the apart-ment plumbing toolboxis, in my experience, theplunger. This inexpen-sive piece of equipmentcan stop toilets fromoverflowing and unblocksinks and shower drainswithout doing damage to
the pipes. When choos-ing a plunger, go for abasic “force cup” model(this is the classicplunger with a simplebell), which works beston sinks and drains. Ifyou want something alittle more powerful fortoilet clogs, pick up asecond plunger with acenter cone, which canincrease the vacuumwhen plunging toilets. These don’t fit sinkdrains very well, though.
It’s also good to keep afew more tools aroundfor other plumbing-relat-ed work. While manyapartment managementcompanies will providemore than emergency re-pair — they’ll also installthe shower head you
want, or help with minorrepairs like drippingfaucets — some land-lords don’t provide morethan emergency service. So add these to yourplumbing toolkit:
• An adjustable wrenchand/or channel-lockingpliers, which can fit vary-ing widths of pipe.
• Flat-head andPhillips-head screw-drivers.
• An “offset” screwdriv-er to help you reachscrews at weird angles.
• Spare washers, o-rings and screws.
• Electrician’s or ducttape, and plastic or rub-ber sheeting that can becut to size and wrappedaround a leaky pipe fora temporary repairwhile waiting for thehandyman.
• Teflon pipe tape, usedto seal pipe threads.
If you’re interested orhave permission tomake more heavy-dutyadjustments or repairs, adding a couple of sizesof pipe wrenches to thetoolkit is helpful, as ispurchasing a valve-seat-ing tool, which cleansvalve seats of sinkfaucets (a handy tool
when fixing a leakyfaucet).

by Paul G. Donohue,M.D.Sometimes HeartburnCan Lead to CancerDEAR DR. DONOHUE:
For many years, I hadheartburn, and I livedwith it by taking thingslike Tums. Finally, I con-sulted a doctor, who re-ferred me to a gastroen-terologist because hewas alarmed at thelength of time I'd had it.The gastroenterologistgave me a scope examof my esophagus and
stomach. It turns out Ihave GERD and some-thing called Barrett'sesophagus, which turnsinto cancer. Naturally, Iam nervous. I've neverheard of heartburn-caused cancer. How of-ten does that happen? --A.S.
ANSWER: Not often, but enough that planshave to be made to keepchecking for such achange.
Heartburn is officiallycalled GERD, gastroe-
sophageal reflux dis-ease. Stomach acidsquirts upward (reflux-es) into the swallowingtube, the esophagus. The esophagus isn'tbuilt to deal with stom-ach acid the way thestomach is. The resultis heartburn.
Medicines for GERDare many. The onesmost often chosen areproton-pump in-hibitors, medicines thatall but turn off acidproduction. Theirnames are Prevacid(lansoprazole), Dexilant( d e x l a n s o p r a z o l e ) ,Prilosec (omeprazole),Nexium (esomeprazole),Protonix (pantoprazole)and Aciphex (rabepra-zole).
Up to 12 percent ofGERD patients, evenwith treatment, developBarrett's esophagus. The lining cells of thelower part of the esoph-agus change into onesthat are more resistantto stomach acid. Thatchange can evolve into
another transformationthat is precancerous. That's called dysplasia.Dysplasia can then be-come cancer. The ab-solute risk for this issmall, but it is real, andhas to be carefullylooked for.
If the Barrett's cellsshow signs of low-gradedysplasia, then a fol-low-up scope exam ofthe esophagus is donein six to 12 months andrepeated annually. Ifhigh-grade changes arefound, the scope examis repeated every sixmonths. If no dysplasiachanges are seen, fol-low-up exams arescheduled for everythree years.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE:I am a senior citizen. Forthe past five years Ihave received Botox in-jections and wonderwhere the Botox goes af-ter it leaves the injectionsite after about six orseven months. Does itstay in the body forever?
Does it go to an organ?Suddenly, I am wor-
ried about this. -- S.B.ANSWER: The body,
as it does with all in-jected medicines, breaks down Botox, and the breakdownproducts are eliminat-ed. It's the way naturetakes care of all foreignmaterials that find theirway into our bodies.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE:All my friends havemenstrual cycles thatlast 28 days. Mine don't.They vary from 23 to 34days. Is that normal?
I feel fine. I am 23 andactive. My periods arenot painful. -- J.F.
ANSWER: The aver-age menstrual cycle isone of 28 days. That'sonly an average. Thecycle can vary from 21to 35 days and still beconsidered normal.
Dr. Donohue regretsthat he is unable to an-swer individual letters, but he will incorporatethem in his columnwhenever possible.Readers may write himor request an orderform of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.

by Tom Turpin, Professorof Entomology, PurdueUniversity
Butterflies and mothsare some of the most rec-ognizable adult insects. They are common, andmany have large wingscovered with scales. Thescales come off easilywhen the insect istouched. These scales arethe basis for the wordLepidoptera — literally, scale wing. Lepidoptera isalso the name of the in-
sect order in which but-terflies and moths areclassified.
Scaly wings aren’t theonly characteristic thatbutterflies and mothshave in common. Bothtypes of insects have amouth called a proboscis.A proboscis is a coiledtube that functions muchlike a party blower. Theproboscis is extended toallow the insect to suckup liquids, such as nec-tar or water.
Moths and butterfliespossess fairly large eyes, with many lenses ineach eye.
Both types of insectsexhibit complete meta-morphosis, meaningthey have four lifestages: egg, larva, pupaand adult. Both butterflyand moth larvae arecalled caterpillars.
Caterpillars have awell-developed head anda cylindrical body, whichis made up of 13 seg-ments. Each of the threesegments behind thehead has a pair of legs, just like adult insects.
But caterpillars also havesome additional, fleshy,leg-like appendages —called prolegs — on othersegments. Prolegs havetiny hooks at the end thatfunction to grasp thingssuch as the stems andleaves of plants. That isalso why caterpillars cancling to your finger if youpick one up.
Another characteristicof Lepidoptera that cater-pillars possess is silkglands. These glands aremodified salivary glandsand are found in thecaterpillar’s mouth.Caterpillars sometimes
use silk they produce to
spin a cocoon. The bestknown of the cocoonspinners is the appropri-ately named silkworm.Silk is also used to tieleaves together to form ashelter, as tent caterpil-lars do. For others, silkbecomes a line on whichto suspend themselvesfrom the limb of a tree.
So scales, large com-pound eyes, a coiled pro-boscis and larval formscalled caterpillars areshared characteristics ofLepidoptera. But how domoths differ from butter-flies? Butterflies haveknobbed antennae;moths’ antennae lack aknob and are generallyfuzzy. Butterflies fly dur-ing daylight and most, but not all, moths are ac-tive only at night. Bodiesof butterflies tend to beslender while the bodiesof moths are likely to bestout.
There are some otherdifferences between but-terflies and moths aswell. In general, butter-flies, as a group, arebrighter-colored thanmoths. That is becauseall butterflies fly duringthe day when colors canbe seen. Moths tend to bedull-colored because theywant to hide during theday, when they are notactive. A few moths flyduring daylight hoursand, like butterflies, many of them exhibitbright colors.
How living butterfliesand moths hold theirwings is another clue asto which is which. Whenat rest, butterflies posi-tion their wings straightup over their body or
straight out to the side.
Moths fold their wingsback over their ab-domens.
Some moth caterpillarscan be described asfuzzy. One such fuzzy fel-low is called the wooly-bear caterpillar and hasbecome famous as a pre-dictor of winter severity. Not all moth caterpillarsare fuzzy, but no butter-fly caterpillars would bedescribed as fuzzy.
There are also somegeneral differences be-tween the pupae of but-terflies and moths. Mothpupae tend to be smoothand brown in color. But-terfly pupae are oftenbrighter colored; manyare sculptured and arecalled chrysalids. Ingeneral, moth pupae areencased in a cocoon. Butnot all. Some moths, such as adults of thewell-known tomatohornworms, are exam-ples. When a hornwormcaterpillar stops feedingon tomato plants, itcrawls into the soil andforms a pupation cham-ber. Here, it transformsinto a pupa withoutforming a cocoon.
So deciding if a scale-winged insect is a mothor butterfly is not alwaysan easy thing to do. Butif it is flying during theday, has knobbed anten-nae and rests with wingsstraight up or out to thesides, it is a butterfly. Ifit is flying at night or isat rest with wings foldedover the back, it is amoth. Otherwise, to besafe, you can always saysomething like, “Wow,look at that Lepidopter-an!”
