If a yarn is worth writing about once, then it
should be worth reading twice. We published Ed’s
yarn back on September 13, 2010.
While my friend Ed is a right upstanding sort of
fellow, on occasions he is apt to tell a yarn which
smacks more of Irish blarney. You can decide if
you can accept it as gospel truth, or if the truth
was helped out a little bit.
Ed tells this story, or yarn, in such a downright
serious manner, one could be tempted to become
a believer in his words.
“When we were young, our family was very poor.
Just to survive, Dad kept a cow for milk and
butter, a few hens for eggs and chicken dinners,
along with a few pigs. One night a thief broke into
the barn, stole some eggs and a couple of our
best laying hens and ventured further into the
pigpen and took a couple of piglets.
Both Dad and Mom were so sure it would
happen again, they moved the sow with her
piglets into our house for safekeeping.
For the next few years Mom would take the
table scraps along with leftover mixed pig rations
and feed the pigs in the cellar.
One morning, Mom slipped and got hurt on the
cellar stairs. Dad, being the inventive type, cut an
8-inch hole in the floor under the kitchen table.
After that we just tossed our scraps while we
were eating down through the hole to the pigs in
the cellar.
A busy-body type neighbor heard about the
pigs being kept in our cellar and called the Board
of Health. One day, a health agent showed up at
our door. Mom answered her knock which seemed
extra loud and sharp. There she stood in her gray
flannel suit holding her wooden cane, which had
been used to rap on our front door and asked if
the complaint about the pigs was true. ‘Oh yes!’
Mom said, and invited her in to see the pigs
through the hole under the kitchen table. To say
the least, the agent was flabbergasted and with
an all-knowing voice looking over her glasses and
down her nose to Mom asked, ‘Don’t you realize
how terribly unhealthy this is? It will cause all
kinds of disease and sickness.’ All Mom replied
was, ‘I don’t think so, we’ve been feeding the hogs
that way for several years and not one of the
pigs has ever gotten sick.’”
So — what has that got to do with the price
of milk or where a bread earner can find a job?
Is it possible that this is another example,
however humorous, of the government sticking its
nose into something that was none of its
business?
The assured facts are that the house and the
pigs belonged to Ed’s family. No pigs or people
ever came down with a life threatening disease,
and the pigs were fed and raised by Ed’s folks,
not the government.
We can also assume the government health
department lady was on the government payroll
and arrived at the family house by a car which
belonged to the government, using up tires, oil,
and gasoline paid for in part by Ed’s family and
other taxpayers.
Ed’s family did not request government
assistance or intervention or want any.
Naturally the not-needed or not-requested
government lady could expect a lifetime job with
healthcare and retirement. Statistics would
prove that her department and cost would grow
every year.
I ponder — is this not an appropriate example
of how our county, state and national
governments keep on sticking our unwanted,
unneeded noses into other countries’ business?
Where do we get the right to know what’s best
for them? How about this for a little pondering:
During the Second World War, Japan, Germany,
and Italy were our enemies. During the 1950s,
Japan, Germany, and Italy were wonderful friends
and allies. During the Second World War, the
Russians were our buddies and by the 1950s our
biggest enemy. It seems we cannot even figure
out who our friends are, yet we can teach them
how to manage their own countries by outfitting
them with a U.S. military base, lend or give them
huge amounts of money (money which we
borrowed), and feel we can sit in judgment.
Now we are faced with another problem: One of
our major U.S. political candidates is advocating
a bigger and naturally a more controlling
government.
The other political candidate claims he will cut
down the size of our federal government, reducing
cost and control over “we the people.”
Now to answer the question, what has this got
to do with the price of milk or where a bread
earner can find a job?
If we had fewer government paid employees
which cost U.S. businesses tons, the price of milk
could be lower and companies could have more
employees. United States corporations
presently pay the highest taxes in the world. It’s
a fact: higher taxes, fewer employees.
Soon it will be decision time. What form of
government do we want? Rather, what form of
government are you going to vote for?
It’s fall again with cool days and colder nights.
The leaves are turning more colorful every day.
Soon the geese will be flying overhead. You’ve
heard the expression, “Dumber than a goose!”
Guess who spends its summer in the beautiful
north and winters in the south? Don’t believe
everything you hear.
A fancy big touring car pulled up near an old
timer sitting on a stump near a cluster of
mailboxes and asked, “Have you lived here all your
life?” “Not yit,” was the reply. “Old timer, where
does this road go?” “Lived here for nigh-on-to 80
years and it hasn’t gone anywhere yet.” “Well
then, if you were going to go to Cooperstown,
which way would you turn?” “If I was going there, I
wouldn’t start from here.” “Well sir, which way
would you tell me not to go?” “If you go up this
road until you come to the Schenevus turn, I
wouldn’t go that way.”
“By the way, old timer, does Jim Morton live
here?” “Nope.” “Do you know where he lives?” “Yep,
he lives in that house over there.” “How long have
you known Jim?” “All my life.” “Do you think he
might be home now?” “Nope, he’s not and won’t be
for another hour or so.”
“Well thanks, old timer. We appreciate your help.
By the way, what’s your name?” “Glad I could help,
stranger. Come back again — my name is Jim
Morton.”
Today’s weather is overcast, wet and on the
chilly side, but if we wait for a few days this area
will be blessed with beautiful warmth and fall
colors. To be on the safe side — if you go for a
walk, take your bumbershoot with you.
Looking forward while being grateful for today is
a secret for happiness which God shares with all.
Prayer does work. I pray for you, your good
health, and for the future of this
nation. Our nation under God —
yours and mine. He is our God, and
this is our nation.

Electric baseboardheaters are zonal heaterscontrolled by thermo-stats located within eachroom. Baseboard heaterscontain electric heatingelements encased inmetal pipes. The pipes, surrounded by alu-minum fins to aid heattransfer, run the lengthof the baseboard heater’shousing, or cabinet. Asair within the heater iswarmed, it rises into theroom, and cooler air is
drawn into the bottom ofthe heater. Some heat isalso radiated from thepipe, fins, and housing.
Baseboard heaters areusually installed under-neath windows. There, the heater’s rising warmair counteracts fallingcool air from the coldwindow glass. Baseboardheaters are seldom locat-ed on interior walls be-cause standard heatingpractice is to supply heatat the home’s perimeter,
where the greatest heatloss occurs.
Baseboard heatersshould sit at least three-quarters of an inch (1.9centimeters) above thefloor or carpet. This is toallow the cooler air onthe floor to flow underand through the radiatorfins so it can be heated. The heater should alsofit tightly to the wall toprevent the warm airfrom convecting behindit and streaking the wall
with dust particles. The quality of base-
board heaters variesconsiderably. Cheapermodels can be noisy andoften give poor tempera-
ture control. Look for la-bels from Underwriter’sLaboratories (UL) andthe National ElectricalManufacturer’s Associa-tion (NEMA). Compare
warranties of the differ-ent models you are con-sidering.

Electric baseboard heaters
Selecting the appropri-ate solar energy systemdepends on factors suchas the site, design, andheating needs of your
house. Local covenantsmay restrict your op-tions; for example home-owner associations maynot allow you to installsolar collectors on cer-tain parts of your house(although many home-owners have been suc-cessful in challengingsuch covenants).
The local climate, thetype and efficiency of thecollector(s), and the col-lector area determinehow much heat a solarheating system can pro-vide. It is usually mosteconomical to design anactive system to provide40 to 80 percent of thehome’s heating needs.Systems providing lessthan 40 percent of ahome’s heat are rarelycost-effective exceptwhen using solar airheater collectors thatheat one or two roomsand require no heat stor-
age. A well-designed andinsulated home that in-corporates passive solarheating techniques willrequire a smaller andless costly heating sys-tem of any type, and mayneed very little supple-mental heat other thansolar.
Besides the fact thatdesigning an active sys-tem to supply enoughheat 100 percent of thetime is generally notpractical or cost-effec-tive, most building codesand mortgage lenders re-quire a back-up heatingsystem. Supplementaryor back-up systems sup-ply heat when the solarsystem cannot meetheating requirements.Backups can range froma wood stove to a con-ventional central heatingsystem.

(StatePoint) — Huntingseason is underway, andboth beginners and oldpros are gearing up foradventure. But even themost seasoned huntersdon’t know everything
about their sport. Hunt-ing can be dangerous, and experts warn that
there is such a thing asgetting too comfortablewith firearms.
“Everyone needs in-struction,” says David E.Petzal, co-host of theOutdoor Channel show
“The Gun Nuts” and co-author of the new Field &Stream book, The Total
Gun Manual: 335 Essen-tial Shooting Skills. “Ad-mitting what you don’tknow is actually one ofthe most crucial steps to-ward becoming an expertshooter and a saferhunter.”
With that in mind, Pet-zal and co-author PhilBourjaily are providingcrucial safety tips to any-one planning to go hunt-ing this season:
• Every time you see agun, pick one up or pointit, assume that it’s loadedand treat it accordingly.
• Make sure your safetyis always on and that thebarrel is pointing downwhen you are walking ortransporting your gun. When hunting with dogs,be sure the muzzle is lev-el with the ground at thevery least and preferablyangled up in the air.
• Never shoot at asound or movement. Beabsolutely sure thatyou’re shooting at an ani-mal and that no peopleare anywhere near yourtarget.
• Wear at least the re-quired amount of orangeso you don’t become an-other hunter’s target.
• Make sure all animalsare dead before strappingthem onto your vehicle.
• Wait until your kidsare old enough to under-stand and follow rules be-fore bringing them hunt-ing.
• Never climb a tree orover a fence with a loadedgun.
• Keep your finger off
the trigger until you’reready to shoot.
• Save those beers untilthe end of the day, it’sjust plain common sense.
• Look well beyond yourtarget before you shoot.High-powered ammuni-tion can travel up to threemiles and still be deadly.
• Hunt with a trustedbuddy. If you’re alone, make sure that someoneknows where you will beand when to expect youback. If you’re huntingwith an unsafe shooter, you don’t need an excuseto leave.
• If using a tree standto hunt, don’t forget towear a safety belt.
• Be sure all yourequipment is workingproperly and you knowhow to operate it beforehunting.
• Store and transportammunition separatelyfrom guns. Keep every-thing under lock and keywhen it’s not in use.
• It doesn’t take mucheffort to elevate yourheart rate into the dangerzone. Make sure you ex-ercise regularly for betterfitness on your hunt.
Thorough safety tips, buying guides and practi-cal gun handling advicecan be found in “The To-tal Gun Manual: 335 Es-sential Shooting Skills”by Phil Bourjaily andDavid Petzal. For moreinformation, visit Bour-jaily and Petzal’s blog,www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/gun-nut.

With fall upon us andthe days getting cooler, what a great time to getout and redo some ofthose flower beds that fal-tered this summer.Thinking about what toplant? Well, keep in mindour increasingly endan-gered pollinators. Thereare many native plantsthat feed our pollinatorsfrom early spring to latefall. Not sure what tochoose? The Natural Re-sources ConservationService (NRCS) is here tohelp.
“It doesn’t matter if youhave small flower bedaround your home or youare planting an acre,”says Ellen Starr, NRCSBiologist. “Keep these lit-tle guys in mind whenyou choose your plants.”Fall is considered thebest time of year to plantnative species of trees, shrubs, grasses, vinesand perennials. The term“native” refers to allspecies of plants that his-torically occurred in yourarea. There are manybenefits of native specieslike conserving water, nofertilizer or insecticidesneeded, protecting soilfrom erosion and creatinghabitat for wildlife. “It’spreferable to have threedifferent species in bloomthroughout the growingseason,” continues Starr.
A native plant gardenalso can supply a neigh-borhood, community or
countryside with beauti-ful flowers and raiseawareness about the im-portance of protectingand restoring localecosystems for futuregenerations. “Pollinatorslove native species,” saidStarr “and are the firstchoice for food.”
To help you know whatplants best suit your lo-cation, NRCS has devel-oped a Perilous Plight ofthe Pollinator brochureand fact sheets. The factsheets list native speciesbest suited to dry, moistor wet soils. The brochureand fact sheets can befound on line atwww.il.nrcs.usda.gov orcontact your local USDAService Center and askyour local NRCS employ-ee for a copy. They canalso help you with thetiming of seeding orplanting.
The USDA People’sGarden Initiative andKeep America Beautifulhave joined together toencourage Americans tosupport local ecosystemsby planting species nativeto their area this fall. Thefirst ever National Planti-ng Day took place onSept. 8 and will continuethrough Nov. 30. “Sodon’t delay! Get out thereand plant a flower, shrubor tree,” said Starr, “Nextyear you will reap thebenefits with color andmaybe see a butterfly, moth, hummingbird orbee that you haven’t seenbefore.”
