When Gene was an infant, his uncle, Franklin Winter, adopted him when Gene’s own father died. From that point on, Gene was immersed in boat building, as the elder Winter was the founder/co-owner of Tomahawk Boat Company from the mid-1940s into the 1960s. “Franklin Winter taught me to love wood cedar strip boats,” said Gene. “He taught me that being able to build or restore boats would provide for my retirement. “I’m not a purist,” Gene remarked. “I fix or restore boats so they can be used again and not just sit on a trailer in a garage.” Winter has a passion for restoring old boats and particularly loves working on Tomahawk and Rhinelander classic boats. He currently is working on a 1946 Tomahawk Scout cedar strip

boat that he obtained in the Swamp Lake area. Winter also is working on a Tomahawk Red Wing, the first one produced at the Tomahawk boat factory.

“I had to remove five coats of lead paint to get down to wood,” Winter shared. “The boats are

completely stripped down to good wood. I make my own

to fit various jobs and use them to remove punky wood to get to the good wood. This requires aggressive use of delicate, sharp tools. Franklin showed me that power tools aren’t needed for this, just hand tools. “I then bleach the wood and sand it smooth,” he added. “Any holes are filled with a mixture of epoxy and sawdust. Then the boat is sealed and varnished.” Early in the restoration process any old loose fiberglass is ripped off the hull and replaced with Kevlar or Dynel and epoxy. This material is very strong, according to Winter, and produces a “new car” finish. Winter works several hours per day on old boats above and beyond the time required to run his construction business. Since 1997 he has restored 14 boats and currently is working on a half dozen more. He estimates that it takes almost 500 hours to complete a boat project, which means that he averages about two boat restorations per year. Winter has 48 boats on site, several biding their time until a makeover can happen. He also has about 30 restored outboard motors and another 30 that need attention. “The novelty of restoring boats doesn’t decrease for me,” said Winter. “Something has to get done every day on these boats.” Winter’s plan for his restored boats and motors is to display them in a proposed muse-um to be built west of the SARA Park boat launch. He hopes to fill the future museum with beautiful Tomahawk, Rhinelander and other cedar strip, cedar plank and plywood classic recreational boats and antique outboard motors. “We have available a non-profit grant from Congressman Dave Obey and future

pledges from several private individuals. As the museum plan moves forward, we hope to get more people on board,” said Winter.

“If the Lord gives me the time and health, I’ll get through this restoration project. I have a long

way to go,” Winter concluded.

Three days of fun at St. Mary’s Parish fest

A weekend full of entertainment is in store during the St. Mary’s Parish Festival Friday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 1, on the parish grounds in Tomahawk.

Friday’s events run from 4 to 10 p.m. with a fish and shrimp boil from 4:30 p.m. until gone; music by TNT Karaoke, raffle sales, paddle wheel, family baskets and refreshments, with Windmill on Wheels ice cream.

Saturday’s fun runs from 3 to 10 p.m. Included are grilled pork chops and chicken breast dinners, as well as hot dogs; music by TNT Karaoke, pie garden, pokerino, kids’ games, raffles and family baskets.

Sunday features a 10 a.m. polka Mass, with a polka band and dance to follow. Between then and 2 p.m. there also will be Polish kielbasa with sauerkraut, beef sandwiches and salads; Windmill on Wheels ice cream, family baskets, raffles and kids’ activities.

The 68th annual Spirit-Hill-Ogema 4-H Fair will be held at the Spirit Town Hall Saturday, Aug. 7. The hall is located 10 miles east of Ogema on the north side of Hwy. 86.

4-Hers from the Hillbillies, Happy Hoboes and Wilson Workers clubs will be taking part in this year’s fair. The judging schedule is as follows: 8:45 a.m., Dogs; 9 a.m., In-hall exhibits; 9:15 a.m., Poultry, Rabbits and Small Animals; 10 a.m., Swine, Sheep, Goats and Cattle; 11 a.m., Horses.

A potluck dinner will be served in the basement of the Town Hall beginning at 11 a.m. Additional food items

including ice cream, soda, popcorn and candy will be for sale at family-friendly prices throughout the day.

Beginning at 1 p.m. there will be outdoor games for all ages including a frog-jumping contest, egg toss and tug-of-war.

All exhibits may leave the fairgrounds at 4 p.m. At 8 p.m. an evening program in the Town Hall will

feature entertainment by the participating 4-H clubs and presentation of trophies to the day’s winners.

Attention all gardeners! Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just learning, there’s a great opportunity for you to show off your creativity and gardening skills. Forth Floral of Rhinelander will be sponsoring a Container Garden Contest during the Oneida County Fair from Aug. 5-8. Your efforts will be rewarded as the contestant entries will be judged and the top three places will receive a cash prize. In addition, entries will be displayed on the fairgrounds in Rhinelander for all to enjoy.

You can make, buy or use any type of container. Plant it with flowers, grains, shrubs, trees or vegetables. Use your imagination! You could use an old bathtub and fill it with flowers or a handmade wheelbarrow planted with vegetables and grains.

Contestants must register at the Oneida County Fair 4-H Exhibit Area (tennis courts) by 9:45 am Thursday, Aug. 5 in order to be eligible. Container Gardens will be displayed at the fair by 10 a.m. Judging will be held approximately 3 p.m. All the entries will be on display at the fairgrounds through Aug. 8 for everyone to enjoy.

AOMCI shows off Aug. 4-7 at SARA Park meetBy Tom ColstadTomahawk Leader Sports [email protected] For the 31st year in a row, Tomahawk will host the Antique Outboard Motor Club International annual meet at SARA Park. The park is located at 900 W. Somo Ave. along Lake Mohawksin (Wisconsin River). The event generally draws hundreds of exhibitors, ven-dors and “classic” boat and motor aficionados from across the country and beyond. In years past, various outboard motor companies were featured in indoor displays in the indoor arena showing the progress made in form and performance. Likewise, various boat companies like Tomahawk Boat Manufacturing Company have been featured with examples of the watercraft on display. Along the nearly one-quarter-mile runway along the north side of SARA Park vendors show off their wares, both used and brand new. In the arena several gorgeous boats of varying types are highlighted together with an assortment of antique outboard motors. SARA Park offers a two-dock landing for ease of launch-ing the boats. During the course of the meet there are different on-water competitions for boats of all sizes and shapes. There also is a cruise of Lake Mohawksin and an exhibitors’ parade that offers spectators up-close views of the boats on the water. Many boats are secured along the shore of SARA Park, where some are offered for sale. Other boats for sale might be found in the meet’s “boat yard” where sellers can park boats and trailers. SARA Park offers camping on the grounds (no hook-ups)

for a modest daily fee. Showers and restrooms are available for campers’ use inside the arena. The Kwahamot Water Ski Club prepares and serves food for every day of the meet. The meet concludes with a banquet for the attendees. Highlights of the meet include – Thursday: 3.6 HP Modified Event, 10-11 a.m.; Modified Zephyr Event, 1-2 p.m.; 5HP Stock Johnson Event, 3-4 p.m.; boat parade around water ski show, 6 p.m.; Friday: Stock Zephyr Eliminations and Finals, 10-11 a.m.; Oldest Running Outboard Event, 2-3 p.m.; and Saturday: Predicted Log Event, 10-11 a.m.; and banquet, 6 p.m. For more information, contact Bob Dalle AVE at 715-356-5649 or [email protected].

The Nicolet College Outdoor Adventure Series offers a variety of activities to help people learn new outdoor skills and explore new places all across Wisconsin’s great Northwoods and beyond.

“These courses make the

outdoors much more accessible to people,” said Martha Schouweiler, Tomahawk, Outdoor Adventure Series coordinator. “Along with teaching the technical skills of an activity, we also teach people how to stay safe in the outdoors,

Explore through Nicolet College Outdoor Adventure Serieswhether that’s on a wildflower hike or sea kayaking from one island to another on Lake Superior.”

Adventures this year include numerous beginning and intermediate sea kayak and canoe classes and trips that range from basic instruction to such inviting excursions as Date Night via Kayak, Full Moon Paddle, Kayak with Kids and Paddle to Pizza. Destinations include the Apostle Islands, Isle Royale, Sylvania Wilderness, and numerous scenic lakes, rivers and flowages throughout the region.

Other outings include a full slate of nature study hikes that focus on birding, wildflowers and butterflies. These are in addition to collecting wild rice, mountain biking, yoga, turkey hunting, fly fishing, learning how to use a global positioning system (GPS) and traditional archery.

Classes are oriented for everyone from children to senior citizens. Each of the more than 60 courses is rated on a strenuosity scale from S1, which is likely a stationary experience, to S4, which requires good physical conditioning for challenging adventures.

Among just some of the many choices are:

•“Get Off the Road” Introductory Mountain Bike Instruction and Tour – Anvil Trails – Saturday, Aug. 28, 1-5 p.m., Eagle River area, with Sandra Lotto/Joe Panci instructing. If you’re like many people who own a fat tire bike, you may never have ridden it on anything more challenging than pavement or gravel. Want more adventure in your life? Maybe it’s time to “get off the road” and see what these bikes are built for. Begin with basic instruction on shifting and braking, learn skills for going over and around obstacles and practice on an obstacle course before going on a group ride on the Anvil Trails, east of Eagle River. They were developed in the U.S., back in the day of the Civilian Conservation Corps and are now on the National Register of Historic Places. Participants must provide their own fat tire bike and helmet. Fee: $25, level S3.

•Yoga, Sauna and Brunch in Nature – Saturday, Aug. 7, 9 a.m.-noon; also offered Wednesday, Aug. 11, 9 a.m.-noon, Lake Myrtle, Hazelhurst, with Melanie Lindert Panush, dance/yoga instructor. Revel in the simple pleasures and enjoy one hour of gentle Hatha yoga overlooking Lake Myrtle,

before indulging in a beautiful earthy white-cedar sauna, then head to the lake for a swim or paddle. A gourmet lunch will be served outdoors while observing eagles, loons and maybe an otter. Prerequisite: must be at least 11 years of age and know how to swim; sauna portion not recommended for those with heart or blood pressure issues. Fee: $33; level S1.

•Wild Guide, Wild Place, Wild Food (Apostle Islands National Lakeshore) – Friday-Saturday, Aug. 6-7, begins at noon on Friday in Bayfield and ends late afternoon Saturday. Guides: Jerry Gauld/Wes Doak/Martha Schouweiler. On the fall trip last year, the group stumbled across a man who had been hiking for 36 days with his dog. The retired 60-year-old heaving equipment operator planned on living off the land on a 517-mile backpacking trip across some of the most remote and beautiful country in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This adventure is designed to hear more about his stories as the group hikes with him and his dog, Molly. It might be easier to listen in a lecture hall, but it will be more of a memory-maker to camp under the stars, hike on a

beautiful island and eat wild food around a campfire. Fee includes ferry ride to the island, dinner and breakfast. Assistance with camping equipment if needed. Fee: $225; level S3.

•Nicolet National Forest Luna-White Deer Trail Hike – Sunday, Aug. 15, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., near Eagle River, with John Bates/Mary Burns. The Luna-White Deer Trail loops for about four miles along the shorelines of Lunda Lake and White Deer Lake through a mature northern hemlock-hardwood forest. The trail is reasonably level terrain, easy to hike. The group will go slow, poke around a lot and stop frequently to talk. While they won’t go very far, you will be on the trail most of the day. Fee: $28; level S3.

•Sea Kayaking The Sea Caves of Lake Superior – Wednesday, Aug. 18, Bayfield area, depart Nicolet Lakeland campus at 7 a.m., return after dark, with Paul Ehlers/Wil Losch. Centuries of wave action carved intricate caves into the sandstone cliffs of Lake Superior’s Apostle Island shoreline. Learn about the geology and, if the lake is tranquil, paddle in and out of the caves delicate arches, vaulted chambers, passageways and deepest recesses. Seven-mile paddle trip. Students must have completed a basic safety course. Fee: $60; $80 with kayak rental; level S4.

BILLY BOB’S RACKS UP RIB AWARDS: No ribbing, Billy Bob’s Sports Bar and Grill recently grilled the competition at the sixth annual Polish Palace Pig Out by taking first in all three categories relating to ribs at a cook-off held in Philips. The grill crew, pictured from left, Billy Eastwood, Robert Borem, Bill Eastwood and Gary Baguhn, brought home the Judge’s Choice, People’s Choice and Overall Trophy for their finger-licking ribs. The contest could be considered a warm-up, as Billy Bob’s prepares to take part in the Tomahawk Lions Club’s third annual Thrilla on the Grilla rib cook-off in downtown Tomahawk Aug. 14. Billy Bob’s will look to reclaim the title of baron of bones and sultan of sauce after winning the first Thrilla in 2008. Wet wipes will be optional, but those wanting to taste some of the best ribs around will want to have tickets in hand as the Lions Club hosts its third annual Thrilla on the Grilla rib cook-off in downtown Tomahawk Saturday, Aug. 14.

Eight local teams will compete in this year’s contest for the title of baron of bones and sultans of sauce. A sellout last year, the Lions Club is reminding those who would like to sample the best barbeque pork ribs available in the area to get their tickets in advance.

Lions Club member and event organizer Tom Kelley said along with being a great bargain (attendees get to taste mouth-watering ribs prepared by all contestants and are served a healthy side fixing of cole slaw and beans for just $12), the Thrilla also offers the perfect opportunity to support the community.

“It’s certainly a worthwhile event and a heck of a deal,” Kelley said, adding those attending also be treated to free chicken wing appetizers provided by the Lions Club and prepared by the contestants.

He noted proceeds from ticket sales go back to local non-profit organizations. Over the past two years thousands of dollars have been raised for local community organizations.

A five-piece band from Wausau will provide live entertainment and Tomahawk Main Street Inc. will have available sweet corn and snow cones. The Lions will be serving refreshments, including beer, as part of the afternoon event. American Legion Post 93 members will serve up the cole slaw and beans provided by the Lions.

While the entertainment and good cause are attractive side fixings to the Thrilla, the meat of the event is the barbeque ribs contestants will be grilling up and have available for tasting, which can take in upwards of 20 hours to prepare prior to the event.

Last year’s champion, the Happy Snapper team “Porker in the Pines” will be among groups again grilling for the top spot. The Billy Bob’s Sports Bar and Grill team “Bone Masters” will look to reclaim the title it won in 2008.

Judges this year include the creator of the Sweet Baby Ray’s gourmet sauce, Larry Raymond, Tom Lecht and recently crowned Pow Wow Queen Meka Pennington.

Packaging Corporation of America’s “We’re the Best, Forget the Rest” team will defend its People’s Choice Award from last year. Also returning for a shot at the crown are teams from Harley-Davidson, Big Moose Supper Club and Nelson’s County Market.

Two new teams are joining the competition including the Arnold Ziffel and the Smoke House Boys team from Fuzzy’s Auto and Smoker’s Meats and a crew from the Lions themselves, dubbed “Bonus Maximus.”

Along with the Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice, awards will be presented for the best wings and best overall presentation.

Chicken wing appetizers will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with ribs to follow from 1 to 4 p.m.

As part of the day’s entertainment, the Lions Club will have Lions Lotto lottery tickets available, and the postponed Fourth of July fireworks show will take place at SARA Park at dusk.

Tickets to the Thrilla can be purchased in advance at any participating business or at Tomahawk Community Bank, Nelson’s County Market and the Tomahawk Regional Chamber of Commerce.

it is time to do it! Returning to a vacation home after a long absence? Your water heater, and your water quality will benefit from draining the water heater as part of opening up your cabin for the summer.

It’s easy to drain your own water heater once you know how, and with a few easily found supplies. You will need:

• A hose to attach to the water heater drain• Possibly a lighter to re-ignite the pilot of your gas water heater

The Steps:1) Turn off the energy supply to the water heater. Electric and oil water heaters

have breaker boxes near the heater or are on a breaker or located in a fuse box. Gas water heaters have controls at the bottom of the tank.

2) Turn the control to pilot before draining. IMPORTANT: Do not turn energy on while the tank is empty.

3) Turn off the water supply to the water heater. Usually a valve is located above the heater; if not, the main water valve will have to be turned off.

4) Attach a hose to the water heater’s drain and open the drain valve. Also open hot water taps upstairs to allow air to enter and water to leave. If the water won’t drain out, open the pressure relief valve at the top or on the side of the water heater. It will take about an hour for the water heater to drain.

5) Close the drain and turn on the water after the water heater is empty. When the heater is full, water will run at all the hot water taps. Allow this to run for 10-20 minutes, then shut off all the hot water taps.

6) Turn the energy supply back on, but ONLY after the water heater is full of water. It will take about an hour for the water to heat up. Gas heaters sometimes need to have the pilot re-ignited.

7) Repeat annually. Water heaters are steel tanks and steel will rust while in contact with the water over a long period of time. Draining your water heater will assure you of the same quality of water in your hot as in your cold water.
