Councilman Nowakowski and the Phoenix Public Library invites young artists in kindergarten through eighth grade to submit original artwork for a new children’s book by Sasha and Rodney Glassman, “Jeremy Jackrabbit Recycles the Can.” Artwork will be selected to illustrate the book to be published by the Glassmans and released on Earth Day, April 22, 2013. More than 46,000 copies of the book will be distributed free of charge – one for every kindergarten student in Maricopa County. Young artists may enter up to two drawings in any medium. Illustrations may be in color or black and white, but may not exceed 11 x 17 inches. Artwork may be submitted to any Phoenix Public Library location October 1 - 31. The text of the book, contest entry forms, and additional information are available at phoenixpubliclibrary.org/kids.
The City of Phoenix is launching its annual "Shop
Phoenix!" campaign, asking residents to "Show Us How
You Shop Phoenix!" Ready to bite into a burger from
your favorite Phoenix restaurant, just purchased a new
car or getting starting on holiday shopping? Photograph
the moment at your favorite restaurant, auto dealership,
local business or mall, tell us where you like to "Shop
Phoenix!" and email us the photo.
Through the end of December, residents can "Show Us
How You Shop Phoenix!" by submitting photos of
places to shop, eat or visit in Phoenix. Send photos as an
attachment to [email protected] with "Shop
Phoenix!" in the subject line. Photos will be featured in a
photo album on the city's Facebook page, and the top
photo each week will be the city's Facebook cover photo.
Sales taxes on the merchandise purchased at businesses
in Phoenix go directly to the city's General Fund, which
pays for city services such as police and fire protection,
parks, libraries, senior centers, neighborhood
preservation, neighborhood clean up and street
maintenance.
The largest revenue component for funding our city’s
basic services is sales tax, it accounts for 39 percent of
General Fund revenues. By shopping in Phoenix,
residents have a direct impact to support the city services
they enjoy.

Service Line Protection Program The city is participating in the National League of Cities Service Line Protection Program, provided by business partner Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA). SLWA offers residents optional sewer and water line warranties, covering sewer lines from the private property line to the connection to the home and water lines from the meter to the connection to the home. The first campaign is for sewer lines. The agreement with SLWA is part of the city’s Marketing Partnership Program, generating revenue for city programs and services, with no cost to the city. The Service Line Protection Program was developed through the city’s Innovation and Efficiency efforts, which are nearing $50 million in savings and efficiencies. “Phoenix continues to look for a variety of ways to partner with businesses and help our residents,” said City Manager David Cavazos. “The city will receive an estimated $400,000 from the program, just in the first year. That helps us provide crucial services like police, fire, parks, libraries and senior centers.” SLWA is mailing letters to Phoenix residents with program details. The cost for the sewer line program is $6 a month, and the company bills residents directly. Nearly 99% of homeowners filing claims have received free repairs or replacements. Other city partners include Atlanta, Milwaukee, San Diego, Kansas City and Avondale. This is a voluntary program, for individuals that want the extra protection against sewer and water line breaks. For more information or to enroll in the Service Line Protection Program, call SLWA at 1-866-922-9006, or visit www.slwofa.com. City Council established the Marketing Partnership program to identify and implement mutually beneficial business partnerships and generate revenue for city programs and services. The first partnership, a prescription drug discount card through Coast2CoastRx, has generated $124,000 and saved residents more than $5.6 million. The two partnerships will raise an estimated $500,000 this fiscal year. For more information, visit phoenix.gov/bizpartners.
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board has created an Ad Hoc Committee of golfers, Phoenix residents, board Members and Citizens Golf Advisory Committee members to conduct public meetings to discuss the city’s golf program in light of the ongoing deficit of its golf courses. We have created a webpage on the golf website at phoenix.gov/golf that allows you to submit comments and view comprehensive information on the Phoenix golf fund, including a study by the Phoenix Budget and Research Department. The meeting for Laveen will be at the Cesar Chavez Library on Tuesday, October 9 at 6:00pm.

Correctly planting a tree is more complicated than just digging a hole. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, through an inter-agency collaboration, is offering two free tree planting and care workshops to teach residents the right way to choose, plant and care for trees. In addition to planting and care techniques, participants in the three-hour workshops also will learn how to choose the right tree for the right location, which is crucial to trees’ long-term health. Students also will learn how properly chosen and planted trees can reduce energy bills and increase home values. In addition, the workshop at Maryvale Community Center will be held in Spanish and English. All workshops are from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshops are free, but registration is required. Participants can sign up by emailing [email protected] or by calling (602) 261-8810. Oct. 6, Maryvale Community Center, 4420 N. 51st Ave.
