fifth sunday in lent sung eucharist 7 april 2019 welcome · for now you reign above. since there...
TRANSCRIPT
Welcome A warm welcome to all who are worshipping with us
on this Fifth Sunday in Lent. Today we honour the
generous actions of Mary, the sister of Lazarus. She
showed her love and gratitude towards Jesus by pouring
an expensive bottle of oil over his feet. We can’t pour
perfumed oil on Jesus’ feet, so how do we thank him and
remember him?
If you are visiting or new to St Luke’s, please make
yourself known as we would like to make you
feel at home with us. Please also join us for
morning tea in the Lower Hall at the conclusion
of the service. Some further information which
should assist you in your time here at St Luke’s
is set out on the next page, together with the
names of people we are holding in prayer at this
time.
In our service this morning, the Reverend Peter
Kurti, Associate Priest, will be Presiding; I will
be assisting as Deacon and Natalie McDonald,
Lay Minister, will be Preaching.
The Reverend Dr Max Wood,
Rector
Please use in conjunction with the red “Together in Song” (TiS) Hymn book.
During the season of Lent we will be singing the communion setting by
Michael Dudman (1938-1994).

The Lenten Prose
To thee, Redeemer, on thy throne of glory:
lift we our weeping eyes in holy pleadings:
listen, O Jesu, to our supplications. *R
O thou chief corner-stone, right hand of the Father:
Way of salvation, gate of life celestial:
cleanse thou our sinful souls from all defilement. *R
God, we implore thee, in thy glory seated:
bow down and hearken to thy weeping children:
pity and pardon all our grievous trespasses. *R
Sins oft committed now we lay before thee:
with true contrition, now no more we veil them:
grant us, Redeemer, loving absolution. *R
Innocent, captive, taken unresisting:
falsely accused, and for sinners sentenced,
save us, we pray thee, Jesu our Redeemer. *R
Greeting
Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins,
whose mercy endures forever.
The Lord be with you
And also with you.
Lenten Candle Liturgy
Presider: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
The Lord is a great God, O that today you would listen to his
voice. Harden not your hearts.
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
4
Deacon: Blessed are those who have endured temptation; they have stood the
test and will receive the crown of life.
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
Presider: I am the light of the world, says the Lord, whoever follows me will
have the light of life.
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
Deacon: Your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.
The next Lenten candle is now extinguished and a period of silence is observed.
The following is then said:
All: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal,
have mercy on us.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal,
have mercy on us.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal,
have mercy on us.
Kids@Church
The Presider says:
I invite children and accompanying adults who are going to Kids@Church, to come
forward to the chancel steps.
The Presider continues:
Children of God, today at Kids@Church, you will be learning about the story of
Mary’s loving present to Jesus. So may God bless you and fill your hearts with
love, so that you show his love and goodness in all you do. Amen.

Invitation to Confession and Absolution
Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have
rebelled and wandered far off.
Silence may be kept.
Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.
Merciful God,
our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
6
Almighty God,
who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith:
pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness
and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect
Christ,
whose feet were caressed
with perfume and a woman’s hair,
you humbly took a basin and towel
and washed the feet of your friends:
wash us also in your tenderness,
that, embracing your service freely,
we may accept no other allegiance.
We ask this in your name. Amen.

The First Reading Ninny Park
A Reading from the book of Isaiah
Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who
brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they
are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or
consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you
not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The
wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the
wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom
I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.
[Isaiah 43.16-21]

The Second Reading
A reading from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians
For it is we who are the circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and boast
in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh - even though I, too, have
reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else has reason to be confident in the
flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of
Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a
Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law,
blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because
of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing
value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all
things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found
in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one
that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I
want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his
sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the
resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already
reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made
me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one
thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I
press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
[Philippians 3.3-14]

When Mary poured a rich perfume (Tune: Forest Green - TiS 316)
When Mary poured a rich perfume
on Jesus' weary feet,
Her caring filled that humble room;
the fragrance there was sweet.
But full of anger, Judas said,
"We could have used this more!
Why was her gift not sold instead
and given to the poor?"
8
The Lord replied, "Leave her alone!
She bought it for this day.
This caring love that she has shown
is faithful to God's way.
The poor will always be with you,
but you will not have me."
He blessed her and he thanked her, too,
for giving lavishly.
O Christ, what can your people bring
to show you thanks and love?
You need no fragrant offering;
for now you reign above.
Since there will never cease to be
the poor throughout the land,
May we, your church, serve faithfully
by offering them our hand.
The Gospel Reading
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory.
The Lord has done great things for us:
and we are glad, indeed.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John, Chapter 12,
beginning at the 1st verse. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom
he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and
Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly
perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair.
The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of
his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume
not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this
9
not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the
common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her
alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You
always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
[John 12.1-8]
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sermon - Natalie McDonald, Lay Minister
The Creed
Let us stand and join together in the words of the Nicene Creed.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
10
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the Community Heather Chisholm

Let us pray for the world and for the church.
Response after each segment of prayers
Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer
After the last petition
Hear us, Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Greeting of Peace
Please stand
Since we are justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has given us access to his grace.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
We exchange the greeting of peace
The Offertory
Offertory Hymn
We sing the praise of him who died - TiS 347 (Tune: Bow Brickhill)
11
The Presider continues
Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation.
Through your goodness we have these gifts to share.
Accept and use our offerings for your glory
and for the service of your kingdom.
Blessed be God for ever.
The Great Thanksgiving
Please remain standing
The Sursum Corda
We sing together
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
The Presider continues
All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere,
mighty Creator, everliving God.
We give you thanks and praise for your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary
and lived as one of us.
He was tempted in every way as we are,
yet he did not sin.
By his death on the cross
and rising to new life,
he offered the one true sacrifice for sin
and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people.
12
By his grace we are able
to triumph over every evil,
and to walk in the way of his love.
Therefore with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we proclaim your great and glorious name,
for ever praising you and singing:
Merciful God, we thank you
for these gifts of your creation,
this bread and wine,
and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,
we who eat and drink them
may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.
On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread;
and when he had given you thanks
he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.’
After supper he took the cup,
and again giving you thanks
he gave it to his disciples, saying,
‘Drink from this, all of you.
This is my blood of the new covenant
shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’
13
Deacon: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded:
proclaiming his offering of himself
made once for all upon the cross,
his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,
and looking for his coming again,
we celebrate, with this bread and this cup,
his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice
for the sins of the whole world.
Renew us by your Holy Spirit,
unite us in the body of your Son,
and bring us with all your people
into the joy of your eternal kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
with whom, and in whom,
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
we worship you, Father,
in songs of never-ending praise:
14
As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread and the Communion
The Presider breaks the bread and says:
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body
For we all share in the one bread.
Please sit to sing the Agnus Dei:
The Gifts of God for the people of God. Come, let us take this
holy sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts
by faith with thanksgiving. Amen.
Please be seated to listen to the choir sing the
Communion Anthem
Pange Lingua (Plainsong)

The Sending Out of God’s People
Compassionate and loving God,
through your Son Jesus Christ you have fed us
and have reconciled your people to yourself.
Following his example of fasting and prayer,
may we obey you with willing hearts
and serve one another in holy love.
Father,
we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory.
