VIEW FROM THE VICE

COMMODORE

Nancy Knobbs

Sometimes Timing

is Everything Our recent ECSA event was the Cocoaville Cruise

(formerly the Pinedaville/Rotary Park Cruise) held at

Lee Wenner Park near the Cocoa Village anchorage.

The spacious pavilion provided plenty of tables and

seating, as well as a pretty impressive brick grill,

though to use the venue after sunset one must supply

their own lighting. We had Joe Coleman and Chris

Calder and others who strung some lights and basical-

ly McGiver’d the required lighting, which worked well.

The event was well attended and there was a variety

of delicious side dishes to accompany the Mee Maws’

BBQ. Some came by boat and utilized the dinghy

dock near the boat launch and others came by what-

ever mode of transportation could get them there, car,

foot, etc.

Several attendees were new members, which we are

always happy to see, and some were guest sailors

who are readying their boats for transit to new loca-

tions. Friends from Canada, Jamie and Miriam, had

just returned south from Toronto to Indian Town to

take their Gossard 31 off the hard and provision for a

trip to Cuba. The November edition of Good Old Boat

magazine features an article on Jamie and Miriam’s

Gossard. Local Melbourne sailor Joe Cloidt, who is a

new contributor to Good Old Boat, wrote the article.

Our Canadian friends’ return coincided with our ECSA

Cocoaville potluck and the launch of an Atlas V rocket

carrying a new GOES-R weather satellite. It made for

an opportunity to meet with other sailors to discuss

and compare long-range sailing plans, and to further

our outreach to include not only ECSA members in our

cruising activities but to invite and include other sail-

ors, to enrich our experiences, share our knowledge,

and spark that desire to sail farther. This event ac-

complished those things and culminated with a terrific

view of a successful nighttime launch. Sometimes,

timing is everything.

Happy Cruising!

THOUGHTS FROM YOUR

COMMODORE

Joe Coleman

End of the Year First, I must apologize for the lack of a program at last

month’s meeting. I had arranged for Woody from Eau

Gallie Marine to talk to us about fixing the lower end of

small outboard engines. We had a great turn out of

members to hear him, but unfortunately we had no

speaker. I had called the day before to ensure that

they knew the time and place, and I am still not sure

what happened after that. I will follow up with them

and hope to reschedule the program in the future.

December’s meeting is a pot luck event. No, it’s not

marijuana, just good food with great friends. We will

also vote on the new Board for the upcoming year and

set a cruising calendar for 2017. The voting will take

place during a very short business meeting prior to

eating, and during dessert we will discuss the cruising

schedule. If there is a cruise that you want to see on

the schedule, please speak up and let us know.

The Christmas boat parade will be here before we

know it, and again the Hutson’s have graciously of-

fered their home for the party. Page Proffitt assures

me that the Melbourne Yacht Club is going to provide

a keg and, as usual, the ECSA will provide the main

course. Participants are asked to bring side dishes,

including desserts.

Thanksgiving is over and now it is wintertime in Flori-

da. That means it is time to winterize your boats for

the coming season. Karen and I do that by breaking

out the stuffed Santa and reindeer and placing them in

the saloon of the boat. We will stay “winterized” until

shortly after Christmas day, then back in the attic the

decorations go as we head south to celebrate New

Year’s Eve at the Vero Beach City Marina.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone happy holi-

days from the Board of the East Coast Sailing Associ-

ation. May your new year be prosperous, filled with

good times and good health!

Come Sail With Us!

We will be at Ballard Park for another Frostbite

Cruise on January 14. We will have the grills going

about 5 p.m., so bring your entrée to cook, your bev-

erage of choice, and a side dish to share.

The pavilion is full of picnic tables and, if necessary,

we will set up a wind screen. There is likely to be

music as well.

If we’re lucky, the cruise will NOT live up to its name!

For more information, contact Page at 321-806-

SSCA GAM Report

Although the Seven Seas Cruising Association GAM was not as well

attended as usual this year, the ECSA volunteers provided the same

outstanding support that we always have given them.

I would like to thank all those members for donating their time in support of

both the SSCA and ECSA. I hope that those who volunteered had a good

time and will plan to do it again next year.

The SSCA donated $220 to the club in appreciation for our support. Our

store manager, Tom O’Shea, also sold several siphons at the ECSA table.

Good job by all participants.

The 2017 Cruise Calendar will be discussed at the

December general meeting. Come and make your prefer-

ences known!

ECSA Previous Events: Boy Scout Island spon-

sored by Jennifer Clendinen on October 15th and

16th was cancelled as the island was under water

and she had sick children. Cherie and Robert Baird

had a Halloween Party and invited ECSA and MYC

members. A good time was had by all.

ECSA Upcoming Events: The SSCA GAM is No-

vember 11–13th. “Cocoaville” at Lee Wenner Park in

Cocoa is November 19th and 20th. Please anchor

south of the powerlines and dinghy in. Please lock

your dinghy. We have the pavilion from 2 p.m. until

9 p.m. The Board will supply the main meat dish.

Please bring a dish to share and your choice of bev-

erage. This is the last Participation Award event this

year. ECSA/MYC Boat Parade is December 17th.

More details to follow. New Year’s Eve Cruise to

Vero – get your dockage reservations in now.

Elected Governor Bob Wiley: Photo contest en-

tries need to be made by Christmas. The Participa-

tion Award results are being kept for attending cer-

tain key club meetings, for photos submitted and

certain event participation. They are ending soon.

Old Business: None

New Business: Jennifer Clendinen asked if any-

one did not receive their 2016 ECSA Directory.

Doug Worth and Tom O’Shea gave reports of the

progress on getting their boats and docks repaired.

The $45 50/50 raffle was won by Steve Netschke.

The meeting adjourned at 7:48 pm.

Refreshments were served. Unfortunately, we did

not have the presentation as the speakers did not

make it to the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Gail Oliver, Secretary

Cocoaville Cruise Review Due to a mix-up at the Brevard County Recreation De-

partment, our “Pinedaville” cruise destination, Rotary

Park, was booked to someone else this year. That put

the Board into a bit of a panic. The old Pinedaville

beach has been too overgrown in recent years, so is no

longer a desirable place to go. We didn’t want to make

it another restaurant cruise and we didn’t want to go to

Ballard Park because we will be there in January. Then

Mary Ann O’Shea recommended Lee Wenner Park in

Cocoa Village, where there is a pavilion, rest rooms,

running water and lighting.

When I went to the Cocoa Recreation Department to

book it, I was informed that there were no lights, no

power, and they close the park at 6:00 p.m. Feeling

that my back was against the wall, I went ahead and

reserved it. As usual, the attending members pitched in

with music and lights (there was a power source) - and

even a space launch. The park did not close at 6:00

p.m. and we all had a great time.

The SSCA had donated pulled pork sandwiches to us,

and attendees provided the tasty sides and desserts.

Thanks to all who helped and attended. It turned out to

be a great cruise.
