The manoeuvres opened with long­and short-range anti-aircraft shoots inwhich the Iroquois took the top scorefor accuracy.

The next day, the Royal Fleet Auxil­iary Fort Rosalie substituted for an' air­craft carrier and the destroyers exer-.cised carrier screening duties.

The exercises reached their peak witha dawn torpedo attack by the destroyerson an "enemy cruiser", which was at-

.' tempting to escape at the reduced speedof 25 knots after having been damagedby aircraft. The destroyers were tomake contact with the enemy in dark­ness, shadow her until dawn and attackwith torpedoes. The objectives of theexercises were met and· a successful at­tack was macte at daybreak in roughweather.

Night plotting and night formation~xercises, plus officer-bf-the-watch man­oeuvres and a jackstay transfer ofdocuments, were also carried out.

The Iroquois, relieved by the Cayuga,began the New Year by sailing for herhome port of Halifax by' way of HongKong, Singapore, the Mediterranean and

. the Azores.

The last two shipments of naval am­munition in 1953 were made to Norwayand Portugal late in December underthe Mutual Aid arrangement of theNorth Atlantic Treaty.

For delivery to Norway were 150,000rounds of 20mm Oerlikon cartridges and2,000 rounds of four-inch quick-firingcartridges, to a total weight of 148 tons.Portugal received 900 hedgehog projec­tiles totalling 40! tons.

Previous shipments of ammunitionfrom RCN reserve stocks were madelast year to Denmark, The Netherlands,France, Norway, portugal and theUnited Kingdom.

Two more squadrons will be estab­lished in 1954, at Quebec City andCalgary.

Three SquadronsIn Air Reserve

Three Reserve Air Squadrons are nowin existence, their function being tobring air training to naval divisionsacross Canada.

The success of VC 920, attached toHMCS York and operating from RCAFStation, Downview, outside of Toronto,throughout most of 1953, assured theformation of additional reserve squad­rons.

The two new ones are VC 921, at­tached to HMCS Cataraqui and flyingfrom Norman Rogers Airfield at King­ton, Ont., and VC 922, serving HMCSMalahat, the Victoria division, withPatricia Bay Airfield as its base. Allthree squadrons are equipped withHarvard 2A trainers.

New Minesweeper8Form Sqlwdron

The First Canadian MinesweepingSquadron came into being in the Atlan­tic Command in December and nowconsists of four ships.

Formed initially of the Gaspe andChignecto, the squadron has since beenjoined by the Cowichan and Thunder.The squadron commander is Lieut.-Cdr,Bruce Carnall, commanding officer ofthe Gaspe.

All ships of the group are brand-newminesweepers of wood and aluminumconstruction.

The S2F is the first comparativelysmall aircraft capable of meeting themodern requirements of aerial anti-sub­marine warfare. It is highly manoeu­verable, has a short take-off run andlow landing speed, and at the same time .. ' ~is able to carryall of the weapons con­sidered necessary for the efficient per­formance of the anti-submarine searchand attack role.

The S2F is a fast, all-weather air­craft, and its acquisition will com­plete the change-over of RCN squadronsto new type aircraft. As was announcedearlier, arrangements are being madewith the U.S. Navy to purchase F2H3Banshee all-weather jet fighters for theNavy's carrier-borne fighter squadrons.

cided to fortify it.Although only a· quarter-century old,

the port again proved its strategicimportance when the American coloniesrevolted in 1775. The harbour bUStledwith men-of-war and captured shipswere brought back constantly as prizesof war. After the loss of the Americancolonies, Halifax became the princi­pal naval base of continental NorthAmerica. '

As such, its fame as a naval base andconvoy port was to grow more brilliantwith each succeeding war.

A story told al).d retold in Halifax isthat of HMS Shannon which sailed fromHalifax during the war of 1812-15 to en­gage the American frigate, USS Chesa­peake in one of the shortest and mostbrilliant single-ship actions in history..

On the Shannon~s first patrol off theport of Boston, a challenge was sent tothe 'commanding officer of the Americanship to "come out and fight". On June1, 1813, before the horrified eyes ofthe Boston townsfolk who had gatheredon the beaches expecting an Americanvictor:y, the Shannon brilliantly .out­ma~reuvred and outfought her enemy.

,Eleven minutes after the engagementbegan the British ensign was hoistedabove that of the Chesapeake.'

When the Shannon returned to Hali­fax with her battered p~ize,the seniorunwounded officer was the young sec­ond lieutenant. He was Provo WilliamWallis, born in Halifax and de~tinedto become Admiral, of the Fleet in theRoyal Navy.

For some time the dockyard wentinto a decline but in later years jettieswere built, more buildings erected andthe many necessary facilities provided.Although only a summer station, theLords of the Admiralty recognized theimportance of Halifax as a port in theprotection of the main lines of com­munication between the various parts ofthe growing Empire.

However, in 1905, with no war cloudsdimming the outlook, the RN was with­drawn completely from Halifax. In thenext two years the dockyard sufferedfrom neglect until negotiations beganbetween the British and· CanadianGovernments for the latter to take overthe dockyard. That was the birth ofthe Royal Canadian Navy.

When it was formally taken over in1910 by the Canadian Government, thedockyard was kept the same as whenthe British left. There was no imme­diate need for expansion, since with theformation of the Royal Canadian Navyonly two cruisers had been purchased,and only one, HMCS Niobe, was basedthere. In fact two years later the Niobewas laid up.

It was for a short time only. Wa'engulfed Europe in 1914 and the dock­yard experienced a rapid growth as thefledgling Canadian Navy played an in­creasingly important role in the anti­submarine war and convoy escort. Notonly was it headquarters for the Cana­dian Navy which had added cruisers,trawlers, drifters, torpedo boats andauxiliary vessels to its strength, but itserved also as American headquartersfor the Royal Navy.

The great explosion of 1917 demol­ished many of its buildings, and in theirplace others were quickly erected asthe first big facelifting occurred. How­ever, a year later the Armistice wassigned and the government of the timeadopted a retrenchment policy whichreduced the ranks of the Navy to apoint where only a skeleton staff main­tained the dockyard.

When it was taken over in 1910 thedockyard contained a Naval hospital,victualling stores, coal stores, work­shops, blacksmith shop, three slipways,five jetties, some residences and 75 otherbuildings. When the destroyers Cham­plain and Vancouver were acquired in1928, the place again began to hum asmen and machines were required tomaintain the ships.

However, it was not until 1939, aswar again spread across Europe, thatany great change took place. Almostovernight the original dockyard dis- ..al?peared as a new, greater yard took itsplace.

Its boundaries were extended bothnorth and south to their present limits

and still there wasn't enough room. Tocope with the seemingly illimitabledemands of the war,' the Navy pur­chased the French Cable Companyproperty in North Dartmouth. In 1942the Army Ordnance Depot, also in NorthDartmouth, was acquired and a hugetract of land on the east side of Bedfordbasin was made an ammunition storagedump.

Almost every building that stood inthe dockyard in 1939 was razed and in­stead modern brick and concrete build­ings sprang up at an amazing rate. Thearea of the dockyard alone now encom­passed some 50 acres. The OrdnanceDepot - renamed Naval ArmamentDepot-added another 15 acres; theFrench Cable Company brought inanother nine acres; biggest acquisitionwas the property on which the navalmagazine was built-1,255 acres.

In 1943 the Navy acquired additionalproperty at Renous in New Brunswick,about 20 miles from Newcastle,' whereanother naval magazine was erected toaugment the Halifax depot. The oldArmy Gun Wharf near downtown Hali­fax became the Central VictuallingDepot; at Albro Lake, northeast ofDartmouth, and at Newport Corners, 37miles north west of Halifax, propertywas purchased and two powerful short­wave radio transmitters were erectedfor communication with the ships atsea.

By 1943 just about every availablespace had been used for building.Among those erected were the dock­yard administration building, to whichtwo wings were later added: "Scotian"building, operated as. a barracks duringthe war, and now housing the offices ofthe Flag Officer Atlantic Coast andHMCS Scotian, naval division in Hali­fax; a machine shop, stores buildingsand a host of others, quite a number ofwhich were temporary and were torndown after the war.

More than' 30,000 ships sailed to orfrom Halifax in convoy during the waryears. Scores of warships were to beseen alongside the jetties at any timeas they were refitted and repaired foranother turn at sea. Altogether hun­dreds of Canadian, British, Americanand other allied warships - from thegreatest battleships to the smallestminesweepers-operated from this port.

Today the dockyard presents an effi­cient, business-like appearance, with themodern buildings sprawled back of itsalmost mile-long water frontage. HaIf­a-hundred buildings stand within itsboundaries. Although the immediatepost-war years saw a natural decline innaval activity, the decision to build andmaintain a hard-hitting anti-submarinenavy has brought its full facilities intouse again.

As well as a place to berth warships,the dockyard supplies many repair and

Promotionis not a question of 'jqbs for the boys'-'--it is a competition ,of service in theinterests of the Navy and the country."

The second fallacy was that a goodseaman was necessarily a good officer.,The foundation of a naval officer's ex­perience must be his seamanship, but.the wider his knowledge and the broaderhis outlook the more easily he wouldshoulder responsibilities,

"Why is it, do you suppose, that ex­perienced people are chosen for respon­sible jobs?' It is because in makingdecisions they are able to draw on thisexperience, which will prevent themmaking mistakes."

He referred to tp.e third fallacy "withtrepidation". "It is contained in thefamousprearoble to the Naval DisciplineAct and reads: 'Whereon under thegood proVidence of God the we,alth,safety and strength, of the kingdomchiefly depend . ..' That was certainlytrue at the time it was written.' Butthesa.fety o{ this country, Common­wea~th and Empire can only be ac-"complished by' action at sea, on landand'in the air. " ,

To the north of it is the French CableWharf and property. where four build­ings stand on nine acres of ground, andwhere seaward' defence 'equipment­submarine nets, buoys, mines, mine­sweeping equipment, and a host of othergear-is stored and maintained.

Bedford Magazine, covering 1,255acres with 102 buildings, is the navy'sready use ammunition depot. The mainstorage is at Renous and the Bedfordmagazine, acts, as the feeder tq the fleet.

A new Seaward defence base is underconstruction between Pier "B" and theyacht squadron anchorage in the city'ssouth end. The base includes a, jettyand various ,buildings whose details areclassified.. A large ,fleet of yardcraft operates'from the dockyard. It is a "navy withina navy" which includes a fleet rangingfrom small harbour craft to tankers andsupply ships. Tugs of all sizes, indud­jng ocean-going, vessels, are maintained'and operated under the blue ensign.

The friendly co-operation of the shipsof many nations in the Korean' wartheatre was an aspect of the struggleagainst aggression there which will belong remembered.

Among the warships with which theCanadian destroyers came into frequentcontact (and whose ship's company pro­vided stitr competition in track and fieldevents ashore) was the Royal Nether­lands Navy's destroyer Piet Hein.

An account of a "train busting" ex­pedition up tlle east coast of Korea inJuly, 1952, in which the Piet Hein andU.S. warships participated has been pre­pared by Lieut.-Cdr. C. J. M. Kretsch­mer de Wilde, of the Royal NetherlandsNavy's historical section. Extracts fromthe article will recall to the officers andmen of the Royal Canadian Navy, whoserved in Korean waters, many similarincidents in which they played a part.

The story begins:Like grey shadows, the ships of Task

Force 95 were moving restlessly alongthe east coast of Korea, as they block­aded the important cities of Chongjinand Songjin, cutting them off from out­side assistance from seaward, or provid­ing harassing and interdiction fire, lay­ing their HE shells on railroad crossings,bridges and tunnels. The Piet Hein,early in the evening, left the formationnear the Yang-Do islands and steereda southern course, south of Songjin, op­posite one of the many railroad tunnels.

Only the night before, USS Orleckhad been fortunate enough to catch atrain loaded with war supplies, just asit passed a railroad crossing. The de­stroyer's broadsides had poured into thedoomed train, wrecking it thoroughly.Aircraft were called up to finish thejob. They did so in grand style, strew­ing bombs lavishly and laying the tar­get completely in ashes.

As usual, a warship was stationed offthe spot to prevent repair parties fromclearing the line. That night, USS En­dicott had been assigned to the job and,from the Piet Hein, her star shells couldclearly be seen.

The Piet Hein's company welcomedthe Orleck's successful action, but -would,of course, rather have been the luckyones themselves.

The railroad crossing at which theNetherlands ship was going to have alook that night was only seven milesnorth of the place where the Endicottwas standing guard. As the Piet Hein'sfirst star shells illuminated the area,everyone peered intently, hoping to dis­cover the outlines of another train,Nothing could be seen and the PietHein shaped course southward, steer­ing in a wide curve around the Endi­cott.. whose star shells were casting amacabre light over the devastated area,

At 2130, somewhat more inland, nearthe village of Tansen, flashes weresighted, which gave the impression of

coming from welding torches. As arailway bridge was known to be in thatvicinity, Commander A: H. W. von Frey­tag Drabbe ordered a brief harassingfire. After ten HE shells had landedneatly on the target, the supposed enemyrepair party might be guessed to havehad enough. Anyhow, no more flasheswere seen and on went the Piet Hein,hunting other game.

Half an hour later her star shellsilluminated a third railroad crossing,but everything remained quiet and thearea seemed to be entirely deserted.

The next morning at 0630, the PietHein took over from the Endicott. Nowit was her turn to prevent the enemyfrom clearing the line. Orders werenot. to hit the train any more, as thiswould. only help the enemy to clearaway the wreckage. However, as sooften pappens if something is forbidden,one of the first rounds was a full hiton the remnants of the train!

"Right into the first-class compart­ment!" remarked one of the cooks, whowas taking the air on deck. "Am Ilucky, always travelling third class."

The following shots were rangednicely around the train and the tunnelentrance where, it was suspected, re­pair groups were awaiting their chanceto get to work and clear away thewreckage.

Just to make sure they were reallythere, the commanding officer resortedto a ruse. After some severe firing, thePiet Hein set course to the south, as ifshe were leaving the area. Then, whenonly a few miles off, she suddenly re­turned at full speed, firing everythingshe had.

The captain had guessed right. Quitea few human figures could be seen run­ning frantically along the line, in adesperate attempt to reach the shelter­ing tunnel. Some of' them never reachedit. For them the war was over.. The action was heartening for thepompom team, who rarely had a chanceto bring their guns into action.

At 1245 cease-fire was ordered. HerNetherlands Majesty's Ship Piet Heinshaped course for Yang-Do - and, al­though the communists may have hadtheir doubts as to whether she hadreally gone, this time it was no joking!

After a year in existence, the' Corn­wallis Navy Radio Players are able tolook back over months of continuingsuccess.

The group was form.ed in Cornwallisin January; 1953, and is composed ofCommunication School officers and theirwives. 1t was" formed principally to

provide entertainment and social relaxa­tion for its members, but its short car­eer already has brougb;t pleasure tomany others.

A complete study .is made by thegroup of radiobr,oalllCF\sttng techniquesfrom the acting, Production and scriptinterpretation i:>oint of view. ,

The originator and founder of theclub is Commissioned Officer (SB)Harold Hargreaves, who has had 15year's experience in radio script andplay writing and also in the prQductionand direction of radio plays. Many ofhis plays have been produced on theBBe and CBC networks. Mr. Har­greaves has written several radioscripts solely for the group Which heformed. '

In the past year, the group has madeseveral public appearance to raise fundsfor worthy organiZationS. The first ofthese was in a variety shOW in the Corn­wallis Recreation Centre to help raisemoney for the Cornwallis Home andSchool Association.

More recently, the group appeared aspart of another variety show given inYarmouth to raise funds for the Yar­mouth Sea Cadet organization. It isinteresting to note that radio publicityand advertising for the Yarmouth showwas given in exchange fOr eight taped

children's broadcasts and one live broad­cast by the group and that all playswere written by Mr. Hargreaves. '

At a recent meeting of the ProvincialDrama Grou.ps, in Annapolis Royal, thegroup was asked to present a programdealing with broadcasting techniquesand the whys and wherefores of soundeffects. The program was extremelysuccessfui and gave rise to the opinionthat groups ()f this nature might spreadthroughout the Maritimes.

Toronto's naval reserve was estab­lished in 1923 and was known as "TheToronto I-Ialf Company, Royal Cana­dian Naval Volunteer Reserve".

The first commanding officer wasLieut. ...Cdr. Gordon Burgess Jackson,RCNVR. In 1927, Lieut-Cdr. Andrew D.MacLean, RCNVR, became the com­rnanding officer and in the followingyear, the unit was renamed "TheToronto Company". Commander WilliamGeoffrey Sheddon, RCNVR, was ap­pointed in command in 19~1. Four yearslater the unit was reclassified to"division."

In 1940, Commander Alfred CharlesTurner, RCNVR, headed the TorontoDivision with the unit recommissioningin 1941 as HMCS York. From 1942 to

The Minister of NationalDefence for· Naval Services and hisDeputy Minister were, under the originalconstitution, actually members of theNaval Board and in this respect theBoard was broadly analogous to theBoard of Admiralty. After the war,however, when the three Armed Ser­vices were pIa ced under a single Mini­ster of National Defence. and tri-serviceco-ordination in the administrative fieldwa's introduced, a new "chain of com­mand" was established.

The duties of the Naval Board, as nowlaid down in ORCN, are "the formula­tion of navnl policy and the co-ordina­tion and integration of all branches ofthe Navy".

Before descl'ibing the present positionand functions .of the Naval Board, it~vill be helpful to outline briefly the or­ganization now in effect at NationalDefence Headq uarters. The Departmentof National Defence has a double func­tion, nmnely:

(a) It is the central organ of admini­stration for the three Services.

(11) It is a civil department of statewhich, under the direction of theMinister, l'eflects and contributesto Government policy.'

Under the National Defence Act, theMinister has "the control and manage­ment of the Canadian Forces, theDdence Research Board and of all mat­teI's relating to national defence includ­ing preparation for civil defence againstenemy action, and is responsible for theconstruction and maintenance of alldefence establishments and wOl-ks forthe defence of Canada."*

He is advised in administrative mat­teI's conC'erning all three Services by aDefence Council, composed of theMinister (as Chairman). the DeputyMinister. the Associate Deputy Minis­ters; 111e three Chiefs of Staff and theChairman' of the Defence ResearchBoard. Each directorate at Naval Headquar­leI'S is responsible to a particular Board·Illember who represents it at the highestnaval level. The Chief of the NavalStaff in his relationship to Naval Boardoccupies a special position in that he,personally, is the [lUthority responsibleI'm' the decisions made in the name ofNaval Board. While all this was going on, tefresh- .'ments were continuously available and'at noon a vast supply of ,mammoth hotdogs and hamburgers appeared to givethe club boys a busy time at the bar­becue pits trying .to keep up with Cana­cnan appetites.

The Canadian sailors impressedeveryone they rnetby their courtesy andcheerfulness.. There were no officers atthe Sun Life party bitt discipline wasperfect.

A Busy Ship .... But SheNever Goes to Sea·

Life aboard the Navy's first ap...prenticeship training ship offers avariety of oddities and peculiaritiesnot found in the ordinary "run-of­the-mill" ships.

For one thing, the sick bay tiffie hasvery few cases of seasickness (thanksto Jetty "0") but is always on handfor Captain's and Executive Officer'srequestment and defaulters "just incase".

The reason for this predicament isthat Sick Bay seems to be the spacemost readily available (perhaps themost logica1) for this time-honouredceremony.

To enter the unique lO,OOO-ton struc­ture that is the Cape Breton, you makeyour way painfully up 29 (not thefamous 39) steps under a canopiedscaffolding. Then if the rip-roaringdowndraft does not get you, the quar­termaster surely will, as you emergefrom the conventional gangway (levelat high tides).

Once this hazardous feat has beenaccomplished, you find yourself infriendly, spacious surroundings on thequarter-deck which is well forward inthis ship. From this point you cancontinue in a straight line to our sistership, the Cape Scott, or you can turnsharp left and go aft in the Cape Breton.

The aroma of fish and chips willprobably detain you at the quarter­master's lobby long enough for you toget a scuttle view of the wardroom andante-room.

Past the cabin flats, and you reallyget an idea of the immensity of theCape Breton. You could, of course, popinto the galley right about here and godown on the dumb waiter with the soup,but if your patience holds out you willfind ample hatchways and ladders toreach the heart of the ship. If youchoose the ladder on the after deck be­tween sick bay and the shipwright'sshop, an ominous roar greets you atthe. bottom. Don't let that worry you,however, it's only the four diesels and .generators sounding off in the nextdeck below. Let the schoolmaster anddraughting instructor outshout them intheir classrooms above.

Let's go further aft, past the Chiefand POs' mess and sleeping quarters,

and you will find the array of admini­strative offices where the supply officerwill be glad to see you.

Now retrace your steps. If you turnright, the MAA or the chief stoker willget you, or the dumb waiter will offeran irresistable temptation to your pal­ate. If you turn left, your journey willtake you past the maintenance mess andwashrooms. In either case you willemerge into the vast cafeteria where thewaiting line-up at the canteen can't helpbut see summaries of world affairs andthe progress report of BCA pasted tothe noticeboard on the bulkhead.

By this time, you will appreciate thecomfortable chairs of the apprentices'mess-deck, or, by veering over to theright, perhaps you will be lucky enoughto take in one of the showings at thetheatre. Mind you, it may be "The Red­head from Wyoming" or "Handsaws andTheir Uses", but you are welcome.

If you are still in the walking mood,the apprentices' recreation space up for­ward will not let you by for right nextdoor you can select the book of yourchoice from the small but rapidly-grow-'ing reference and recreational library.If you can get by ,Zane Grey just lookon the left and there you will tinatreatises all the way from "Jane's Fight­ing Ships" to "the Incredible Canadian".

Go back to the SRE and projectionroom portion of the theatre. Clang!Bang! SlaIn! That's the machine shopright below. As you reach this hiveof industry, the first thing you willhear is "Thank heavens, I've finishedthat block at last!" "What's wrong, son,don't you like filing?" "Oh, it's allright, but there's a limit to everything!"

Right, lad. What do you supposethose machines are for? Now you. canreally see what this apprenticeshipscheme is about. What a machine shop!Just look at that heap of brass shavingsover there! Someone has been doingsome turning. What are you going todo with that stuff? Well, let's go do,vninto the real bowels of the -ship and see.

This combinedstriking fleet headed for the south Den­mark Straits while the convoy andsupport group proceeded to Reykjavikwhere the oilers :md other vessels couldreplenish, Submarine activity was briskas they "fought" their way to port afterwhich the Magnijice'nt and screen turnedon their assailants as a hunter-killergroup until the supply vessels came outagain two days later.

The Algonquin, which by this timehad made' a name for herself as an effec­tive AjS escort, joined her convoy withother vessels in the Channel and com­bined with the Swansea in two separateattacks on U-boats during October 1.

Mariner ended at noon on October 4and the ships scattered for the Mediter­ranean, the United Kingdom and Ice­land.

ports, followed by exercises off London­derry with the Magnificent. The Quebecmeanwhile sailed from Scotland forhome. She was the first of the five toarrive back in Halifax, on October 19,and the Algonquin was last to reachhome port, on November 15.

During Mariner, the Magnificent's air­craft flew 15 of the 19 days. Avengersand Sea Furies flew 357 sorties and thehelicopter was airborne 88 times. Theship's mileage was 6,500 in the exerciseand 14,975 for the whole cruise. Marinermileage and cruise mileage for the otherships were: Quebec, 4,725 and 7,075;Algonquin, 2,600 and 11,500 and the fri­gates, about 2,800 miles each and morethan 9,500 miles each.

Canadian commanders were pleasedwith experience gained during Marinerwhich, in the words of CommodoreRayner, paid a "handsome dividend forthe heavy investment of forces". A'secondary Mariner' aim had been themaximum operational training of com­manders of units, which applied es­pecially to their exercise roles. Moralein the "Maggie" was "the highest ever"and all hands gave an "extremely goodaccount of themselves". "Essential ex­perience of the greatest value" resultingfrom working with many other shipsand aircraft was coupled with invalu­able training" gained from the pro­longed period at sea. Captain Finch­Noyes regarded the Quebec's part as"extremely successful and beneficial toall concerned. In two weeks of continu­ous steaming, often under heavyweather conditions, all departments weretested and stood up remarkably well."

Royal Navy's KoreanRole Summarized

Statistics on the role of the RoyalNavy in the Korean war were issuedby the Admlnalty 111. November, cover­ing the three years fighmng was inprogress there.

The summary says that during Ko­rean. operations, ships of the Com­monwealth navies fired 23,000 six-inchshells and 148,000 rounds of 4·7-inchor four-inch ammunition in. action.

Alrcmft of the Fleet A1r Armdropped 15,200 bombs of various sizesand fired 57,600 three-inch rockets and3,300,000 rounds of 20mm ammunition.

The Admiralty estimated that 17,000officers and men of the Royal Navy,Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Aux­iliary Service served afloat in Koreanwaters during hostiliUeg and a further4,300 were on duty ashore in Japan.Decorations were awarded to 16, and289 were menJt10ned in despatches.Casualties totalled 182.

The 33 British warships on. Koreanduty steamed a total of 2,100,500 mileson operations.

Singing

Canadian sailors made a completelyunscheduled and informal contributionto the Coronation Day proceedings­and in so doing made for themselvesand their service a good many admirers.

It was at the Buckingham Palace endof The Mall, in the early afternoon, thatthis took place. It was raining hard,nothing was happening or was due tohappen for quite a while and it wasquite evident that spirits of many onthe crowded sidewalks and in the standswere beginning to droop.

Then a block of Canadian sailors inone of the stands, began to sing "Alouet­te", "The Old Gray Mare" - most ofthe old stand-bys. Soon others werejoining in and in short order there wasa noticeable uplift in the spirits of thecrowd.

The rain ceased for a spell and theColdstream Guards band began to playfurther up The Mall. It was too faraway for those in this particular sectionto hear very well, however, and thesailors, thinking this unfair, began tochant, "We want music! We wantmusic!"

Results came almost at once, from thepipe band of the Scots Guards who werelining the street across from the Cana­dians' stand. The stirring music of the

pipes and drums watmed the crowd still,more, and the Scots received a rousinghand.

Then the rain came again, the Scotsretired and the sing-song was resumed.The sailors finished by shouting, "Atewe downhearted? No!"

The. sturdy Scots took this as a chal­lenge, uncovered their instruments andbegan to play once more, even thoughit was "raining about as hard as it hadrained all day.

By the time they had finished andthe sailors had sung a few more songs,the head of the procession was not faraway. An afternoon that had threat­el~ed to drag uncomfortably had passedquickly, after pll.

The next week wasspent in exercises, training and paint­ing ship both at sea and at anchor inGrassy Bay. It was all work for every­one aboard, but it was enjoyed in theexcellent weather. .

.The last weekend' at Bermuda 'wasspent alongside at Hamilton. Here theship was'well received and a good timewas had by all.

Early in November the Micmac leftfor Brooklyn, still carrying out train­ing pro~edures. Three glorious dayswere spent' at that port and everyonehad an opportunity to buy Christmaspresents and see the sights. . .

Returning to Halifax, the Micmac hasnow settled inta:·fuer·-'new role and theship's company has hung out its sign"Open for Business';.

HMCS Algonquin

The A Loonquin, following her returnfrom Londonderry, North Ireland, spenta very busy week in ·Montreal duringthe latter part of October. On twooccasions while there she flew the flagof the Naval Board and later, whileunderway, flew the Naval Board flag tosignify the presence of the Minister of

One broad blackband at the top of the funnel" andthe numeral "One" underneath signifythat this newly modernized destroyerescort is the senior ship of the recentlyorganize<:'l. First Canadian Escort Squad­ron. Later in the day she was joinedby' the Prestonian and the two shipssailed for work-ups and evaluationtrials;

On November 18 the Admiral's flagwas struck and several days later theAlgonquin and Prestoniltn sailed to takeup station on the flight path of HerMajesty's plane from Newfoundlflnd toBermuda.. After.. ;Gompleting this mis­sion, and, following a brief fuelling stop.8t Bermuda, the two ships sailed for'home and a well-earned leave and main­lenance period at Halifax.

HMCS La Hulloise

During September and October HMCSLa Hl~!loise took' part in exercises inthe United Kingdom. In late Septem­ber she operated out of Plymouth, Eng­land, in. company with HMCS Swansea.in Exercise Mariner. Activities for the

La Hulloise were confined mostly tothe western approaches of the EnglishChannel but the "Fighting Lady" man­aged to .claim one confirmed submarine.

Ea.rly in October the La HuHoisejoined other units of the RCN, HMCShips Magnificent, ALgonquin and Swan­sea, at Londonderry, Northern Ireland,and partiCipated in anti-submarine ex­ercises with the Royal Navy.

Returning to "Canada the La HuHoisespent a somewhat rough crossing dur­ing which a few miserable days wereexperienced by all concerned... The pas­sage,.however, was climaxed by a regalentry into Halifax harbour flying a"paying off" pendant 520 feet long.Her commission lasted just a monthshort of four years and she spent thelas't two years on cadet training cruisesduring which time she steamed 75,000miles in 22 months.

With the retirement of the "Lady"for her well deserved rest, the majorityof the ship.'s company have since com­missioned the Lauzon at Sorel, Queb~c.

Those who have served in the LaHtiHoise will remember her as an effi­cient, hard-working andh~ppy ship.

HMCS Wallaceburg

During the 1952 training season, whi~hcommenced in April, the WaHaceburgwas employed primarily in the trainingof c.lasses of offic.ersand men from theTAS School at Stadacona.

The Wallaceburg operated with shipsand submarines of both the Royal Navyand the United States Navy.

caused by a faulty refrigerator, per­mitted a leave period to be squeezed in.

In the second week of September theWaHaceburg took part in Exercise Cor­dex II before sailing once again forBermuda.

The WaHaceburg entered HM Dock­yard, Ireland Island, on the morning ofSeptember 17 to wait out the reported65-mile-an-hour gales which accom­panied hurricane Edna on her wild,witch-like flight through the Bermudaarea.

By 1800 the watches had beendoubled and the ship prepared withevery means of line and fender avail­able for the onslaught. Shortly before2230, gales reached 85 with gusts to130 miles an hour. Constant attentionwas paid to the fenders as the ship wasbuffeted against the jetty.

The wind, which had been on thebeam throughout the evening, beganveering by 2300, resulting in consider­able strain on the lines. The wind shiftwas a relief, as the ship was fast losingher fenders. At the height of the galeit was barely possible to keep one'sfooting and more than once dark humanshapes were seen clinging to bollardson the jetty. By 0100 the gale hadsubsided sufficiently to revert to singlewatches. The following morning, Ber­muda papers declared that "Edna" wasno lady.

On her return to Halifax, the Wal­laceburg proceeded to St. Margaret'sBay to paint ship, prior to embarking

While at Bermuda, a three-day in­formal visit was paid to Hamilton. Forthe remainder of the time the ship wasemployed in anti-submarine training forTDs and a JOTLC class. Trials werealso conducted by Naval Research.

Reviewing thc ship's training sincelast June, it is observed that 41 officers(11 Reserve) and 109 rilen (32 Reserve)were borne for training.

In the sports field, three ball gameswere played against the Wal.1.aceburgand swimming was participated in threeor four times daily when the ship wasalongside.

The Admiral's inspection of the sta­tion was held on November 16. Duringhis visit to the station, Rear-Admiral R.E. S. Bidwell presented three of thestation's personnel with Coronationmedals. They were CPO Charles W.Bourgeois, CPO Ronald E. Fenwick andPO Garfield Charles.

TAS SchoolThe TAS School is now in the midst

of the winter training schedule. Witha large number of normal daily classesunder way, the nights are utilized fortraining reserve personnel. Masset Naval Radio StationThe Masset radio station was hon­

oured in August with an informalinspection by the Chief of the NavalStaff, Vice-Admiral E. R. .Mainguy. Ad­miral Mainguy later wrote from NavalHeadquarters that he envied all mem­bers of the station the hunting and fish­ing paradise in which they live.

An established entertainment routinehas been developed for the station.Movies are held each Friday eveningand a dance onCe a month. A Hal­lowe'en costume dance was a mostsuccessful ~ffair. Prizes for the bestcostumes went to a station guest, Mrs.,F.Steele, and to Ldg. Sea. N. R.Lamorie. Special mention for a jobwell done is in order for PO C. H.Walker, the organizer, AB W. T. Jack­son, the master of ceremonies, AB T.E. Chapman, the canteen manager, ABG. R. Ward, for decorative posters, andLdg, Sea, Lamorie, for refreshments.

The weather in Masset is frequently"wet" and this factor has frequentlyprevented many outdoor activities fromtaking place. Hunters and fishermencan enjoy themselves at times. Severalnimrods on the station staff took ad­vantage of the "no limit" deer bagallowed in the Queen Charlotte Islands.

On Sunday, November 8, a Remem­brance Day church parade was held.A special service was conducted byRev. Montague S. Young in St. Paul'sChurch. All naval personnel and mem­bers of Canadian Legion Branch No.244 attended the service. At the con­clusion of the service and in the pres­ence of the congregation, CPO G. W.Pinard was formally presented with aCoronation Medal by Commissioned Of­ficer (SB) D. W. Smith, Officer-in­Charge, Naval Radio Station, Masset.

The Third Modified Ordnance Tech­nicians Qualifying Course completed atthe Ordnance School on October 20.This was the last modified course andwas made up of Chief Petty OfficersJohn Anslow, Thomas Angus, RobertLangont, David Clarke, Cecil Moore,John Underdown, Leslie Eyland, Rich­ard Tyler, Ernest Edmonds and AlexSchimp.

With this course completed, the or­ganizing of the Second Ordnance Tech­nicians Qualifying Course to startwas undertaken. The first 11 C2s tojoin the class were Chief Petty OfficersRonald Street, John Grahame, JohnPinkney, Russel Knight, Chester Padget,Elwood MacDonald, James Guise, EldonControy, William Currie, Leonard Lam­bert and Denis Berry.

The fourth Armourer's Mate Quali­fying Course got under way November16 with seven men in the class. Withone exception, all came straight fromCornwallis. The class consists of Or­dinary Seamen Robert Czop, CliffordNearing, Dale Lyngard, Kendall Sparkes,Harold Hopkinson, Edward Brophy andJean Marcoux.

The fifth Ordnance Officers QualifyingCourse has also started and consists ofLieut.-Cdr. W. J. Reynolds and Lieut.Walter Bulani.

CPO Arnold Parkinson left the schooland was drafted to the discharge centre.This completed 25 years service for

"Parky" and he was missed by all, andespecially by the children at Christmastime, who knew him for his portrayalof Santa Claus.

A lot of' changes are taking place inthe school personnel. P9 Norman Townhas joined the Sault Ste. Marie. ChiefPetty Officers Munro Brookes and Don­ald Ross, and Petty Officers LawrenceOrton and Norman Jones have gone tothe Ontario. Alc/ergrove Rac/io StationChristmas activities began for Alder­

grove personnel on Sunday, December20, with a special Christmas serviceat the Aldergrove United Church. TheCommand Chaplain (P), Rev. HarryPloughman, officiated and was assistedby the station's officiating clergyman,Rev. H. 1. Hare. There was a goodattendance of naval personnel, withtheir families and friends.

The children's Christmas party washeld on board on December 22. Morethan 56 children were presented withgifts by Santa Claus and there was anabundance of good things to eat anddrink.

Excavation and general preparationsfor the construction of this station's newrecreational building are under way, andpersonnel are looking forward eagerly.to its completion.

Recent arrivals at the station haveincluded PO Boyd Hutchinson and ABRobert Purgavie, from Naden, and ABThomas Earl, from the Beacon Hill.

Departures have included CPO ErnestSargeant, to the Sioux, CPO DonaldWaring, to Naden, and AB George Ross,to the New Glasgow.

The plaque, executed inoak, carries a brass plate enscribed:"Dedicated by Rev. Louis Dougan as atestament to the men of the Royal Cana­dian Navy and in memory of those whomet death in service".

This altar, in the chapel of St. Dunstan's Uni·versity, Charlottetown, P.E.I., is dedicated as amemorial to those who served and died in theRoyal Canadian Navy.

Santa (PO ,Peter Turner)arrived by way of a specially-builtchimney on the drill deck. The enter­tainment program was followed by re­freshments and candy.

An interesting event of the closingweeks of the year at Cabot was thepresentation of Corona'tion medals tothree members of the division by HisHonour' the Lieutenant-Governor of

'Newfoundland, Sir Leonard C. Outer­bridge.

The recipients were Commander F.A. O'Dea, commanding officer, CPO J; H.Brown and AB A. G.Rose. After theparade, receptiOns were held, in thewardroom ,and messes of Cabot, at­tended 'by both RCAF and RCN person­nel, the1r wives and friends. SirLeonard paid an informal call to theseamen's mess and chatted with manyof the men.

By the end of the summer, trainingseason, 35 officers, men' and Wrens fromCabot had spent time training at theGreat Lakes Training Centre, Stada-

,cdna, Cornwallis, or Shearwater. 'rhreemen were on the Coronation cruise.

This was in addition to the trainingpJ:ovided by HMCS Revelstoke, the 105­foot minesweeper, which has served astender to Cabot for the past three years.

Last summer, under the temporarycommand of Lieut.-Cdr. C. A. Bin­more, the Revels,toke covered severalhundred miles, visiting coastal points ofinterest, including places where newly­established Sea Cadet corps are flourish­ing. These short daytime, overnight orweekend cruises provided practical sea

,training for reserve and regular forcepersonnel alike.

The Revelstoke even touched on "for­eign shores'\ paying a brief call to New­foundland's friendly French neighbourson the islands of St. Pierre andMiquelon.·

In all" some 30 officers, men andWrens spent a total of 230 days on boardthe Re'l)elstoke during the summer.

Much to nobody's surprise, StadaconaSailors won the Nova Scotia SeniorCanadian Football title last fall aftergoing through the formality of drub­bing Dalhousie University Tigers 39 - 0.Thus the Purdy Trophy rests again ina showcase at Stad gym after an ab­sence of two seasons.

The Sailors sailed through the sche­dule undefeated, with the phenomenalscoring record of 279 points to 41 ineight games-four of which were shut­outs for the barracks.

AB Robert Hayes, flashy Stadback;was awarded the Duffus Trophy(league's most valuable player) andthe Milovick Memorial Trophy (leaguehigh scorer). Ldg. Sea. Ed. McLeod(team captain) was presented with thePurdy hardware in presentations afterthe game, which had drawn a recordcrowd of about 3,000.

The TAS School has wrested the Cockof the Barracks trophy for inter-depart­mental summer sports at Stadaconafrom the Supply Department by amargin of 20! points. Supply had heldit since its introduction in 1952.

It was· a neck-and-neck race for thefinish, TAS earlier overcoming a seven­point deficit with a grand burst ofenergy which carried them throughthe final events, resulting in a new roostfor the Cock.

Lieut. Frederick G. Henshaw gainedsecond place in the cross-country racefor the TAS School and a third placewas won in the shuttle relay. Theseand later points in the program sparkedthe march to victory.

The Daringscan be used tactically as light cruisers, destroyers, anti-submarine frigates or anti-aircraft ships.They displace more than 3,500 tons, full load, and have power-driven main armament. Vast changes in warship design andconstruction and in the tactical opera­tions of naval fleets are forecast in theforeword to the 1953-54 issue of Jane'sFighting Ships, published recently inCanada by McGraw-Hill Company ofCanada Limited, Toronto.

"This issue", says Jane's "marks theintroduction of three new developmentswhich may ultimately have far-reachingeffects on the composition of navies andtheir operations. These developmentsare atomic propulsion, ship specializa­tion, and guided missiles."

The application of nuclear energy"will make sea power more formidablethan ever before by giving every vesselso equipped the capacity for travellingvast distances without refuelling. Theconstruction of the first atomic poweredvessels, namely the large United Statessubmarines Nautilus and Sea Wolf.marks the beginning of a new era ofpropulsion which can have far-reachingeffects not only in the field of navalarchitecture but also on military strategyin general and naval tactics in particu­lar."

Jane's notes an increasing trendtoward the design of specialized war-

ships. as opposed to general purposeships. Great Britain, for example, isbuilding four different types of frigatesand in the U.S. Navy there are fourdistinct sub-classes of aircraft carrier-attack, support, hunter-killer andescort types. A further example is theanti-submarine destroyer escort underconstruction for the RCN.

The development of guided missileshas reached the stage where the U.S.Navy is now ready to operate themfrom aircraft carriers, battleships,cruisers, submarines and seaplane tend­ers. Jane's foresees the time whensuch missiles will be fitted with atomicwarheads.

The 1953-54 issue contains a quantityof new photographs and more completedescriptions of a number of ships andship classes. Among the more interest­ing of these are Britain's "Daring ClassShips" and gas turbine torpedo/gun­boats, and the U.S. Navy's super-car­riers, tactical command ship Northamp­ton and destroyer leader Norfolk.

The Russian section is somewhat morereserved than in past issues. It reportsthat some 370 submarines are in ser­vice or reserve, with another 100 under

construction in Soviet dockyards. Thelatter include versions of the GermanType XXI and Type XXIII.

For the first time since the war thereis a German section, divided into twoparts-West and East. German shipslisted include patrol vessels, minesweep­ers and auxiliary craft.

Warships which served in the RoyalCanadian Navy during the Second WorldWar keep turning up in odd corners ofthe world, an inspection of the pages ofthe latest edition of "Jane's FightingShips" discloses.

The fate of none has been strangerthan that of the former HMCS Bow­manville (Castle class corvette), re­ported to be flying the red flag of Com­munist China.

She was one of the five ships of herclass, disarmed and sold to NationalistChina after the war. Converted to amerchant vessel by the Nationalists, theBowmanville fell into the hands of theCommunists when Chiang's forcesevacuated the mainland. "Jane's" re­ports that she has since been rearmedas a warship serving on the other side

. of the "bamboo curtain".Two sister ships, the Tillsonburg and

Orangeville, are still in Nationalisthands. but the fate of the other two, theHumberstone and CopperclijJe, is notindicated.

In recent months another Castle classcorvette, the former HMCS. Arnprior,joined the navy of Uruguay as a train­ing frigate. On the other side of SouthAmerica, the former Glace Bay (frigate)and the corvettes which once bore thenames StelLarton, Strathroy and Thor­lock have been incorporated into Chile'snavy.

Venezuela bought seven corvettesfrom Canada after the war, but onlyfour are reported still in service. Theseare ex-HMC Ships Algoma, Battleford,Oakville and Wetaskiwin. The Amherstwas lost en route, the Kamsack ranaground in 1949 and was discarded, andthe Dunvegan was stricken from the listin 1953.

BURMUDA RESCUEBRINGS PRAISE

The Commanding Officer, U,.S. NavalStation, Bermuda, has written a lettercommending the alertness of personnelof HMCS Prestonian in going to therescue of survivors of a U.S. Navy fly­ing boat which crashed October 19 inSt. George's Harbour, Bermuda.

The letter, received by the Flag Offi­cer Atlantic Coast, makes special men­tion of Lieut. Vernon A. Murison andLdg. Sea. Bruce S. McDonald.

Its starboard engine on fire, the planeovershot Kindley Field and crashed tailfirst into the water less than 50 yardsfrom the Prestonian. The letter follows:

"It is the desire of this command toexpress its sincere gratitude and appre­ciation for the outstanding help repderedby officers and men of HMCS Pres­tonian, following a U.S. Navy planecrash in St. George's Harbour. Theywere the first at the scene of the dis­aster, due to the alertness of the officerof the deck, Lieut. Vernon A. Murison,RCN, who noted the plane's difficultyand realized it would inevitably crash.Consequently, before the plane hit thewater, a liberty boat standing by wasgiven orders to, speed to the scene ofthe impending crash. As a result ofthis alert and timely action and throughthe particularly well-exercised judg­ment of Leading Seaman Bruce S. Mc­Donald, coxswain of the boat whicheffected the rescue, four survivors wereat once taken from the water.

"Such action on the part of all per­sonnelwho participated in this rescuereflected a high degree of proficiencyin their calling. Each one involved isto be highly commended for his ableand efficient services and they haveearned the gratitude of this commandand that of the families and friends ofthose involved in the tragedy."
