“Kaleo” - Called To Love

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, hat he

lay down his life for his friends” John 15:12-13.

It wasn’t simply a recommendation or even a strong suggestion – it was the command of Jesus: I command you to love one another. The fact that this is put in the imperative mode means it is not an option in our life. It is not something we do if we feel like it. It is to be a deliberate response to another person whom we know to be in the family of God, regardless of how we feel toward that person.

Many people struggle at this point. They say, How can you command love? Love is a feeling, and if you don't love somebody, you can't help it. Love is our master; we do not master it. Those who say these things reveal that they have a very serious misconception of love. Unfortunately, I think we are victims more of of Hollywood than thoughtful truth in this respect. We think of love as a feeling we have of affection toward another.

But love, as Jesus speaks of it here, is far different. We can be sure of one thing: He would never command us to do what is impossible for us to do. The secret, of course, is that we are to love, He says, as I have loved you. This kind of love is to arise out of the same kind of relationship that He has with the Father that made it possible for Him to love us. He loved us because God is love. He was in the Father, and the Father in Him. As He yielded to that relationship, love flowed out. It could not help it--God is love. Since God is love, as we yield to that relationship in the Son, love flows from us. And it will have the qualities that His love has.

We recognize the divinity of this love in the way it calls us to lay down our lives for another. We all know how fully Jesus Himself exemplified this. His is the greatest love that anyone can demonstrate toward friends. Obviously this means more than simply dying physically for them. He means by this that we are to give ourselves up for one another. When you go out of your way to meet a friend's need, when you are willing to spend time with someone - not necessarily because you are drawn to that person--and you are willing to go out of your way and to give yourself up for him or her, you are laying down your life, a part of it at least, for that person. This is what Jesus had in mind.

Our prayer ad life should become – “Lord, You have loved me with this kind of love. Now I pray that this same love would flow through me to others both within and outside of the body of Christ.”

Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord. Psalm 107:43 Throughout this Psalm the Psalmist recalls the merciful work of God to deliver people from trouble and distress. We serve a powerful God who frequently uses his power on behalf of his people. Through his acts of deliverance he demonstrates his love. Time and again, we can come to a new experience of His mighty presence when we simply surrender to His loving invitation and gentle embrace. Think about this awesome reality - We are loved by the One who controls all the power of the universe! He who flung the galaxies from His fingertips is the same One who reached and stretched out His nail printed hands to bring humanity back to His caring embrace. But God has not shown us his love so that we can relax and enjoy the feeling of being loved. Nor has God delivered us from trouble so that we can go on about our lives in safety and comfort. All that God does is for this end: to lead us to consider the steadfast love of the Lord. Out of his love, God has created us for himself. We were made to live in constant communion with God. Some people treat this as a curse, insisting that they be allowed to live for money or power or drugs or sex or television or a million other minuscule pleasures. Those things are not even mites of dust compared to the glory of God. We were created to dwell in God’s glory, to worship him in his holiness, to celebrate his love. Anything else is folly. What is your response to God’s goodness? Do you take his blessings as a call for worship? Do you praise him for his love? Do you celebrate even in times of trouble and distress, knowing he will deliver you? Or do you sit back, turn on the television, and forget the God who has blessed you with his steadfast love? Christian, consider the steadfast love of the Lord. Meditate for a moment about its impact on your life. Think about how often and in what ways you express that love to Him. And could it be deeper and more frequently – beginning today?

Obituary For Someone Else

Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else.

Someone's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person's share of the work.

Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else do it." Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; "Someone Else can work with that group." It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most liberal givers in our church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference.

Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do.

Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? When you are asked to help this year, remember – we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.

Books Of The Bible

The names of sixteen books of the English Bible are hidden in the text of the following paragraph. Can you find all sixteen of them?

“I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu. Kept people looking so hard for facts and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized. But the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a

real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you.

Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. One little lady says she brews a cup of tea, so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now for there are really sixteen names of books of the Bible in this story.”

The Desert

The apostle Paul clearly understood the call Jesus placed on his life at his conversion. He did not have to consult other men about this calling. But before he was released to begin his own mission, he went to Arabia for three years. Why did Paul have to go to Arabia for three years before he ever met another disciple of Jesus Christ? The Scripture does not tell us. In Galatians 1:17, Paul simply says, "Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus."

However, based upon many examples of God placing special callings on people's lives, we know it often requires a time of separation between the old life and the new life. No doubt, Paul had plenty of time to consider what had taken place in his life and time to develop an intimate knowledge and relationship with the newfound Savior. His life was about to change dramatically. So often, when God places a call on one of His children, it requires a separation between the old life and the new life. There is a time of being away from the old in order to prepare the heart for what is coming. It can be a painful and difficult separation. Joseph was separated from his family. Jacob was sent to live with his uncle Laban. Moses was sent to the desert.

What about you? Perhaps God has placed you in your own desert period! Perhaps you cannot make sense of the situation in which you find yourself. If you press into God during this time, He will reveal the purposes He has for you. The key is pressing into Him. Seek Him with a whole heart and He will be found. God may have a special calling and message He is building in your life right now. Trust in His love for you that He will fully complete the work He has started in you.

The Last Impression

Two gentlemen boarded a coast-to-coast flight and were seated beside each other on the commercial plane.

After breezing through the on-flight magazine, the first man turned to the other and asked, "What do you do?" The gentleman replied, "I am a pastor of a church."

"Oh," said the first man quickly. "I don't believe in this religious stuff. It's for kids, you know, like the song ‘Jesus Loves Me This I know, for the Bible tells me so...."

The minister politely laughed and asked the other man what he did for a liv-ing. "I am an astronomer," said the first man.

"Oh, that stuff," said the minister. "I thought it was just for kids, you know – ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star....'"

Protected from the Big and Small In May 1995, a 34 year old construction worker by the name of Randy Reid was doing some final welding on top of a nearly completed water tower in one of Chicago's suburbs. At one point, Randy unhooked his safety belt so he could reach for some pipes. But at that same moment, a metal beam slipped off a nearby crane, and bumped the scaffolding Randy was standing on. The scaffolding tipped, and Randy lost his balance. He fell 110 feet to the ground below. In landing, he just missed a pile of rocks and construction debris on the ground. Instead he landed face down on a pile of dirt.

A fellow worker saw the whole accident and immediately called 911. When paramedics arrived, they couldn't believe their eyes. They found Randy completely conscious, moving, and complaining that he had a sore back. Even though he went through such a horrendous fall, Randy still maintained his sense of humor. As paramedics carried him on a backboard to the ambulance, Randy asked one thing. He said, "Hey guys, be careful, will you? Don't drop me." When he arrived at the hospital and was examined by the doctors, and they discovered that the only injury he suffered was a bruised lung. Friends, I think sometimes our faith resembles Randy. God protects us from harm in a 110-foot fall, but we're still nervous about three-foot heights. By that I mean, we have faith that God will save us from hell and death, but we're afraid that He won't be able to protect us from the smaller difficul-ties we are going to face this coming week "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and ALL these things shall be added to you." – Matthew 6:33

Developing Patience How do you develop patience? Through trouble! When your hon-esty seems to go unnoticed, when your hard work seems to go unrewarded, when your kindness is rendered without thanks, when your helping hand is offered and ignored, when even love is refused, that's when patience shines in all its beauty. Paul writes in Romans 5:3, "Trouble produces patience." You've seen this principle at work in the development of children. One child, overly shielded and protected, may grow up into a weak-ling without ambition and courage, destined to failure. Another, left to fight their own battles, to struggle, to learn through trial and error, may grow into near-perfect maturity. The same principle applies to the Christian life when you realize that each storm brings its blessings and each trial produces its rewards. Let's look at three practical benefits of patience. First, patience brings hope. "Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God's promises to be fulfilled." (Romans 15:4) Secondly, patience produces spiritual fruit. "And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God's word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest." (Luke 8:15) Thirdly, through patience you receive what God has promised. "Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and endurance." (Hebrews 6:12)
