Research

Survey Input: a survey was shared prior to further planning of the MAS Project. One question on the survey addressed, “do you use local artists in your curriculum?”. Here is the overall consensus as to why they do not .

Lack of funding to recruit artists in the classroom.

Grants are too competitive. Same pool of money for all.

New to teaching.

Lack of time.

Too many things on the teacher’s plate.

Do not know any artists in my community or region.



Purpose of MAS

Focus on 6-12 art education and curriculum integration.

Embrace contemporary art locally and regionally whilst bringing it into the classroom.

Design unit plans concentrating on such as but not limited to: varied art processes, narratives, collaboration, and technology and infuse interaction with the MAS artists into the classroom.

Implement artist-inspired unit plans to be part of a teacher workbook to accompany the Midwest Artist Studio ™ Catalog, which will consist of such as but not limited to: photographs, interviews, artist statements, artist website(s). Unit plans will focus on such as but not limited to: the use of the Elements and Principles of Design, National Visual Arts Standards, literacy, differentiated instruction and assessments.

About

The Midwest Artist Studios ™ (MAS) is a three-summer project spearheaded by Sheboygan North High School art educator, Frank Juarez. The goal of the project is to develop an original art education curriculum incorporating the work, life and personal insights of participating, professional Midwest artists. This curriculum will be used to educate and inspire creativity in grade 6 – 12 students in the public, private and home school systems. The catalog (described below) could also be used effectively in a college setting. A team consisting of an art educator, photographer, writer, and assistant will travel to 12 different States in the Midwest during the three consecutive summers beginning in 2014. They will visit contemporary visual artists who embrace the importance of Art Education, believe that their art experience was influenced or shaped by their K-12 Art Education and are following their dream of making art as a significant part of their lives and careers. These visits will be filmed and will incorporate a close and personal approach into the studio life of an artist. Artists will talk about their engagement in their creative processes, share their studio workspaces, and discuss their work schedule, daily commitments, work ethic and artistic vision. After each summer tour, the MAS Team will design a catalog consisting of photographs and excerpts from their interviews as well as a MAS Workbook. The MAS Workbook will contain lesson plans that complement and reinforce the artists’ studio practices while exposing, educating and engaging students to different types of art being created throughout the Midwest. The Workbook will also provide a platform for students to tie together classroom instruction while maintaining an active sketchbook and taking creative risks. Access to filmed videos will be given to educators purchasing the Workbook. As an added component to the curriculum, educators will be provided with access to the artists via Skype and Google+. This unique opportunity will allow interactive lesson planning.



The Research

A preliminary survey was conducted (February 2014) prior to the beginning stages of development for the Midwest Artist Studios ™ to see if this idea of a project would be a need for educators teaching in public and private schools. Over 50% of the surveys were submitted in favorable of this project. Throughout the development of this project we talked to educators face-to- face, via email and online to see what specific needs they may have regarding the Midwest Artist Studios ™ on an ongoing basis.

The most pertinent data will take place after the production of the Midwest Artist Studios ™ catalog and the MAS Workbook. These two items will be available for purchase with all proceeds benefitting part 2 and 3 of this project, which is visiting another set of artists in the Midwest the following summer. Input will be gathered from educators, administrators, students, artists, and parents via letters, email, social media, mobile, survey, and Midwest Artist Studios ™ blog, midwestartiststudios.com. All gathered information would be used to evaluate this project and to make modifications for the Summer 2015 and Summer 2016.

Catalog

The Midwest Artist Studios ™ Catalog is a 96 page, full color catalog with photographs of the artists, their work and their studio as well as excerpts from their interviews. It also include the artists’ artist statement, biography, and website. Full articles are published in our workbook as part of our literacy component of this project.

Workbook

The Midwest Artist Studios ™ Workbook is a XX pages, black & white workbook with photographs of the artists, process, and studio. Also, includes full articles of our interviews, artist-infused lesson plan designed after the artists’ work, recommended standards, differentiated strategies, technology implementations, and assessments. Inside the workbook we provide the password to our MAS site, which contains our artist videos, behind the scenes footage, and much more...



Innovative + Cutting Edge

The Midwest Artist Studios ™ Project is different than anything else out there. There are plenty of sites online where you can find contemporary artists, however, one thing that these sites do not provide is an intimate and accessible studio experience where contemporary art is linked to art education. These featured artists have had positive art class experiences that drove them to pursue a life of making art.

Through our collective expertise, the MAS team aims to create a well-rounded experience where educators of all disciplines can share our journey through integrating these artist-infused unit plans into their curriculum. In return, having access to our artists via Skyple or Google+, an online gallery of photographs, a concise narrative relating to the work of the artists, and a private viewing room from behind the scenes documentation and interviews.
