New Principal For St Colman’s Midleton; Dare we mention school inearly August? – Well just briefly, because St Colman’s CommunityCollege will have a new principal in place when classes recommence laterthis month. Gerry Kelly moves from his role as principal at ColaisteMhuire Buttevant to take over the helm from fellow west of Ireland nativeTom Hughes who announced his retirement earlier this year.Gerry is well known in political and sporting circles and no doubt is look-ing forward to taking up the reins of responsibility from Tom who hasbeen in the position for the past 14 years. Incidentally St Colman’sCommunity College have announced details of a number of Full TimeOne Year Courses which commence next month. Applications forms andfurther information are available from the school office. Midleton Based Summer School Comes Of Age; Still inside the doorsof St Colman’s Community College, summer is till a busy season as theEast Cork Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped host theirannual Summer School. Twenty one years ago when the first such venturecame into being nobody could have imagined the success story that wasabout to be scripted. Inspired by the presence of Margaret Trundle whohas been involved from day 1 the school has grown to now cater for over4 times it’s original figure with over 100 second level students now assist-ing in it’s running. In fact such was the response this year by the youth of the region to a callfor help that almost 50 helpers are now on a standby/waiting list to offertheir assistance. From humble beginnings in the nineties, not only have numbers swelledbut also it’s vast array of activities have expanded. The school runs twiceweekly for the months of July and August and features several out dooradventures to near and far in a most varied programme, which would notbe possible without the generous financial backing locally.Only this summer the entire project was given a huge shot in the armwhen Midleton based Cascade Designs made a 11,000 euro donationtowards the organisation that has set a standard of excellence that reflectsthe outstanding contribution of it’s hard working committee and dedicat-ed band of volunteers.Wedding Anniversary Congrats; Popular Midleton couple Jo and SeanO’Farrell certainly have the secret of a happy marriage, after recently cel-ebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple celebrated in thecompany of their family and no doubt had many a happy journey to recallas they drifted down memory lane. Both Jo and Sean are renowned for their interest of sport and in particu-lar sport. They still travel regularly to watch many of their grand childrenin action both locally an further afield. As a proud Kerryman Sean had a wry smile of satisfaction followingrecent events in Killarney and now doubt he is quietly planning anotherday of celebration should his beloved ‘kingdom’ regain Sam later thissummer. To Jo and Sean we say ‘heartiest congratulations from your many friendsand acquaintances throughout the East Cork region.Fr Eamonn Kelleher Appointed In Saleen; A number of changes havebeen announced in the Diocese of Cloyne over the past few weeks.Amongst these is the return of Fr Eamonn Kelleher from a sabbatical totake up a position in the parish of Aghada. Fr Kelleher previously servedin Midleton parish. Meantime the current Aghada curate Fr BrendanMallon moves to Coachford.Incidentally Fr Eamonn will now join his name sake Fr Denis Kelleherwho is the current parish priest in the Aghada parish which incorporatesboth Saleen and Ballinrostig Churches.A Fishy Story In Ballycrenane; Great Island Fishing Club have reachedthe mid way point their season with the next round of the Master AnglerOf The Year competition due to be held at Ballycrenane beach onSaturday August 27th. In total 12 rounds of the competition are fishedthroughout the season with the 10 best scores of each angler countingtowards the overall chase for the title of ‘Master Angler’, the winner ofwhich carries off the coveted Mary Buckley Memorial Trophy. – andthat’s not all, because the club champion will then go forward to competein the All Ireland Master Angler competition. An entry of approximately 20 is expected for the aforementioned localcompetition which commences at 8.30pm and continues until just afterthe mid night gong has sounded.Cloyne Community Fund Raiser; This Wednesday evening is likely tosee a big influence of visitors to the Cloyne area. The occasion is the sec-ond running of the 5K Road Race/Walk. Proceeds from the event will gotowards Cloyne Community Council and specifically to the Children’sPlayground Fund.Since it’s inception in 2009 Cloyne CommunityCouncil has successfully undertaken a number of local projects including

the initiation of a Harvest Festival in September. The Council is made upof 24 elected members which cover 12 local areas and members willretain their positions until a further election takes place next year. DermotBarry (Chairman) Michael Greaney (Vice Chairman) Ken Heffernan(Secretary) Ann-Marie Perry (Assistant Secretary) Niamh Power(Treasurer) Mary Keane (Assistant Treasurer) and Amanda Wallace(P.R.O) were subsequently elected as officers. Back to this evening theorganisation team headed by Margaret Twohig advise participants toarrive early with the walk beginning at 7pm and the race due to start sixtyminutes later. Entries for both events will be taken from 6pm onwards atthe National School. The cost of participation is 5 euro for walkers and8 euro for runners. Call 087-2094493 for further information.Castlemartyr Food Festival; Sean and Dorothy Walsh and family willbe in the spotlight this weekend in Castlemartyr as the renowned businessfamily host their inaugural Food Festival. Their splendid premises adja-cent to the bridge has become very much of a landmark in Castlemartyrand their thriving business continues to attract people from far and near.On Friday and Saturday something really special awaits for visitors as thecar park area will be jam packed with stall holders representing all that isgood and healthy in Irish food. There will be delights and treats galore tofurther tempt the pallet of those who are spoilt for choice on a daily basiswhen visiting The Village Greengrocer and Food Hall.A very warm welcome awaits all shoppers on this Friday and Saturdaywith stalls open from mid morning until late afternoon. No need to worryabout parking as an extra car park has been arranged adjacent to the fes-tival fun. Don’t miss a great occasion!Castlemartyr Wood; As mentioned two weeks ago in this column it’sgreat to see the recent developments at Castlemartyr Wood where Coillte,Castlemartyr Community Council and SECAD have joined forces to pro-vide visitors and locals with some delightful walking trails. It has nowemerged that the three groups will convene at Castlemartyr Resort to offi-cially launch their new routes. When one considers the three aforemen-tioned groups also recently another significant project, the replacement ofthe foot bridge on the walk way from the Ladysbridge Road entrance, there is every reason for all concerned to be proud of their achievements.Keep up the good work!Dungourney/Castlemartyr Rematch Possible; Mention ofCastlemartyr, let’s talk hurling briefly. St Ita’s have the job of preventinga third championship meeting within a twelve month period betweenCastlemartyr and Dungourney. Sunday next sees the Gortroe club crosscamans with the defending junior ‘A’ grade champions in Youghal at thequarter stage of the East Cork Oil sponsored competition.Dungourney who lost narrowly in last year’s final to their fellow parish-ioners, produced a dazzling first round performance when the sides metagain early in this championship summer. It immediately elevated themto the position of likely favourites for out right success. Since then theyhave overcome a tough obstacle in Midleton whilst Castlemartyr haverediscovered the winning formula against both Killeagh andCarrigtwohill. So all eyes on Sunday to see if Castlemartyr can overcome St Ita’s and setup another championship hour against Dungourney.Ballynoe’s Denis Has A Unrivalled CollectionNow a hurling story off the field, about a man whose love for the gamehas seen him compile an unrivalled collection of memorabilia spanningmany decades. Denis O’Sullivan from Ballynoe is a well know figurearound East Cork and is currently preparing for a special exhibition atBishopstown Library on Saturday week August 20th.Photographs of victorious hurling and camogie teams from all gradesfrom all corners of the country have always been to the fore as Denis reg-ularly aims to update his remarkable collection. Such a task can be varyfrom being straight forward to almost impossible, but Denis has tackledthe next challenge with the same burning desire as his hurling iconChristy Ring did on the field of play. The Cloyne maestro has a special place in the heart of this Ballynoe manand he has the proof of it in his collection including some never publishedimages of ‘Ringy’..As the years passed Denis expanded his collection toinclude both dvd’s and audio cassettes. Suffice to say that if you have aspecial moment in your hurling memory bank, the chances are that Deniscan match it with either video or audio footage. Bishopstown Library on Saturday week could prove to be quite a senti-mental location for hurling followers – a large screen along with audioequipment is to be set up in order to provide visitors with instant GAAaction. The occasion takes place as part of National Heritage Week.

Hints for a healthy lunch MOST children enjoyand look forward to theirschool lunches and theyprovide a good opportu-nity to get your childinvolved in making goodnutritional food choices.

However, beforesnack-breaks andlunchtime at school, breakfast is an importantstart to your child's day.Sitting down with yourchild to have a goodbreakfast of toast orbreakfast cereal in the morning will only add an extra 5to 10 minutes to your morning schedule and will makeall the difference to your child's health - not to mentionhis/her concentration levels in the classroom.

If your child has a late lunch, be sure to enquire atthe school about sending a mid-morning snack to keephim/her going until lunch. Young children should haveaccess to food after three hours. While playtime isimportant try and encourage your child to eat then play!

Lunch at school is both nutritionally and sociallyimportant. Often children are so preoccupied with whatis going on around them that they may not eat verymuch. For this reason, lunches should be easy, "childfriendly" and not overwhelming in quantity or variety. For example, children often want all of the sandwichparts, but packed separately. Sliced meats and cheesecan be sent in a sealed bag. Bread in all shapes andvarieties can be used; small pitta breads, crackers andpetite pans are good alternatives to sliced bread.

To encourage fruit and vegetable consumption, besure to peel and slice when you can. A whole piece offruit or vegetable may be too much to tackle, but fruitwedges, baby carrots or cucumber spears that can beeaten with fingers will work just fine.

By John CashmanSince it's formation back in the early 1970's East Cork Hot Rod Club hasplayed an integral part in the sporting and social lives of many familiesthrough out the region. The organisation success story has been down thesolid foundation built by it's original members also to the work and dedi-cation of the people that followed in their footsteps. Now over 4 decades on East Cork Hot Rod Club is very much to the foreorganising a range of race days throughout the year and boasting some ofthe sport's most decorated stars. In recent years, the club had the honourof hosting the All Ireland Championship at Stumphill in Midleton, a com-petition which only last Sunday was held across the county bounds inKerry and saw club members Kevin McGann, Gary Kelly and CillianO'Brien compete at the highest level.Next Sunday East Cork Hot Rod Club will play host to latest round of the'Driver of the Year' competition which has been up and running since midspring, at the club's home base. The generosity of land owner JohnO'Grady is responsible for the East Cork Club being able to play host tothe qualifying rounds at Broomfield in Midleton. Admission on Sundaynext is 7 euro per adult, with children up to 14 years free of charge. It rep-resents great value for an afternoon of non stop entertainment which canbe enjoyed by people of all ages. The first of 18 races is scheduled tobegin at 12.30pm.- Before we look forward to the meeting, firstly a brief look back to the

early days of the club.People such as Ralph Cunningham (President), Paddy Healy RIP(Chariman) Donie Buckley (Secretary) Pat O'Shea RIP, Joe Moran RIP,Jimmy Brien, Syd Godfrey RIP, Alec O Driscoll, Murty Ryan, ChristyMcEvoy and Mick Cotter were household names in those early days. Many indelible family links were formed that have now spread to a thirdgeneration. Today young Aaron McEvoy is one of the bright new namesof the sport, his father Danny was to the fore for many years whilstArron's grand father the aforementioned Christy is one the sports' mostfamous names.Ladies were also to the forefront of the sport and like their male counterparts they made a major contribution on and off the track. All Irelandhonours were won by ladies and men whilst behind the scenes the workof people such as Ann O'Brien, Ann O'Driscoll, Mary Buckley (RIP)Kathleen Cunningham and many more was a key factor in the develop-ment of the club.Interestingly husband and wife team Tony O'Driscoll and Ann MarieO'Driscol who had taken a break from the sport are back in competitiveaction, demonstrating the appeal of the hot rod racing to the entire fami-ly. Husband and wife, father and daughter, sister and brothers are all partof the hot rod family. The legendary Donie Buckley, multiple All Ireland Champion is one thesport's great ambassadors and workers, one of the men that has driven theclub on in good times and bad times. Whilst not wishing to overly hypethe contribution of any one individual it's fair to say that here in EastCork we have one the sport's greatest ever campaigners here on our doorstep. So back to Sunday and what lies ahead at Broomfield: the aforementionedDonie has penned this assessment of the day's events.

East Cork Drivers Gary Kelly, Killian O’Brien & Kevin McGann who took part inlast Sunday’s All Ireland Championships in Kerry.

Hot rod racing will con-tinue this Sunday Augustthe 14th at Broomfield,Midleton on the lands ofJohn O'Grady at 12.30.This event will be the 5thround in the East CorkDriver of The YearChampionship which isreally very close with allthe drivers in with a greatshout of victory over thefew days of racing. As is now normal, 18races will make up thedays racing starting asusual with the junior driv-ers. 15 year old Brendan O'Sullivan from the Kingdom Club in Kerry isone of the leading contenders in the Class One juniors all powered by 1litre engines and he will again make the trip to Midleton on Sunday wherehe hopes to put in a good performance to hold his position in this class. He will however have to be at his best to keep in front of young JamesO'Brien in a very fast Micra and Anthony O'Driscoll from Glanmire alsoin a Micra who now seems to have come to grips with the handling of hiscar in this class.Local drivers also include Killian O'Brien in his Starlet and J.J. Williamswho is in the best of form of late and could cause another upset as he facesthe starter. But Arron McEvoy in his Fiat Chink, a winner last day out isin fighting good form as we pass the halfway stage in the championshipand again will be close at the end. Newcomers Maurice Savage and hisbrother have their Starlet in fine racing shape and will be joined by youngJohn Twomey in a Micra 1 Litre for this race. Young Chloe McGann inher Toyota Starlet is a gem to watch and will have a big say in this classas she has a lot of racing done in the past year.Class One Seniors: Henry Merx is another in top form and he will keepNathan Long and Maurice O'Keeffe both with a lot of racing behind themat bay to improve his driver of the year's points. Kevin O'Sullivan in aToyota Starlet will not be waiting for it all to happen as he has shown overthe last few days out. But the man that they all have to keep an eye out foris Nickey O'Leary from Fermoy in a well tuned Nissan Micra. A fewgood results has shot him well up the leader board in the race for title inClass One. Maurice O'Keeffe has missed the last days racing and will beout to regain points.Class 3: Garry "King" Kelly in a 1300 Starlet is in top form in Broomfieldevery day out and has had some very good wins at the venue but PaO'Mahoney is the one to catch on this very fast track. The winner of therace last week he has his car in great shape for the next round. JasonO'Connor from Carrigtwohill in his Toyota was never slow and will givePa and George Buckley a run for it to the line.Tom O'Regan in a Toyota Starlet will be out this Sunday to move on inthe championship title race and Tom with a lot of racing behind him willagain show the newcomers how it's done. John Dolphin from Cloyne puton a good show 3 weeks ago and can only get better. He has shown thathe can mix it with the best on any given day. Tipperary hot shot JoeMcCormack in another Starlet is worth keeping an eye out for as he isnever far away at the end.Class 4, 5 and 6: Allen Long has now got his Chink going and ready forMidleton, fitted with a 3.5 Rover engine, but is it fast enough to catchMark Dolphin in the Mini, only time will tell. But Kevin McGann in aStarlet will make it hard for anyone on grass and the best of racing shouldbe seen in this class on Sunday. The ladies will again have their 3 races and the last day it was very closeat the end. Sinead O'Brien has now come to grips with the corners inBroomfield and will be hard to catch if she gets away off the line. CarolDelaney is another lady who will be there at the end, as will Claire Parkerwho has a new engine fitted for Sunday. Ann Marie O'Driscoll from thelocal club won't be doing her make up in this race and will put it up to therest in this class. Racing gets underway at 12.30.

Championship 2011 - Lios gCul 0.17 Carrig na bhFearr 1.14Castlelyons on Saturday night was the venue for this eagerly awaited JuniorHurling Quarter Final between Lisgoold and Carrig na bhFearr , with a latevenue change seeing the tie switched from Rathcormac late in the week. The weather gods had obviously decided that to make the game interestinga swirling downfield breeze would create a decided advantage in either half, and a challenge to play into . After an entertaining hours hurling , it wasright that both sides would live to fight again , as nothing could separate thesides and a replay will be needed to decide the semi finalists . Lisgoold lined out with a number of alterations from the Midleton tie , withMaurice O'Connell now located in the inside forward line in place of ham-string victim Jonathon O'Shea. Rob Smart showed enough in training andleague encounters to warrant a starting position in the left corner, havingmissed the earlier Championship games due to exam restrictions .Elsewhere , the newly paired midfield partnership consisted of BarryAherne and John Cronin .Defensively , an almost Lazarus like recovery by Noel Connery saw theembattled youngster regain his wing back slot . Indeed whilst positions 1- 4 showed a consistency this year ( Ciaran - Kevin - Cathal - Pa ) , man-ager Mike Woods certainly went for a rearranged format in the other lines. Early doors the switches , both forced and unforced , seemed to work verywell , as , although we faced the elements , we created numeerous chances. The brilliant John Cashman notched our first two scores , and was fouledfor three more in the opening period . In fact the excellent young Cashmanwas involved directly in everything positive we created . Barry Ahernscorched through for a blistering point and we led by 0.06 to 0.04 as halftime beckoned . Ciaran Cronin had repelled a stinging point blank save dur-ing an otherwise quiet half but was powerless as the games only green flagscore nestled behind him as half time loomed . A pair of points concededleft us trailing by 1.08 to 0.06 at the short whistle but , with the advantageof the strengthening wind , and Ciaran's almost pitch length supersonicpuckouts to come , some quiet confidence was evident amongst the Blueclad supporters on the bank. The introduction of Owen O'Sullivan , who would have a key pivotalcameo role towards the conclusion , and especially Jonathon O'Shea ,whose swashbuckling style caused endless problems for his direct oppo-nent , added to our forward options for the second half . The second half was a tremendous affair with both sides showing a hugewill to win , and neither side deserving to lose . The strong breeze was nowto our advantage , which was overcome by our opponent's decision to playan extra defender , whilst Pa O'Mahony was effectively used in a sweeperrole . Point after point was knocked off the defecit , mainly through theplaced ball accuracy of Maurice O'Connell , as the lead was dwindled slow-ly as the half progressed . It was nail biting stuff towards the conclusion ,as first Owen O'Sullivan drilled an equaliser from the half way line with thesweet left handed strike , and then Maurice soared another free from the '45, after a brilliant run by big brother Jer resulted in the placed ball opportu-nity , to give us the lead with the clock ticking to conclusion . A last puckconcession of an equaliser saw referee Michael Mulry then call time on thiscracker which everyone present will concede was a fair result , and affordeach side the chance to progress when this eagerly awaited replay will beplayed . Local Matters: All at CLCG Lios gCul were saddened to hear of the sadand untimely passing of Mike Cashman , a very regular and popular figureon the sidelines of our games , and a constant support to his grandsons ,especially , at under age matches . Condolences to Gerry and Geraldine ,as well as to the extended Cashman families on this sad bereavement. Arlamd dheis De go raibh a h'ainm . Highest praise , meanwhile , to the Playground Committee on the openingof the wonderful new children's playground facilities at Lisgoold, which isalready proving a brilliant addition to the community and a most colorfuland beneficial attraction . Congratulations to all concerned. Further congratulations to our neighbour , and supporter Paul Townend ,Champion Jump Jockey of 2010 / 11 who continued his fine form by pow-ering home Blazing Tempo to victory in the prestigeous Galway Plate atBallybrit on Wednesday . Returned at an attractive 5/1 , Paul helped line thepockets of a number of shrewd investors , and all in CLCG congragulatePaul on his latest fantastic win , and wish all the very best for the seasonahead . And finally , continued best wishes to local Mary Burke , of CrystalSwing , who is proving as adept in the kitchen as she is in the ballroom , asher culinary abilities are showcased in TV's "Head Chef" program . Marycontinues to put Lisgoold on the map , and we all wish her the very best asthe program series continues . Communication; The late change in venue for our Championshipencounter showed how important an effective communication system is toa modern Club . A thoroughly communication program kicked into place to

ensure that everyone who wanted to see the game was aware of the change. Almost 300 users and followers of the Club on Facebook were altered .Almost 100 patrons were advised on the free Clubtext service , and a fur-ther 50 were notified through the Club email circulation list . If you're notyet registered for these free services , contact Club PRO Brendan Healy.

JAHC Castlemartyr 1-22 Carrigtwohill 2-4; Castlemartyr booked theirplace in the quarter final of the East Cork with a win over Carrigtwohillin Midleton on Monday evening. The score line would suggest this wasall one way traffic but it was only in the last 20 minutes that Castlemartyrwere able to relax after the Carrigtwohill challenge faded and we wereable to build up a big score. With only 2 points separating the sides at halftime it was still all to play for after Castlemartyr were guilty of wasting ahuge amount of procession in the first half. Castlemartyr had the first four points of the game through SeanHennessey, Evan O'Keeffe, Jimmy Smiddy and Barry Lawton beforeCarrig responded with a pointed free. Both teams swapped points beforeCarrig were awarded a free on the Castlemaryr 21 yard line. SeanO'Farrell blasted to the back of the Castlemartyr net to bring Carrig rightback into the game even though Castlemartyr were enjoying all the pro-cession. Two points from Jimmy Smiddy and Evan O'Keeffe settledCastlemartyr once again but another Carrigtwohill free just before halftime left the score at 0-7 to 1-2 at the break. Castlemartyr started the second half well with 3 unanswered points fromEvan O'Keeffe and Barry Lawton (2). With a 5 point lead at this stageCastlemartyr again left Carrig back into the game when Sean O'Farrellgoaled after being left run through the heart of our defence. Hovever,Castlemartyr quickly regrouped and went on to completely dominate theremainder of the match, finding the target at will. A fortuitous goal froma long range Jimmy Smiddy free gave Castlemartyr a comfortable leadand from that point Carrig's heads dropped and the game was over as acontest. Further points from Evan O'Keeffe, Barry Lawton, AdrianBowens, Brien O'Tuama, Mark Bowens and Sean Hennessey put a glosson the score for Castlemartyr . Overall it was a good performance with a number of good individual dis-plays. Rob O'Donovan had his best game of the year at full back, whileup front both Evan O'Keeffe and Barry Lawton both scored 6 points fromplay. Scorers for Castlemartyr: J Smiddy 1-3, E O'Keefe and Barry Lawton 0-6 each, S Hennessy 0-2, B Smiddy, A Bowens, Brian Lawton, BrianO'Tuama and Mark Bowens 0-1 each. It was a game we could have one havingmuch of the pocession, but it was Kileagh ability to find the target thatearned them the points on the night. Killeahj led by 4 points at the breakon a score of 1-8 to 1-4. Our scores in the first half game from 2 pointseach from Dessie Murphy and Steve Collins as well as a great goal fromGer Swayne as he doubled on a long range free to rattle the back of theKilleagh net.Castlemartyr played excellently in the second half as we enjoyed periodsof dominance but unfortunately were unable to convert this into scores.Second half points from Brendan Barrett and Dessie Murphy kept us inthe game but unfortunately we couldn't get enough scores to take thepoints. Best for Castlemartyr on the night were Brian Barrett in goals whosave a penalty and pulled off some great saves, and Chris Moran who hada fine game from corner back. A place in the semi final against Dungourneyawaits the winners so Castlemartyr will not need much more motivationthan that to overcome the men from Gortroe. It won't be easy however, with St Ita's unlucky not to beat Castlemartyr in the first round last year.So let all get to Youghal next Sunday to try and help the Reds over theline in this one.ANNUAL CLUB FUNDRAISING DRAW 20112 MONTHLY DRAWS @ €20 PER MONTHOver €5,000 IN PRIZE MONEY1st Draw - August 2011 - 2nd Draw - September 20111st €1,000, 2nd €500, 3rd €400, 4th €300, 5th-10th €100 eachWe would like to inform you about our annual fundraising draw for 2011which is taking place over two months with draws to be held in Augustand September. Championship Preview Lios gCul v Carrig na bhFearr, in Castlelyons, Saturday at 6.30The first outing could not decide the victor in this East CorkChampionship Quarter Final, so the sides must do battle again to find outwho will face Sarsfields in the penultimate round. It is difficult to under-stand where momentum will lie after the drawn game , and , having beenin a winning position deep into injury time, our boys will surely look tofinishing the job this time round. Most of the pre-match talk in the hostel-ries of Lisgoold is whether manager Mike Woods will make any personnelchanges to our starting line up. When introduced in the drawn game,Jonathon O'Shea caused significant problems for his opponent, so, manywill look with interest to the composition of the full forward line. The stability of the inside line of Patrick, Cathal and Kevin has providedfantastic protection to Ciaran between the sticks. The Lazarus like recov-ery of Noel will see him cement his wing back berth again, which will freethe swashbuckling style of Barry Ahern to a lar na pairce berth. JohnCronin will pick up from where he left off, with a brilliant finish to thedrawn game. If our forwards can support the excellent John Cashman onthe scoring responsibilities, there's no reason we can't emerge fromCastlelyons as the winner on Saturday night. Under 16 Championship: On Wednesday the 3rd of August Lisgoold U16boys played Kinsale at home in the first round of the championship. It wasa bad night for hurling but we soon settled in to the game. We had somegreat performances all over the field to many to name them all. The firsthalf was tough and we led by a few points at half time. Lisgoold again gotstuck in and we got some great scores in the second half. On the nightKinsale fought well back but Lisgoold were worthy winners in the finish.Next Wednesday August 10th we play Russell Rovers, it will be hard onebut we again will give it a hundred percent. Team; Brian O'Connell,Brendan Flynn (0.04), Bill Whelan, Mark Keniry, Michael Barry, RobertConway, Michael Connery (0.01), Martin Conroy, Shane McSweeney(1.00), Kevin O'Keeffe (1.00), John Joe Williams, Ciaran O'Shea, JackRyan, Kieran Cashman (2.04), Luke Morrissey (1.00), Fergal RocheUnder 13 League: A thrilling encounter at a wet Pairc Lios gCul saw ourboys just about eek out a victory over visitors Sarsfields. The brilliantCiaran Cashman was best supported by Sean Power, Robert Williams andShane Collins, while Liam Chandler continued his goal scoring record.Well done also to the younger players who played their first U13 game onSaturday as the boys start the build up to Championship encounter againstUnder 12 County Champions from last year Bride Rovers. This should bea thrilling encounter for anyone who would like to see two very evenlymatched sides do battle with local, and ultimate Championship braggingrights on offer to the victor. Under 12's v Watergrasshill: Another very worthwhile encounter wheretwo - goal hero Liam Chandler was on fire on a very wet and drizzly night.Defensively, Sean Whelan, Cian Healy and Jason Hegarty were to the fore,on a night where the fine hurling on show by both sides was a creditdespite the difficult handling conditions. This side has continued to playregular games, even when short of "regulars". This pattern continued onWednesday, where some "fringe" players will have used the opportunity toforce their names into the thinking for Paul Whelan's starting line up infuture games.Under 8 Game: Some of our youngest players made the most of the shortcross - town trip to Ballinacurra on Saturday morning, where both sidesprovided a brilliant hours entertainment , with score galore on show. Welldone to Jamie, Pierce, Noel, Diarmuid, Christian, Jake, Jay, Dylan, Billie,Tom, Izaak, Gerry, Jonathon, Darragh, Sean and Michael, each of whomenjoyed showing off their skills before a very appreciative attendance ofparents, friends and other family members. Building Program: The Committee responsible for raising funds for thenew dressing rooms and facilities at Pairc Lios gCul would like to thankall our supporters, members and neighbours who have committed to the"standing order" initiative. We have now received the support of in excessof 100 who have signed up to the scheme, and we are actively workingtowards the magic numbers required to seek funding for the project. Aseveryone knows, we also needs to raise a lump sum of available funds, sowatch for as very attractive "buster night" the details of which will belaunched soon.

U21 B Hurling ChampionshipRussell Rovers 4-11 Youghal 1-14Our U21 hurlers did the club proud last Tuesday night week in the well-prepared venue of Páirc Uí Chinnéide, Killeagh when they advanced to thesemi-finals of the East Cork U21B championship following an impressivewin over Youghal. Despite limited preparation, this relatively young sideplayed with a team spirit and cohesion that we have seldom seen from ourU21 teams in the past.Youghal raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after just 8 minutes and it looked likewe were facing an early exit from this competition but our lads respondedwell with six points from the excellent Daniel Moynihan (including twofrom frees won by Kevin Tattan late in the half) and another two points byShane Fleming to leave us trailing 0-10 to 0-8 at the short whistle. An early second-half goal by Kevin O'Brien gave us the lead briefly for thefirst time and further points by Moynihan and Tattan cancelled out threepointed frees by Youghal to leave the sides deadlocked approaching thethree-quarter stage. Then, in the 14th minute Shane Fleming, who had beena thorn to the Youghal defence all through, scored a great goal after round-ing his marker 40 metres out. Another goal followed seven minutes laterfrom an outfield delivery by Kevin Tattan which appeared to go all the wayto the net. Our fourth green flag was raised by Kevin Ivers in the 27thminute when he received a sublime pass from Daniel O'Brien after a greatsolo run through the Youghal defence. Eoin McGrath added a point ininjury time before Youghal got in for a late consolation goal on the strokeof full time.Andrew Hartnett was solid between the posts all through while our entiredefence played a huge part in this victory, particularly Tadhg Crowley atcentre-back, along with David Whelehan and James Ahern. We now meet the winners of Cloyne and Carraig na bhFear which is pen-cilled in for around the 24th August.Team: Andrew Hartnett; Aidan Beausang, David Whelehan, James Ahern;Ricky Walsh, Tadhg Crowley (Capt), Paul Lane; Daniel Moynihan, DanielO'Brien; Kevin O'Brien, Kevin Tattan, Eoin McGrath; Kevin Ivers, ShaneFleming, James Moynihan.Subs: Sean Maher, Kieran O'Brien, Philip O'Neill, James Walsh, AlanCott, John Burke.

County B Junior Hurling Championship Semi FinalBallinacurra 1-16 Lismire 1-10A second County Final in three years beckons for the hurlers from TheVillage after a fully deserved victory over Lismire in Cloughduv lastSunday. In truth Ballinacurra were always in control and their six pointvictory was certainly well merited.Lismire got out of the blocks first from a pointed free after two minuteshowever Ballinacurra were soon on level terms when Scott Richardspointed from 35 metres out. In the 5th minute Lismire went ahead againwith another point. After eight minutes Scott Richards ran on to a break-ing ball and rifled the ball to the corner of the net to put The Village aheadand as it turned out it was a lead they never lost for the remainder of thegame. A Brian Sigerson point in the 13th minute had Ballinacurra threepoints ahead before two points in as many minutes from Lismire cut thedeficit to the minimum. In the 19th minute Brian Sigerson played a ballback to Trevor Costigan who split the posts from 40 metres to increaseBallinacurra's lead. A minute later a storming run down the left hand sidefrom the pacy Scott Richards resulted in another point. A fine score fromdistance from Tommy O'Leary put four between the sides before anotherScott Richards point, this time from the right hand side put The Villagefurther ahead. Lismire got the final score of the half to leave Ballinacurraahead by 1-6 to 0-5 points at the break. The second half was only a minute old when a Scott Richards free hadBallinacurra five points ahead. A good move down the left hand sideinvolving Brian Sigerson and Ger Healy, who eventually fed KillianHarty to fire over a fine point. Lismire closed the gap to four points withtwo frees in the 4th and 6th minutes. Tommy O'Leary scored his secondpoint of the game in the 9th minute before another point from ScottRichards from the left hand side a minute later put The Village six ahead.Scott Richards pointed a free in the 14th minute and three minutes laterthe ever reliant Brian Sigerson fired over one of his own. A Lismire pointin the 20th minute cut the lead to seven points. However Ballinacurraresponded in style with a Scott Richards free and a Brian Sigerson effortfrom 45 metres out to put them nine points ahead after twenty three min-utes. A mini revival by Lismire yielded a goal and two points in threeminutes to cut the deficit to four points and leave them a fighting chancewith four minutes remaining. A monstrous point from half way from ScottRichards eased Ballinacurra's worries before Tommy O'Leary capped offa fine display with the final point of the game to leave Ballinacurra aheadby 1-16 to 1-10 at the final whistle.A fine team display from Ballinacurra has them in fine fettle for theupcoming County Final against a strong Kilmichael side. By John WalsheAlthough it's still a month away from next weekend, preparations are wellunderway for the annual Aghada Autumn Show which takes place in thelocal hall and grounds on Saturday and Sunday, September 10th and 11th.Show Chairman, Tom Morrissey, is hoping for good weather and a bigturnout and he paid a special tribute to the hardworking committee whohave been meeting on a regular basis for the past few months. "Over theyears we have been blessed with very dedicated and proactive committeesand I would like to thank them and all who helped in any way to make theshow a success," he said.

"Weather permitting, there will be many outdoor activities such as a dogshow, sports for all along with various novelty stalls and various chil-drens' games, along with a music recital while we are having a cup of tea.Last year, we were blessed with beautiful weather and this added greatlyto the success of the show," added Tom.The enjoyment of the people of the community was evident last year inthe large number of guests who came to partake in the fun, entertainmentand the delicious refreshments on offer on the day. The large number ofcompetition entries and exhibits indicated just how valued the AutumnShow is to the local pre-schools, schools, businesses and the wider popu-lation, all of whom contributed with stands, exhibitions, demonstrationsand information points. "The aim of the show is to celebrate the talents and creativity of the com-munity," stated Tom Morrissey. "It is important to know that the exhibitsare judged by quality and standard - not against other exhibits. To see allmembers so well represented in a measure of an inclusive and progressivecommunity."Proceeds from previous shows have enabled the Community Council tofunction without having to resort to collecting from the community, withone exception being the playgrounds. Some of the examples includeinsurance for activities around the parish; auditing of accounts and secre-tarial costs; the annual senior citizens party; cleaning and maintainingcemeteries and recording information on headstones; along with presen-tations to people who have served the community in the parish. There hasalso been a website setup which can be accessed at www.aghada.info"Theshow committee express sincere gratitude for the continued use of theCommunity Centre, Scoil Isogain and the playground and the church car

park, all of which makes the show possible," said Tom. "Thanks also goto our generous sponsors, discerning judges, diligent stewards and every-one whose hard work and dedication created such a fine and enjoyableshow. "So the message is, come along and join the visitors, holidaymak-ers, neighbours and friends for all the fun of the fair on the secondSaturday and Sunday of September."

All Roads Lead To Cloyne This Wednesday; Cloyne is the place to be this evening August 10th, as the second runningof the 5K Race takes place with an 8pm start. The damp weather and rap-idly darkening skies failed to sap the wonderful atmosphere that was cre-ated at last year’s inaugural fixture. This time the hope is that the skieswill be bright blue as the expected large entry takes to the road.Five of our club members have been actively involved in organising therace and thus we urge all our members to support their colleagues in arace which is organised in aid of the Cloyne Community Association.Margaret Twohig, Ann Marie Perry, Breda Cahill, Lisa O’Lomasney andMary Keane will no doubt have a special Cloyne welcome for us all towhat promises to be a great sporting occasion in a village famed far andwide for it’s sporting heritage.Registration is at the National School, where entries will be taken from6pm. All enquiries/offers of help and assistance should bedirected to 087-2094493Compliments To Carrigtwohill; A word also to our local Carrigtwohill contingent who did a wonderfuljob in organising the Carrigtwohill 5K recently. The event ran to perfec-tion and obviously is now installed as a central part of the summer run-ning diary. Well done folks! Ballycotton Series; Summer is definitely passing at pace, when we are already reflecting onthe Churchtown South ‘5’. Another huge entry took part in this year’srace which was blessed with perfect running conditions. Our Mdielton AC contingent was again out in force, with 68 club mem-bers crossing the line. Again just like the two previous legs of this fan-tastic series, we had several head line makers in all parts of the field. There were those who continue to set the standard towards the top of thefield, those who regularly scoop their category prizes and those whorecord the very notable feat of improving their time on previous races andeven set personal best times in the process.A quick random selection firstly brings into focus Kevin Smith with ablistering sub 29 minute run, Darragh Canavan with another groundbreaking sub 30 run and surely another pb, Adam Duchnicz with a 30:33finish and Tom Cody with a seasonal best category winning 31:19. Breda Cahill continued her wonderful season and had a double reason tocelebrate. In clocking another personal best of 33:45, Breda also toppedthe honours list in the Over 40’s. Anna Dorris was also on the podium inthe same category, whilst Sally Drennan and Mary O’Keeffe finished sec-ond and third respectively in the Over 45’s. Our ladies team also finishedthird overall.Good performances were also recorded by amongst others Ann Geary,Karol Watson, Mark Walsh, Niall O’Neill, Kevin O’Reilly, MichaelKenneally, Ned Ramsell, Frances Maunsell, Barry Ahern, MargaretJones, Nicola McPherson, Moira Morrisson, Noreen Emerson, MaryKeane, Margaret Sinclair, Nora Savage, Suzanne Sloane, CatrionaCanavan, Sinead Buckley and Claire O’Leary. More information on the race series is available by logging on towww.ballycotton running.com.Kinsale 5 Miler; Twenty four hours after the Churchtown South Race a more modest entryof just over 170 took the road in Kinsale over what is regarded as a fair-ly lively 5 mile trip. Headline maker here was John O’Connell who fin-ished a splendid 16th overall, dipping under the magic 30 minute markthe first time. John has been in tremendous form this season and is alsomaking a huge impression on the triathlon scene where he competes on aweekly basis. Well done John!Tom Cody needed no time to recover from the exertions of Churchtown, landing another category prize after an eye catching 30:46. Also in cele-bratory mood was Denis Kelleher who was on the honours list in the Over45’s after one of his best runs of the year. Well done also to John Careywho recorded one of his fastest times of his career in breaking the 35minute barrier. Good performances were also enjoyed by Vincent

O’Neill, Danny McCarthy, Margaret Twohig and Marion Cotter.Novartis 5K; Now to Ringaskiddy where the popular Novartis 5K kick started a run ofthree races in three days. Here the usual big entry took on the testing 5Kroute famous for it’s climb near the end. A big Midleton contingent, mens’ captain Edmond O’Sullivan ensured morale was high and prepara-tion was right as his Midleton UDC squad travelled together to the venue. The pre race tactics definitely paid off with the team scooping two teamprizes. Kathleen O’Connell, Neilus Aherne and Tom Cody were amongst ourrunners in top form and were all rewarded with individual categoryprizes.Shanagarry 5K; Shanagarry welcomed it’s usual sizeable Midleton AC gathering for the25th running of the festival 5K on Thursday evening. John Kearney’slong standing course record of 15 minutes flat remains in tact on a nightwhen 100 participants marked on all time high for the event. A total of44 runners from our club participated.David Murphy from the juvenile wing emphasized his huge potential byfinishing 3rd in 17:26, a remarkable display on his first race after a breakfrom action. Regular speed merchants Marc Dalton (6th) and DarraghCanavan (10th) again impressed whilst Sinead Kevany’s arrival at theclub has seen her make an instant impression winning the ladies race18;45. Category winner Tom Cody is surely on the brink of applying for plan-ning permission to extend his trophy cabinet after topping the Over 55’swhilst junior athlete Michael Furlong, Mark Walsh, Vincent O’Neill,Barry Aherne, John Carey, Simon Thompson, Paul Kierans, DonieO’Connell, Alan Kelleher and Trish Macropoulos were amongst our crewto record very positive performances.Other Races; Elsewhere there was plenty of other action to reflect on. MIDLETON ATHLETIC CLUBSenior Section – News Update

Glenbower Rovers 1-14 Cill Na Martra 0-1In a tremendous U21 B County Football final, played in Pairc UiRinn on last Friday night, Glenbower Rovers just held out toclaim victory from a gallant Cill Na Marta side that would haveprobably deserved a draw given their tremendous comeback inthe closing stages. With ten minutes remaining Glenbower led by 1-14 to 0-10 and looked tobe on course for a comfortable victory, but the Muskerry champions nevergave up and inspired by the tremendous finishing of Kevin Hoare theyedged closer and closer. Indeed were it not for a last gasp tackle, from cor-ner back Michael Fitzgerald, who got a touch to dispossess ShaneO'Duinin, as he was about to pull the trigger, with his side trailing by twopoints, Glenbower might well have lost this one. That saving tackle leftCill Na Martra still needing a goal to win and while they managed to closethe gap to a point, the equaliser just would not come.Glenbower were perhaps a shade fortunate that Cill Na Martra subPadraig O'Goilli committed an off the ball foul that was spotted by refer-ee Derek Carroll, as Cill Na Martra looked set to land an equaliser withDonal O'Conaill closing in on goal. Carroll awarded a free out whichGlenbower made the most of to take the ball to the far end leaving Cill NaMartra still trailing by a point as the game went into injury time. It wasno more than Glenbower deserved and when Brian Collins broke up thefinal attack, victory was secured on a night when both sides played them-selves to a standstill in a really fine game of football..The sides were level four times in the first twelve minutes as SeanachainO'Loinnsigh, Cathal O'Riordan, Christopher Lynch and Kevin Hoarelanded points from Cill Na Martra while Brian Collins, Sean Long,Seamus Harnedy and Kevin Lane landed points for Glenbower, who thenwent two points in front as Collins, (who might have had a goal) and SeanLong put Glenbower Rovers two points in front at the end of a terrificopening quarter. Ian Cahill and Seamus Harnedy were getting on top atmidfield for Glenbower, but it took a fine save from Colin McMahon topreserve the Glenbower lead. As the half progressed it became a shootoutbetween Sean Long who pointed twice for the winners and Kevin Hoarewho shot three further points before the interval. Indeed both sides mayhave found the net, but a deflected effort from Tadgh O'Connor forGlenbower came back off the underside of the crossbar, while at the otherend a poor finish by Peadar O'Muimhneachain saw Colin McMahon savewith Glenbower going into the break leading by 0-9 to 0-7 as SeamusHarnedy had the final score of the half in the 29th minute. On the resumption Sean Long, and Hoare traded points before the onlygoal of the game arrived, and what a crucial score it proved to be. DavidCahill powered through the Cill Na Martra defence before shooting lowinto the corner of the net, and with Kevin Lane adding a point, Glenbowerhad opened up a six point gap as they led by 1-11 to 0-8 after 35 minutes.Cill Na Matra were not finished yet and with Shane O'Duinin, FinbarrHealy and Donal O'Conaill coming forward at every opportunity, theMuskerry champions forced Glenbower into conceding free's. KevinHoare was in immaculate form as he pointed from all angles and distancesto keep Cill Na Martra in the hunt at the end of the third quarter. With Ian Cahill, an improving Alan Keniry, Brian Collins and SeamusHarnedy leading by example it was Glenbower that again moved into awinning position with Kevin Lane and Ian and David Cahill shootingover tremendous points to restore the six point advantage with just tenminute remaining. What a ten minutes it was, as Cill Na Martra threw caution to the windand with Kevin Hoare, (unerring all night), landed a further three pointsand Shane O'Duinin also finding the range the gap was down to twobefore Michael Fitzgerald got the all important touch to deny Cill NaMartra a goal. Had they scored then they might well have won. As it wasGlenbower had to pull out all the stops and in the finish they were morethat a little relieved to hold out as time ran out for a gallant Cill Na Martraside that were definitely unlucky not to have forced a replay. That will not bother Glenbower who were claiming their first title andkeeping the Sean Crowley cup in the division, following the inauguralsuccess of Erin's Own last year. It was a tremendous game played in a finesporting fashion and it was a pity that there had to be a loser. Such is sporthowever and to the victor go the spoils with County Board Chairman

Jerry O'Sullivan presenting the Sean Crowley cup to Glenbower Roverscaptain Seamus Harnedy, who suitably replied in his acceptance speech.Glenbower: S Long 0-5, D Cahill 1-1, K Lane 0-3, S Harnedy and BCollins 0-2 each and I Cahill 0-1.Cill Na Martra: K Hoare 0-12, S O'Duinin 0-2, C O'Riordan and SO'Loinnsigh 0-1 each.Glenbower Rovers: C McMahon, J Rohan, P O'Brien, M Fitzgerald, DColeman, B Collins, C O'Brien, I Cahill, S Harnedy, S Long, A Keniry, DCahill, T O'Connor, K Lane and D Long. By John WalsheOver twelve months ago, Midleton womanMary Cooney died in the Cork UniversityMercy Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Now, through the efforts of her husband Kevinand daughter Nicola, over €3,000 has beenraised for two Cork charities, the MercyHospital Foundation and The Friends of StPatrick's, Marymount Hospice.Mary was a well-known athlete and a regular prize-winner, having com-menced running back in the 1980s. She was a member of Midleton ACand later East Cork AC and was a familiar face at the many road races andcross-country events in the Cork and Munster area. Due to a back opera-tion, Mary had to retire from the sport in the early 1990s. Just before heroperation, along with her husband, Kevin, Mary ran the famous New YorkCity Marathon in the good time of 3:49 with Kevin recording 3:33.Unfortunately, this was the last marathon for both of them.During Mary's illness she spent time in Marymount Hospice and wascared for at home by the Marymount Homecare team. This year Kevinand his daughter Nicola decided, in Mary's memory, to do something toraise funds for both the Mercy and Marymount. They picked theEdinburgh Half-Marathon on May 22 but due to injury Nicola never ranover 10 miles prior to the race as she was forced to keep her mileage to aminimum. "With an 8am start in Edinburgh, we both were anxious butonce the gun went it was down to action," recalls Kevin. "The courseitself was fairly flat with the weather kind enough and Nicola finished upwith a time of 2:13 and I did 1:32, so it was a good day out for both of usand knowing it was to benefit the two charities, it made it all worthwhile."We would like to thank everyone for their kind help in our fundraisingeffort and for all the support given to us since Mary's death," added Kevin.Of the €3,000 raised, €1500 was presented to the Mercy HospitalFoundation and €1500 to The Friends of St Patrick's, MarymountHospice.
