Instructions:

1. Prepare and cut fabric:• Prepare fabric:

- Wash and dry recycled clothing before using.- Cut clothing apart following seams so fabric lays flat.

• Cut fabrics:- Cut one 22" x 35" rectangle for body of windsock, press

flat.Note: Piece fabric scraps to create a rectangle large enough to cut the desired size for body of windsock or use yardage fabric.

- Cut one 20" x 34½" rectangle of heavy-weight interfac-ing. Interfacing will provide stability in body section of windsock.

2. Create body:• Mark tube fabric to form body of windsock:

- Mark opening on wrong side of fabric for pop up inser-tion wire. Measure 2" up from lower edge and 1" for opening.

• Fuse interfacing to wrong side of fabric, following manu-facturer’s instructions.

• Fold fabric tube in half with wrong sides together and folded edges even. Body measures approximately 10" in height. Press fold area flat.

3. Add trim to body of windsock:• Find, prepare, and select trims to make streamers for

windsock:- Select a variety of new or recycled trims with widths

measuring approximately ½" to 1½".- Select recycled clothing turning into trim by cutting

widths measuring approximately ½" to 1". Piece fabric strips to create longer streamers.

- Cut trim strips to a length of approximately 28" to 60", depending on desired look. Our windsock’s streamers measured between 30"–60". For our project, we cut our trim at 35". So determine how long the windsock will be and cut the trim accordingly.

• Using either pins or Wonder Clips, secure trim to the lower inside folded edge of body. Place trim in a single row aligned next to each other, baste in place ½" from lower edge. Work with 4" to 5" at a time until trims are secured in place.

• Insert the pop-up refill:- Keep the pop-up refill wire taped together; it will make

it easier to work with. If it opened, tape or clamp back together.

- Position refill wire at the upper fold.- Use Jumbo Wonder Clips or basting pins to hold the

taped wire in the fold area.

Fold

• Optional: Carefully snip tape while coil is secured, or fol-low instructions to complete.

• Place the upper folded edge over lower edge covering trim ends. Topstitch around the perimeter of the body of wind-sock, ¼" from edges.

- Once unclipped or unpinned allow the coil to slip down to the streamer edge of the windsock.

- Spin wire coil until tape is located at the opening in seam. Carefully snip tape through opening, releasing the wire. Repeat for second tape section holding wire.

4. Complete windsock:• Optional: hand-stitch the insertion opening in the seam

closed.• Appliqué stars to windsock:

- Trace and cut three stars using included pattern on PDF from wool felt.

- Position stars approximately 1" apart in a centered, vertical line on the front of windsock.

- Hand-stitch or glue stars in place.

Baste in place

Refill wire placed between layers inside

upper fold

Topstitch

• Add hanger to windsock:- Cut an approximate 40"–42" length from trim or denim

strip.- Press under an approximate 1" hem at each end of trim

strip.- Position pressed ends on opposite sides of the inside of

windsock, just below the wired upper edge.- Machine or hand-stitch securely, through all layers of

windsock.Note: if machine stitching, make certain that the heavy metal coil is not going to interfere with sewing machine for stitching.

- Stitch a box with an X or a series of zigzag stitches.
