1. The Clotilda and Africatown 9:00am-12:00pm, Room 140/41 Whitley Hall Learn the story of the Alabama-based ship The Clotilda and the geo-graphic and cultural origins of the 110 West African captives from Benin and Nigeria who founded Africatown after they were forcibly brought to Mobile in 1860, long after the importation of slaves into America was outlawed.

2. Writing for Young People I: Irene Latham and Charles Waters – 10:00-11:00am, Room 318 Whitley Hall The co-authors of Can I Touch Your Hair? (2018) celebrate how poems can foster dialogue between young people, healing the inevitable “mistakes” we make when learning about people unlike ourselves and, by extension, what makes us each unique.

3. Writing for Young People II: Bethany Hegedus – 11:00am-12:00pm, Room 318 Whitley Hall The author of Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird (2018) explores how children’s literature teach young people about important historical fig-ures

4. Alabama Story with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival – 1:30-4:30pm, Gold Room (2nd Floor) Drawing from history, the-ater, and communication studies, this workshop ex-plores how the play Ala-bama Story advances liter-acy and equality.

5. Young Adult Writing I: Randi Pink – 1:30-2:30 pm 318 Whitley Hall A no-holds-barred conversa-tion with novelist Randi Pink on why YA fiction should confront social issues. 6. Young Adult Writing II: S. F. Henson—2:30-3:30 pm 318 Whitley Hall Award-winning novelist S. F. Henson explores how char-acters can outgrow prejudice to become better people.
