If you're still looking for

that one person who can

change your life, take a

look in the mirror.

On Saturday 19 January,

the new grade 8s em-

barked on an ―Amazing

Race‖ adventure through

Summerstrand. Sixteen

teams endured such activities as digging old nuts

and screws from drums of old engine oil, being

washed off in the car wash at Total Summer-

strand, burying themselves in sand, to fun activi-

ties at the Boardwalk. One of the activities was a

challenge to see who could eat a plate of curry

the fastest - however, the curry was too mild for

their taste buds! Once back at school, each team

had to nominate its most valuable team member,

and these learners were rewarded with a flip in a

helicopter, a highlight for sure. In the afternoon,

the peer counsellors met with their classes, after

which the grade 8s undertook more activities in

their class groups. The day provided a wonderful

opportunity for the grade 8s to meet new friends

and to bond with fellow classmates. For many,

I’m sure, this will remain a highlight of the grade

8 year.

Maths

Olympiad Entries for participation in the

Maths Olympiad must be completed by Friday, 1

February. Learners must please contact Miss

Norden regarding entries at R20 per learner.

We ask all parents to load the new version of the D6

Communicator. The school has decided to commu-

nicate with parents by using only the following three

communication technologies: SMS, D6Communica-

tor and email. This enables Pearson to save on

paper and ink and also provide instant communica-

tion of important information to parents and learners.

In order for us to make these technologies as effi-

cient as possible, it is vital that Pearson is informed

of any changes in email addresses and cell-phone

numbers. This can be done by emailing the school

at [email protected] or the Head of

the IT Department (Mr James) at

[email protected]

With the increased use of smart phones, it has come

to our attention that more parents and learners are

making use of the D6 Communicator Mobile site:

http://mobi.d6communicator.com/ With D6Com you

are able to read the latest News, glance at the Cal-

endar and read up on important Resources. NEWS

= latest news on a daily / weekly basis CALENDAR =

Application for

Special Needs:

Any parents of children with special needs such

as extra time for writing exams, concessions in

terms of immigrant status, etc., must please com-

plete an application form which may be collected

from Ms Smith. All forms need to be returned by

Thursday, 7 February 2013.

Procedure for changing

subjects in Grades 10 &

11: [Extract from a Provincial Assessment Instruc-

tion.]

The National Department of Education has

formulated the procedure to be followed for

the change of subjects relating to the National

Senior Certificate in Grades 10—11.

- A learner may change one or more subjects in

his or her Grade 10 year.

- Learners may change a subject in Grade 10 &

11 if the school deems it to be in the best interest

of the learner to change a subject. The school

may take such a decision only after consultation

with the Head of Department or his/her delegate.

- The approval for a subject change must be ob-

tained from the Director: Assessment and Exami-

nations, provided the following is furnished:

* a letter from the principal either supporting or

providing reasons for not supporting the change;

* a letter from the subject teacher outlining the

programme to be followed to assist the learner to

cover the aspects of the curriculum statement for

the previous grades that were missed. The clos-

ing date for the change of subjects in Grades

10 and 11 will be no later than 30 June, in the

year in which the examination will be written.

concentrate more on the honing of skills than

on fitness exercises on hot/humid days.

Pearson started its 2013 annual cricket fixtures on a high note with all teams recording victories against Nico Malan. The 1st team won the toss and elected to bat first. The Nico Malan bowlers made use of the favourable early morning bowling conditions and had Pearson under pressure with Pearson struggling on 45/4. Our open-ing batsman, Brydon Carse batted superbly and together with the Pearson lower order, got our team to 180/10 in the 50-over match. Carse was eventually bowled for 79, in his effort to increase the run rate towards the end of the innings. Our bowlers bowled well and picked up wickets regularly. Carse (2/15 in 10) also contributed with the ball and together with Pearson captain, Jacques Budricks (4/19 in 8), saw Pearson home. Nico Malan managed to make only 123/10, giving us a well-earned 57-run victory.

Tuck Shop The new academic year is already

well on its way and we should like to take this

opportunity to introduce the Pearson Tuckshop,

the Rendezvous, to all our new parents. We have

improved on our menu in order to offer a range of

healthy and affordable food options to all our learn-

ers. We depend on your valuable support and

invite you to visit us during the week or

on sports days.

We have a system for when learners have to

be collected early for Doctors’ Appointments

etc. Parents must inform the school of the

date and time that any learner needs to be

collected early. The learner must complete

a BLUE FORM granting him/her permission

to leave early, signed by the learner’s Grade

Head. These forms are available at the front

office. The school will then arrange for the

learner to be waiting in the foyer just before

he/she needs to be fetched. Parents must

note that they have to sign out the

learner at reception before leaving

the school premises.
