Today is the last Sunday of the Church year, the Solemnity of Christ the King. We celebrate that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Uni-verse who has overcome the power of death and will come again as our king in glory at the end of time. It means that above all else, our first and total loyalty must be to Christ and to his gospel. I recently read an article in The New York Times which was written

by William S. Brewbaker III who is an Evangelical Christian, he was writing about the current connection between the Evangelical community and politics. I found the article to be thought provoking and felt that in some parts of the article I could simply replace “Catholics” with the word “Evangelicals”.

At one point the writer says: “Evangelicals may love their country, and may believe that it has been a force for good but they cannot affirm that the Unites States…is the world’s hope…Whatever their opinion about the political issues of the day, Evangeli-cals must place their hope in Jesus, period.” I believe that these words not only apply to Evangelicals but to us Catholics. The Solemnity of Christ the King affirms that our hope is in Jesus Christ alone as the Savior of the world. The writer then adds: “But Evangelicals should proceed from a posture of humility, love of neighbor and ultimate loyalty to Christ instead of arrogantly identifying the success of a given party or politi-cal movement with the advancement of the Kingdom of God”. In such a polarized so-ciety as ours, we can fall into the tendency of being certain that we are right and others are wrong. In doing this we forget humility and the need to love and respect all people as Christ taught us. Today’s feast provides a wonderful opportunity to once again affirm that our faith and trust lie in Jesus Christ alone.

MASS INTENTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

En Español

Hoy es el último domingo del año de la Iglesia, la solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Celebramos que Jesucristo es el Señor del Uni-verso que ha vencido el poder de la muerte y que volverá como nuestro rey en gloria al final de los tiempos. Significa que, por encima de todo, nuestra primera y total lealtad debe ser hacia Cristo y hacia su evangelio. Recientemente leí un artículo en The New York Times que fue escrito por William S. Brewbaker III, que es un cristiano evangélico, que estaba escribiendo sobre la conexión actual entre la comunidad evangélica y la política. Encontré que el artículo era estimulante y sentí que en algunas partes del artículo simplemente podía reemplazar a “católicos” con la palabra “evangélicos”.

En un momento el escritor dice: “Los evangélicos pueden amar a su país, y pueden creer que ha sido una fuerza para el bien pero no pueden afirmar que Estados Unidos ... es la esperanza del mundo ... Cualquiera que sea su opinión sobre los asuntos políticos del momento, Los evangélicos deben poner su es-peranza en Jesús, y punto. “Creo que estas palabras no solo se aplican a los evangélicos, sino a nosotros, los católicos. La solemnidad de Cristo Rey afirma que nuestra esperanza está en Jesucristo solo como el Salvador del mundo. El escritor agrega: “Pero los evangélicos deben proceder desde una postura de humildad, amor al prójimo y lealtad final hacia Cristo en lugar de identificar arrogantemente el éxito de un partido o mov-imiento político dado con el avance del Reino de Dios”. En una sociedad tan polarizada como la nuestra, podemos caer en la tendencia de estar seguros de que tenemos razón y otros están equivocados. Al hacer esto, nos olvidamos de la humildad y la necesidad de amar y respetar a todas las personas como Cristo nos enseñó. La fiesta de hoy ofrece una maravillosa oportuni-dad para afirmar una vez más que nuestra fe y confianza yace solo en Jesucristo.

Vigilia por la Paz

Te invitamos a que te unas a nosotros el martes 5 de diciembre por la noche para una Vigilia de Adviento para la Paz especial de 7:00 pm a 9:00 pm. La Navidad proclama “Paz para el pueblo de Dios en la tierra”, por lo que nos reunimos para orar para que la paz de Cristo se convierta en realidad en nuestro mundo y en nuestro país. Con el peligro de una guerra nuclear con Corea del Norte, el peligro de actos aleatorios de terrorismo, el número de tiroteos masivos y el aumento de crímenes de odio, tenemos que reunirnos como cristianos y orar por la paz.

It means giving of one’s time, money, compas-sion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.

Un nuevo grupo parroquial para adultos jóvenes de 14-18 años ha comenzado a reunirse todos los sábados de 7:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m. en la Sala de Música. Pase tiempo socializando con música, comida y meditación. Amigos y familiares son bienven-idos.

Si conoce una familia de Puerto Rico o el Caribe que se mudó aquí debido a los recientes huracanes. Invítelos a inscribir a sus hijos en Mission Grammar School. Hay asistencia financiera es-pecial disponible para las familias que se mudaron aquí para escapar de la tragedia de los recientes huracanes. Vigil for PeaceWe invite you to join us on Tuesday evening, December 5th for a special Advent Vigil for Peace from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm. Christmas proclaims “Peace to God’s people on earth” and so we gather to pray that the peace of Christ will become a reality in our world and in our country. With the danger of nuclear war with North Korea, the danger of random acts of terrorism, the number of mass shoot-ings, and the rise in hate crimes, we need to gather as Christians and pray for peace.

Cristo Joven: A Group for Young AdultsA new parish group for young adults aged 14-18 has begun to meet every Sat-urday from 7:00pm-8:00pm in the Music Room. Spend time socializing with music, food, and meditation. Friends and family members are welcome.

Volunteer Opportunity: Christmas LuncheonThe Community of Sant’ Egidio will be holding a special Christmas luncheon for all those in need on Christmas Day in the Parish Center from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. We are seeking volunteers to help with set up, serving, and clean up for this event. Annual CORI FormsThe Archdiocese of Boston requires that all clergy, parish staff (full and part time), together will all volunteers (17 years of age and older) who minister to or have the potential for unmonitored access to children, youth, elderly or the disabled, undergo a CORI check. News from Mission GrammarOur Third Grade performed “You Raise Me Up” at Emmanuel College this month to celebrate Thanksgiving at their Interfaith Prayer Service.

Mission Grammar will mark the opening our Infant and Toddler Center with a Dedication on December 4th!
