Volume 31 Number 3 www.fsbgc.org Summer 2017 FSBGC College Scholarship Recipients Honored During Annual Awards Luncheon 2017-2018 Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club college scholarship recipients were honored during an annual board of directors luncheon held June 13 at the DoubleTree hotel in Fort Smith. $37,750 in support was awarded to 27 Club members, including nine incoming freshmen. FSBGC volunteer Dalton Person was guest speaker for the event. Person is a former recipient and recently graduated from Law School. Scholarship committee chair Hugh Maurras recognized donors during the luncheon. “We are proud of this outstanding group of young people” he said. “This program couldn’t exist without the generous support of our donors” he added. The scholarship program was established in 1985 by Jim & June Alexander. Since the creation of the program, 788 awards have been granted, with 324 FSBGC individual Club members receiving support. Applicants must have participated at the Club as a member or volunteer for a minimum of two years. Financial need, Club participation, and academic excellence are key ingredients that committee judges consider when making selections. The scholarship committee conducts interviews with all new applicants. The FSBGC College Scholarship program is one of the largest in the country (for Boys & Girls Clubs). Lowe’s Employees FocusOn Club Improvements

After completion of a $50,000 “Renovation Across the Nation” grant at the Stephens Boys & Girls Club, employees from Lowe’s have made plans for facility upgrades at the Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club. During the second week of August, the Lowe’s team will be donating man power and materials to enhance the inside of the Jeffrey Club. The project includes: new paint, new counter tops, new ceiling tiles, new cabinets, new base trim, new sinks and faucets, and shelving. More than a dozen Lowe’s employees volunteered at Stephens and Jeffrey during the United Way of Caring held during the Spring. CLUB MOURNS LOSSOF STACY FORSGREN

AstandingroomonlycrowdfilledthesanctuaryofChristthe King Church on May 31 to attend the funeral services of Stacy Boerner Forsgren, who passed away on May 27, 2017 at the age of 40.

Stacy fought a courageous battle against cancer. She was a graduate of Southside High and attended Arkansas State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Stacy was a realtor for Sagely & Edwards. Her true passion beyond all of her personal accomplishments was her family and friends. Stacy is survived by her

husband Dallas; children Brooklyn, Ben and Blake; parents Harold and Nancy Boerner; brother Craig and wife Courtney; brother-in-law Steve Forsgren and wife Gala and brother-in-law Justin Forsgren and wife Lori, as well as a large loving extended family.

COX COMMUNITY CONCERT SET FOR

SEPTEMBER 15 For the fourth consecutive year, concession income from theCoxCommunityconcertwillbenefittheFortSmithBoys& Girls Club. The free event is scheduled for September 15 at Harry E. Kelly Park in downtown Fort Smith. A media announcement will be made in August regarding the guest artist and warm-up act. Previous acts have included Joe Nichols, Rodney Atkins and Chris Young. More than 40 FSBGC volunteers help man the concessions for the concert. Proceeds are split between the FSBGC and the Mercy Foundation.

248 Elementary StudentsCompete in Chess Tourney

at the Boys & Girls Club A record number of students participated in the 6th annual Elementary Chess tournament held at the Boys & Girls Club on May 17. “We had an amazing turnout for this year’s event” said Tim Higgins, Evans Boys & Girls Club unit director and host for the tourney. “Our chess tournament continues to grow each year” he added. Tim Higgins, Ernest Cialone and David Israel established thecity-wideChesstournamentin2011.Duringthefirstyear,there were only 40 students competing. By 2013 the tourney reached more than 100 students and in 2015 the tourney topped the 200 mark. With two gymnasiums, the Evans Boys & Girls Club location works well for the tournament. One gym is used for the contest while the other gym is used as a play area for participantswhofinishtheirmatchesquickly.Severalteachersand volunteers helped provide snacks and lunch for the chess students. Many of the schools provided team t-shirts. Scientificstudiesprovethatyoungpeopleplayingchessona regular basis improve learning, thinking, analytical power and decision-making. Chess helps participants learn the importance of discipline, focus, foresight and planning. At the annual Boys & Girls Club tournament, the game helps participants gain self-confidenceandgivesthemtheopportunitytomeetnewfriendswhile representing their school. Each of the participants competed in four matches. After scores were totaled, Woods elementary school took the overall team title. Euper Lane was second. Other schools competing included: St. Boniface, Howard, Cook, Cavanaugh, Trusty, Howard, Orr, Bonneville, Morrison, Mansfield, Barling,Carnall, Beard and Sutton. Bus transportation was provided by the Fort Smith public schools and tables/chairs were furnished by Dr. Darren McKinney.

Two FSBGC Members Win 2017 Southwest Regional

Photography Contest Lianna Grimes (Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club) and Luke Higgins (EvansBoys&GirlsClub)wonfirstplace in the2017 Boys & Girls Clubs of America Southwest Regional Image-makers contest. Their photographs were selected from hundreds of entries in the eight-state region. The winning photos were forwarded to the BGCA nationalImage-makerscontestandexhibit.Grimeswasfirstin the 10-12 year old age group and Higgins won the 6-9 year old age group.

River Valley Corporate Games Benefit FSBGC For the third year in a row, the River Valley Corporate Games benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs. The event was held at various locations from April through June. Competition consisted of company based teams participating in a variety of athletic contests. Noel Sanger of United Federal Credit Union established the fundraiser with the help of Ty Matlock and Jason Morland. Teams competed in basketball, bowling, dodgeball volleyball, wiffleball, indoor soccer, kickball, flag football, wally-ball and billiards. The Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, Children’s Emergency Shelter and the FSBGC all received income. UFCU captured the team championship.

After-School Transportation Set to Begin on August 14

FSBGC members needing transportation from area elementary schools will have the opportunity to participate in the Fall FSBGC Shuttle service. The program includes pick-up service at 15 local elementary school sites. Last year, more than 275 FSBGC members participated. Beginning August 14, the program will shuttle registered members from their school and transport them to the Club. Participants must be currently registered for the program. Parents are responsible for picking up their child. The cost for the shuttle program is only $25 per semester. Participants must have a current FSBGC membership card ($10 per year).

FUNDS FOR FSBGC Rain couldn’t dampen the charitable spirit of 144 golfers who participated in the 21st annual FSBGC Alumni & Friends golf tournament at Fianna Hills Country Club on June 5. The event netted over $20,000 for the Boys & Girls Club. Proceeds will help benefitAlumni sponsoredprograms at the Boys & Girls Club. Weather conditions for the morning round were ideal, buttheafternoonflightenduredaonehourdelaybecauseofrain. 16 teams competed in the morning and 20 teams were in the afternoonflight.The top three teams in eachflightreceived gift cards from Academy Sports. First National Bank and Orr Chevrolet served as corporate gold sponsors. Coca-cola and Burford Distributing provided beverages and lunch was served by Hooters. Hole-in-One prizes were sponsored by Orr Chevrolet.

SPORTSAthletes in the NewsTevin Brewer – was named MVP of the Arkansas High School All-star basketball game. The former Stephens Boys & Girls Club basketball star led the Northside High Grizzly basketball team to a state title. Brewer plans to attend Eastern State (OK) College this fall. Tevin’s father Virl Brewer, and high school coach Eric Burnett both grew up playing basketball at the Stephens unit.

Craig Gentry – is playing outfield thissummer for the Baltimore Orioles. Gentry has played on three other MLB Teams during his career, including the Texas Rangers, Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels. He is a former member of the Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club.

Koda Glover – a pitcher for the MLB Washington Nationals, has been on the injured reserved list during the past month. When healthy, Glover is considered one of the top closers in the league. Koda and his brother Clay, played American Legion baseball in Fort Smith.

Brett Goode – who just finished playinghis 9th season in the NFL, participated in the 2017 FSBGC Alumni & Friends golf tourney. Goode has played his entire professional career with the Green Bay Packers and was aSuper Bowl champion in 2011.

Tre’ Norwood – will be playing football this fall for the Oklahoma Sooners. Norwood was a star high school athlete in basketball and football. He is a former member of the Stephens Boys & Girls Club. Norwood received the “best Athlete” award at the River Valley Best of Preps dinner.

Tanner Cross - the 2017 FSBGC Youth of the Year will play football this fall at Dartmouth. Cross is a member of the Evans Boys & GirlsClub where he has served as a Lean On Me mentor and coach.

SPORTSMAN WINS TITLE GAMEAT BARTLESVILLE

Fort Smith Sportsman won the 58th annual Glen Winget American Legion tournament in Bartlesville, Oklahoma during the July 4th weekend. Fort Smith defeated Hillcrest 4-0 in the finals. It was the third tournament championship the team has won this season, with wins at the Maurice Katzer tournament and the Border War championship in Missouri. The team has a record of 25-7 (through July 5)

Forsgren Captures Springfield Tourney With a record of 23-5, the Forsgren Junior American Legion team recently won the Price-Cutter tournament in Springfield, Missouri. “We are very pleased with this group of young men” said team manager Shea Hamilton. “Our kids competed hard and represented Fort Smith very well” he added. The newly formed team consists of mainly 16 year-olds. Forsgren will compete in a zone tournament for a chance to qualify for state later in the summer.
