UNITED WAY AGENCIESFACE BUDGET HURDLES

With the recent national and local economic slump, non-profit organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club, will be struggling to maintain services while facing down-sized budgets. “The upcoming year will be very challenging,” said Tom Minton, president of the United Way of Fort Smith Area.

Since 1928, the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club has been a United Way agency partner. The Club receives around 25% of it’s income from the annual United Way campaign.

Between the stock market plunge and the increase in local unemployment, campaign contributions are nearly 30% less than last year’s campaign. The United Way of Fort Smith Area serves 33 non-profit agencies which include Boys & Girls Clubs in Fort Smith, Van Buren, Alma, Booneville, Sallisaw, Greenwood and Paris.

More than 250 guests helped celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of Hall of Fame inductees Billy Higgins, Robert A. Young III, Jim King and Johnny Smith Sr. The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame banquet was held November 10, 2008 at the Holiday Inn Civic Center.

Boys & Girls Club board president Dr. Cole Goodman served as master of ceremonies. Special entertainment was provided by a singing group from Stephens Boys & Girls Club, along with staff member Darneisha Adams. Alumni & Friends Association president Lyn Caselman helped recognize all previous Hall of Fame inductees. A video presentation highlighted the careers of those being honored.

Jim King was introduced by his brother Wayne King. Jim is a former NBA All-Star basketball player who grew up playing sports at the Club. He led Northside High to two state championships, and played college basketball at Tulsa. King played 10 years in the NBA, including stints with the LA Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Cincinnati Royals and San Francisco Warriors.

John M. Smith Sr. was honored, posthumously, by long-time friend and local attorney Doug Smith. An emotional and touching acceptance speech was given by his son, John M. Smith Jr. The Smith family has supported Boys & Girls Club activities for more than 25 years. John Smith Sr. is a former FSBGC board president.

Robert A. Young III was presented his Hall of Fame award by Boys & Girls Club board member Walton Maurras. Young has served on the Boys & Girls Club board of directors for 19 years, and was co-chair of the $ 2.7 million Evans capital campaign. Young has been involved in a variety of civic projects. He is chairman of the board of Arkansas Best Corporation.

Billy Higgins was presented his award by Jim Wyatt. Higgins is an Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. He has been involved with the Boys & Girls Club for the past 6 decades. The noted author and historian is past president of the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association, and a long-time Club volunteer.

Lean on Me Mentoring participants enjoy a Christmas Party held at the Evans Boys & Girls Club in December. Gifts were made possible by Santa Claus and Friends.

UA Fort Smith StUdentSServing AS ClUb mentorSFort Smith Boys & Girls Club members participating in the

Lean On Me mentoring program have enjoyed being matched with several students from the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. “We have more college students mentoring at the Club than ever before” said mentoring coordinator, Kari Fenby.

Established in 1997, the “Lean On Me” mentoring program has provided FSBGC members with the opportunity to receive one-on-one guidance through mentoring sessions held at the Club.

Volunteer mentors serve as positive role models and help enhance the child’s (mentee’s) self-esteem and confidence level. Meetings are held once a week at the Club. The goal for the volunteer mentor is to build character and increase potential in the mentee. Whether it’s playing a computer game, shooting basketball, playing ping-pong or tackling a homework assignment, the mentor provides positive reinforcement and friendship.

Once a month a group activity is conducted. During these monthly activities, participants are involved in various fun events including: bowling, skating, area sporting events, movies, etc. Special parties are held in December and May. The program is sponsored by the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association and the Downtown Optimist Club.

Former Lean On Me mentee Jacob Kirksey, a three year participant, was a recipient of a FSBGC College Scholarship for the 2007-2008 school year. Special event projects for February and March include bowling and skating. For more information about mentoring, visit www.fsbgc, or call the FSBGC administration office.

Fort Smith Hall of Fame member Billy Higgins has recently written a new book called The Barling Darling: Hal Smith in American Baseball. The book is published by the Butler Center. Hal Smith is a former major league all-star and was inducted into the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame in 2000.

The St. Louis Cardinals were contenders in 1957 and ’59, two of Hal Smith’s best years as a Major League player. Smith, who grew up in Barling, had risen in the Minor Leagues, and even played in Mexico, Cuba, and the Asian circuit. Readers will be intrigued to learn key roles Smith played as baseball went through profound changes in the late 1950s. At the time, Smith was helping Bob Gibson grow into an All Star pitcher and Tim McCarver to become one of the great catchers. Smith, himself, played in the 1959 All Star Game—one of only two Cardinals to do so that year.

Billy D. Higgins is professor of history at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and a member of the Society of American Baseball Researchers. His previous book, A Stranger and a Sojourner: Peter J. Caulder, Free Black Frontiersman in Antebellum Arkansas (University of Arkansas Press), won the Ragsdale Award for excellence in historical writing about Arkansas.
